从心理学的角度来说，奥苏贝尔提出学习是认知结构的重新组织，是新旧知识相互左右形成的。
因此认知心理学理论强调，在语言词汇的学习中运用学生母语中的词汇知识，进而简化英语词汇的学习，在这个过程中，需要依据陈述性和程序性知识的相互转化原理对词汇学习进行强化。
（二）认知语言学习理论。
认知语言学认为，人类的语言能力是认知能力的一部分，并不是一种孤立的能力，认知能力是人类知识的根本，语言的学习必须能够通过人的认知加以解释。
认知语言学认为，句法跟语言的语意和词汇是密不可分的，强调句法在语言学习中的重要性。
（三）认知隐喻。
隐喻是人类在语言过程中形成的经认知加工将一种事物暗喻为另一种事物的语言现象，其产生的基本条件是语义和语境的冲突，隐喻在功能上来说是在语言中形成了修饰的作用，并且在语言过程中起到了构成词汇、句子和语篇的功能。
隐喻不仅是一种修辞方法或是一种语言现象，其本质是人类理解世界的感知，是形成一定概念的工具。
很多词汇的产生及多重语义也是隐喻的结果，是一词多义的词义扩展基础，因此了解好隐喻是学习语言尤其是学习词汇的重要部分。
二、串记法的理论基础在英语学习中，串记法是一种在语境理论基础上发展出现的较新颖的记忆方法。
强调在语境中对单词进行记忆，具有很强的适用性和实用性。
（一）语境理论基础。
语境研究最早可以追溯到亚里士多德时期，但是语境这一概念最早是在19世纪20年代由英国人类学家马琳诺夫斯基提出——“如果没有语境，就没有意义”。
