Building Community, One Cut at a TimeAll over the world, barbershops not only fuel their local economies, but also bring people together. So when the community fell on hard times, Chris Bossio knew just what to do. Chris opened a barbershop called Headlines, where people could come together for a cut and some conversations.Chris volunteered his free time to teach other barbers new techniques. Impressed by hisdown-to-earth, easy-to-understand lessons, one of his business partners convinced him to post them on YouTube. That's when things really took off. The videos earned him a large number of subscribers and as Chris kept creating more, he saw his subscribers turn into clients. The freshmen in the line flooded in to exchange professional opinions and sharpen the skills, while more from the community came for a moment of peace, hence building a deeper bond.Business is booming but Chris didn't stop here. When he started Headlines, his initial goal was just to open five barbershops within five years. But as time went by, he was determined to share his success, focusing most of his time on empowering barbers. He held workshops where he trained barbers on not only the business of barbering, but also how to establish their brands. Once, his workshop attracted over 300 attendees. Many of his students have gone on to become successful barbers themselves, including about 40 who have opened their own shops in the area. “These shops serve as places wh ere community culture really comes together and comes to life,” he said. It was a dream come true for Chris. He also saw opportunities popping up as his channel grew. He started making a shaving gel (凝胶). It was another huge hit. He immediately launched a production line, creating a certain number of jobs in the community. Though the economy was in decline, he could sell 10,000 products per month in 15 countries. It's also been a lifeline during the COVID-19 shutdown, when barbershops were forced to close. Without it, Chris' business, as well as his employees, couldn't have survived.(Adopted and revised from https://blog. youtube/)[链接外刊对点演练]【原创】What does the underlined word “That” in paragraph 3 refer to?A.Chris shared new techniques. Otherwise, we would have felt the shock of puzzlement. The second sense is the one in which we read something that at first we do not completely 55 . I needed a recharge.” So he took a “gap year”, from July 2011 to June 2012, to explore things like ancient buildings, antique restoration, archaeology and traditional Eastern medicine, in locations including Alaska, Nepal and Romania.“Taking a break from work is an excellent way for adults to go into a new career or refresh an old one,” said Holly Bull, president of Princeton, N, J. “In recent years, mid-career breaks have been gaining more interest,” she said. A report on adult gap years published this year by a market research company also described the po tential American market for gap years as a “sleeping giant.”“A gap year is a challenge for the older individual to step out of a comfort zone and take a risk. I enjoyed that side most.” said Dr. Sinar, who kept a daily blog about his experience. His time studying Eastern medicine “assured the reasons I went into health care,” said Dr. Sinar, who returned to practice medicine at his old job, although he works fewer days. “I use those experiences to provide my patients with more care,” he added. “And I liste n better than I did before.”George Garritan, chairman of the Department of Leadership and Human Capital Management at New York University, certainly agrees with Dr. Sinar. He said a gap-year experience could be worthwhile for employees and companies. For employees, investing in themselves and improving skill sets is a move that will benefit throughout their career. He added that returning employees feel refreshed and have given more thought to their career. For companies, offering unpaid leaves makes good sense for attracting and keeping talented employees.66. A briefing paper from the Brookings Institution warns that “we may have overdone the message” on college, senior fellow Isabel Sawhill said.“We’ve been telling students and their families for years that college is the only way to succeed in the economy and of course there’s a lot of truth to that,” Ms. Sawhill said. “On average it does pay off… But if you load up on a whole lot of student deb t and then you don’t graduate, that is a very bad situation.”One comment that people often repeat among the years of slow job growth has been the value of education for landing a job and advancing in a career. April’s national unemployment rate stood at 7.5%, according to the Labor Department. The unemployment rate for high-school graduates over 25 years old who hadn’t attended college was 7.4%, compared with 3.9% for those with a bachelor’s degree or more education. The difference is even bigger among those aged 16-24. The jobless rate for those with only a high school diploma in that age group is about 20%. At the same time, recent research by Canadian economists cautions that a college degree is no guarantee of promising employment.Ms. Sawhill pointed out that among the aspects that affect the value of a college education is the field of one’s major: Students in engineering or other sciences end up earning more than ones who major in the arts or education. The cost of tuition and the availability of financial aid are other considerations, with public institutions generally a better financial bargain than private ones. She suggested two ways for improving the situation: increasing vocational-technical training programs and taking a page from Europe’s fo cus on early education rather than post-secondary learning. “The European countries put a little more attention to getting people prepared in the primary grades,” she said. “Then they have a higher bar for whoever goes to college—but once you get into coll ege, you’re more likely to be highly subsidized (资助).”She also is a supporter of technical training—to teach students how to be plumbers, welders and computer programmers—because “employers are desperate” for workers with these skills.74. According to the passage, people usually think that ________.A. the cost of technical schooling is a problemB. one will not succeed without a college degreeC. technical skills are most important for landing a jobD. there is an increased competition in getting into a college75. The underlined part “taking a page from” probably means “ ________ ”A. revisingB. promotingC. definingD. adopting76. What can we infer from the passage?A. Public institutions charge more for education.B. European universities are stricter with students.C. Students with certain skills are in great demand.D. 新教材2024届高考英语二轮专项分层特训卷第一部分专题强化练专题二阅读七选五强化训练十五逻辑推断法

强化训练十五逻辑推断法(A)In 2013, digital media consultant Baratunde Thurston launched an experiment. He decided to disconnect from his online life for twentyfive days: no Facebook, no Twitter, not even email. He needed the break. __1__It didn't take him long to adjust to a disconnected life. By the end of that first week, he was less stressed about not knowing new things. __2__ He enjoyed food without Twittering the experience. But the end came too soon. After the twentyfive days, he had to restore his online presence. His experiment summarizes two important points about our relationship with social networks like Facebook and Twitter. The first point is that we increasingly recognize that these tools fragment (碎裂) our time and reduce our ability to concentrate. __3__ But the problem is especially serious if you're attempting to improve your ability to work deeply. To fight back against these distractions, Thurston felt his only option was to quit the Internet altogether. But the problem is that no one is meant to actually follow Thurston's lead.__4__ That is to accept our current distracted state as unavoidable. This brings me to the second point summarized by Thurston's story: it didn't take him long once the experiment ended to slide back into the fragmented state where he began. This rule proposes a third option: accepting that these tools might be vital to your success and happiness, but meanwhile accepting that most people should be using fewer such tools. I won't ask you, in other words, to quit the Internet altogether like Thurston did. __5__ There is a middle ground, and if you're to develop a deep work habit, you must fight to get there.A.He struck up conversations with strangers.B.It is a real problem for many different people.C.“I was burnt out, fried, and done,” he explained.D.This reality accounts for the remaining alternative.E.He had to return to the online world with books to market.F.But I'll ask you to reject the state of highly distracted connectedness.G.Fortunately, you will break the habit of surfing the Internet gradually.[答题区]1.________ 2.________ 3.________ 4.________ 5.________(B)Want a relaxing but fun challenge at home? __1__ Puzzles have been around for more than 250 years and the challenge of working out where each piece goes and carefully recreating the scene on the box lid can keep you busy for hours, days or even weeks.Puzzles come in a huge range of sizes and difficulty levels. For beginners, a 100piece puzzle is usually a good starting point. __2__ Try grouping pieces with the same colours or designs because they will probably go in the same area oncethe puzzle takes shape.__3__ Those pieces are easier to find because they have a straightside. Stay patient as you search through and try to make it fit together. You maynot find any connecting pieces for ages but then several may suddenly appear. For a real test, puzzles that have 1,000 pieces or more are a tough taskand it's best to complete them with friends or family if you can. Choosing a scenethat interests you, such as a favourite film, sport or location, can help keep you interested and determined to work to the final piece. You can get fun educational puzzles, too. __4__Some of the best places to pick up puzzles are charity shops. They're oftenon sale for less than $5. Once you have completed a puzzle, it's nice to exchangeit with a friend. __5__ You just upload an image, such as a familyscene, and they will make a puzzle from it and post it to you. It makes a lovelyand unusual present.A.So others can have a go.B.You can't beat a good puzzle.C.Some companies make personalised puzzles.D.However, a good start doesn't always lead to a good result.E.Most people like to start by getting the four edges of a puzzle laid out.F.It can get you used to sorting out how the shapes, patterns and coloursgo together.G.For example, you may try a map of the world, historical timelines or theperiodic table.[答题区]1.________ 2.________ 3.________ 4.________ 5.________(C)The arrival of autumn has left me charmed once again by its generous harvestof pomegranates (石榴). My eyes were fixed on the word "congratulations". I don't remember ever smiling so wide. Then I looked at my financial (财政的) package. The cost of Dream School's tuition (学费), room and board was around $ 40,000-an impossible number! How could I afford to attend? What good reasons did I have to go there when three other fine colleges were offering me free tuition? My other choices were good, even if they weren't as famous as my first choice. In my mind, attending my dream university would be the only way to realize my dream of becoming a world-class writer. My parents understood how I felt. They told me that even though it would be a financial problem, I could go wherever I would be happiest. But as I was always careful with money, I wasn't sure what to do.One of the schools that offered me a full ride had an informational dinner one night in the spring. Considering my parents' difficulties, I decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend. At first, all I had planned to do was smile politely, eat free food, listen quietly. But I surprised myself. At dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities at school including guest lectures and social gatherings. He also made it perfectly clear that free food would be offered at all future events. He continued with explanations of professors, class sizes, activities, and sporting events at school. As he spoke, I began to realize that this school, though not as good as my first choice, might be the best one for me. It seemed small yet with many great programs. It seemed challenging yet caring. After that I walked out that door, a feeling of comfort washed over me. Looking at the campus that night, I realized that I would be spending the next four years right there. In all honesty, my university is not as well-known as my "dream" university.
