Thanksgiving is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November. The month of November is in autumn, the main season for harvesting crops.

The w riter O. Henry called Thanksgiving the one holiday that is purely American. It is not a religious holi day. But it has spiritual meaning.

Thanksgiving began w ith the first E uropean settlers in America. They gathered their crops, celebrated and gave thanks for the food.

Tradition says P ilgrim settlers from E ngland celebrated the first Thanksgiving in 1621. There is evidence t hat settlers in other parts of America held earlier Thanksgiving celebrations. But the Pilgrims? Thanksgiving st ory is the most popular.

The P ilgrims were religious dissidents who fled oppression in E ngland. They w ent first to the Netherlands. Then they left that country to establish a colony in North America. The P ilgrims landed in 1620 in w hat late r became know n as P lymouth, Massachusetts.

Their voyage across the Atlantic Ocean was diffi c ult. Their first months in America were di f ficult, too. Abo ut one hundred P ilgrims landed just as autumn w as turning to w inter. During the cold months that follow ed, about half of them died.

When spring came, the P ilgrims began to plant crops. An American Indian named Squanto helped them. When summer ended, the Pilgrims had a good harvest of corn and barley. There was enough food to last t hrough the w inter.

The P ilgrims decided to hold a celebration to give thanks for their harvest. Writings from that time say Pil grim leader William Bradford set a date late in the year. He invited members of a nearby Indian tribe to tak e part. There w ere many kinds of food to eat. The meal included w ild birds such as ducks, geese and turke ys. That thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.

As the American colonies grew, many towns and settlements held thanksgiving or harvest celebrations.

February 14th is a complicated but interesting holiday. First of all, St. Valentine?s Day is not a holiday fro m w ork. No one gets a day off. On Valentine?s Day people usually send romantic cards to someone they lo ve or want to be loved by. The cards are called “valentines”. But it is from the Christians that w e get the stories about St. Valentine?s Day that most people have com e to believe. One story is about a Christian man w hose name so unded something like “Valentine.” He lived around AD 250. At that time the Roman Emperor, Claudius II, refused to allow any Roman soldiers to get m arried for any reason whatsoever. Christian couples came to Valentine to be married. So Valentine w ould ma rry them in a Christian w ay. He w as discovered and put in prison by the Emperor. At last he hears the burr-burr of the ringing tone, i mmediately follow ed by rapid pips demanding his money, but he is now so upset that he knocks down the c oins he has placed ready on the top of the box. Having at last located them, he dials again: the pips are re peated and he hastily inserts the coins.
