Honorable Judges, fello students:

The nis sa the ollege students are the pampered lost generation, hih ould ringe at the slightest disfort. But the nis are rong. The ollege students I see are eagerl learning about ho to live independentl. We help eah other lean the dormitor, go shopping and bargain together, and take part

time jobs to supplement our poket mone.

The nis sa e are for nothing other than grades; and e neglet the need for harater ultivation. But again,

the nis are rong. We are deepl for eah other, e herish freedom, e treasure justie, and e seek truth. Last eek, thousands of m fello students had their blood tpe tested in

order to make a ontribution for the hildren ho suffer from blood aner.

As ollege students, e are adolesents at the ritial

Fault, famil, friends, and fello graduates, good evening.

I am honored to address ou tonight. On behalf of the graduating masters and dotoral students of Washington Universit s Shool of Engineering and Applied Siene, I ould like to thank all the parents, spouses, families, and friends ho enouraged and supported us as e orked toards our graduate degrees. I ould espeiall like to thank m on famil, eight members of hih are in the audiene toda. I ould also like to thank all of the department seretaries and other engineering shool staff members ho alas seemed to be there hen onfused graduate students needed help. And finall I ould like to thank the Washington Universit fault members ho served as our instrutors, mentors, and friends.

As I think bak on the seven-and-a-half ears I spent at Washington Universit, m mind is filled ith memories, happ, sad, frustrating, and even humorous.

Tonight I ould like to share ith ou some of the memories that I take ith me as I leave Washington Universit.

I take ith me the memor of m offie on the fourth floor of Lopata Hall - the room at the end of the halla that as too hot in summer, too old in inter, and alas too far ** from the omen s restroom. The indo as m offie s best feature. Were it not for the phsis building aross the a, it ould have afforded me a lear vie of the arh. But instead I got a vie of the roof of the phsis building. I also had a vie of one orner of the

roof of Urbauer Hall, hih seemed to be a favorite perh for various speies of birds ho alternatel on perhing rights for several eeks at a time. And I had a nie vie of the phsis ourtard, noteorth as a good plae for athing people run their dogs. It s amazing ho fasinating these vies beame the longer

I orked on m dissertation. But m favorite vie as of a nearb oak tree. From m fourth-floor vantage point I had a rather intimate vie of the tree and the various birds and squirrels that inhabit it. Oasionall a bird ould land on m in

do sill, hih usuall had the effet of startling both of us.

I take ith me the memor of to oung professors ho passed

** hile I as a graduate student. Anne Johnstone, the onl female professor from hom I took a ourse in the engineering shool, and Bob Durr, a politial siene professor and a member

of m dissertation mittee, both lost brave battles ith aner. I remember them fondl.

I take ith me the memor of failing the first exam in one

of the first engineering ourses I took as an undergraduate. I remember thinking the ourse as just too hard for me and that

I ould never be able to pass it. So I ent to talk to the professor, read to drop the lass. And he told me not to give up, he told me I ould sueed in his lass. For reasons that seemed pletel ludirous at the time, he said he had faith in me. And after that m grades in the lass slol improved, and I

ended the semester ith an A on the final exam. I remember ho motivational it as to kno that someone believed in me.

I take ith me memories of the midestern friendliness that so surprised me hen I arrived in St. Louis 8 ears ago. Sine moving to Ne Jerse, I am sad to sa, nobod has asked me here I ent to high shool.

I take ith me the memor of the short-lived puter siene graduate student soial mittee lunhes. The idea as that groups of CS grad students ere supposed to take turns ooking a

monthl lunh. But after one grad student prepared a pot of

hiken that poisoned almost the entire CS grad student population and one unluk fault member in one fell soop, there asn t muh enthusiasm for having more lunhes.

I take ith me the memor of a more suessful graduate student effort, the establishment of the Assoiation of Graduate Engineering Students, knon as AGES. Started b a handful of engineering graduate students beause e needed a a

to elet representatives to a ampus-ide graduate student government, AGES soon gre into an organization that no sponsors a ide variet of ativities and has been instrumental

in addressing a number of engineering graduate student onerns.

I take ith me the memor of an Engineering and Poli department that one had flourishing programs for full-time undergraduate, masters, and dotoral students.

I take ith me memories of the92 U.S. Presidential debate. Eager to get involved in all the exitement I volunteered to help herever needed. I remember spending several das in the makeshift debate HQ giving out-of-ton reporters diretions to the athleti plex. I remember being thrilled to get assigned the job of olleting film from the photographers in the debate hall during the debate. And I remember the disappointment of draing the shortest stra among the student volunteers and being the one ho had to take the film out of the debate hall and don to the dark room five minutes into the debate - ith no hane to re-enter the debate hall after I left.

I take ith me memories of universit holidas hih never seemed to appl to graduate students. I remember spending man a fall break and President s Da holida ith m fello grad students in all da meetings brought to us b the puter siene department.

I take ith me memories of exams that seemed designed more to test endurane and perseverane than master of the subjet matter. I managed to esape taking an lasses that featured infamous 24-hour-take-home exams, but remember the suffering of m less fortunate olleagues. And hat dotoral student ould forget the pain and suffering one must endure to survive the qualifing exams? I take ith me the memor of the seven-minute

rule, hih alas seemed to be an aeptable exuse for being ten minutes latefor anthing on ampus, but hih doesn t seem to

appl anhere else I go.

I take ith me the memor of Frida afternoon ACM happ hours, knon not for kegs of beer, but rather bols of rainbo sherbet punh. Over the several ears that I attended these happ hours the enjoed varing degrees of popularit, often proportional to the qualit and quantit of the apaning refreshments - but

there as alas the rainbo sherbert punh.

I take ith me memories of purple parking permits, the

West Campus shuttle, heking m pendaflex, over-due librar books, tring to print from e, lunhes on Delmar, friends ho slept in their offies, miniature golf in Lopata Hall, The Greena Talk, division III basketball, and tring to onvine

Dean Russel that et another engineering shool rule should be hanged.

Finall, I ould like to onlude, not ith a memor, but ith some advie. What ould a graduation speeh be ithout a little advie, right? Ana, this advie es in the form of a verse delivered to the77 graduating lass of Lake Forest College b Theodore Seuss Geisel, better knon to the orld as Dr. Seuss - Here s ho it goes:

M unle ordered popoversfrom the restaurant s bill of fare. And hen the ere served,he regarded them ith a penetrating

stare . . .

Then he spoke great Words of Wisdom as he sat there on

that hair:

To eat these things,

said m unle,

ou must exerise great are.

You ma sallo don hat s solid . . . BUT . . .

ou must spit out the air!

And . . .

as ou partake of the orld s bill of fare, that s darned good advie to follo. Do a lot of spitting out the hot air.

They experience great difficulties finding satisfactory jobs. What is the cause of this phenomenon In my opinion, there are four causes: First, graduates lack experience. They spend most of their time at school studying academic subjects and lack relevant job training. Only after graduation do they realize it's hard to find jobs. Second, competition among graduates grows more bitter and more bitter and bitter. The supply of university graduates exceeds social demand. This results in a decreased chance for any individual graduate to find a job. Third, some students don't study hard. Some of them skip classes just because they have no interest in certain subjects. Some play computer games or pursue other interests. Some sleep in class or in the library. Then they leave the sheltered environment of the university
