“Healing Hands, Loving Spirit”Project ProposalHong Kong Model United Nations ClubForewordAs a noble group of elites, medical professions make changes to people’ lives. Quite a number of them care about current affaires, passionate towards what they can do besides their routine medical service, some may already made tremendous impacts; however due to limitation on time and professional requirement, most of them pay less attention on what’s happening beyond medical field, rarely speak out and even bearing subjective mindsets. It is necessary to bring out rooms and opportunities for discussion and understanding for a healthy development of the medical health care profession and even the whole society!To know about the world, contribute your part in the society by only sticking on books would be far from enough, we need to step out and touch the real world. In order to show real faces of the medical issues and policies around the world to our future health care professions, China is our start.With increasing exchanges on medical issues and information between Hong Kong and mainland China, issues like medical system, education and management are also highlighted. The only way to broaden their horizon on these local issues is to let them be there and see for themselves. However among the numbers of exchange activities on medical field, few are available for young medicine and nursing students.We, HKMUNC therefore push the project “Healing Hands, Loving Spirit”, hoping to broaden the international horizon of our future medical elites from medicine, Hong Kong to mainland China and, the world; at the same time, their loving spirits and healing hands can reach different parts of the world where poverty and illnesses still raged, they can still yet play their roles and serve Hong Kong in their best way.Hong Kong Model United Nations Club (HKMUNC)Hong Kong Model United Nations Club (HKMUNC) is a young organization. Established in 2004, HKMUNC aims at promoting MUN culture in the region, promoting world peace through understanding and cooperation between cultures and arousing youth attention on global issues. With the above objectives, HKMUNC has successfully drawn great attention in the society.Past Events of HKMUNC includes the HKMUN Conference 2008, HKGMUN Conference 2006, visits and workshops on global issues. We also emerge from overseas conferences, including Harvard National MUN, China National MUN and Beijing MUN with flying colours.With the supports from our honorable advisors, the MUN Conference 2009 has increased its scale from 200 delegates to 400 delegates, with 4 committees in total.Our Aims are to:·Enhance students' organization, communication, presentation and negotiation skills ·Developing participants’ skills as future leaders in society·Inspire students with the experience of exchanging ideas and cultures with universities students from other countries·Making an effort in promoting world peace through understanding and cooperation between cultures·Promote Model United Nations in the regionModel UN BackgroundThe origin of Model United Nations (MUN) dates back to the 20s with the establishment of the League of Nations, followed by its transformation to United Nations in 1945.MUN conference has been a student-oriented activity which simulates the UN General Assembly. About 400 MUN conferences are held worldwide every year, in which 200,000 high school and college students have taken part in. The sizes of the conferences vary, as they can be held locally, at classrooms or internationally, at theUN Headquarter. Teams of participants will become country members of the UN. Each MUN delegate acts as the country’s ambassador to the UN, and discusses world issues like human rights, terrorism and sustainable development. Students will learn to be leaders in MUN, which has been a training ground for leaders of different fields. MUN is also a valuable occasion to meet friends all over the world.Content of the “Healing Hands, Loving Spirit” ProjectThe Hong Kong Model United Nations Club is founded in 2005 with the mission to arouse youth’s awareness on global issues in the hope of building a better world. The Project is one of the specialized projects initiated and organized by the Club to achieve this mission. Through the Project Hong Kong’s younger generation serving in the medical and health care services constituencies can have a better understanding of the mainland’s medical system. Through exchanges of ideas and experiences, it is believed that more and more voluntary projects can be initiated and promulgated. The ultimate aim of the Project is to gather, select and nurture the elites in the medical and health care services constituencies who can contribute to the society at large.3 Learning DomainsThe Project contains a series of activities which aim to geminate participants’ knowledge and abilities in the following 3 learning domains:1. Knowledge AcquaintanceIt is hoped that through the series of activities the participants can have a greater understanding in the mainland’s medical and health care system and the world’s health services policies.2. Social ServicesThrough voluntary services, donation and promotion, the Project allows participants to contribute themselves to the mainland’s health and medical systems.3. Leadership SkillsParticipants are given opportunities to demonstrate and train their leadership skills.3 Developmental Stages1. Stage 1: ChinaAfter the handover, China and HK are getting interconnected in many aspects, especially the medical and health care services. As there are great cultural differences between HK and China, it is necessary for people to visit China to have a deeper understanding on the Chinese system.However, even there are great demand and necessity to more exchange opportunities,there are few chances open to medical and nursing students. Hence, the Project is initiated with the hope of creating more opportunities for medical students.2. Stage 2: The WorldThe Project not only gives a chance for participants to learn the Chinese system but also the world system. This will without doubt widen the horizon of the participants whose experiences can help to improve HK and mainland’s medical and health care system. Besides, the Project also organizes service trips to poorer countries around the world.3. Stage 3: HKThe final stage is HK. We hope that the Project can gather and nurture a group of future leaders in the medical and health care constituencies, who have the abilities and commitment to contribute to HK, China and the World.2 Directions1. Years 1-3:Establishingbrand namein HKYears 5-7:FindingworldpartnersAims of the Project-To deepen the understanding of Hong Kong participants on the mainland medical and health systems and to foster exchanges of ideas and experiences between the Hong Kong participants and mainland counterparts;-To provide different channels for Hong Kong counterparts to contribute to the development of mainland medical and health systems;-To act as a stepping stone for future worldwide medical and health services; and-To gather and nurture a group of future leaders in medical and health services constituencies.Promulgation of the First ProjectSichuan Relief WorkOn the afternoon of May 12, 2008, an earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Richter scale hit Wenchuan, Sichuan Province; 69,188 were reported dead as of 29 June 2008, which is the most severe and deadliest earthquake s ince the Tangshan earthquake in 1976.Photos remarks – “Heartbreaking scene in Dujiangyan, Sichuan after the earthquake”“Rescue teams from different regions who work without days & nights”Donations flooded in from around the nation and overseas; volunteers and humane rescue teams from different provinces and around the world gave their best efforts & fastest response to help the affected inhabitants.More than six months passed, others may have buried the tragedy in memories; for people who live there who lost homes and families during the quake however, it will be pain and sadness that never fades out; and yet, reconstructions are still under process, which is also arduous and long-lasting.It will take time, money and also attention of people from different professions to help on the reconstruction; nevertheless, we should also give our best supports to those who become orphans because of the disaster; to help them, future of the nation to regain their smile and grow up healthily and happily.Photo remarks -- “Children from Sichuan should still have smiles wear on their faces, shouldn’t they?”The basic re-construction takes a minimum of 5 – 10 years as per expert’ advice and people from the medical fields are one of the crucial parts in this rebuilding team. In May 2009, one year after this century disaster and many areas are still under reconstruction. People’s livelihood, without a question, becomes more convenient. However, there is darkness whenever there is brightness. It is witness in the past few decades that urban diseases are emerging shockingly while the cost-benefit conception overshadows other important ethical values. An invisible wall is built as a result of intense pressure in modern world.In face of the chronic situation of modern world, all people are presumed to take an active role to change the problematic phenomena. Experts in the medical and health care services constituencies are always labelled as indifferent to social affairs either because they are preoccupied with their over-burdened work or they cannot find a channel to participate. Healing Hands, Loving Spirit Project is thus established by the Hong Kong Model United Nations Club to adjust this disappointing state. Participants are not only given a chance to contribute themselves to the society but also build up their leadership through their involvement in different projects.Healing Hands, Loving Spirit Project hopes that brightness will outshine the darkness by gathering a group of committed and talented future leaders in medical and health services constituencies.
