Unit 8 Coping with an Educational Problem
Part I Pre-reading Task Listen to the recording two or three times and then think over the following questions: 1. What was the teacher's purpose in asking his class the riddle? 2. What can you learn about Little Geoffrey from his answer to the riddle? Was he used to trying to think clearly? Had he formed the habit of making good use of his brain? 3. Is the story related to the theme of the unit — coping with an educational problem? In what way?
To drive this message home to such young Americans, I have a humble suggestion: a movie, or TV series, dramatizing just how difficult it was for this country to get where it is — and how easily it could all be lost. I offer the following fable. As the story opens, our hero, Kevin Hanley 1990, a 17-year-old high school senior, is sitting in his room, feeling bitter. His parents insist he study for his European history test. He wants to go shopping for headphones for his portable CD player. The book he is forced to read — The Wealth of Nations — puts him to sleep. Kevin dreams it is 1835, and he is his own great-great-great-grandfather at 17, a peasant in County Kerry, Ireland. He lives in a small hut and sleeps next to a pig. He is always hungry and must search for food. His greatest wish is to learn to read and write so he might get a job as a clerk. With steady wages, he would be able to feed himself and help his family. But Hanley's poverty allows no leisure for such luxuries as going to school. Without education and money, he is powerless. His only hope lies in his children. If they are educated, they will have a better life.

Author’s suggestions1) Leave room for differences and not prescribe a standard for everyone.2) Don’t focus on skills in isolation.3) Feel free to innovate without fear of being punished.2.1) F2) F3) T4) T5) F6) T7) F8) TReading and Discussing3.For reference1) From Hans Zimmer’s story, we know that developing creativity needs the joint efforts of schools, teachers, and students. Schools should build a free environment and offer support for teachers and students to implement their ideas. Teachers should teach according to students’ aptitude and pay attention to students’ true needs. Students should figure out what their interests are and try to realize what they really want to do.2) I believe that creativity is not a state of being, but, rather, is a personal characteristic on a continuum from low to high. You can move your creativity up the scale by nurturing it. Furthermore, creative activity isn’t only the creation of art. Everyone who has ever found a solution to a problem has employed creativity. Most of the time, these efforts don’t require high levels of creativity. People high on the continuum of creativity have learned to take an active role in developing it by constantly finding out problems for further exploration. They routinely exercise their creativity. The key is that they keep working even when they feel that they will never find a solution. Listening and Speaking1.Text AReading Comprehension1.Author’s definitionsCreativity is1) the process of having valuable ideas;2) a dynamic process of making new connections, crossing disciplines and using metaphors and analogies;3) about fresh thinking and making critical judgments.Gove’s opinions1) Possibly the same as myths.2) Learn the necessary skills before starting to be creative (a linear process).Myths1) Only special people are creative.2) Creativity is just about the arts.3) Creativity is all to do with uninhibited self-expression.Author’s opinionsCreativity:1) just as learning, is a highly personal process;2) is not a linear process, in which you must learn the skills before you get started;3) takes connoisseurship, judgment and creativity on the part of the teachers.Author’s suggestions1) Leave room for differences and not prescribe a standard for everyone.2) Don’t focus on skills in isolation.3) Feel free to innovate without fear of being punished.2.1) F2) F3) T4) T5) F6) T7) F8) TReading and Discussing3.For reference1) From Hans Zimmer’s story, we know that developing creativity needs the joint efforts of schools, teachers, and students. Everyon e who has ever found a solution to a problem has employed creativity. Most of the time, these efforts don’t require high levels of creativity. People high on the continuum of creativity have learned to take an active role in developing it by constantly finding out problems for further exploration. They routinely exercise their creativity. The key is that they keep working even when they feel that they will never find a solution.

When the soil gets dry, the bird chirps. The realist refines the idea by exploring various sensors and lithium-powered computer chips.Language in Use2.1) probed2) extract3) asset4) coordinate5) evaluate6) financial7) designated8) principle9) advocate10) routine3.1) Allowing for2) at the cost of3) figure out4) sort out5) transform … into6) called upon4.Reference translation1) Next, study the ideas and try to work them into something practical.2) Offer the employees the services of babysitting as a benefit.3) Encourage employees to take courses in marketing, advertising, public relations and so on in the community college.4) Have each employee bring in a family photo and put it on the working desk.5) Provide free services of real estate consultation and lectures on investment for employees so that they might utilize their assets reasonably.WritingExercise 11) I define creativity as the process of having ideas that have value. It’s a dynamic process that often involves making new connections, crossing disciplines and using metaphors and analogies. Creativity is about fresh thinking.2) In English, he says, “creativity depends on mastering certain skills and acquiring a body of knowledge before being able to give expression to what’s in you … You cannot be creative unless yo u understand how sentences are constructed, what words mean and how to use grammar.”3) There are various myths about creativity. One is that only special people are creative; another is that creativity is just about the arts;a third is that it’s all to do with uninhibited “self-expression”. Exercise 26) iPad — a line of tablet computers— is designed and marketed by the Apple company.Exercise 3SampleThe Meaning of CuriosityCuriosity is defined as a quality related to inquisitive thinking such as exploration, investigation, and learning. To me, curiosity is a hunger to explore and a delight in discovering. When we are curious, we approach the world with a child-like habit of poking, prodding and asking questions. We are attracted to new experiences. Rather than pursuing an agenda or a desired set of answers, we follow our questions where they lead. Curiosity lets us really listen to other people because we want to know who they are. We open ourselves up to the knowledge and experience they can share with us. We also expect to have discoveries of our own to share. Curiosity makes us interested in a broad range of information about the world around us. We learn for the joy of obtaining new knowledge. We will never know everything there is to know, but with our curiosity, we have learned so much.。
