Facebook is a social website that attracted millions of members. But it seems that some people have something 53 to say about it. To them I have only this to say: stop, please!

A recent article blamed Facebook’s ability to ruin 54 , saying that it limits communication to typing and encourages people to spend far too much time with friends they have 55 met.

Having used Facebook since its first year, I find these arguments false. The simple truth is that these 56 are only a symptom of using Facebook too much. Like many things, it is only as 57 to your life and relationships as you allow it to be.

Facebook can be helpful. You can use Facebook to find friends

who may have long ago 58 their e-mail addresses and phone numbers. You can find out what your old college friends are up to. You can 59 your friends on their latest birthday. You can also share articles and pictures you find interesting with your friends. A

In 1939 two brothers, Mac and Dick McDonald, started a drive-in restaurant in San Bernadino, California. They carefully chose a busy corner for their location. They had kept their own businesses

for years, first a theater, then a barbecue restaurant, then another drive-in. But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu: French fries, hamburgers, and sodas. To this small selection they added one new idea: quick service, no waiters or waitresses, and no tips.

Their hamburgers sold for fifteen cents. Cheese was another four cents. Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity (一致性), for the brothers had developed a strict usual way for the preparation of their food, and they insisted on their cooks’sticking to their routine. Their new drive-in became surprisingly popular, particularly for lunch. People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime. The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothers had allowed ten copies of their restaurant to be opened. They were content with this modest success until they met Ray Kroc.

Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954, when he was selling milkshake-mixing machines. He quickly saw the special attraction of the brothers’fast-food restaurants and bought the right to franchise (特许经营) other copies of their restaurants. The agreement included the right to duplicate (复制) the menu, the equipment, even their red and white buildings with the golden arches (拱门).

Today McDonald’s is really a household name. In 1976, McDonald’s had over $ l billion in total sales. Its first twenty-two years is one of the most surprising success stories in modern American business history.

61. This passage mainly talks about _______.

A. the development of fast food services

B. how McDonald’s became a billion-dollar business

C. the business careers of Mac and Dick McDonald

D. Ray Kroc’s business talent

62. Mac and Dick managed all of the following businesses except _______.

A. a drive-in

B. a theater

C. a cinema

D. a barbecue restaurant

63. We may infer from this passage that _______.

A. Mac and Dick McDonald never became wealthy for they sold their idea to Kroc.

B. the place the McDonalds chose was the only source of the great popularity of their

drive-in

C. forty years ago there were lots of fast-food restaurants

D. Ray Kroc was a good businessman

64. The passage suggests that _______.

A. creativity is an important element of business success

B. Red and white buildings with the golden arches are essential for good business

C. Mac and Dick McDonald became broken after they sold their ideas to Ray Kroc

D. California is the best place to go into business

B

Back those photos up

The images were striking. Homes on the East Coast were washed away by Superstorm Sandy. People were in tears, picking up faded photographs, among their only remaining possessions.

If that doesn’t move you to get serious about safekeeping your lifetime of memories, what will? The digital age offers tools never imaginable before—including one-click access to a lifetime of family photos.

Here is a brochure on how to back up (存) your photos and save them online, where they can live forever and be accessible in good times and bad.

Scanning

The first step for those old photos is to scan them and save them to a digital format. Most printers come with scanners these days, so that’s an easy but extremely time-consuming step.

Storing the photos

With your scans in place, import the photos into your computer, and back them up.

You could make multiple copies of the disks and spread them to loved ones. Or you could choose external (外接的) hard drives or USB thumb drive, and add your photo and video collection from your computer.

Online backup

If you need lots of space, look at a pure online backup service, Caronite.

Caronite backs up 300 million files daily. Once you sign up, it starts to pick up everything you have on your hard drive. But photo collection on your computer’s main hard drive charges for $59 a year.

Cloud Storage

For folks who don’t need automatic backup, but instead want to take a more active approach, Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft’s SkyDrive let you store files online by yourself, share and instantly access them. All offer free options—2GB of free storage for Dropbox, 5GB for Google and 7GB for SkyDrive. But if you want more, you need to pay.

Bottom Line

The hard drive or flash drive is the cheapest and easiest. But drives can fail. Online services are more expensive, but more secure. With more of us switching back and forth between our computers, such services are the best way to get access to our data from wherever we are.

65. Why does the author mention Superstorm Sandy?

A. To tell the background of the scanning photos. .

B. To attract the readers’interest in the backups.

C. To describe a severe natural disaster.

D. To win the readers’sympathy.

66. What can we know from the passage?

A. Scanning photos takes little time but costs a lot.

B. Google Drive offers unlimited free photo storage on line.

C. Caronite charges for backing up photos from hard drive.

D. The hard drive or flash drive is the cheapest and safest.

67. Which of the following allows storing files automatically?

A. Caronite.

B. Dropbox.

C. SkyDrive.

D. Flash drive.

68. The main purpose of the passage is to _______.

A. tell real stories about storage services

B. introduce some of the storage services

C. describe the functions of storage services

D. argue about the advantage of storage services

C

“If there is one thing I’m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.

The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives —the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic (基因) engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do —as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.

It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted (传送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu,

making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read —sports and international news, etc.

I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media. They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

69. What is the best title for the passage?

A. The Best Way to Get News

B. The Changes of Media

C. Make Your Own Newspaper

D. The Future of Newspaper

70. In the writer’s opinion, in the future, _______.

A. more big political affairs, wars and disasters will make news

B. newspapers will not be printed in publishing houses any longer

C. newspapers will cover more scientific research

D. more and more people will watch TV

71. From the passage, we can infer _______.

A. newspapers will win the competition among the different media

B. newspapers will stay with us together with other media

C. television will take the place of newspaper

D. the writer believe some media will die out

72. The underlined phrase “feed off”in the last paragraph means _______.

A. depend on

B. compete with

C. fight with

D. kill off

D

All around the world, shoppers flock to Wal-Mart to buy everything. In Texas, they come for another reason: to see the wind turbine(涡轮机), which supplies 5% of the store's electricity. It along with other facilities, such as exterior walls coated with

heat-reflective paint, makes this Wal-Mart a green giant.

The laws of economics suggest that Wal-Mart, with 5, 200 stores worldwide, influences everything including the price of all kinds of goods. It throws its weight behind environmental responsibility, and the effects could be amazing."One little change in product packaging could save 1, 500 trees," says Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott."If everybody saves 1, 500 trees or 50 barrels of oil, at the end of the day you have made a huge difference."

Scott wants Wal-Mart to do its part too.He has promised to cut the existing greenhouse-gas emissions(排放)over the next few years and promised to construct new stores that are more efficient. He wants Wal-Mart's fleet(车队)of more than 7, 000 trucks to get twice as many miles per gallon by 2015.Factories that show Wal-Mart

they're cutting air pollution will get preferential treatment in the supply chain.Wal-Mart says it's working with consumer-product manufacturers to reduce their packaging and will reward them if they do so.

Some people may doubt it is a bid to attract attention from

Wal-Mart's controversial labor and health-insurance practices. But it's not just window dressing, because Wal-Mart sees profits in going green.Scott says, "This is a business philosophy, not a social philosophy. We don't go where we don't think there's a great interest in change.”

Like Bill Gates, who started his charitable foundation, Scott happens to be promoting Wal-Mart's image at a time when his company's reputation is declining. He acknowledges that he launched the plan partly to shield(保护,庇护)Wal-Mart from bad press about its contribution to global warming." By doing what

we're doing today, we avoid the headline risks that are going to come for people who did not do anything," he says."At some point businesses will be held responsible for the actions they take." Meanwhile, should Wal-Mart succeed at shrinking its environmental footprint and lowering prices for green products, both the planet and the company will profit.

73. We can infer from the passage that ______.

A. Lee Scott is Wal-Mart's CEO

B. there are 5,200 stores in the world

C. Wal-Mart has a great influence on the world market

D. Wal-Mart has more than 7, 000 trucks all over the world

74. What does the underlined sentence "This is a business philosophy, not a social philosophy." mean in the fourth paragraph?

A. Wal-Mart predicts huge profits in its green activity.

B. Wal-Mart's green activity is just window dressing.

C. Wal-Mart aims to solve its health-insurance practices.

D. Wal-Mart doesn't have any social responsibility at all.

75. What will Wal-Mart probably do in the future?

A. Reduce air pollution in its present stores.

B. Give favorable treatment to its consumers.

C. Ask the factories to reduce their packaging.

D. Demand the fleet of trucks to use more fuel than before.

76. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A. Provide the background of the green plan.

B. Analyze the similarity between Bill Gates and Scott.

C. Present the risk that Wal-Mart is facing nowadays.

D. Stress the purpose of Wal-Mart's green plan.
