Disney.Johannes Fritz, an Austrian biologist, needed to come up with a plan again if he was going to prevent his rare and beloved birds from going extinct. To survive the European winter, the northern bald ibis needs to migrate south for the winter over the Alps. But shifting climate patterns have delayed when the birds begin to migrate and they are now reaching the mountains too late to make it over the peaks, locking them in an icy death trap. Determined to save them, he decided to teach the birds a new, safer migration route by guiding them himself in a tiny aircraft. He was confident that he could succeed in this daring, unconventional plan.the last in the wild, causing the birds to disappear entirely from the wild. When Mr. Fritz was born 56 years ago, the northern bald ibis could be found in Europe only in captivity (圈养) .Mr.Fritz has spent his career reintroducing the birds into the wild. Through years of trial and error, he learned to fly like a bird. He modified (改装) a lightweight aircraft so it would fly at speeds slow enough for the birds to keep up. In 2004, he led the first flock from Austria to Italy, and has since led more migrations. But the route he originally taught the ibises does not work successfully. With climate change warming the area where the birds summer, they now start their migration at the end of October instead of the end of September. The trip is expected to take about six weeks, “Still, we’re optimistic that it’ll work,” said Mr. Fritz. His family and colleagues witnessed the risks he was taking. “But the unavoidable risks are necessary,” Mr. Fritz said. “It’s not so much a job, but my life’s purpose.”4.What was Johannes Fritz’s plan?A. To shorten bald ibises’ migration route.B. To lead bald ibises to migrate on a new route.C. To better the climate patterns for bald ibises.D. To find out a safer destination for bald ibises.5.What does the underlined word “devoured” in paragra ph 3 mean?A. Destroyed.B. Abused.C. Released.D. Raised.6.Why was Mr. Fritz’s initial route for the birds ineffective?A. Owing to the long time it consumes.B. For the slow speed of his modified aircraft.C. Because of the toughness along the first route.D. Due to higher temperatures in the summer habitat.7.Which of the following can best describe Mr. Fritz?A. Honest.B. Innovative.C. Straightforward.D. Demanding. As you’re drafting your New Year’s resolutions, you may think that it takes 21 days of repeating an action for that action to become a habit. So, you set out to go to the gym for 21 days, thinking that by day 22 heading to the gym will feel automatic—maybe even fun. However, that 21-day estimate isn’t true. A habit expert Wendy Wood found that this falsehood came from a self-help book in the 1960s and actually described how long it takes to get used to your new appearance after plastic surgery. It’s important to note t hat getting used to something is not the same thing as forming a habit, and perhaps the two concepts got confused along the way, giving rise to the term today. To figure out how long it actually takes to form a habit, Phillippa Lally, and her team did a series of research. They recruited 96 people and asked each person to choose one new habit and report each day on whether or not they did the behavior and how automatic the behavior felt. Some people chose simple habits like “drinking a bottle of water with lunch.” Others chose m ore difficult tasks like “running for 15 minutes before dinner.” At the end of 12 weeks, the researchers analyzed the data to determine how long it took each person to go from starting a new behavior to automatically doing it.The study found that it takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes automatic—66 days to be exact. And if you want to set your expectations appropriately, the truth is that it will probably take you anywhere from two months to eight months to build a new behavior into your life. Interestingly, the researchers also found that “m issing one opportunity to perform the behavior did not affect the habit formation process.” That is to say, it doesn’t matter if you mess up every now and then. Building better habits is not an all-or-nothing process. So, for those who wish to form certain habits, persistence is king. To form a good habit, we need to pay more energy and effort.8.What does “21days” actually mean according to Wendy Wood?A. The time one drafts a book.B. The time one develops a new habit.C. The time one gets used to something.D. The time one recovers from a surgery. 9.How did the researchers do the research?A. By doing questionnaires.B. By tracking people’s behaviors.C. By making predictions.D. By analyzing data of previous studies. 10.What can we infer from paragraph 5?A. Habits cannot be noticed easily.B. The amount of time a habit takes varies.C. One should perform a behavior constantly.D. It takes exactly 66 days to form a new habit.11.What is the best title of the passage?A. Habit—good or not?B. Better habit, better life?C. 21days to form a habit?D. Hit or miss with habits? The house had been cleaned and decorated elegantly. The air smelt fresh. Little labels on all we saw around the house displayed important details: date of purchase and the current selling price. We were at a garage sale. There was no talking or bargaining. Buyers could pick up at the listed price. All efforts that release cash that is locked into stuff touch me deeply. If they break conventional ideas, I will like them even more. It is my view that people love to follow suit and end up with emotions they ought to feel, rather than being true to themselves. To say that one does not care for one’s grandmother’s necklace is considered rude, so one would simply keep it in the locker and pass it on to the next generation. No longer so, I am guessing. It’s not always about money, but perhaps about considering one’s choices. My argument always is to use stuff, if you like it so much. Wear those pieces of jewellery; use those pieces of furnitures; take home those piles of old-time bedsheets. But if none of them fit into your current home, allow someone else to take them home. Turn those properties over instead of leaving them unused.Hoarding (囤积) is not a virtue. It is a waste of the money that is locked into the property you are hoarding. I may use it sometime in the future, say some. Give that a time frame. If you are holding something you haven’t used even once in five years, ask yourself if someone else may need it. Don’t sell if you don’t care for money; but do give it away. All else needs to earn their place for their value and usefulness for you. Celebrate the liberation from hoarding and let there be light!12.What do people often do at the garage sale?A. Purchase a garage.B. Label their belongings.C. Talk about decoration.D. Trade their unused stuff.13.Why does the author mention “neeklace” in par agraph 2?A. To call for respect towards the elderly.B. To advocate holding onto the family tradition.C. To show the financial condition of an average family.D. To prove people tend to follow suit against their wills.14.What does the author believe according to paragraph 4?A. It is a good idea to save money.B. A good taste counts in purchase.C. Unused items deserve a new owner.D. The outdated should be thrown away.15.What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?A. To call on people to get rid of hoarding.B. To show his worry about wasting resources.C. To draw attention to conserving the traditions.D. To inspire people to spend more on meaningful things.二、七选五16.In our ever-evolving world, where both personal and professional areas are loaded with challenges, problem solving skills are increasingly valuable in the workplace. ①Here’s how to enhance your strategy.Clear and brief communication is the key to effective problem-solving, acting as the bridge that connects diverse perspectives toward a common goal. ② It involves choosing the right words, structuring information logically, and being mindful of the audience to ensure that your message is both impressive and comprehensible. Her parents, Eric and Valerie Castillo, said she is likely the youngest person to reach that milestone. The family, from San Antonio, Texas, ended their travels with a trip to Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska. “Mission complete,” they wrote on Instagram. “After three years of adventure, countless logistics work and not giving up, we could not be more proud to share the conclusion of our quest.” Journey hasn’t been officially verified as the youngest traveler to visit all 63 parks. But more important than the title, her parents say, is the experience.“Our thing was: ‘Let’s… inspire in Journey a passion for nature, inspire in her that she can handle the strenuous parts of the traveling: the environments, the weather changes, different cultures.” Valerie Castillo told The Guardian’s Ramon Antonio Vargas. Before she could walk, Journey Castillo’s parents set out to visit every national park in the U.S. They hiked up Pikes Peak and explored Rocky Mountain National Park, all with an infant in tow. As far as they could tell, Journey seemed to enjoy herself.“We could see her little eyes open and take it all in,” Valerie Castillo told the San Antonio Express-News last year. “She was so aware, even being a few days old. She’s adapted so well.”They then ventured to Grand Canyon National Park — and decided to keep going. They set a goal of visiting 21 parks by Journey’s first birthday, then 42 parks by her second birthday. Eventually, they decided to go for all 63 parks. The family has been documenting every step of the way on Instagram and their website, Journey Go Explore.Reaching the last few parks on their list — all in Alaska — required lots of logistical management, including renting flights, ferry rides, and even special permission from theNational Park Service to visit a seasonally closed park. Though their visit was challenging at times, the Castillos say it helped their daughter develop confidence. Journey walks fearlessly through airports and happily greets park rangers. “When she’s out at these parks, she comes to life, and her personality brightens up,” Eric Castillo said.4.Why did Journey Castillo’s parents take her to visit all America’s national parks?A.To inspire others to be more active.B.To document their travels on Instagram.C.To inspire a passion for nature in Journey.D.To break a record as the youngest traveler.5.What does the underlined word “strenuous” probably mean in the third paragraph?A.identical B.appealing C.mild D.challenging 6.What did the parents perceive about Journey during their visits to national parks?A.She was uninterested in the surroundings.B.She adapted well and seemed to enjoy herself.C.She preferred staying indoors with her parents.D.She only enjoyed specific environments and attractions.7.How did Eric Castillo describe Journey’s personality during those travels?A.Shy and introverted.B.Reliable and anxious.C.Fearful and splendid.D.Enthusiastic and confident.“Don’t be a victim.” That’s a phrase you’ll hear a lot if you take a crime-prevention class. Basically, it means that there are steps you can take to reduce the likelihood that you’ll be mugged, assaulted, or otherwise attacked. Don’t wave your cash around like you’re a billionaire. Don’t be distracted on the subway. Walk with a purpose. That last one is particularly important, because according to a new study from the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, some criminals are very good at sensing weakness based on the way you walk. Actually, serial killer Ted Bundy admitted in a personal interview in 1985 that “he could tell a victim by the way she walked down the street, the tilt of her head, the manner in which she carried herself, etc…” Unfortunately, research demonstrated the reality that criminals do in fact look for, or at least notice certain characters when selecting potential victims. While nothing excuses crime, knowledge is power in the sense that there are things we can do to protect ourselves when we are out alone. In the report titled “Psychopathy and Victim Selection” the researchers surveyed 47 criminals at a maximum-security prison in Ontario and found that social predators are very good at picking victims based on their posture and gait(步伐). They noted that people might be releasing vulnerability to criminals through their postures, gestures, and exaggerated movements. The researchers secretly filmed 12 people walking — eight women and four men, some of whom had been attacked before. Then, they showed the video to a group of criminals and asked them whether or not each person would make a good victim. These “victim ratings” were then compared against each person’s actual history of victimization. Sure enough, the people whom the criminals picked as “likely victims” were usually the ones who had been victimized in the past. These people were often said to have “walked like an easy target” — slowly, unfocused, with short steps. The sample size here is really small. Maybe we shouldn’t give this study’s findings too much weight. Nevertheless, it emphasizes something that seems pretty unconscious. Criminals aren’t looking for a challenge. Rather, they want someone timid and inattentive. So stride down the street like you own it. Your new, aggressive gait may scare off criminals. And even if this study turns out to be total bullshit, you’ll still get where you’re going a lot faster. 8.Why does the author mention the serial killer Ted Bundy?A.To call on more people to learn psychology.B.To prove that someone can be a natural criminal.C.To demonstrate some skills to distinguish criminals.D.To emphasize the importance of the right walking habit.9.How did the researchers conduct their research on victim selection?A.By analyzing crime data in various neighborhoods.B.By filming people walking and getting criminals’ opinions.C.By filming criminals as they selected their potential victims.D.By studying the psychology of crime victims in a maximum-security prison. 10.According to the research which gait will most attract criminals’ attention?A.Distracted walking with short steps.B.Purposeful walking with slow steps.C.Walking with a group of people cheerfully.D.Walking with confident and exaggerated movements.11.What’s the author’s attitude toward walking confidently and aggressively?A.Favorable.B.Doubtful.C.Disapproving.D.Indifferent.I am neither Jewish nor Palestinian, and none of my six regular jobs have anything to do with foreign policy, but the other day I opened Twitter (now called X) after some time offline, only to find people I don’t know demanding that I make a public statement about what’s happening in the Middle East. It seemed that most of the people on social media had made a statement, including various well-known brands, celebrities and lifestyle influencers.I saw lots of random citizens being told that if they didn’t speak out, they, too, would have blood on their hands. Taking a stand on social media instantly will win wild applause but reduces complex issues to a simple yes or no.Those social media posts without serious thinking are not what bother me most, though. Instead, it’s the idea that not posting is wrong — that everyone needs to speak, all the time. It discourages shutting up and listening and letting the voices that matter the most be heard over the noise. It implies it’s not OK to have any uncertainty about what’s going on. It does not leave time or space for people to process disturbing events in their own minds or to gather more information before pronouncing a judgment. It pressures people who don’t have an opinion yet or are working out what they think to produce one opinion immediately and present it to an audience of total strangers on the Internet who will quickly judge whether it’s appropriate or not.“Nothing pays off like self-control of tongue and pen,” writes A.A.’s co-founder Bill Wilson. “We must avoid quick-tempered criticism and extreme anger,” which he calls “emotional idiot got trapped by pride and revenge.” While I’ve regretted posting half-formed thoughts too quickly, I’ve never regretted waiting until I was less angry or not posting at all. 12.Why does the author mention his/her race and jobs in the first paragraph?A.To reflect the author’s professional research background.B.To introduce the topic of the widespread use of social media.C.To discuss the impact of social media violating personal privacy.D.To express dissatisfaction with commenting on something without personal ties. 13.What bothered the author most about social media posts?A.Pressure to take a stand.B.Shutting up and listening.C.Lack of diversity in opinions.D.Complex issues reduced to yes or no.14.What can we infer based on what Bill Wilson said?A.Avoiding creating argument is a virtue.B.Quick-tempered criticism is rewarding.C.Producing immediate opinion is an ability.D.Control of what you say and write is beneficial.15.Which would be the best title for this text?A.“Speak Out for the Disadvantages in a Social Media Age”B.“I Don’t Have To Post About My Anger, Neither Do You”C.“Silence Is Golden: A Guide to Ignoring World Issues Like a Pro”D.“Keep Angry, Keep Reasonable: Avoiding the Mess on Social Media”How to Have Open CommunicationWhen you can communicate openly, you can start improving your relationships, both personal and professional, in a number of ways. 16 There are a few things that you can do when you have an open conversation.17 Be mindful of where and when you need to have a discussion with someone, especially if you are having an important disagreement. Someone is not likely to be open when communicating if you are surrounded by family or out in public. Therefore, have a discussion when it’s more convenient for both you and your partner.Have patience. When emotions are high, it can be easy to be swept in those feelings and want to get all your points across. But this can make communication more difficult because you are so focused on your feelings that you aren’t able to focus on what you need to say. Be patient and allow for silences that happen. 18Take the time to listen to what the other person is saying. 19 This allows you to see if there is any misunderstanding and allows you the time to understand his words accurately. You don’t need to agree on all his words, but it is important to understand where they’re coming from.Be honest with your thoughts and your feelings. Sometimes we feel the need to soften our words to lessen the blow. 20 After all, when we leave out certain details, we’re not able to communicate openly. You need to be honest with your partner about your needsand your experiences. By doing so, you’re hopefully closer to being able to tackle the issue.A.Wait for the appropriate time and place.B.Discuss what you need to communicate openly.C.Bring something positive into your communication.D.This could be because we don’t want to hurt the other person.E.Ask questions if you need to and even repeat what he has said.F.Open communication increases trust and helps bridge differences.G.Sometimes you need time to think and accurately express yourself.二、完形填空Krista Sheneman was diagnosed with diabetes (糖尿病) around five years ago. This trend is formed by many factors. One factor is the understanding that swimming is an important life skill, much like writing or cooking. A person without swimming skills risks losing his life in a situation where the ship he is traveling in happens to sink and he has to swim to the shore. Of course, not everyone chooses to travel in vessels(船只).But sometimes travel in vessels is inevitable, such as in a city where the only way to cross from one part to another is by boat. There is also the risk of a bus falling off a bridge into a river, where the only way to save one’s life is by swimming.Another factor in the decision to incorporate swimming skills into school courses is that swimming is a good way of exercising. Now many countries in the developed world are struggling with the problem of people being overweight, and any activity that can help in fighting this problem should be encouraged. The third factor is that swimming is a great activity because once a person gets a feel of it, they tend to get hooked on to it. So it is not a “painful”form of exercise, but something one does for fun, while at the same time keeping fit.The decision to incorporate swimming into school courses is also influenced by the understanding that activities like swimming are best learned when a person is young , and that between 8 and 12 years is a good time to learn it. Of course, it is even better for a child to learn swimming at an earlier age, though swimming is not encouraged for children under the age of 4.51.According to the author , more and more governments______.A.are encouraging teachers to swim with their childrenB.are requiring students to swim after schoolC.are encouraging schools to attach more importance to swimmingD.are planning to test their students on swimming52.The underlined word “inevitable”in Paragraph 2 probably means “_______”.A.not being solvedB.dangerous or worryingC.interesting or meaningfulD.sure to happen53.How many factors that influenced the decision to make swimming a school course are mentioned in the passage?A.Two.B.Three.C.Four.D.Five.54.What is the best age for a child to learn swim according to the passage?A.At the age of 3.B.Between 4 and 8.C.Between 8 and 12.D.After the age of 14.BIn the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbours. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours. It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way if life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr Jones always seems to be ahead.55.Some people want to keep up with the Joneses bacause they _______.A.want to be as rich as their neigboursB.want others to know or to think that they are richC.don’t want others to know they are richD.want to be happy56.It can be inferred from the story that rich people like to _______.A.live outside New York CityB.live in New York cityC.live in apartmentsD.have many neighbours57.Arthur Momand used the name “Jones” in his series of short stories because “Jones” is ______.A.an important nameB.a popular name in the United StatesC.his neighbour’s nameD.not a good name58.According to the writer, it is _______ to keep up with the Joneses.A.correctB.interestingC.impossibleD.goodCReal Christmas trees on farms would not exist if people stopped buying them. Just one acre of growing Christmas trees produces the daily oxygen requirements for at least eighteen people.Christmas tree farms protect water supplies, stabilize soil, and help protect wildlife. The forests of North America spread over roughly the same area of land as they did a century ago and in the past ten years have in fact expanded by almost ten million acres. Furthermore, to guarantee a steady supply, one to three new seedlings are planted for every tree they harvest. With global warming being such a major concern, developing woodlands is an essential part of the fight. While potted trees are a better alternative than artificial, they require a certain amount of care. Bur it would be a better choice than a plastic tree which will remain under the ground for centuries once it’s discarded. On average, it takes a Christmas tree five to sixteen years to become mature. Before the Christmas tree industry appeared, people used to cut trees from forests, sometimes unlawfully, and usually with no concern for the possible harm to the forest. But today, Christmas tree growers plant as many as fifty million trees per year.Several districts have recycling programs that turn Christmas trees into mulch(覆盖物).For a small fee, the Boy Scouts will deal with it. Fake Christmas trees can’t be recycled, while real Christmas trees support life. We shouldn’t add more pollution to our earth. If you know a needy family in need of a Christmas tree, buy them a real one. Give a live Christmas tree to someone this Christmas and what you do will help protect the environment.59.The underlined word “discarded”(in Paragraph3) can be replaced by _______.A.plantedB.movedC.transportedD.deserted60.According to the passage, real Christmas trees _______.A.can’t be recycledB.need much careC.will stay under the groundD.make the global warming worse61.We may infer from the passage that the Boy Scouts will _______.A.buy artificial Christmas treesB.sell real Christmas treesC.make artificial Christmas treesD.recycle real Christmas trees62.The purpose of the passage is to call on people to _______.A.plant real Christmas treesB.stop cutting down Christmas treesC.stop buying fake Christmas treesD.deal with plastic Christmas treesDEmily Elizabeth Dickinson was born on December 10,1830 in the quiet community of Amherst, Massachusetts, the second daughter of Edward and Emily Norcross Dickinson. Emily, Austin (her elder brother) and her younger sister Lavinia were raised in a quiet, reserved family headed by their authoritative father Edward. Throughout Emily’s life, her mother was not “emotionally accessible”, the absence of which might have caused some of Emily’s strange behaviors. The Dickinson family was famous in Amherst. Unlike her father, Emily did not enjoy the popularity and excitement of public life in Amherst, and she began to withdraw. Emily did not fit in with her father’s religion in Amherst, and her father began to monitor the books she read because of their potential to draw her away from the faith.Emily had a good education and attended the Amherst Academy. Although Emily nevermarried, she had several important relationships with a select few. In her early twenties, Emily began to write poetry seriously. Fortunately, Emily met two very influential men that would be sources of inspiration and guidance: Charles Wadsworth and Thomas Wentworth Higginson. Charles Wadsworth, aged 41, had a powerful effect on Emily’s life and her poetry. On her trip to Philadelphia, Emily met Wadsworth, who was to become her “dearest earthly friend”. Wadsworth, like Dickinson, was a solitary(喜欢独处的),romantic person that Emily could trust in when writing her poetry. Most importantly, it is widely believed that Emily had a great love for Wadsworth even though he was married. On April 15,1862 she met Thomas Wentworth Higginson, a famous literary man and sent four poems to ask for his advice about publication. Although Higginson advised Dickinson against publishing her poetry, he did see the creative talent in her poetry. As a result, only seven of her poems were published in her lifetime. On May 15,1886 Emily took her last breath at 56, leaving behind nearly 2,000 poems.63.According to Paragraph 1 , Emily Dickinson________.A.had at least three sistersB.was the second child in the familyC.was born in a rich familyD.had an authoritative mother64.Who might be reaponsible for Emily’s strange behaviors according to the passage?A.Edward Dickinson.B.Emily Norcross Dickinson.C.Austin Dickinson.vinia Dickinson65.Why did Emily probably regard Wadsworth as her best friend?A.Because Wadsworth guided Emily how to write poems.B.Because Wadsworth was more influential than Higginson.C.Because Wadsworth was the first poet Emily met on her trip.D.Because Emily and Wadsworth had much in common.66.It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A.Emily died from anger by not publishing her poemsB.the rest of Emily’s poems were of little valueC.most of Emily’s poems weren’t widely circulated before her deathD.Higginson was jealous of Emily’s creative talentERobots that can make their own decisions have so far been limited to science fiction movies, but a child-sized figure with big eyes and a white face is trying hard to turn fiction into reality. Its name is iCub and scientists are hoping it will learn how to adapt its behavior to changing situations, offering new ideas into the development of human consciousness.Six types of iCub exist in laboratories across Europe, where scientists are painstakingly improving their electronic brains to make them able to learn, just like human children. “Our goal is to make them really understand something that is very human: the ability to co-work with humans, to understand what somebody else wants them to do, to be able to follow humans and work with them ,” said research director, Peter Ford Dominey.iCub is about one meter high, with a clear body and arms and legs made up of complicated electronic circuits(电路).It has a white face with a nose and big round eyes that can see and follow moving objects. “Shall we play the old game or play a new one ?” iCub asked Dominey during a recent experiment at a laboratory in Lyon in southeastern France. Its voice was robotic, unsurprisingly, though it did have the tone of a person asking a question. The “game” consisted of one person picking up a box, revealing a toy that was placed underneath .
