achievement is the result of gruelling hard work and intense ually athletes say how hard it is to win the big games. At the opposite end of the spectrum, however,is the fact that losing the big game,or,in my case, all the games, can be even tougher. From the spectators’point of view, last year’s basketball season for my high school team was nothing short of an embarrassment. And while 0 and 20 is certainly nothing to be proud of,that season had a bigger impact on me than any other, and probably more than any season since. As a team captain,I knew it probably wouldn’t be the easiest year, but did I ever think we would lose every game?Of course not.Since six of our top players had graduated,it was clear that we were a young team who would struggle. The struggle began earlier than expected, though,as our team’s starting center was suspended for the season, and two key members decided to quit after two weeks. At some point, quitting probably passed through every player’s mind, but,in the end,we all stuck it out, vowing to work even harder. Then there came a time when even our own coach had given up on us.Personally,I felt like it was no longer worth giving my all.I thought,if even the coach doesn’t believe in us,why should I?But just as my hope began to fade,a teammate called a meeting. He said,“Nobody thinks we’re going to win,and heck,we may not, but,as teammates and friends,we_owe_it_to_each_other_to_give_it_our_all_every_game.”Sure,it was a little cliché(陈旧的),but it was that moment that taught me how to be a leader. It hit me then that I may have been a captain, but I,like others in my position, certainly didn’t deserve the role.As a leader you can never quit on the team who looks up to you.It is one thing to be named captain and feel great and go through the motions, but it is quite another to be a real captain and make sure everyone works to their potential all the time.I am sure it is great to go through high school without losing and bringing home awards. But in all honesty,I relish the fact that my team lost every game last year.It may not help me to become a better basketball player, but it already has made me a better leader and person.46.What was the biggest problem with the author’s team last season?A.Several key members were unable to play the games.B.Their coach no longer wanted to instruct them.C.There were no actual leaders on the team.D.Most of players lost hope and wanted to quit.47.In the text, the author seems to suggest that a good leader should________.A.be confident about himselfB.make sure everyone goes all outC.work hard to win the gamesD.feel great about his team48.By saying “we owe it to each other to give it our all every game.”(Paragraph 4) the teammate means that all of them should________.A.be responsible for the lossesB.try their best on the courtC.feel thankful for what they’ve doneD.get together to win every game49.What is the main idea the author aims to express in the text?A.Success is the result of hard work.B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.C.One can learn something from the failure.D.A real leader should never give up.B(2010·合肥第四次检测) McDonnell, who has made oil drilling off Virginia’s coast, one of his administration’s top tasks, flew to Houston on Monday to advertise the benefits of offshore drilling at a national conference. He told reporters before he left that he does not want to postpone drilling but to learn from the accident off Louisiana’s coast.“What we do as Americans is that we find out what went wrong and how can we do things better,” McDonnell said.“I think that’s the spirit of American people.”President Obama announced in March that Virginia will become one of the first East Coast states to drill offshore for oil and natural panies could conduct exploratory drilling in Virginia’s waters 50 miles off the coast late next year or early in 2012.In Virginia Beach, the state’s largest city and one that relies heavily on tourism,Mayor Will Sessoms said he would be worried if the timetable was not changed.Sessoms supported drilling and helped the city pass a resolution (决议) in favor of it,in part to help the tourism industry by keeping the cost of gas down. But,he said, the Louisiana accident was a wake-up call.“It’s alarming to me,” Sessoms said.“It gives me great concern.”Obama swore Friday that no expansion of offshore oil drilling would take place until investigations into the Louisiana accident were complete.Virginia’s officials, who support drilling, said they agree that drilling should be delayed.Sen.Mark Warner said it was “appropriate”for Obama to delay offshore projects.McDonnell said he wants to see a full investigation into the Louisiana accident, but he still thinks that drilling could begin off Virginia’s coast as soon as next year or early 2012.McDonnell has also said that drilling off Virginia’s coast would create thousands of jobs,as well as lessen US dependence on foreign oil.A recent explosion and fire on an exploratory well in the Gulf (海湾) of Mexico left 11 workers missing and dead.Crude oil (原油) has been leaking into the gulf since, inching closer to the coasts of Louisiana,Alabama and Mississippi. The accident confirmed the worst fears of environmental groups and people already worried that possible spills (溢出) could harm plants, animals, and tourism.50.What was McDonnell’s opinion about drilling off Virginia’s coast?A.It should be stopped as it may cause damage to the environment.B.It should be delayed due to the gulf oil accident.C.It has a lot of benefits, and thus shouldn’t be delayed.D.It could make the US dependent on foreign oil.51.Why did Will Sessoms support drilling off Virginia’s coast?A.It could create thousands of jobs.B.It could help recover the economy.C.It met the spirit of American people.D.It partly helped the tourism industry.52.What do we know about the accident?A.The explosion in the Gulf of Mexico killed 11 workers.B.The leaked crude oil may affect the coasts of 3 states.C.The investigation into the accident has been completed.D.Officials who support drilling off Virginia’s coast are not in favor of the investigation.53.What is the main idea of the report?A.Officials reconsider support for drilling after the gulf oil accident.B.It is dangerous to drill oil off the coasts.C.People should learn from oil accidents to reduce damage to our environment.D.Investigations should be carried out immediately after oil accidents.C(2010·绵阳市第三次诊断) Everyone has good days and bad days.Sometimes, you feel as if you’re on top of the world. But occasionally you feel horrible, and you lose things and you cannot focus on your schoolwork. For more than 20 years, scientists have suggested that high self-esteem (自尊) is the key to success. Now,new research shows that focusing just on building self-esteem may not be helpful. In some cases, having high self-esteem can bring bad results if it makes you less likeable or more upset when you fail at something.“Forget about self-esteem,”says Jennifer Crocker,a psychologist (心理学家) at the University of Michigan,US,“It’s not the important thing.”Feeling goodCrocker’s advice may sound a bit strange because it is good to feel good about yourself.Studies show that people with high self-esteem are less likely to be depressed, anxious, shy,or lonely than those with low self-esteem.But,after reviewing about 18,000 studies on self-esteem,Roy Baumeister,a psychologist at Florida State University, has found that building up your self-esteem will not necessarily make you a better person. He believes that violent and wicked (邪恶的) people often have the highest self-esteem of all.He also said:“There’s no evidence that kids with high self-esteem do better in school.”ProblemsAll types of people have problems.People with high self-esteem can have big egos (自我) that can make them less likeable to their peers (同龄人),said Kathleen V ohs,a psychology professor at Columbia University.People with high self-esteem tend to think more of themselves,Vohs says.People with low self-esteem are more likely to rely on their friends when they need help. What to doResearchers say it is best to listen to and support other people.Find positive ways to contribute to society. If you fail at something try to learn from the experience.“The best therapy (药方) is to recognize your faults,” Vohs says.“It’s OK to say,I’m not so good at that, and then move on.”54.It is concluded in the research that high self-esteem________.A.is not important at allB.has taken on a different meaningC.may not be the key to successD.does not help you do better at school55.According to the research, people with high self-esteem________.A.have better relationship with people of their own ageB.are more likely to become violent and wickedC.tend to be proud and do not care much about othersD.often feel depressed and can’t focus on their work56.The advice in the last paragraph is mainly for people________.A.with high self-esteem B.with low self-esteemC.who are still at school D.who are good at everythingD(2010·江苏高考模拟三) The well-known Rushmore National Monument in the United States is built on the Rush Moore in low-and middle-income countries. However, some researchers disagree with WHO on this point. They made a study and found that the leading cause is dementia (痴呆).62.Dementia is a loss of intellectual ability that affects memorizing, learning and thinking abilites and other language skills.People with dementia may forget family members or not know what day it is.Sometimes they become angry or sad,and they can often hear voices,or see things that are actually not there.63.Renata Sousa from the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London and other researchers made a new study. The study dealt with the causes of disability among fifteen thousand people aged over sixty-five in seven countries, which include China,India,Cuba, the Dominican Republic,Venezuela,Mexico and Peru. The team found that dementia was the leading cause of disability of the elderly in areas except rural India and Venezuela.Other major causes were stroke, arthritis (关节炎),depression, visual problems and gastrointestinal (胃肠道的) problems.64.In low-and middle-income countries, heart diseases and cancer get more attention than chronic (慢性的) diseases. However, researchers say that great importance should be given to chronic diseases of the brain and mind.As the population ages, the society will have to deal with more and more cases of dementia. The study shows that the elderly is nine percent of the total population in low-and middle-income countries today. However, the number is growing quickly. It is likely to reach twenty percent of the total population by the middle of the century.65.An article published in the Lancet medical journal dealt with a special issue on disability. It was a study on disability and children in eighteen low-and middle-income countries. It indicated that in almost half of the countries, children who were breast-fed were less likely to have a disability than those who were not.The same was true of those who had a deficiency of vitamin A and those who were underweight.Children who did not take part in early learning activities or attend school were also more likely to be disabled than those who did.第三部分:写作(共三节,满分55分)第一节单词拼写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)66.He is and language problems, according to a study published on Friday. The research, believed to be the first of its kind, found that children who were not facing the person pushing them were less likely to talk, laugh and interact with their parents. The findings were based on a study of 2,722 parents and babies and an experiment where 20 babies were wheeled in buggies for a mile, facing their parents for half the journey and facing away for the other half.Parents using face-to-face buggies were twice as likely to talk to their children while the babies’heart rates fell and they were twice as likely to fall asleep,an indication that they were feeling relaxed and safe.In addition, only one baby out of the 20 studied laughed while sitting in an away-facing buggy.“Our data suggests that for many babies today, life in a buggy is emotionally impoverished and possibly stressful.Stressed babies grow into anxious adul ts,〞said Dr Suzanne Zeedyk,Developmental Psychologist at Scotland’s Dundee University who carried out the research. The study, which was published by National Literacy Trust as part of its “Talk To Your Baby〞campaign, found that 62 percent of all children observed travelled in away-facing buggies.Zeedyk said it would impact negatively on babies’ development if they spent a long time in away-facing buggies, which would undermine their ability to communicate with their parent at a time when their brain was developing rapidly.Laura Barbour of the Sutton Trust,a social mobility charity which funded the research, said buggy manufacturers should look closely at the findings.1.Using away-facing buggies may________.A.benefit both the babies and their parentsB.affect babies’ language ability permanentlyC.help babies communicate with their parentsD.have positive effect on babies’ development2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.Parents may talk twice with the babies in away-facing buggies.B.The study suggests children feel relaxed and safe in entertainment. But in this age of hightech home equipment and underused gym memberships, the simple joy of jumping rope has been forg otten.Redis covering it will give you a totalbody exercise you canfind.Although considered an excellent form of exercise, jumping rope has never gained widespread acceptance because of two fundamental reasons.First, most people recognize jumping rope as an excellent form of cardiovascular (心血管的) exercise, but they also believe that it is simply too difficult. In other words, they don’t think they’ll be able to continue jumping for the near 20 minutes that it takes to achieve a beneficial physical outcome.Second, many view it as somewhat boring and overly repetitive—not as something fun or enjoyable. As a matter of fact, jumping rope can be great fun if you find a proper way to practice it.Instead of doing the usual twofoot bounce over and over again, people good at rop ejumping often change their pattern every 10 or 20 jumps.A single bounce,a doublebounce,a skip,a kneeup, side swings,as well as a variety of other easytolearn freestyle ropejumping. Now researchers are learning that jumping rope also prepares the brain for learning. It is an exercise allowing both brain hemispheres to perform in parallel to each other. In short, jumping rope can be a lifelong activity requiring little equipment, time and space, yet leading to a much healthier life.1.From the first paragraph we learn that________.A.jumping rope has faded from people’s memoriesB.people now have more advanced equipmentC.racing around the playground was preferredD.people now like to have exercise in a gym2.Rope jumping has not spread widely because________.A.it benefits the cardiovascular systemB.it is neither easy nor enjoyableC.it is considered boring and repetitiveD.it requires little equipment, time and space3.The first sentence in the 3rd paragraph implies________.A.there is only one proper way to followB.the usual way should not be usedC.the easiest way is always the bestD.there are many ways to follow4.According to the researchers, jumping rope________.A.only prepares the brain for learningB.is suitable for students onlyC.helps both brain hemispheres work togetherD.can be dangerous for old people5.What is the author’s attitude towards rope jumping?A.He is arguing against it.B.He is in favor of it.C.He is sitting on the fence of it.D.He is not clear about it.Ⅳ.阅读表达Most American teenagers used to spend their summer vacations holding multiple jobs. However, with the increase in gas prices, teenagers chose to stay at home research, believed to be the first of its kind, found that children who were not facing the person pushing them were less likely to talk, laugh and interact with their parents. The findings were based on a study of 2,722 parents and babies and an experiment where 20 babies were wheeled in buggies for a mile, facing their parents for half the journey and facing away for the other half.Parents using facetoface buggies were twice as likely to talk to their children while the babies’ heart rates fell and they were twice as likely to f all asleep,an indication that they were feeling relaxed and safe.In addition, only one baby out of the 20 studied laughed while sitting in an awayfacing buggy.“Our data suggests that for many babies today, life in a buggy is emotionally impoverished and possibly stressful.Stressed babies grow into anxious adults,” said Dr Suzanne Zeedyk,Developmental Psychologist at Scotland’s Dundee University who carried out the research. The study, which was published by National Literacy Trust as part of its “Talk To Your Baby” campaign, found that 62 percent of all children observed travelled in awayfacing buggies.Zeedyk said it would impact negatively on babies’ development if theyspent a long time in awayfacing buggies, which would undermine their ability to communicate with their parent at a time when their brain was developing rapidly.Laura Barbour of the Sutton Trust,a social mobility charity which funded the research, said buggy manufacturers should look closely at the findings.1.Using awayfacing buggies may________.A.benefit both the
