When it comes to whether to choose an electronic dictionary or a traditional paper one, different people will offer different opinions. Though electronic dictionaries are more popular now and often quicker and easier to use, traditonal paper dictionaries are the better tool for study, especially of a foreign language.Traditional dictionaries, by providing more detailed definitions and examples, have greater capacity of vocabulary and better serve for study purposes. Some famous publishing houses have issued a lot of authoritative dictionaries like Oxford and Webster. People can choose any paper format from many different publishers as a study tool while there are frequently many errors in electronic ones. In addition, electronic dictionaries do not necessarily provide enough detail to provide accurate information.Though paper dictionaries are generally much heavier than electronic ones, students can use them at any time and in any place because they do not rely on electricity. Though the size of the letters in some dictionaries is very small, it does not consume energy unless some count the energy a person uses to carry it around! Think of all the money people could save on batteries, too! When people travel, an electronic dictionary may be more convenient. However, if somebody wants to read a book in a foreign language, a traditional dictionary is the perfect tool. Paper dictionaries are not merely a tool to check the meaning of words, but also a book which can be used to increase your vocabulary.Note-writingMarch 2, 2012 Dear Mr. Maxim,I take great pleasure in sending my most ardent and earnest congratulations on your promotion to professor at the university! Some of them prefer to live alone by renting a room near school, while others prefer to live with classmates on campus. As for me, I like to live with classmates in group domitory on campus. There are several vital reasons for my opinion. First, it is very convenient to ask classmates questions about courses and have various discussions with them. The main task of students is to achieve outstanding academic performance rather than anything else. Living on campus benefits not only me but also my classmates as we can help each other. Second, it can make me have better personal relations. It is not enough to communicate with classmates and friends just in classroom. Instead we need see and talk to each other frequently in spare time so as to maintain friendship. Third, it can save me much time. Living outside school will absolutely cost me more time to go to classes and get back. Put all the wasted time together, and that is really a considerable amount. With the saved time, I can study longer to improve my GPA (Grade Point Average平均绩点;平均分). Meanwhile, I can also participate in more association activities in order to make new friends and enrich my school life.In conclusion, living on campus is the best choice for college students. It helps them to perform better in study and establish better personal relations. Contrarily, living off campus would produce adverse impact and therefore should be avoided.Note-writingJan. 2, 2012 Dear Bill,As the Spring Festival is drawing near, I am very gald to invite you to a dinner party with several other friends of ours. Choose the one that you think is the correct answer.Text AA Wise ManHe was a funny looking man with a cheerful face and a good-natured talker. He was described by his student, the great philosopher, as "the best and most just and wisest man." Yet, this same man was condemned to death for his beliefs. The man was the Greek philosopher, Socrates, and he was condemned for not believing in the recognized god and for corrupting young people. The second charge stemmed from his association with numerous young men who came to Athens from all over the civilized world to study under him.Socrates' method of teaching was ask question and, by pretending not to know the answers, to press his students into thinking for themselves. His teachings had influence, Socrates himself never wrote a word.Socrates encouraged new ideas and free thinking in the young, and this was frightening to the conservative people. They wanted him silenced. Yet, many were probably surprised that he accepted death so readily.Socrates had the right to ask for a lesser penalty, and he probably could have won over enough of the people who had previously condemned him. But Socrates, as a firm believer in law, reasoned that it was proper to submit to the death sentence. So, he calmly accepted his fate and drank a cup of poison hemlock in the presence of his grief-stricken friends and students.66. In the first paragraph, the word yet is used to introduce _____.A. contrast.B. a sequence.C. emphasis.D. an example.67. Socrates was condemned to death because he _____.A. firmly believed in law.B. was a philosopher.C. published outspoken articles.D. advocated original opinions.68. By mentioning that Socrates himself never wrote anything, the writer implies that _____.A. it was surprising that Socrates was so famous.B. Socrates was not so learned as he is reputed to have been.C. Socrates used the work of his students in teaching.D. that authorities refused to publish Socrates' works.69. Socrates accepted the death penalty to show _____.A. his belief in his students.B. his contempt for conservatives.C. his recognition of the legal system.D. that he was not afraid of death.Text BIn English, along a stretch of the north-east coast which gently curves from Northumberland to the estuary of the river Tees, there was a spot, typical of many on that coast, where sea-coal collected richly and effortlessly. This coal was a coarsepowder, clean and brilliant. It seemed to bear little resemblance to the large, filthy lumps put onto the fire. Although it was coal, it was perfectly clean and it was silently deposited at high tide in a glittering carpet a kilometer long for the local community to gather up.The great needed for sea-coaling expeditions was a curious and traditionally proven assortment which never varied from community to community along the entire north-east coastline. Sacks were essential to put the coal in, and string to tie the neck of each sack when it was full. A wooden rake was used to scrape the coal from the beach. The only alternative to the rake was a flat piece of board held in the hand. A flat, broad shovel to lift the raked coal into the bags, completed the portable hardware. But the most crucial item of equipment was a bicycle, a special kind of rusty, stripped-down model which was the symbol of the sea-coaling craft. A lady's bike wasno good because it lacked a crossbar, and that was an essential element in transporting sea-coal. One full sack could be slung through the triangular frame of a man's bike, another over the crossbar and, sometime, even a third on top of that. The beauty of the metal bar against the full, wet sacks forced excess water out of the coal while it was being wheeled home. On a good day, the path to the beach was generally a double snail track of water that had been forced from each end of a trail of coal sacks.70. The difference between the two types of coal was that sea coal _____.A. burnt better.B. was cheaper.C. was more finely-grained.D. came in big pieces.71. Certain equipment was used because _____.A. the people were very traditional.B. it could be made by the communities.C. it had proved to be practical.D. the communities had curious habits.72. To carry three sacks of coal on a bicycle it was necessary to _____.A. put one of them on the saddle.B. balance them all on the crossbar.C. balance two on the crossbar.D. remove the excess liquid.73. By using the bicycle _____.A. the collection could ride home.B. coal could be moved easily over the sand.C. the collection could sell more coal.D. excess liquid could be removed.Text CWhen we think of creative people the names that probably spring to mind are those of men such as Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Pablo Picasso, i.e., great artists, inventors and scientists -- a select and exceptionally gifted body of men with rare talent and genius. The tendency to regard creativity and imaginative thinking as the exclusive province of a lucky few disregards the creative and imaginative aspects inherent in the solution of many of the tasks we regularly have to face -- the discovery and development of new method and techniques, the improvement of old methods, existing inventions and products.Everyone has creative ability to some extent. Creative thinking involves posing oneself a problem and then finding a solution along new and unconventional lines. It involves drawing new comparisons, discovering new combinations, and/or newapplications of thing that are already known. It follows, then, that a creative person will exhibit great intellectual curiosity and imagination. He will be alert and observant with a great store of information which he will be able to sort out and combine, in the solution of problems. He will be emotionally receptive to new and unconventional ideas and will be less interested in facts than in their implications. Most important of all, he will be able to communicate freely and will not be too concerned about other people's reaction to his apparently 'crazy' ideas. People called the Wright brothers mad but it did not stop them from becoming the first men to construct and fly a heavier-than-air craft.74. The author believes that creative thinking _____.A. is only possessed by great artists.B. requires rare talent and genius.C. is needed in solving many problems.D. belongs to a few lucky people.75. Creative thinking involves _____.A. drawing new pictures of old things.B. observing the actions of great people.C. facing the problem and finding a solution.D. discovering new emotions.76. A creative person must look at facts _____.A. for their face-value.B. for what they imply.C. and remember them.D. which are less interesting.77. In order to solve scientific problems, people _____.A. should not be afraid of others' opinions.B. should be as crazy as possible.C. must possess strange notions.D. should have more freedom.Text DRock music has grown in including hundreds of musical styles, some of which define a broad mainstream, while others are supported by small but devoted audiences. As in earlier decades, major record companies have used independent labels to find new trends and locate promising talent.Rap music continued to develop in the 1990s, stimulating controversy over its sometimes violent lyrics. Many rap styles gained popularity, including the gangsta (gangster) style of Ice-T and Dr. Dre; the pop-rap style of hip-hop and jazz developed by Us3. Heavy metal has remained popular, as evidenced by huge arena concerts. A style known as alternative rock, popularized in the late 1980s by the group R. E. M., combines heavy-metal guitars, folk and punk influences, and ambiguous lyrics. The alternative style consisted of a number of substyles, such as the grunge rock of Seattle-based groups Nirvana and Soundgarden. Techno, a style of dance music that gained popularity in the 1990s, combines computer-generated, disco-like rhythms with digital samples.Acid jazz is a related style, combining rock and jazz influences.Music video has remained an important means of introducing new performers. Other new media technologies, including the use of fiber-optic cables and satellite transmissions, have changed the way people access popular music. Advances in recording-studio technology, digital recording equipment, and synthesis techniques have allowed musicians, producers, and music engineers to exert far greater control over their final product than previously possible. In live concerts, miniaturized and relatively portable amplification equipment has been introduced to create the illusion of direct communication between theaudience and the performers. In contrast, the Lo-Fi movement developed in 1990s as a reaction against the glossy production values of mainstream popular music. This movement stresses primitive, low-fidelity recording techniques that reflect those used in the 50s and 70s.78. The following statements about music are true EXCEPT _____.A. There are now hundreds of musical styles included in rock music.B. Most rock styles are supported by a large number of devoted people.C. Some rock styles are called mainstream style because of their popularity.D. Different rock styles are labeled differently by major record companies.79. There are some discussions or arguments about rap music because _____.A. it was not so popular in the 1980s as in the 1990s.B. there are so many kinds of rap music available.C. it combines with many other musical styles.D. sometimes its lyrics are related to violence.80. What brings about an improvement of sound quality in music industry?A. Advances in studio technology, digital recording equipment and synthesis techniques.B. New media technologies, as the use of fiber-optic cables and satellite transmissions.C. miniaturized and relatively portable amplification equipment used in live concert.D. Music video technologies that introduce new performers quickly, easily and artistically.SECTION B SKIMMING AND SCANNING [5 min.]In this section there are six passages with a total of 10 multiple-choice questions. But if you have a doorstep, a balcony or even just a windowsill, you can have your own mini-garden.Mini-garden with vegetables, fruit trees and herbs can be fascinating fun, and you can mix or match all vegetables or vegetables and flowers. You can grow them in greenhouses, under fluorescent lights, or in a sunny window.Perhaps now, with the prices of fresh vegetables competing with those of meats and dairy products, this is more than ever an important aspect of indoor gardening. But entirely aside from the economic dividends, there is the pleasure of enjoying a truly fresh product, one you grew yourself from plant to plate.。

Choose the one that you think is the best answer.Mark your answers on Answer Sheet Two.TEXT AInundated by more information than we can possibly hold in our heads, we’re increasingly handing off the job of remembering to search engines and smart phones. Google is even reportedly working on eyeglasses that could one day recognize faces and supply details about whoever you’re looking at. But new research shows thatoutsourcing our memory — and expecting that information will be continually and instantaneously available - is changing our cognitive habits.Research conducted by Betsy Sparrow, an assistant professor of psychology at Columbia University, has identified three new realities about how we process information in the Internet age. First, her experiments showed that when we don’t know the answer to a question, we now think about where we can find the nearest Web connection instead of the subject of the question itself. A second revelation is that when we expect to be able to find information again later on, we don't remember it as well as when we think it might become unavailable. And then there is the researchers’ final observation: the expectation that we’ll be able to locate information down the line leads us to form a memory not of the fact itself but of where we'll be able to find it.But this handoff comes with a downside. Skills like critical thinking and analysis must develop in the context of facts: we need something to think and reason about, after all. And these facts can't be Googled as we go; they need to be stored in the original hard drive, our long-term memory. Especially in the case of children, ''factual knowledge must precede skill;' says Daniel Willingham, a professor of psychology, at the University of Virginia - meaning that the days of drilling the multiplication table and memorizing the names of the Presidents aren't over quite yet. Adults, too, need to recruit a supply of stored knowledge in order to situate and evaluate new informalion they encounter. You can t Google context.Last, there's the possibility, increasingly terrifying to contemplate, that our machines will fail us. As Sparrow puts it, “The experience of losing our Internet connection becomes more and more like losing a friend.” If you're going to keep your memory on your smart phone, better make sure it's fully charged.81. Google’s eyeglasses are supposed to ____.[A]improve our memory[B]function like memory[C]help us see faces better[D]work like smart phones82. According to the passage, “cognitive habits” refers to ____.[A] how we deal with information[B] functions of human memory[C] the amount of information[D] the availability of information83. Which of the following statements about Sparrow’s research is CORRECT?[A] We remember people and things as much as before.[B] We remember more Internet connections than before.[C] We pay equal attention to location and content of information.[D]We tend to remember location rather than the core of facts.84. What does the author mean by “context”?[A]It refers to long-term memory.[B]It refers to a new situation.[C]It refers to a store of knowledge.[D]It refers to the search engine.85. What is the implied message of the author?[A]Web connections aid our memory.[B]People differ in what to remember.[C] People need to exercise their memory.[D] People keep memory on smart phones.Text BI was a second-year medical student at the university, and was on my second day of rounds at a nearby hospital. My university's philosophy was to get students seeing patients early in their education. Nice idea, but it overlooked one detail: second-year students know next to nothing about medicine.Assigned to my team that day was an attending - a senior faculty member who was there mostly to make patients feel they weren't in the hands of amateurs. Many attendings were researchers who didn't have much recent hospital experience. Mine was actually an arthritis specialist. Also along was a resident (the real boss, with a staggering mastery of medicine, at least to a rookie like myself). In addition, there are two interns (住院实习医生). These guys were just as green as I was. but in a scarier way: they had recently graduated from the medical school, so they were technically MDs.I began the day at 6:30 am. An intern and I did a quick check of our eight patients; later, we were to present our findings to the resident and then to the attending.I had three patients and the intern had the other five-piece of cake. But when I arrived in the room of 71-year-old Mr. Adams, he was sitting up in bed, sweating heavily and panting (喘气).He'd just had a hip operation and looked terrible. I listened to his lungs with my stethoscope, but they sounded dear. Next I checked the log of his vital signs and saw that his respiration and heart rate had been climbing, but his t emperature was steady. It didn’t seem like heart failure, nor did it appear to be pneumonia. So I asked Mr. Adams what he thought was going on.“It s really hot in here. Doc,” he replied. So I attributed his condition to the stuffy room and told him the rest of the team would return in a few hours. He smiled and feebly waved goodbye. At 8:40 am., during our team meeting, “Code Blue Room 307!” blared from the loudspeaker.I froze. That was Mr. Adams’s room. When we arrived, he was motionless. The autopsy (尸体解剖} later found Mr. Adams had suffered a massive pulmonary embolism (肺部检塞) A blood clot had formed in his leg, worked its way to his lungs, and cut his breathing capacity in half. His symptoms had been textbook, heavy perspiration and shortness of breath despite clear lungs. The only thing was: I hadn't read that chapter in the textbook yet. And I was too scared, insecure, and proud to ask a real doctor for help. This mistake has haunted me for nearly 30 years, but what’s particularly frustrating is that the same medical education system persists. Who knows how many people have died or suffered harm at the hands of students as naive as I, and how many more will?86. Why was the author doing rounds in a hospital?[A]He himself wanted to have practice.[B]Students of all majors had to do so.[C]It was part of his medical training.[D]He was on a research team.87. We learn that the author’s team members had ____.[A] some professional deficiency[B] long been working there[C] adequate knowledge[D] much practical experience88. While the author was examining Mr. Adams, all the following symptoms caught his attention EXCEPT ____.[A] steady temperature[B] faster heart rate[C] breathing problem[D] moving difficulty89. “His symptoms had been textbook” means that his symptoms were ____.[A]part of the textbook[B] explained in the textbook[C] no longer in the textbook[D] recently included in the textbook90. At the end of the passage, the author expresses _____ about the medical education system.[A]optimism[B]hesitation[C] support[D] concernTEXT CThe war on smoking, now five decades old and counting, is one of the nation's greatest public health success stories - but not for everyone. As a whole, the country has made amazing progress. In 1964, four in ten adults in the US smoked; today fewer than two in ten do. But some states - Kentucky, South Dakota and Alabama, to name just a few - seem to have missed the message that smoking is deadly.Their failure is the greatest disappointment in an effort to save lives that was started on Jan 11, 1964, by the first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health. Its finding that smoking is a cause of lung cancer and other diseases was major news then. The hazards of smoking were just starting to emerge. The report led to cigarette warning labels, a ban on TV ads and eventually an anti-smoking movement that shifted the nation’s attitude on smoking. Then, smokers were cool. Today, many are outcasts, rejected by restaurants, bars, public buildings and even their own workplaces Millions of lives have been saved. The formula for success is no longer guesswork: Adopt tough warning labels, air public service ads, fund smoking cessation programs and impose smoke-free laws. But the surest wa\ to prevent smoking, particularly among price-sensitive teens, is to raise taxes. If you can stop them from smoking, you’ve won the war. Few people start smoking after turning 19.The real-life evidence of taxing power is powerful. The 10 slates with the lowest adult smoking rates slap an average tax of $ on every pack - three times the average tax in the states with the highest smoking rates.New York has the highest cigarette tax in the country, at $ per pack, and just 12 percent of teens smoke - far below the national average of 18 percent. Compare that with Kentucky, where taxes are low (60 cents), smoking restrictions arc weak and the teen smoking rate is double New York’s. Other low-tax stateshave similarly dismal records.Enemies of high tobacco taxes cling to the tired argument that they fall disproportionately on the poor. True, but so do the deadly effects of smoking far worse than a tax. The effect of the taxes is amplified further when the revenue is used to fund initiatives that help smokers quit or persuade teens not to start..Anti-smoking forces have plenty to celebrate this week, having helped avoid8 million premature deaths in the past 50 years. But as long as 3,000 adolescentsand teens lake their first puff each day, the war is not won.91. What does "counting" mean in the context?[A] Including. [B]. Calculating[C] Relying on.. [D] Continuing92. According to the context, "Their failure" refers to________.[A] those adults who continue to smoke[B] those states that missed the message[C] findings of the report[D] hazards of smoking93. The following are all efforts that led to the change of attitude on smoking EXCEPT_______.[A] cigarette warning labels[B] rejecting by the public[C] anti-smoking campaigns[D] anti-smoking legislation94. According to the author, raising tax on cigarettes_______.[A] is unfair to the poor[B] is an effective measure[C] increases public revenue[D] fails to solve the problem95. What is the passage mainly about?[A] How to stage anti-smoking campaigns.[B] The effects of the report on smoking and health.[C] The efforts to cut down on teenage smoking.[D] Tax as the surest path to cut smoking.TEXT DAttachment Parenting is not Indulgent Parenting. Attachment parents do not spoil their children. Spoiling is done when a child is given everything that they want regardless of what they need and regardless of what is practical.。

Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET TWO.TEXT AAfter breakfast the boys wandered out into the play-ground. Here the day-boys were gradually assembling. They were sons of the local clergy, of the officers at the Depot, and of such manufacturers or men of business as the old town possessed. Presently a bell rang, and they all trooped into school. This consisted of a large, long room at opposite ends of which two under masters conducted the second and third forms, and of a smaller one, leading out of it, used by Mr. Watson, who taught the first form. To attach the preparatory to the senior school these three classes were known officially, on speech days and in reports, as upper, middle, and lower second. Philip was put in the last. The master, a red-faced man with a pleasant voice, was called Rice; he had a jolly manner with boys, and the time passed quickly. Philip was surprised when it was quarter to eleven and they were let out for ten minutes' rest. The whole school rushed noisily into the play-ground. The new boys were told to go into the middle, while the others stationed themselves along opposite walls. They began to play Pig in the Middle. The old boys ran from wall to wall while the new boys tried to catch them: when one was seized and the mystic words said - one, two, three, and a pig for me - he became a prisoner and, turning sides, helped to catch those who were still free. Philip saw a boy running past and tried to catch him, but his limp gave him no chance; and the runners, taking their opportunity, made straight for the ground he covered. Then one of them had the brilliant idea of imitating Philip’s clumsy run. Other boys saw it and began to laugh; then they all copied the first; and they ran round Philip, limping grotesquely, screaming with shrill laughter. They lost their heads with the delight of their new amusement, and choked with helpless merriment. One of them tripped Philip up and he fell, heavily as he always fell, and cut his knee. They laughed all the louder when he got up. A boy pushed him from behind, and he would have fallen again if another had not caught him. The game was forgotten in the entertainment of Philip’s deformity. Philip was completely scared. He could not make out why they were laughing at him. His heart beat so that he could hardly breathe, and he was more frightened than he had ever been in his life. He stood still stupidly while the boys ran round him, mimicking and laughing; they shouted to him to try and catch them; but hedid not move. He did not want them to see him run any more. He was using all his strength to prevent himself from crying.81. From the beginning of the passage we learn that ________.A. some pupils came from the local areaB. the school only accepted day-boysC. the school had only three classesD. Philip’s class was part of the senior sch ool82. What was Philip’s reaction to his class?A. He thought class was too short.B. He found his class surprising.C. He seemed to have enjoyed it.D. How did Philip feel in the end?A. He was ashamed of himself.B. He was very nervous.C. He was really horrified.D. He felt himself stupid.TEXT BFor parents who send their kids off to college saying, “These will be the best years of your life,” it would be very appropriate to add, “If you can handle the stress of college life.”Freshmen are showing up already stressed out, according to the latest research study that reported students’ emotional health levels at their lowest since the survey started in 1985. While in school, more students are working part-time and near-full-time jobs.At graduation, only 29 percent of seniors have jobs lined up.Pressure to excel often creates stress, and many students are not learning how to effectively handle this stress. Let me show five facts that I believe every college student should know about stress.Fir st, stress can make smart people do stupid things. Stress causes what brain researchers call “cortical inhibition.” In simple terms, stress inhibits a part of the brain responsible for decision-making and reaction time and can adversely affect other mental abilities as well.Second, the human body doesn’t discriminate between a big stressful event and a little one. Any stressful experience will create about 1,400 biochemical events in your body. If any amount of stress is left unchecked, many things can occur within the body, including premature aging, impaired cognitive function and energy drain.Third, stress can become your new pattern. When you regularly experience negative feelings and high amounts of stress, your brain recognizes this as your normal state. This then becomes the new norm, or baseline for your emotional state.Fourth, stress can be controlled. Countless studies demonstrate that people can restructure their emotional state using emotion-refocusing techniques. These techniques help you recognize how you are feeling and shift to a more positive emotional, mental and physical state. One technique involves slowing your thoughts and focusing on your heartbeat, breathing slowly and deeply, and focusing on the positive feeling that you receive. Finally, stress can be lessened by loving what you study. Barbara Frederickson, a leading international authority on the importance of positive emotions, says humans are genetically programmed to seek positive emotions such as love and joy. It's suggested to choose a major or career path you love and enjoy. Otherwise, you could end up fighting against your own biology.86. The author cites the latest research study in order to show that ________.A. students are studying harder in collegeB. most students have part-time job nowC. stress continues to the time of graduationD. students only feel stressed while in school87. According to the passage, stress might cause all the following negative effects EXCEPT ________.A. socialB. mentalC. emotionalD. physical88. In the author’s opinion, stress can be controlled by ________.A. doing what you preferB. identifying your present emotional state firstC. finding a more positive feeling firstD. focusing on your emotional state89. Accord ing to the context, what does “your own biology” mean in the last paragraph?A. Your current major.B. Your future job.C. Your future research.D. Your preference.90. Which of the following is the best as the title of the passage?A. Causes of Stress.B. Type of Stress.College C. Life and Stress. D. Stress and Control Methods.TEXT CFor anyone who doubts that the texting revolution is upon us, consider this: The average 13- to 17-year-old sends and receives 3,339 texts a month—more than 100 per day, according to the Nielsen Co., the media research firm. Adults are catching up. People from ages 45 to 54 sent and received 323 texts a month in the second quarter of 2010, up 75% from a year ago, Nielsen says.Behind the texting explosion is a fundamental shift in how we view our mobile devices. That they are phones is increasingly beside the point.Part of what's driving the texting surge among adults is the popularity of social media. Sites like Twitter, with postings of no more than 140 characters, are creating and reinforcing the habit of communicating in micro-bursts.Economics has much to do with texting’s popularity. Text messages cost carriers less than traditional mobile voice transmissions, and so they cost users less. Sprint Nextel has reconceived its Virgin Mobile brand to cater to heavy texters in a difficult economy. For $25 per month, users get unlimited texting, email, social networking and 300 talk minutes; for another $15, they get an additional 900 talk minutes. The name of the brand's new wireless plan: “Beyond Talk.”Texting’s rise over conversation is changing the way we interact, social scientists and researchers say. We are now inclined to text to relay difficult information. We stare at our phone when we want to avoid eye contact. Rather than make plans in advance, we engage in what research have named “micro-coordination”—”I’ll txt u in 10mins when I know wh/ restrnt.”Texting saves us time, but it steals from quiet reflection. “When pe ople have a mobile device and have even a little extra time, they will communicate with someone in their life,” says Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project. And the phone conversation will never be completely obsolete. Deal makers and other professionals still spend much of the day on the phone. Researchers say people are more likely to use text-based communications at the preliminary stages of projects. The phone comes into play when there are multiple options to consider or important decisions to be made.91. What is the passage mainly about?A. Texting’s popularity and effect.B. Role of texting in business.C. Preference to texting over thinking.D. Innovation of mobile devices.TEXT DThe healthy adolescent boy or girl likes to do the real things in life, to do the things that matter. He would rather be a plumber’s mate and do a real job that requires doing than learn about hydrostatics sitting at a desk, without understanding what practical use they are going to be. A girl would rather look after the baby than learn about child care. Logically we should learn about things before doing them and that is presumably why the pundits enforce this in our educational system. But it is not the natural way-nor, I venture to think, the best way. The adolescent wants to do things first for only then does he appreciate the problems involved and want to learn more about them. They do these things better in primitive life, for there at puberty the boy joins his father in making canoes, patching huts, going out fishing or hunting. He is serving his apprenticeship in the actual。

In the home, many (32) devices are powered by electricity. Every day, trains, buses and subways take us to and from work. We rarely (34) to consider why or how they run—until something goes wrong. In the summer of 1959, something did go wrong with the power-plant that provided New York with electricity. For a great many hours, life came almost to a (35) . trains refused to move and the people in them sat in the dark, powerless to do anything; lifts stopped working, so that even if you were lucky enough not to be between two floors, you had the unpleasant task of finding your way down (37) of stairs. For each question, there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer and mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET TWO.PASSAGE ONEInundated by more information that we can possibly hold in our heads, we’re increasingly handing off the job of remembering to search engines and smart phones. Google is even reportedly working on eyeglasses that could one day recognize faces and supply details about whoever you’re looking at. But new research shows that outsourcing our memory—and expecting that information will be continually and instantaneously available—is changing our cognitive habits. Research conducted by Betsy Sparrow, an assistant professor of psychology at Columbia University, has identified three new realities about how we process information in the Internet age. First, her experiments showed that even we don’t know the answer to a question, we now think about where we can find the nearest Web connection instead of the subject of the question itself. A second revelation is that when we expect to be able to find information again later on, we don’t remember it as well as when we think it might become unavailable. And then there is the researchers’final observation: the expectation that we’ll be able to locate information down the line leads us to form amemory not of the fact itself but of where we’ll be able to find it.But this handoff comes with a downside. Skills like critical thinking and analysis must develop in the context of facts: we need something to think and reason about, after all. And these facts can’t be Googled as we go; they need to be stored in the original hard drive, our long-term memory. Especially in the case of children, “factual knowledge must precede skill,”says Daniel Willingham, a professor of psychology, at the University of Virginia—meaning that the days of drilling the multiplication table and memorizing the names of the Presidents aren’t over quite yet. Adults, too, need to recruit a supply of stored knowledge in order to situate and evaluate new information they encounter. You can’t Google context.Last, there’s the possibility, increasingly terrifying to contemplate, that our machines will fail us. As Sparrow puts it, “The experience of losing our Internet connection becomes more and more liking losing a friend.”If you’re going to keep your memory on your smart phone, better make sure it’s fully charged.41. Google’s eyeglasses are supposed to .A. improve our memoryB. function like memoryC. help us see faces betterD. work like smart phones42. Which of the following statements about Sparrow’s research is CORRECT?A. We remember people and thins as much as before.B. We remember more Internet connections that before.C. We pay equal attention to location and content of information.D. We tend to remember location rather than the core of facts.43. What is the implied message of the author?A. Web connections aid our memory.B. People differ in what to remember.C.People keep memory on smart phones.D. People need to exercise their memory.PASSAGE TWOI was a second-year medical student at the university, and was on my second day of rounds at a nearby hospital. My university’s philosophy was to get students seeing patients early in their education. Nice idea, but it overlooked one detail: second-year students know next to nothing about medicine.Assigned to my team that day was an attending—a senior faculty member who was there mostly to make patients feel they weren’t in the hands of amateurs. Many attendings were researchers who didn’t have much recent hospital experience. Mine was actually an arthritis sepcialist. Also along was a resident (the real boss, with a staggering mastery of medicine, at least to a rookie like myself). In addition, there were two interns. These guys were just as green as I was, but in a scarier way: they had recently graduated from the medical school, so they were technically MDs.I began the day at 6:30 a.m. An intern and I did a quick check of our eight patients; later, we were to present our findings to the resident and then to the attending. I had three patients and the intern had the other five—piece of cake. But when I arrived in the room of 71-year-old Mr. Adams, he was sitting up in bed, sweating heavily and panting. He’d just had a hip operation and looked terrible. I listened to his lungs with my stethoscope, but they sounded clear. Next I checked the log of his vital signs and saw that his respiration and heart rate had been climbing, but his temperature was steady. It didn’t seem like heart failure, nor did it appear to be pneumonia. So I asked Mr. Adams what he thought was going on. “It’s really hot in here, Doc,”he replied. So I attributed his condition to the stuffy room and told him the rest of the team would return in a few hours. He smiled and feebly waved goodbye. At 8:40 am., during our team meeting, “Code Blue Room 307!”blared from the loudspeaker.I froze. That was Mr. Adam’s room. When we arrived, he was motionless. The autopsy later found Mr. Adams had suffered a massive pulmonary embolism (肺部栓塞). A blood clot had formed in his leg, worked its way to his lungs, and cut his breathing capacity in half. His symptoms had been textbook: heavy perspiration and shortness of breath despite clear lungs. The only thing was: I hadn’t read that chapter in the textbook yet. And I was so scared, insecure, and proud to ask a real doctor for help. This mistake has haunted me for nearly 30 years, but what’s particularly frustrating is that the same medical education system persists. Who knows how many people have died or suffered harm at the hands of students as naïve as I, and how many more will?44. We learn that the author’s team members had .A. much practical experienceB. adequate knowledgeC. long been working thereD. some professional deficiency45. “His symptoms had been textbook”means that his symptoms were .A. part of the textbookB. no longer in the textbookC. recently included in the textbookD. explained in the textbook46. At the end of the passage, the author expresses about the medical education system.A. optimismB. hesitationC. concernD. supportPASSAGE THREEThe war on smoking, now five decades old and counting, is one of the public health success stories—but not for everyone. As a whole, the country has made amazing progress. In 1964, four in ten adults in the US smoked; today fewer than two in ten do. But some states—Kentucky, South Dakota and Alabama, to name just a few—seem to have missed the message that smoking is deadly.Their failure is the greatest disappointment in an effort to save lives that was started on Jan. 11, 1964, by the first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health. Its finding that smoking is a cause of lung cancer and other diseases was major news then. The hazards of smoking were just starting to emerge. The report led to cigarette warning lables, a ban on TV ads andeventually an anti-smoking movement that shifted the nation’s attitude on smoking. Then, smokrs were cool. Today, many are outcasts, rejected by restaurants, bars, public buildings and even their own workplaces. Millios of lives have been saved. The formula for success is no longer guesswork: Adopt tough warning labels, air public service ads, fund smoking cessation programs and impose smoke-free laws. But the surest way to prevent smoking, particularly among price-sensitive teen, is to raise taxes. If you can stop them from smoking, you’ve won the war. Few people start smoking after turning 19.The real-life evidence of taxing power is powerful. The 10 states with the lowest adult smoking rates slap an average tax of $ 2.42 on every pack—three times the average tax in the states with the highest smoking rates.New York has the highest cigarette tax in the country, at $ 4.35 per pack, and just 12 percent of teems smoke—far below the national average of 18 percent. Compare that with Kentucky, where taxes are low (60 cents), smoking restrictions are weak and the teen smoking rate is double New York’s. Other low-tax states have similarly dismal records. Enemies of high tobacco taxes cling to the tired argument that they fall disproportionately on the poor. True, but so do the deadly effects of smoking—far worse that a tax. The effect of the taxes is amplified furtherwhen the revenue is used to fund initiatives that help smokers quit or persuade teens not to start.Anti-smoking forces have plenty to celebrate this week, having helped avoid 8 million premature deaths in the past 50 years. But as long as 3,000 adolescents and teens take their first puff each day, the war is not won.47. According to the context, “Their failur”refers to .A. those adults who continue to smokeB. those states that missed the messageC. findings of the reportD. hazards of smoking48. What is the passage mainly about?A. How to stage anti-smoking campaigns.B. The effects of the report on smoking and health.C. Tax as the surest path to cut smoking.D. The efforts to cut down on teeange smoking.PASSAGE FOURAttachment Parenting is not Indulgent Parenting. Attachment parents do not “spoil”their children. Spoiling is done when a child is given everything that they want regardless of what they need and regardles of what is practical. Indulgent parents give toys for tantrums(发脾气),icecream for breakfast. Attachment parents don’t give their children everything that they want, they give their children everything that they need. Attachment parents believe that love and comfort are free and necessary. Not sweets or toys.Attachment Parenting is not “afraid of tears”parenting. Our kids cry. The difference is that we understand that tantrums and tears come from emotions and not manipulation. And our children understand this too. They cry and have tantrums sometimes, of course. But they do this because their emotions are so overwhelming that they need to get it out. They do not expect to be “rewarded”for their strong negative emotions; they simply expect that we will listen. We pick up our babies when they cry, and we respond to the tears of our older children because we believe firmly that comfort is free, love is free, and that when a child has need for comfort and love, it is our job to provide those things. We are not afraid of tears. We don’t avoid them. We hold our children through them and teach them that when they are hurt or frustrated we are here to comfort them and help them work through their emotions. Attachment Parenting is not Clingy Parenting. I do not cling to my children. In fact, I’m pretty free-range. As soon as they can move they usually move away from me and let me set up a chase as they crawl, run, skip and hop on their merry way to explore the world. Sure, I carry them and hug them and chase them and kiss them and rock them and sleepwith them. But this is not me following them everywhere and pulling them back to me. This is me being a home base. The “attachment”comes from their being allowed to attach to us, not from us attaching to them like parental leeches.Attachment Parenting is not Selfish Parenting. It is also not selfless parenting. We are not doing it for us, and we are not doing it to torment ourselves.Attachment parenting is not Helicopter Parenting. I don’t hover. I supervise. I follow, I teach, I demonstrate, I explain. I don’t slap curious hands away. I show how to do things safely. I let my child to the things that my child wishes to do, first with help and then with supervision and finally with trust. I don’t insist that my 23 month old hold my hand when we walk on the sidewalk because I know that I can recall him with my voice because he trusts me to allow him to explore and he trusts me to explain when something is dangerous and to help him satisfy his curiosities safely. Most of the negative things that I hear about “attachment parents”are completely off-base and describe something that is entirely unlike Attachment Parenting. Attachment Parenting is child-centric and focuses on the needs of the child. Children need structure, rules, and boundaries. Attachment Parents simply believe that the child and the parents are allies, not adversaries. And that children are taught, not trained.49. According to the author, what should parents do when their kids cry?A. Providing comfort and love.B. Trying to stop kids crying.C. Holding them till they stop.D. Rewarding kids with toys.50. What does “free-range”mean according to the passage?A. Fond of providing a home base.B. Reading to play games with my kids.C. Curious to watch what games they play.D. Willing to give kids freedom of movement.SECTION B SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONSIn this section there are five short answer questions based on the passage in Section A.
