Intensive Reading
Para. 1
On Wednesday morning, at a quarter past five, there was an earthquake. A minute later, fires broke out everywhere. There was no organization, no communication. This very modern city was all of a sudden in ruins, with the streets destroyed and forming great depressions in the earth, the telephone lines falling every way, and the water mains pouring out all over the place. The city seemed to have been wiped out by this random act of nature.

Para. 6-7
I remember I complained about the truck, but I don't remember you ever complaining when you came home tired from work and I asked you for money to go on the road again. If you did complain, I guess I didn't hear you. I was too wrapped up in my problems to think of yours.
Para. 2-3
My Darling Wife, This is a letter that no man ever wants to write, but
I'm lucky enough to have some time to say what I've forgotten to say so many t do we know about the driver’s life? She’s a beautiful, diligent and tender-hearted woman.

Intensive Reading: Para. 1-2
Room for the Future
At the age of forty-five, my usually well-ordered life was filled with changes. After twenty-two years of working for a major bank, a downsizing wave resulted in the elimination of over one hundred jobs, mine being one of them.
Para. 6
Oral presentations were often required for one class. I remember thinking that if I had known this beforehand, I would have taken something else to achieve my required credits. By nature, I am a rather reserved individual, and speaking in front of people terrified me. As I stood in front of the other adults with whom I shared a common goal, my knees were visibly knocking, and my heartbeat almost audible. Somehow, I found my voice and made my presentation with effort. The next time it was easier, and soon, I was starting to enjoy it a little. Later in the year, I even interviewed a local reporter for an English assignment, much to the amazement of my teacher. My confidence level rose. Suddenly I felt like I could accomplish anything.

Use Proper Body Language
Para. 1&2
ties and collars straight, and attention paid to hair and
teeth. Whether you're trying to win an election, addressing
the family at a funeral, talking business at a conference,
or giving a seminar at school, there are several key things to remember when speaking to people.
Para. 3&4
The Way You Stand How you hold yourself is very important, especially to the delivery of a good speech. Stand up straight and keep your head up. Leaning against a column or dropping your head is a defense mechanism we all might be tempted to use when we're uncomfortable. However, these things look unprofessional and may prevent your audience from hearing you clearly. On the other hand, don't stand like a guard on duty; you have to be able to move in a natural way in order to add expression to your words. Body language "says" a lot. Can you imagine, for instance, a diplomat speaking in front of the members of an embassy and not making one single movement at all? No movement can sometimes be worse than too much!

They are psychologist and geneticist respectively. 3. In the twin study mentioned in the text, what were the
results about the identical twins?
The identical twins were quite similar in rating their happiness or despair.
Chinese
Para. 4
In the first study, David Brown and George Yule-a psychologist and a geneticist, respectively-tried to measure happiness in 1,500 sets of twins, half of which were identical. The researchers used a survey, with true-false statements such as "I am just naturally cheerful" and "My future looks bright to me". Upon receipt of the completed surveys, it became clear that the responses, or happiness scores, of the twins who were not identical, were almost no different than the responses of unrelated pairs of people. The identical twins, however, were quite similar in rating their happiness or despair. Since identical twins have genes that are complete copies of one another, the researchers believed this revealed a physical link to happiness.

Summary of the clips and reference for discussion
This ad is about a type of SIEMENS mobile phone. This type of mobile phone has combined the functions of mobile phones and digital cameras. It can transmit the video message to the mobile phone holder wherever he/she is. The mobile phone has helped to make the marriage proposal even more romantic. Suppose you were the girl in the ad, could you refuse the romantic proposal? Were you a fashionable person, could you resist the temptation of such a stylish mobile phone? If your answer is no, then the ad works.
