During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman who got married at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women get married at a younger age and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work untilretirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children ,her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器)and convenience foods. This important change in women’s way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they got married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to get married young, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Many more return afterwards to a full-time or part-time job. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with both husband and wife accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfaction of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money and running the home, according to the abilities and interest of each of them.21. We are told that in an average family about 1890________.A. many children died before they were fiveB. the youngest child would be fifteen years younger than the oldestC. seven of eight children lived to be more than fiveD. the child death rate was rather high22. Many girls, the passage says, are now likely to ________.A. get married so that they can get a jobB. leave school as soon as they canC. give up their jobs for good after they are marriedD. continue working until they are going to have a baby24. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ________.A. stay at home after leaving schoolB. marry men younger than themselvesC. start working again later in lifeD. get married while still at school25. They were coming from a point in the sky where there was no know star. They were coming very regularly too: about once a second. It was as if they were controlled by a clock. The scientists who heard the signals did not tell anybody else. They were rather afraid to tell in case they frightened people. The signals were coming from a very small body----no bigger, perhaps, than the earth. Was that why no light could be seen from it Or were the signals coming from a planet that belonged to some other star There was no end to the questions, but the scientists kept the news secret. “Perhaps there are intelligent beings out there,” theythought, “who are trying to send messages to other planets, or to us!” So the news was not given to the newspapers. Instead, the scientists studied the signals and searched for others like them…Well, all that happened in 1967 and 1968. Since then scientists have learnt more about those strange, regular, radio signals. And they have told the story, of course. The signals do not come from a planet; they come from a new kind of star called a “pulsar”. About a hundred other pulsars have now been found, and most of them are very like the first one.Pulsars are strong radio stars. They are the smallest but the heaviest stars we know at present. A handful of pulsar would weigh a few thousand tons. Their light----if they give much light----is too small for us to see. But we can be sure of this: no intelligent beings are living on them.26. The radio signals discussed in this passage .A.were regularB.were controlled by a clockC.were heard in 1967 onlyD.were secret messages27. In the United States, it is an annual (每年的) occasion to show thanks to God for his goodness. As a historical, national and religious holiday, Thanksgiving Day began with the English in Plymouth Colony. As far back as 1621, after a long bitter winter and the gathering of the first harvest, these early settlers shared a feast with the local Indians and offered prayers of thanksgiving. President Washington proclaimed (宣布) the first nationalThanksgiving Day to be celebrated on November 26, 1789. Reading ComprehensionPassage OneWhen John and Victoria Falls arrived in New York City for one-year stay, they did not bring very many things with them. They had planned either to live in a furnished apartment or to buy used furniture. But they soon learned about a new system that more and more people are using. The renting of home furnishings (bed, tables, dishes, and so on) has become one of America’s fastest growing businesses. What kinds of people rent their home furnishings instead of buying them? People who are international business or government officials, foreign students, airline workers, young married couple –people whose job or business may force them to move frequently from one city toanother. They save a lot of trouble and the cost of moving their furniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their new homes. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they may soon dislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buy furniture that they really like. Meanwhile, they find they can rent better quality furniture than they could afford to buy.One family, who now have a large, beautiful home of their own, liked their rented furniture so much that they decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things. Custom has also governed the common practice in regard to its use. All the armed services have precise regulations on how to display the national flag. This may vary somewhat from the general rules. The national flag should be raised and lowered by hand. Do not raise the flag while it is folded. Unfolded the flag first, and then hoist it quickly to the top of the flagpole. Lower it slowly and with dignity. Place no objects on or over the flag. Do not use the flag as part of a costume or athletic uniform. Between the hours of 11 a. m. and 4:30 p. m., college television lounges are filled with soap opera fans who can’t wait to see the next episode in the lives of their favorite characters.Actually, soaps are more than a college favorite; they’re a youth favorite. When school is out, high-school students are in front of their TV sets. One young working woman admitted that she turned down a higher paying job rather than give up watching her favorite serials. During the 1960’s, it was uncommon for young people to watch soap operas. The mood of the sixties was very different from now. It was a time of seriousness, and talk was about social issues of great importance. Now, seriousness has been replaced by fun. Young people want to be happy. It may seem strange that they should turn to soap opera, which is known for showing trouble in people’s lives. But soap opera is enjoyment. Young people can identify with the soap opera character, who, like the college-age viewer, is looking for happy love, and probably not finding it. And soap opera gives young people a chance to feel close to people without having to bear any responsibility for their problems.46. What is soap opera? CA. Plays based on science fiction stories.B. Plays based on non-fiction stories.C. The daytime serial dramas on TV.D. Popular documentary films on TV.47. What can be the best title of the passage? CA. College student viewers.B. College students like soap operas more than any other social groups.B. Young people of sixties like soap operas more than people today.C. Young viewers have turned themselves from the seriousness of sixties to enjoyment now.D. The young as a whole are trying to look for happy love but in vain.50. The next day, the following news appeared on page two of the town’s newspaper, The Beldon Post:FIRE AT SEABREEZELate last night firemen hurried to the Seabreeze Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom The hotel manager said that a cigarette sta rted the fire. We say again to all our visitor: “Please don’t smoke cigarettes in bed.” This was Beldon’s first hotel fire in five years. The Canfield Times gave the news in these words on page one:ANOTHER BELDON HOTEL CATCHES FIRELast night Beldon firemen arrived just too late to save clothing, and some furniture at the Seabreeze Hotel. An angry holiday-maker said, “An electric lamp probably started the fire. The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I turned my bedside light on, I h eard a funny noise from the lamp.” We are glad to tell our readers that this sort of adventure does not happen in Canfield. What are the facts, then? During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman who got married at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women get married at a younger age and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children ,her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器)and convenience foods. This important change in women’s way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s ec onomic position. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ________.A. stay at home after leaving schoolB. marry men younger than themselvesC. start working again later in lifeD. get married while still at school25. They were coming from a point in the sky where there was no know star. They were coming veryregularly too: about once a second. It was as if they were controlled bya clock. The scientists who heard the signals did not tell anybody else. They were rather afraid to tell in case they frightened people. Thesignals were coming from a very small body----no bigger, perhaps, than the earth. Was that why no light could be seen from it? Or werethe signals coming from a planet that belonged to some other star? There was no end to the questions, but the scientists kept the news secret. “Perhaps there are intelligent beings out there,” they thought,“who are trying to send messages to other planets, or to us!” So thenews was not given to the newspapers. Instead, the scientists studiedthe s ignals and searched for others like them…Well, all that happened in 1967 and 1968. Since then scientists have learnt more about those strange, regular, radio signals. And theyhave told the story, of course. The signals do not come from a planet;they com e from a new kind of star called a “pulsar”. About a hundredother pulsars have now been found, and most of them are very like thefirst one.Pulsars are strong radio stars. They are the smallest but the heaviest stars we know at present. A handful of pulsar would weigh afew thousand tons. Their light----if they give much light----is too smallfor us to see. But we can be sure of this: no intelligent beings are living on them.26. President Washington proclaimed (宣布) the first national Thanksgiving Day to be celebrated on November 26, 1789. President Lincoln revived the custom in 1863.It was not until 1941 that the US Congress adopted a resolution, setting the fourth Thursday of November as an annual Thanksgiving Day. The book The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin is probably one of the most famous books ever written by a scientist. Yet it is a book which the writer did not want to publish; he only agreed to make his theory known to the public when he was forced to by his friends. In 1831, the British Government sent a ship called Beagle to South America to make maps of the coast. At that time, Darwin w as a young man in his twenties who had studied science in Edinburgh and Cambridge. Through a friend, he was offered the job of studying the plants and animals of the different countries that the Beagle was to visit. Darwin’s father told him not to go, an d the captain of the Beagle said that he did not like the shape of Darwin’s nose; but that did not stop him, and in December of that year, Darwin sailed for South America. He spent five years on the ship, collecting many samples and writing down his obs ervations about the living things he found. When he returned to England, he tried to work out a theory to explain what he had observed. It was clear that many species w ere connected with each other in some way, without being exactly the same. Why was this? Two years after his return, he deve loped a theory: only the strongest or the cleverest could survive difficult conditions. Over time, the species changes slowly to fi t the environment. Different environments produce different species.(17.5分)
