AIn Germany there are different kinds of high schools. Some prepare students for workers, others prepare them for college. All schools are great places for making friends and learning German. Short daysMost high schools in Germany begin at about 8:00 a.m. and end at about 3:30 p.m. This means your morning will be busy with classes. I was living in Conyers, Georgia the summer when it all happened. I was a second grader, but my best friend Stephanie was only in the first grade. Both of our parents were at work and most of the time they let us go our own way.It was a hot afternoon and we decided to have an adventure in Stephanie’s basement. As I opened the basement door, before us lay the biggest room, full of amazing things like guns, dolls, and old clothes. I ran downstairs, and spotted a red steel can. It was paint. I looked beyond it and there lay even more paint in bright colors like purple, orange, blue and green.“Stephanie, I just found us a project for the day. Get some paintbrushes. We are fixing to paint.” She screamed with excitement as I told her of my secret plans and immediately we got to work. We gathered all the brushes we could find and moved all of our materials to my yard. There on the road in front of my house, we painted big stripes (条纹) of colors across the pavement (人行道). Stripe by stripe, our colors turned into a beautiful rainbow. It was fantastic! The sun was starting to sink. I saw a car in the distance and jumped up as I recognized the car. It was my mother. I couldn’t wait to show h er my masterpiece. The car pulled slowly into the driveway and from the look on my mother’s face, I could tell that I was in deep trouble. My mother shut the car door and walked towards me. Her eyes glaring, she shouted, “What in the world were you thinking I understood when you made castles out of leaves, and climbedthe neighbors’ trees, but this! Come inside right now!” I stood there glaring back at her for a minute, angry because she had insulted (侮辱) my art.“Now go clean it up!” Mother and I began cl eaning the road. Tears ran down my cheeks as I saw my beautiful rainbow turn into black cement.Though years have now passed, I still wonder where my rainbow has gone. I wonder if, maybe when I get older, I can find my rainbow and never have to brush it away. I guess we all need some sort of rainbow to brighten our lives from time to time and to keep our hopes and dreams colorful.4. What did the writer want to do when his mother came home?A.To introduce Stephanie to her.B.To prevent her from seeing his painting.C.To put the materials back in the yard.D.To show his artwork to her.5. In his m other’s eyes, the writer ______.A.was a born artistB.always caused troubleC.was a problem solverD.worked very hard6. The underlined word “rainbow” in the last paragraph refers to ________.A.the rainbow in the skyB.the stripes on the pavementC.something imaginative and funD.important lessons learned in childhood7. It can be learned from the passage that parents should .A.encourage children to paintB.value friendship among childrenC.discover the hidden talent in childrenD.protect rather than destroy children’s dreamsCIf you are a fruit grower—or would like to become one—take advantage of Apple Day to see what’s around. It’s called Apple Day but in practice it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself ison October 21,but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans, Although it doesn't taste of anything special, it's still worth a try, just like the knobbly(多疙瘩的)Cat's Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else. There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you'll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games.Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园).If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale , near Faversham in Kent.8. What can people do at the apple events?A.Attend experts' lectures.B.Visit fruit-loving families.C.Plant fruit trees in an orchard.D.Taste many kinds of apples.9. What can we learn about Decio?A.It is a new variety.B.It has a strange look.C.It is rarely seen now.D.It has a special taste.10. What does the underlined phrase "a pipe dream" in Paragraph 3 mean?A.A practical idea.B.A vain hope.C.A brilliant plan.D.A selfish desire.11. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A.To show how to grow apples.B.To introduce an apple festival.C.To help people select apples.D.To promote apple research.DChinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter. However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap. Parents can see that their c hildren’s skills vary, skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today’s children lack self-respect and self-confidence. The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of self-confidence.Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.12. Parents in China, according to this passage, _______.A.are too strict with their childrenB.are too rich to educate their childrenC.have some problems in educating their children correctlyD.are too poor to educate their children13. The writer of the passage does not seem to be satisfied with ______.A.the parents’ ideas of educating their childrenB.the education systemC.children’s skillsD.children’s hobbies14. Doing some cooking at home helps children ______.A.learn how to serve their parentsB.learn how to become strong and fatC.benefit from it and prepare themselves for the futureD.make their parents believe that they are clever15. According to the last paragraph we can conclude that ______.A.broken radios and television sets are usefulB.one’s curiosity may be useful for his later lifeC.an engineer must fix many broken radiosD.a good student should spend much time repairing radios第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

However, since electricity became more and more expensive, people began to pay much more attention to the energy they could get for their houses a nd the new ways they could find to protect their houses from b oth cold and heat. Now, houses of an old yet new type have been widely built. In some parts of the world, people share their houses with their livestock(家畜). During cold weather, they gather their cows, goats, or ot her animals and keep them on the first floor of their houses. The reasons are that the anim als can be protected from the cold and that they can help to h eat the houses as well. The body heat given off by the animal s rises to the second floor of the houses, where people live. B y sharing their houses with their livestock, people gain a sourc e of heat.People who live in or near cities do not usually keep livestock. However, home builders use the fact that heat rises. This nat ural law can be used in building houses in these areas. Instea d of keeping livestock on the first floor, builders fill it with large rocks. As they are open to the sun’s rays during cold weather , these rocks take in heat. They also give off the heat, and, of course, the warm air rises into the living areas of the houses. So these houses are energy-saving.House-building becomes a great challengeto building designers and energy engineers. They try to meet t his challenge by learning from old traditions and by using mod ern technology. And someday in the future, people will be able to live in more energy-saving houses.24. What did people begin to consider as electricity was no lo nger cheap?A. The climate of their areas.B. The energy for their houses.C. The fashions for their houses.D. Of all the reasons that explain their loneliness, a large geographi cal distance between parents and their children is the major o ne. This phenomenon is commonly known as “Empty Nest Sy ndrome”(空巢综合症).In order to seek better chances outside their countries, many young people have gone abroad, leaving their parents behind with no clear idea of when they will return home. Their parent s spend countless lonely days and nights, taking care of them selves, in the hope that someday their children will come back to stay with them. The fact that most of these young people h ave gone to Europeanized or Americanized societies makes it unlikely that they will hold as tightly to the value of duty as they would have if they had not left their countries. Whatever th e case, it has been noted that the values they hold do not nec essarily match what they actually do. This geographical and cultural distance also prevents t he grown-up children from providing response in time for their aged par ents living by themselves. The situatio n in which grown-up children live far away from their aged parents has been de scribed as “distant parent phenomenon”, which is common bo th in developed countries and in developing countries. Our so ciety has not yet been well prepared for “Empty Nest Syndro me”.32. According to the passage, the loneliness of aged parents i s mainly caused by _________.A. their earlier experience of feeling lonelyB. the unfavorable living conditions in their native countrie sC. the common worry about their incomeD. the geographical distance between parents and childre n33. Many young people have gone abroad, leaving their agedparents behind, to _________.A. live in the countries with more moneyB. seek a better place for their aged parentsC. continue their studies abroadD. realize their dreams in foreign countries34. If young people go abroad, _________.A. they do not hold to the value of duty at allB. they can give some help to their parents back homeC. they cannot do what they should for their parentsD. they believe what they actually do is right35. From the last paragraph, we can infer that ________.A. the situations in the developed and developing countrie s are differentB. “Empty Nest Syndrome” has arrived unexpectedly in ou r societyC. children will become independent as soon as they go a broadD. the aged parents are fully prepared for “Empty Nest Sy ndrome”第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

On Sunday, May 25th, 2014, India’s Malavath Poorna, became the youngest female to climb to the summit of the world’s highest peak—Mount Everest. The 13-year-old girl surpassed (超越) the previous record holder, Nepal’s Nima Chemji Sherpa, who accomplished the same achievement in 2012, at the age of 16. Unlike many young climbers who come from wealthy families, Malavath comes from a poor farming family living in a small village named Pakala in southern India. Most Pakala girls have never seen the inside of a school all their lives. Malavath is one of the fortunate ones that managed to realize their dreams thanks to Swaeroes, a welfare organization whose mission is to help India’s poor children reach their full potential. They helped enroll (使入学) the young girl in a nearby boarding school. Then about nine months ago, Swaeroes provided her with the opportunity to achieve this dream by offering mountaineering training. Not one to pass up (错过) an exciting adventure, the athletic girl signed up. At the end of the two-week period, only two youngsters were selected for the dangerous climb—Malavath was one of them! Then came the big day. On April 15th, 2014, Malavath and 16-year-old Anand Kumar along with their guide Shekhar Babu and a team of Sherpas (夏尔巴人) began the dangerous 8,848-meter trek (艰苦跋涉). While most climbers attempt the peak from the slightly easier Nepalese side, this team had to go via the harder Tibetan side. That’s because the government of Nepal does not allow anyone younger than 16 to climb up the route. It was not easy. In fact, Malavath was sent back to the base camp after she experienced altitude sickness when she got to the advanced base camp set up at an altitude of 6,400 meters. However, the youngster returned three days later, and insisted on continuing. It took 52 days, but on May 25th, 2014, Malavath, who made it to the summit a few minutes ahead of 16-year-old Anand, proudly raised her country’s flag at the top of the world. The young girl hopes that her achievements will inspire poor girls all over the world to try to achieve their dreams. 1. Why did Malavath Poorna’s team choose to climb Mount Everest from the Tibetan side?

I wanted the people in my new home to think I was polite. However, I soon learned that it wasn‘t that simple.Early on, I noticed that people seemed confused(困惑的) by me saying ―xiexie‖, as if it wasn‘t necessary or normal. They looked in the same way to my use of ―qing‖ and the way I would soften my requests, as i n the British way of saying, ―Could you pass me the salt?‖ instead of ―Give me the salt!‖I was very confused until I realized that I was being too formal(正式的) between the person I was talking to and myself. My Chinese friends told me that using ―please‖ actually had the opposite(相反的) effect of politeness – it hurts the building-up of close relationship. But this makes things difficult for those with British manners, as saying ―please‖ and ―thank you‖ is something we learn from a very young age.Deborah Fallows described the way a Westerner sees China as a strange mixture(混合) of politeness and rudeness in The Atlantic: ―A person will pour tea or beer for everyone else before even considering pouring his own. But then another will announce ‗Gei wo yan!‘, that is, ‗Give me salt!‘, with no sign of a please or thank you involved.‖A good example of something that confuses foreigners in China is shouting ―fuwuyuan!‖ at thewaiter or waitress to get their attention, something that would make everyone else in the restaurant hate you in the UK or US.I now understand why people don‘t say ―please‖ or ―thank you‖ in China as often as we do in the UK. However, I‘m afraid I still can‘t bring myself to shout ―fuwuyuan‖ in a crowded restaurant –my inner pol ite British person won‘t let me!29. Why did the author learn the word ―xiexie‖ first when he first learned Chinese?A. He thought it was the easiest word to learn.B. He wanted to be considered polite.C. His Chinese friends advised him to do it.D. He believed that it wouldn‘t confuse people.30. The author learned from his Chinese friends that saying ―xiexie‖ and ―qing‖ _______.A. is not necessary at all in ChinaB. is something people only say to strangersC. is not good for developing a close relationshipD. is a way to judge if a person has good manners31. Which of the following would the author probably agree with?A. Britons and Americans usually have better manners than Chinese people.B. It‘s all right to shout ―fuwuyuan‖ to get a server‘s attention in a crowded restaurant.C. Chinese people should say ―please‖ or ―thank you‖ as often as British people do.D. Foreigners tend to be confused by Chinese people‘s mixture of politeness and rudeness.DDo you speak emoji? If you use a smartphone, the answer is probably yes.Emoji is a visual(视觉的) language. It can express ideas and feelings. Are you hungry? Let friends know by sending pictures like pizza.Emoji exist for almost every need. And people use them a lot. One of the most popular emoji is the ―face with tears of joy.‖ It has been used more than 1.8 billion times on Twitter.Emoji are modern. But the idea is part of a much older tradition. History shows that we‘ve used symbols as language for 5,000 years. One of the oldest examples of visual language is Egyptian(埃及人,埃及的) hieroglyphics(象形文字). Ancient Egyptians began using language symbols around 3250 B.C., according to John Darnell. He is a professor of Egyptology at Yale University. The oldest hieroglyphics show hunters and animals. Later, the pictures came to mean ideas andwords. In 1999, the Japanese company NTT Docomo took away a heart icon(图标) from its mobile phone. It lost customers. So Shigetaka Kurita, a designer, found a fix. He put the heart back. And he made 175 more pictures. He called them emoji, the Japanese word for picture characters.Americans first saw the icons when Apple produced the iPhone, in 2007. ―Once emoji became connected with mobile communication, it developed quickly,‖ says Paul Galloway. He works at the Museum of Modern Art, in New York City. Some people still do not see emoji as a language.
