In order to be saved after a marathon effort to bring him to the mainland from 200km to the sea, Greg Pickering was operated on several times in 24 hours.

Pickering, 55, was diving for abalone (鲍鱼) on Tuesday morning off the coast of Western Australia’s Cape Arid national park. It was then that he was attacked by a great white shark.

Police were alerted (警觉的) at 10:30 am local time on Tuesday, but Pickering did not reach Royal Perth hospital until that evening. He was first brought to land by divers, then taken to Esperance hospital by ambulance and finally airlifted 700km to Perth.

A kill order has been issued for the shark which attacked Pickering, but authorities have admitted they will not be able to tell whether it is the right shark until it has been killed.

It took the doctors 10 hours to operate on Pickering at Royal Perth hospital.

The first time he was attacked by a shark was in 2004 and was bitten on the leg; fortunately, the injury was not as much serious as he thought.

Stuart Smith, the director-general of the Department of Fisheries, has ordered that traps be set up to catch and kill the animal. He says sharks are a danger to campers in the area and he also emphasizes that there is a possibility that the wrong one might be killed. He told ABC Radio on Wednesday that “We probably won’t know for sure unless there’s evidence of DNA that we will be able to test.”

It is the second time a kill order has been issued in Western

Australia. The first was also for a great white shark, although it was never found.

Pickering has been diving for abalone for about 40 years. He also made news headline in 2009 when the boat he was diving from capsized (倾覆) and he spent three hours in the water with the sailor before being rescued.

58. The last paragraph intends to tell us that _________.

A. Pickering is interested in diving.

B. Pickering is a news reporter.

C. Pickering once rescued a sailor.

Walls and wall building have played a very important role in Chinese culture. In ancient times, not only towns and villages, but also the houses and the temples within them were surrounded with walls. Also, the houses had no windows overlooking the street. Thus, walking in a city would give the feeling of wandering around a huge maze (迷宫). The word “city”in Chinese also means “wall”. The god of walls and mounts, whose duty was, and still is, to protect and be responsible for the welfare of the residents in these cities, villages, houses and temples. So a great and extremely hard task such as constructing a wall, which was supposed to run the length of the country, might not sound absurd(荒诞的).

However, it is indeed a common mistake to think of the Great Wall as a single building structure, and it would also be a mistake to assume that it was built during a single dynasty. Actually, several dynasties somehow contributed to the construction of the Great Wall, the foundations of which had been laid many centuries ago. It was during the fourth and third centuries BC that warring states started building

walls to protect their kingdoms, both against one another and against the northern nomads (游牧民族).

The Great Wall played an important role in the growth of Chinese economy in history. Many settlements were established along the new border. Armies were instructed to reclaim (开垦) wasteland and to plant crops there. Also, roads and canals were built. All of the work greatly helped increase the country’s trade and cultural exchanges with many remote areas and also with the southern, central and western parts of Asia.

59. Why did ancient Chinese cities seem like a maze?

A. Because there were usually more walls than houses.

B. Because the outside walls of houses had no windows.

C. Because the word “city” means “wall”.

D. Because there were legends about the god of walls.

60. According to the passage, constructing a wall running the length of the country _______.

A. was an order from the god of walls and mounts

B. was a completely absurd task

C. might make sense within Chinese culture

D. seriously prevented the spread of Chinese culture

61. The second paragraph is mainly about ________.

A. how the Great Wall was constructed

B. why the Great Wall is so popular

C. how advanced the Great wall was

D. who should pay a visit to the Great Wall

62. We can learn from the last paragraph that ________.

A. most ancient people don’t like the Great Wall

B. the Great Wall promoted trade in China and abroad

C. the Great Wall was most famous in the western part of Asia

D. people nowadays should protect the Great Wall for its use in trade

C

It is well known that the United States’population come from all over the world. The immigrants can learn the language, English, to keep this country united, but it is unnecessary to change their culture for an American way of life.

I believe that recent immigrants should learn English in order to live in the country. They should learn the “public language”. If they don’t learn English, they won’t be able to communicate and do what they want. For example, my mother’s friend came to the United States from Ecuador three years ago. She doesn’t speak English. One day, her

daughter, Anita, couldn’t breathe. Anita didn’t know what was going on, but she told her mother to call an ambulance. When her mother called the hospital, she couldn’t communicate. The operator couldn’t understand what Anita’s mother was saying. Fortunately, her mother’s sister arrived and called the ambulance. The doctor told her sister that if she hadn’t arrived at the hospital on time, Anita could have died. A pill had gotten stuck in her throat.

Immigrants should learn English to speak with the public, but they can also keep their language at home. The children of immigrants should learn how to speak their parents’ language. It is very important to communicate with our relatives and family. If we learn English only and forget our private “language”, we won’t be able to communicate with our parents. For example, Florence, my co-worker, speaks English only. Her mother didn’t teach her Spanish (her mother’s mother language). Now, Florence can’t communicate with her grandparents or other relatives in Puerto Rico. She has lost her mother’s mother language, tradition and culture.

Immigrants have the freedom to keep their culture and values. Immigrants should know where they come from and what their family’s culture is. In this way, they can transmit it to future generations. In conclusion, immigrants should learn English in order to communicate with the public and to keep the country united, but they shouldn’t give up their own culture.

63. Who played the most important part in calling an ambulance fro Anita?

A. Anita’s mother.

B. Anita’s aunt.

C. The operator.

D. The doctor.

64. If immigrants in the United States can’t speak their parents’

language, what trouble might they have?

A. They can’t ask for help whey they get lost in the United States.

B. They can’t call p olice for help whey they are in trouble in the United States.

C. They can’t go shopping by themselves conveniently in the Untied States.

D. They can’t make themselves understood while in their original country.

65. The author develops the passage mainly by _________.

A. providing typical examples

B. following the natural time order

C. comparing opinions from different people

D. presenting a cause and analyzing its effects

66. By writing the passage, the author mainly wants to ________.

A. advise immigrants to learn English and keep their own culture

B. show that the United States is a multi-cultural country

C. explain why so many people move to the United States

D. describe the difficulties immigrants meet in a new country

D

It is never too early for young children to compete in athletic activities. I t is true that children used to take part in outdoor sports and games. Today many young people stay inside watching television, playing computer games, or surfing the Internet. Rarely can people see children today, enjoying themselves outdoors, on playgrounds or even in neighborhoods.

Young people who join in after-school sports activities will be out of the house. They will be on the move, running and jumping, which is great exercise. They will learn discipline and the importance of being a team player, whey they are part of an organized sport. They also learn about good sportsmanship, teamwork and gaining confiden ce. There are even sports that young athletes do better in school. Outdoor sports give children, teens and young adults the opportunity for fresh air and sunshine, which improve their over-all health. They will obtain Vitamin D from the sun, and burn extra calories which will help prevent obesity (肥胖). It is important that a child enjoy what he or she is doing.

Children do better in sports events, when they have a healthy desire and a natural ability for a particular activity. While track and field events may not be some small children’s cup of tea, there were other children who enjoyed themselves and received rewards. The Rhodes family joined in the Subway Commonwealth Games for the first time. The 3 siblings took home 2 medals each, for a total of 6. Eight-year-old Jerel Rhodes II, won gold medals for the shot put (推铅球), and the discus (铁饼) throw. Seven-year-old Jadyn Rhodes, received a silver medal fro the shot put, and a bronze medal in the 400-meter race. Five-year-old Jase Rhodes took home the gold medal in the 800-meter race, as well as the discuss throw.

There is a down side to athletic activities. Not everyone will go home as a winner. If your child does not win a medal, you should not complain about him or her. You should be proud of him or her just for taking part. If a child feels bad about his or her performance, he or she may be teased by other children, or his or her parents may express

disappointment. All these can have an effect on self-esteem. The bottom line is to get your children out of the house, and to be involved in activities that keep them moving. Playing on the playground or playing games such as hide and seek can be fun for all. If your child is indeed a young athlete in the making, encourage —but do not push — him or her to take advantage of organized competitive sports.

The Mayo Clinic, an internationally famous medical research group, says that all children should be encouraged to be active in sports. Pushing boys and girls into areas where they are not comfortable, or they do not have the athletic ability could have the worst effect on them. If you encourage those like the Rhodes family, who have the desire to play sports, they just might bring home a gold, silver or bronze medal.

67. In the author’s opinion today’s children _______.

A. frequently play on the playground

B. stay up watching TV or surfing the Internet

C. often take part in outdoor sports and games

D. are rarely seen enjoying themselves outdoors

68. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?

A. Young people liking or enjoying what they are doing.

B. The importance of teamwork, discipline and confidence

C. The benefits of young people taking part in outdoor sports

D. The help of activities for young people to prevent obesity.

69. What does the underlined word “siblings”in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

A. Brothers of a family.

B. All family members.

C. Very active athletes.

D. Some active partners.

70. What is the main advice that the author gives parents?

A. Making children take advantage of organized competitive sports.

B. The earlier children take part in sports activities, the better they are.

C. Encouraging their children to join in sports instead of pushing them

D. Forcing children to take part in sports activities if they don’t want to.

第Ⅱ卷(非选择题,共35分)

第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

Socrates is one of the philosophers whose influence has been the greatest. He was born around 470 BC in Athens. Socrates was a great doubter who believed that we should question everything. He used questioning to show how little we really understand about anything. While the earlier thinkers tried to explain the universe, he didn’t believe that this was particularly useful. More important questions were: What is good? What is justice? He taught that it was our behavior and the way we lived that are important. We should think for ourselves and be true to our ideas and beliefs. In the end, he was tried (审判) and condemned to death in 399 BC. He was believed to be a dangerous influence because he taught people to question everything, even the law.

Aristotle was another great philosopher whose ideas continue to be studied today. Born in 384 BC, at the age of 17 he was sent to Athens where he lived until 322 BC. Aristotle founded the philosophy of logic which says that there is an explanation for everything that exists. He stressed the importance of knowledge and a good education for everyone. Aristotle also believed that each human being wants a happy life and this can only be achieved by living in a well-ordered society. He also taught that the purpose of government and the state is to make possible the happiness of its citizens. Like Socrates, Aristotle was condemned by the authorities who feared his influence. He escaped execution by leaving Athens in 323 BC but he died the following year at the age of 62.

第六部分书面表达(20分)

As we can see in the picture, an old man falls down on the street, but no one offers help to him. The passers-by fear that they will be mistaked for the trouble maker.

The picture reflects that many people are not willing to help the old who fall down on the street. Several factors may contribute to this phenomenon. Some people refuse to help the old because they don’t think they can give the old correct medical care due to a lack of professional skills. Another major reason is that they are afraid of being charged with knocking him or her down and getting themselves into trouble if they help the old.

As for me, we should help the old who fall down on the street. As

we all know, it is a traditional Chinese virtue to show respect for and take good care of the old. If we come across an old person falling down on the street, we can lend him or her a helping hand by calling the medical care centre. I hope there will be less indifference and more warmth in our society.
