I always beg my mom to make them for me.Then there's Hunan Xiaochi, or Hunan snacks and small dishes. There are so many different kinds! My favorites are the spicy rice noodles, steamed beef balls in hot soup, and candied hawthorn berries on a stick. The hawthorn berries are sweet, sour and a little tangy all at once. Whenever we go to the night market, I have to get a skewer of those!You can't talk about Changsha food without mentioning the spice! Hunan cuisine is famous for being super spicy and flavorful. One of the most iconic dishes is Xiang La Tu Dou Si, which is spicy shredded potatoes. It's stir-fried with chili peppers, Sichuan peppercorns, ginger and garlic. Just thinking about it is making my eyes water! But it's soooo delicious. My dad always tells me I have to build up my tolerance for spicy food.For a milder but still super tasty dish, I love Zhang Jiang Tun Niu Juan – Changsha-style beef rolls. It's thinly sliced beef rolled up with bamboo shoots, mushrooms, and a tasty brown sauce. My grandma makes the best version and hers always disappear super fast whenever she makes them.Then we have all the delicious fresh produce grown right in Hunan! There are so many different kinds of yummy fruits and veggies. One famous veggie is the Xiang bamboo shoot, which is really crunchy and delicious in stir-fries. And in the summer, you have to try jor gyu – lychees! They're sweet and a little floral, and the perfect snack on a hot day.My mouth is watering so much just describing all this food! Hunan cuisine really is some of the best and most flavorful in all of China. Whenever family visits from other parts of the country, we always take them out for Changsha specialties. And they're always blown away by how delicious it is!The next time you visit China, you have to make a stop in Changsha and eat as much of the local food as you can. I'm telling you, your taste buds will never be the same! Just be ready for lots of chili peppers and big, bold flavors. That's what Hunan food is all about.I feel so lucky to have grown up eating such amazing cuisine. It's a huge part of the culture in Changsha and the pride of our city.
