二 妈祖文化的发展
从丁伯桂《庙记》所知，自元祐丙寅（1086）妈祖 民间信仰开始形成，至宣和五年（1123）“赐庙额 曰顺济”，表明官方对妈祖信仰的认可。官方的认 可，对民间信仰起了巨大的推动作用。终有宋一代， 妈祖六次被加封。 元代，江浙地区的岁粮收入占全国的三分之一，江 南大批粮食和物资都要由漕运输往北方，而漕运路 线是沿海而行，随着海运的兴起，妈祖信仰也更加 盛行。妈祖信仰随海运传至直沽，从此确立了天津 成为北方妈祖文化中心的地位，掀开妈祖文化史新 的一页。
明《正统道藏》有一篇《太上老君说天 妃救苦灵验经》。这是一篇以道教救世 论观点，通过道教始祖太上老君命天妃 降世，赐以封号，辅助帝王，传经符咒， 解救于民，从而再塑妈祖形象的经文。 道教是多神教，往往通过造神运动，把 民间信仰之神纳入其神仙谱系。该经是 妈祖信仰日趋兴盛的表现，为明清天妃 宫基本理清了道教宫观的管理体制，并 为宫观及民间花会、艺术创作的妈祖形 象提供了依据。
明代进入永乐、宣德年间，妈祖信仰已趋高潮。永 乐七年朱棣对妈祖的褒封以及其后不久《太上老君 说天妃救苦灵验经》的出现，都表示了明代妈祖信 仰高潮的到来。但是推动这一高潮的到来，还是与 郑和七下西洋的壮举密不可分。郑和首次下西洋， 奏请建立南京龙江天妃宫，回航后，向明成祖奏报： “永乐三年，统领舟师，至古里等国，是海寇陈祖 义，聚众三佛齐国劫掠番商，亦来犯我舟师，即有 神兵阴助，一鼓而殄灭之，至五年回。”明成祖听 郑和在海上多次遇险，屡求天妃救助，化险为夷的 奏报后，立即遣使前往龙江天妃宫祭祀妈祖。
香港位临南海，又属于深水港和和优良港湾，不 但福建渔民多来此捕捞和定居，东南沿海地区的 大批商船也经此停泊和贸易，从而带来了妈祖信 仰。明郑和下西洋时，在新安县南山赤湾，开始 立庙，史载“永乐八年钦差中贵张源使暹罗，始 立庙。”这便是赤湾天妃庙。赤湾天后宫从明永 乐八年至清嘉庆二十二年四百余年，历经大的修 葺就有七次之多，殿宇规模之大，地位之重要， 为新安县之最，也是明清时期香港地区的妈祖信 仰中心。一直到1949年前，每年都有大批香港信 众到赤湾天后宫朝拜。其余还有佛堂门天后庙， 铜锣湾天后庙，荃湾天后宫，大树下天后庙，林 村天后庙，总之，明清以来香港的妈祖信仰长久 不衰。

• Starting in the Song Dynasty, it was a local belief in Putian area. Locals worshipped her as a goddess. • The belief of Matsu spread quickly in the Yuan Dynasty .The Yuan Dynasty made Dadu (Beijing today) as its capital, leaving a large quantity of food must be transported to Dadu from Jiangnan by sea. The role of Matsu became increasing important owned to the risk of sea freight.

• In the Ming Dynasty, the Matsu belief reached its peak as a global belief, spread by Zheng He , immigrants and merchants from China. • The belief of Matsu was a common folk religion in Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty as people living in the coastal area in southern Fujian often crossed the Taiwan Strait to make a living. Most voyagers prayed to Matsu for a safe voyage.

Matsu was born on the Meizhou Island in Fujian province. Her middle-aged parents, the Lins, already had six girl. Her mother prayed to the goddess Guan Yin for another daughter. Hearing her fervent prayers, Guan Yin came to her in a dream, giving her a flower blossom to eat that caused her to conceive the next day.
