Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.

“I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How you like it?” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.”

Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.

Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.

No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best friend.”

But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There’s still a lot strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon V alley College, “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”

Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say.

“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but today’s parents, the 40-year-old, were on the ‘after’side,”explains Mr. Ballmer. “It’s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”

44. The underlined word gulf in Para. 3 most probably means _______.

A. interest

B. distance

C. difference

D. separation

45. Which of the following show that the generation gap is disappearing?

A. Parents help their children develop interests in more activities.

B. Parents put more trust in their children’s abilities.

C. Parents and children talk more about sex and drugs.

D. Parents share more interests with their children.

46. The change in today’s parent-child relationship is _____.

A. more confusion among parents

B. new equality between parents and children

C. less respect for parents from children

D. more strictness and authority on the part of parents

47. The purpose of the passage is to _____.

A. describe the difficulties today’s parents have met with

B. discuss the development of the parent-child relationship

C. suggest the ways to handle the parent-child relationship

D. compare today’s parent-child relationship with that in the past

In Britain and other countries, young people sometimes take a “gap year”,a year off between high school and college. This idea never gained a big following in America. Recent news reports have suggested that interest may be growing, though there are no official numbers.

Charles Deacon, dean of Admissions at Georgetown University in Washington D.C., estimates that in the current first-year class of 1,600 students, only about 25 decided to take a year off. He says this number hasn’t changed much over the years.

Mr. Deacon says the most common reason for taking a “gap year” is to have a chance to travel, but he says international students may take a “gap year” to meet requirements at home for military duty.

Some high school graduates see a year off as a chance to recover after twelve years of required education, but it can also give students a chance to explore their interests. Students hoping to be doctors, for example, could learn about the profession by volunteering in a hospital.

Many colleges and universities support gap-year projects by permitting students to delay their admission. Experts say students can grow emotionally and intellectually as they work at something they enjoy.

The Harvard admissions office has an essay on its Web site called “Time Out or Burn Out for the Next Generation”. It praises the idea of taking t ime off to step back, think and enjoy gaining life experiences outside the pressure of studies. It also notes that students are sometimes admitted to Harvard or other colleges partly because they did something unusual with that time.

Of course, a “gap year” is not for everyone. Students might miss their friends who go on directly to college, and parents might worry that their children will decide not to go to college once they take time off. Another concern is money. A year off, away from home, can be costly.

Holly Bull’s job is to specialize in helping students plan their “gap year”. She notes that several books have been written about this subject. She says these books along with media attention and the availability of information on the Internet have increased interest in the idea of a year off, and

she points out that many gap-year programs cost far less than a year of college.

48.What is the passage mainly about?

A. More and more American students are choosing to take a year off.

B. If you want to go to an American university, take a “gap year” first.

C. It is likely that taking a “gap year” is becoming popular in America.

D. Americans hold different opinions towards students’ taking a “gap year”.

49.How many reasons for students’ taking a “gap year” are mentioned in the passage?

A. every student must take a “gap year” before applying for a famous university

B. some famous universities encourage students to gain more life experiences

C. taking a “gap year” can make students free from life learning

D. the stress of studies does harm to the students’ health

51.What can we learn from the passage?

A. Books and media have contributed to the students’ inter est in school learning.

B. Charles Deacon doesn’t support the idea of the students’ taking a “gap year”.

C. Parents might disagree with the program, concerned about their children’s future.

D. Experts agree taking a year off will benefit the students emotionally and physically.

It was a Sunday morning, and I was in a terrible mood. Two of my friends had gone to the movies the night before and hadn’t invited me. I was in my room thinking of ways to make them sorry when my father came in. “Want to go for a ride, today, Beck? It’s a beautiful day.”

“No! Leave me alone!” Those were the last words I said to him that morning.

My friends called and invited me to go to the mall with them a few hours later. I forgot to be mad at them and went. I came home to find a note on the table. My mother put it where I would be sure to see it. “Dad has had an accident. Please meet us at Highland Park Hospital”.

When I reached the hospital, my mother came out and told me my father’s injuries were extensive. “Your father told the driver to leave him alone and just call 911, thank God! If he had moved Daddy, there’s no telling what might have happened. A broken rib (肋骨) might have pierced (穿透) a lung....”

My mother may have said more, but I didn’t hear. I didn’t hear anythi ng except those terrible words: Leave me alone. My dad said them to save himself from being hurt more. How much had I hurt him when I hurled (愤慨地说出) those words at him earlier in the day?

It was several days later that he was finally able to have a conversation. I held his hand gently, afraid of hurting him.

“Daddy... I am so sorry....”

“It’s okay, sweetheart. I’ll be okay.”

“No,” I said, “I mean about what I said to you that day. You know, that morning?”

My father could no more tell a lie than he could fly. He looked at me and said, “Sweetheart, I don’t remember anything about that day, not before, during or after the accident. I remember kissing you goodnight the night before, though.” He managed a weak smile.

My English teacher once told me that words have immeasurable power. They can hurt or they can heal. And we all have the power to choose our words. I intend to do that very carefully from now on.

52. The author was in bad mood that morning because ________.

A. his father had a terrible accident

B. he couldn’t drive to the mall with his friends

C. his friends hadn’t invited him to the cinema

D. his father didn’t allow him to go out with his friends

53. Why did the author say sorry to his father in the hospital?

A. Because he didn’t go along with his father.

B. Because he was rude to his father that morning.

C. Because he failed to come earlier after the accident.

D. Because he couldn’t look after his father in the hospital.

54. The reason why the author’s father said he forgot everythin g about that day is that ________.

A. he had a poor memory

B. he didn’t want to forgive his son

C. he just wanted to comfort his son

D. he lost his memory after the accident

55. What lesson did Beck learn from the matter?

A. Don’t treat your parents badly.

B. Don’t hurt others with rude words.

C. Don’t move the injured in an accident.

D. Don’t be angry with friends at small things.

Quality after-school programs are designed to improve academic performance, decrease youth crimes and other high-risk behaviors, and help young people grow into healthy, successful adults. The effect of quality after-school programs on academic performance is clear. Studies show that students who take part in such programs show better work habits, higher rates of homework completion, improved grades, and higher scores on achievement tests. They also have fewer absences and are less likely to blame. After-school programs also influence high-risk teen behavior. Various studies show decreased rates of crime, drug-taking, and teen sex among youth who join in well-run after-school programs when compared to similar youth who do not. Finally, after-school

programs play an important role in supporting different kinds of fields of development: physical development, mental development and social development. Thus, one can safely say that after-school programming is an effective method to help young people become contributing members of society.

Although there is enough proof from both small and large assessments that after-school programs can make a positive difference, it is important to note that not all programs are equal. First, dosage matters -- young people who attend the most hours over the most years benefit more than members who attend less often or over a shorter period of time. Next, after-school programs make a bigger difference for those students who need help most and have the fewest choices. Finally, program qualities matter. After-school programs work best when they create unique opportunities for youth. They should provide opportunities, skill building meaningful involvement, expression, suggestion, service, and work. Staff characteristics make an important difference in the quality of a program. The adults should treat youth as partners, create safe and fair environment, encourage personalized involvement, and actively create learning opportunities. In short, although after-school programs have a promising future, how they are designed and run matters.
