Now this former royal palace is open to the public as a major tourist attraction. Visit the palace and its various historic gardens, which include the famous maze (迷宫) where it is easy to get lost!Tour D—Cambridge including entrance fees to the Tower of Saint Mary the Great—£33 until 18 March and £37 thereafter.Includes a guided tour of Cambridge, the famous university town, and the gardens of the 18th century.1. Which tour will you choose if you want to see England's oldest university city?A. Tour A.B. Tour B.C. Tour C.D. Tour D.2. Which of the following tours charges the lowest fee on 17 March?A. Cambridge.B. Oxford & Stratford.C. Bath & Stonehenge.D. Windsor Castle & Hampton Court.3. Why is Hampton Court a major tourist attraction?A. It is a world-famous castle.B. It is the oldest palace in Britain.C. It used to be a well-known maze.D. It used to be the residence of royal families.BThey talk about the straw that broke the camel’s back, but really it should be the password that wiped out my memory bank.I was going along fine—with instant recall of my bank PIN (密码), my mobile phone number and the date of my cousin’s birthday before I downloaded a gas station payment app for its new customer discount. It asked me to create a password. When I typed in “gas1”, it was rejected for not being complex enough. I tried again: “IHateHeartlessOilCompanies@”. But that was too long and didn’t include “at least one number”. But here is the thing: as soon as I added the fresh password into my memory, I instantly forgot all the others. My brain had hit its limit for passwords. I now know nothing.I had entered some passwords in a notebook. Of course, I didn’t write down the actual passwords, in case it fell into the wrong hands. Instead, I masked them in a way that only a family member could figure them out. For example, I combined my bank PIN with our postal code, then added it to a list of phone numbers. It would fool even Albert Einstein.Maybe we need a system like the one we use to remember people’s names. You know, you form an association between a person’s characteristics and their name by whispering “Skinny George, Skinny George” in heart after meeting them. The risk is that, upon seeing him, you’ll burst out the phrase. “Skinny George” might not mind, but it’s possible “Boring Betty” will. As for remembering passwords as you change them, you could simply use the first and last letters of your favorite singer’s greatest hits, together with the year of their release.Maybe I’ll try that one out—but only after describing the system in the notebook. Then I’ll hide it in a place so secret that I’ll never remember where it is.4. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?A. He fell for a marketing trick.B. He was driven mad by passwords.C. He had a serious memory disorder.D. He was rejected by the gas station.5. By mentioning Albert Einstein in paragraph 3, the author intends to .A. show how secure his passwords wereB. challenge the intelligence of scientistsC. prove the uselessness of his passwordsD. promote a more scientific password system6. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A. To encourage readers to use password notebooks.B. To recommend a password-remembering method.C. To complain about the trouble caused by passwords.D. To point out the importance of using complex passwords.7. What is the tone of the text?A. Inspiring.B. Indifferent.C. Humorous.D. Serious.CNew technologies tend to cause a cycle of concern, disorder, and conflict before eventually being accepted. Recent writings about artificial intelligence (AI) and other advances in computer science suggest that we are preparing to welcome the final stage of this latest round of invention. The Last Human Job, sociologist Allison Pugh’s new book centered on caregiving and human connection in the age of automation, warns readers against unreserved acceptance of these technological advances, citing “connective labor” as valuable human work that will not be easily replaced by algorithms (算法). “Absent from discussions about Al and automation,” Pugh argues, “is the impact that these systems might have on the emotional understandings we build of ourselves and others.”Pugh sets the stage by arguing for the value of human connection and the importance of both seeing and being seen by others. “Practitioners (从业者) said they gained a sense of purpose simply from the opportunity of observing people at their most defenseless,” she observes. She then provides a summary of how care work is being increasingly automated, showing how quantification and measurement have taken over many aspects of human-facing jobs, leaving little room for doctors, teachers, and others to build connection.“When one goes to a doctor or a teacher, the encounter is full of the potential for shame, a risk that makes it all the more powerful when practitioners show empathetic (同理心的) reflection,” writes Pugh. In Chapter Eight, she explains how such interactions can be done right. Research conducted by herself and others identifies three key aspects supporting connective labor: “relational design,” or how people are set up to interact with one another; “connective culture,” or shared practices and beliefs that influence how people interact; and “resource distribution,” which includes time given for interaction, worker-to-client rates, and the extent of technology and data use, among other factors.Pugh concludes by arguing that we need a social movement for connection. “We need to fight for what we might call our ‘social health’,” she maintains.8. What is the main concern of Allison Pugh’s new book?A. The impact of AI on future employment.B. The approach to living and working with AI.C. The increasing role of technology in caregiving.D. The value of connective labor in the age of automation.9. Why does the author mention “practitioners” in paragraph 3?A. To explain how to do care work.B. To argue against the automation technology.C. To prove the significance of human connection.D. To discuss the challenges of privacy in caregiving.10. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?A. The encounter.B. The shame.C. The risk.D. The potential.11. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?A. The overview of Chapter Eight.B. The effective way to interact.C. The new trend of caregiving.D. The factors of avoiding shame.DAs cities balloon with growth, access to nature for people living in urban areas is becoming harder to find. If you’re lucky, there might be a pocket park near where you live, but it’s unusual to find places in a city that are relatively wild.Past research has found health and wellness benefits of nature for humans, but a new study shows that wildness in urban areas is extremely important for human well-being.The research team focused on a large urban park. They surveyed several hundred park-goers, asking them to submit a written summary online of a meaningful interaction they had with nature in the park. The researchers then examined these submissions, coding (编码) experiences into different categories. For example, one participant’s experience of “We sat and listened to the waves at the beach for a while” was assigned the categories “sitting at beach”and “listening to waves.”Across the 320 submissions, a pattern of categories the researchers call a “nature language” began to emerge. After the coding of all submissions, half a dozen categories were noted most often as important to visitors. These include encountering wildlife, walking along the edge of water, and following an established trail.Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which helps people recognize and take part in the activities that are most satisfying and meaningful to them. For example, the experience of walking along the edge of water might be satisfying for a young professional on a weekend hike in the park. Back downtown during a workday, they can enjoy a more domestic form of this interaction by walking along a fountain on their lunch break.“We’re trying to generate a language that helps bring the human-nature interactions back into our daily lives. And for that to happen, we also need to protect nature so that we can interact with it,” said Peter Kahn,a senior author of the study.12. What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text?A. Pocket parks are now popular.B. Many cities are overpopulated.C. Wild nature is hard to find in cities.D. People enjoy living close to nature.13. Why did the researchers code participant submissions into categories?A. To analyze the main features of the park.B. To explain why the park attracts tourists.C. To compare different types of park-goers.D. To find patterns in the visitors’ summaries.14. What can we learn from the example given in paragraph 5?A. Walking is the best way to gain access to nature.B. Young people are too busy to interact with nature.C. The same nature experience takes different forms.D. The nature language enhances work performance.15. What should be done before we can interact with nature according to Kahn?A. Language study.B. Environmental conservation.C. Public education.D. Intercultural communication.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

The fruits that made it to the UK were green on the outside and, more often than not, hard with an unpleasant taste within. Then in 1966, the Del Monte Gold pineapple produced in Hawaii first hit our shelves. The new type of pineapple looked more yellowy-gold than green. It was slightly softer on the outside and had a lot of juice inside. But the most important thing about this new type of pineapple was that it was twice as sweet as the hit-and-miss pineapples we had known. In no time, the Del Monte Gold took the market by storm, rapidly becoming the world’s best-selling pineapple variety, and delivering natural levels of sweetness in the mouth, up until then only found in tinned pineapple. In nutrition it was all good news too. This nice tasting pineapple contained four times more vitamin C than the old green variety. Nutritionists said that it was not only full of vitamins, but also good against some diseases. People were understandably eager to be able to buy this wonderful fruit. The new type of pineapple was selling fast, and the Del Monte Gold pineapple rapidly became a fixture in the shopping basket of the healthy eater.Seeing the growing market for its winning pineapple, Del Monte tried to keep market to itself. But other fruit companies argued successfully that Del Monte turned to law for help, but failed. Those companies argued successfully that Del Monte’s attempts to keep the golden pineapple for itself were just a way to knock them out the market.24. We learn from the text that the new type at pineapple is __________.A. green outside and sweet insideB. good-looking outside and soft insideC. yellowy-gold outside and hard insideD. a little soft outside and sweet inside25. Why was the new type of pineapple selling well?A. It was rich in nutrition and tasted nice.B. It was less sweet and good for health.C. It was developed by Del Monte.D. It was used as medicine.26. The underlined word “fixture” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to something _________.A. that people enjoy eatingB. that is always presentC. that is difficult to getD. that people use as a gift27. We learn from the last paragraph that Del Monte _________.A. slowed other companies to develop pineapplesB. succeeded in keeping the pineapple for itselfC. tried hard to control the pineapple marketD. planned to help the other companiesCEssentially, everyone has two ages: a chronological(按时间计算的)age, how old the calendar says you are, and a biological age, basically the age at which your body functions as it compares to average fitness or health levels.“Chronological age isn’t how old we really are. It’s merely a number,” said Professor David Sinclair at Harvard University. “It is biological age that determines our health and ultimately our lifespan. We all age biologically at different rates according to our genes, what we eat, how much we exercise, and what environment we live in. Biological age is the number of candles we really should be blowing out. In the future, with advances in our ability to control biological age, we may have even fewer candles on our birthday cake than the previous one.To calculate biological age, Professor Levine at Yale University identified ninebio-makers that seemed to be the most influential on lifespan by a simple blood test. The numbers of those markers, such as blood sugar and immune measures, can be put into thecomputer, and the algorithm(算式)does the rest.Perhaps what’s most important here is that these measures can be ch anged. Doctors can take this information and help patients make changes to lifestyle, and hopefully take steps to improve their biological conditions. “I think the most exciting thing about this research is that these things aren’t set in stone,” Levine said. “People can be given the information earlier and take steps to improve their health before it’s too late.”Levine even entered her own numbers into the algorithm. She was surprised by the results. “I always considered myself a very healthy person. I’m physically activ e;I eat what I consider a fairly healthy diet. But I did not find my results to be as good as I had hoped they would be. It was a wake-up call,” she said.Levine is working with a group to provide access to the algorithm online so that anyone can calculate their biological age, identify potential risks and take steps to improve their health in the long run. “No one wants to live an extremely longlife with a lot of chronic(慢性的)diseases,” Levine said. “By delaying the development of mental and physical functioning problems, people can still be engaged in society in their senior years. That is the ideal we should be pursuing.”28. Biological age depends on ______.A. whether we can adapt ourselves to the environmentB. when we start to take outdoor exerciseC. how well our body works compared with our peers’D. what the calendar says about our age29. By saying “we may have even fewer candles on our birthday cake than the previous one.” in Para. 2, the author means ______.A. we are chronologically older than last yearB. we might be less happy than the previous yearC. we don’t have to celebrate our birthday every yearD. we may be biologically younger than the year before30. What does the author want to tell us by Levine’s example in Pa ra. 5?A. It is necessary to change our diet regularly.B. The test results may give us wrong information.C. Waking up early in the morning is good for our fitness.D. The algorithm can reveal our potential health problems.31. The ultimate g oal of Levine’s research is to ______.A. provide people with access to scientific theoryB. work out a solution to genetic problemsC. keep people socially active even in old ageD. free people from chronic diseasesDEnough “meaningless drivel”. That’s the message from a group of members of the UK government who have been examining how social media firms like LinkedIn gather and use social media data. The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee’s report, released last week, has blamed firms for making people sign up to long incomprehensible legal contracts and calls for an international standard or kitemark (认证标记) to identify sites that have clear terms and conditions. “The term and conditions statement that we all carelessly agree to i s meaningless drivel to anyone,” says Andrew Miller, the chair of the committee. Instead, he says, firms should provide a plain-English version of their terms. The simplified version would be checked by a third party and awarded a kitemark if it is an accurate reflection of the original. It is not yet clear who would administer the scheme, but the UK government is looking at introducing it on a voluntary basis. “we need to think through how we make that work in practice,” says Miller.Would we pay any more attention to a kitemark? “I think if you went and did the survey, people would like to think they would,” says Nigel Shadbolt at the University of Southampton, UK, who studies open data. “We do know people worry a lot about theinappropriate use of their i nformation.” But what would happen in practice is another matter, he says.Other organizations such as banks ask customers to sign long contracts they may not read or understand, but Miller believes social media requires special attention because it is so new. “We still don’t know how significant the long-term impact is going to be of unwise things that kids put on social media that come back and bite them in 20 years’ time,” he says.Shadbolt, who gave evidence to the committee, says the problem is that we don’t know how companies will use our data because their business models and uses of data are still evolving.Large collections of personal information have become valuable only rec ently, he says. The shock and anger when a social media firm does something with data that people don’t expect, even if users have apparently permission, show that the current situation isn’t working. If properly administered, a kitemark on terms and conditions could help people know what exactly they are signing up to. Although they would still have to actually read them.32. What does the phrase “meaningless drivel”in paragraphs 1 and2 refer to?A. Guidelines on how to use social media websites properly.B. Warnings from the UK government against unsafe websites.C. Legal contracts that social media firms make people sign up to.D. Insignificant data collected by social media firms.33.It can be inferred from the passage that Nigel Shadbolt doubts whethe r _______.A. social media firms would conduct a survey on the kitemark scheme .B. people would pay as much attention to a kitemark as they think.C. a kitemark scheme would be workable on a nationwide scale.D. the kitemark would help companies develop their business models.34. Andrew Miller thinks social media needs more attention than banksmainly because ______A. their users consist largely of kids under 20 years old.B. the language in their contracts is usually harder to understand.C. the information they collected could become more valuable in futu re.D. it remains unknown how users’data will be taken advantage of.35. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A. Say no to social media?B. New security rules in operation?C. Accept without reading?D. Administration matters!第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)36 You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how: Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. (共10小题,每小题2.5分,满分25分)AWhat's on Your Pet's Mind?In 1977, Irene Pepperberg of Harvard University began studying what was on another creature's mind by talking to it. Her first experiments began with Alex. Alex was a one-year-old African grey parrot and Irene taught him to produce the sounds of the English language. "I thought if he learned to communicate, I could ask him questions about how he sees the world."At the time, most scientists didn't believe animals had any thoughts. They thought animals were more like robots but didn't have the ability to think or feel. Of course, if you own a pet you probably disagree. But it is the job of a scientist to prove this and nowadays more scientists accept that animals can think for themselves."That's why I started my studies with Alex," Irene said, "Some people actually called me crazy for trying this."Nowadays, we have more and more evidence that animals have all sorts of mental abilities. Sheep can recognize faces. Chimpanzees(黑猩猩)use a variety of tools and even use weapons to hunt. And Alex the parrot became a very good talker.Thirty years after the Alex studies began, Irene was still giving him English lessons up until his recent death. For example, if Alex was hungry he could say "want grape". Alex could count to six and was learning the sounds for seven and eight. "He has to hear the words over and over before he can correctly say them." Irene said, after pronouncing "seven" for Alex a few times in a row. Alex could also tell the difference between colors, shapes, sizes, and materials (e.g. wood and metal). Before he finally died, Alex managed to say "seven".Another famous pet that proved some animals have greater mental skills was a dog called Rico. He appeared on a German TV game show in 2011. Rico knew the names of 200 different toys and easily learned the names of new ones. When Rico became famous, many other dog owners wanted to show how clever their pets were. Another dog called Betsy could understand 300 words. One theory for dogs' ability to learn a language is that they have been close companions to humans for many centuries and so their ability to understand us is constantly evolving. While animals can't do what humans do yet, some scientists believe that examples like Alex and Rico prove that evolution develops intelligence, as well as physical appearance.1.Irene wanted to find out .A.what a parrot thinks B.why a parrot can speakC.how parrots make sounds D.if parrots speak English2.Alex learnt new words by .A.singing them B.reading them C.writing them D.rehearing them 3.The article concludes that .A.our pets understand what we sayB.dogs may speak to humans one dayC.humans are related to chimpanzeesD.mental ability can evolve in animalsBIt's amazing how we grow from careless kids to responsible teens. What happens in the course that makes us responsible now? It's the seed that we sow in the beginning which grows and becomes a huge tree. As I sit here, silently thinking about my growth, I wonder over some questions which don't have an answer but it's because of such unanswerable situations that life has become a roller coaster ride.As a kid, I used to read a lot of story books. In one particular book, I read a story of a bird. From then on, that has become an integral (必不可少的) part of my life. It described a male bird which takes a lot of pain to build a nest and the female bird takes shelter in it and nourishes the baby. When the bird learns to fly, the whole family flies off to a different place leaving behind the beautiful nest for other birds to grow their family in it. It made me wonder. How could they so easily sacrifice their house built with so much effort? One night, when I was deep in sleep, I got this particular dream. I was walking miles on the endless road, totally isolated but lined with beautiful trees on the either side. Fascinated by the greenery, I marched towards it only to end up deeper and deeper into the greenery. I happened to stop upon seeing something. It was a massive, wonderful house. I fell in love with that amazing part of art. Yeah, it was indeed a piece of art with every nook and corner touched artistically and lovingly. I don't know why I felt that it was done lovingly. Maybe because, things turn out to be beautiful only when we put our love into it — just like the food prepared by mom which tastes more delicious with her love.I explored the house only to fall more in love with it. There was a sloping roof which matched with the greenery around;the large central open courtyard reminded me of the activities that might have taken place there which felt lively even now when it is completely deserted. The small water body that kept the house cool added to the beauty of the house — of course, it was all dried up now. It's really wonderful how such things add life to the spaces which otherwise just become structures. Such liveliness and happening turns the house into a home. They say 'THE HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS', but now I began to feet it. This is where my heart belongs. This is what I'm destined to do.When I woke up from the dream, I was clear about everything. I realized where that mile of walk was intending me to lead. I realized what message my dream wanted to convey me. And years later, when finally my turn of choosing my destination came, I simply closed my eyes, held that book in my hand, pressed it against my chest and relived the dream. When I opened my eyes, I was sure what to do. I decided to choose the road — less traveled. Yes, I took up architecture as my profession because this is what I am destined to do. I wanted to do the same thing that the male bird in the story did, to take pain in building a beautiful house and let others stay in it. This is my dream come true and the happiness that I gain now from this profession is indescribable. 4.When the writer read the story of the bird, he probably felt .A.upset B.confused C.amazed D.amused5.To the writer, "the seed that we sow in the beginning" (Paragraph 1) is .A.the house in his dream B.his mother's foodC.the story of the bird D.his story books6.The above passage is mainly about .A.how the writer finally becomes an honest citizenB.where the true meaning of responsibility liesC.what we need to do when we are seeking fortuneD.why the writer takes up architecture as his careerCYou may have heard of the man who decided to repair the roof of his house. To be safe, he tied a rope around his waist and threw the other end of it over the top of the house. He asked his son to tie it to something secure. The boy fastened the safety rope to the bumper of their car parked in the driveway. It seemed like a good idea at the time. But a little while later, his wife, unaware of the rope securing her husband, she started the car and drove away. Imagine what the result would be.This story, factual or not, points to a great truth. It is a truth about where we place our security; about those things to which we've tied our safety lines. What is your rope tied to? Think about it. What do you depend on to keep you from disaster? Is your rope tied to a good job? Is it tied to a relationship with somebody you rely on? Is it tied to a company or an organization?Writer Susan Taylor tells of discovering how unreliable some of our safety lines really are. She tells of lying in bed in the early hours of the morning when an earthquake struck. As her house shook, she fell out of bed and managed to go to the doorway, watching in horror as her whole house cracked down around her. Where her bed had once stood, she later discovered nothing but a pile of bricks. She lost everything —every button, every dish, her automobile, every article of clothing. Susan trembled, scared and crying, in the darkness. In the early morning she cried and called out for help.Thoroughly exhausted, she thought that maybe she should be listening for rescuers instead of crying. So she grew still and listened. In the silence around her, the only sound she heard was the beating of her own heart. It occurred to her then that at least she was still alive and, amazingly enough, unhurt. She thought about her situation. In the stillness, fear abandoned her and a feeling of indescribable peace and happiness flooded in, the likes of which she had never before known. It was an experience that was to change her life forever. In the deepest part of her being, Susan realized a remarkable truth. She realized she had nothing to fear. Amazingly, whether or not she was ever rescued, whether she ever made it out alive, she sensed she had nothing to fear. For the first time in her life she understood that her true security did not depend on those things in which she had placed her trust. It lay deep within. And also for the first time, she knew what it was to be content in all circumstances. She realized that whether she had plenty or hardly enough, somehow she would be all right. She just knew it. She later wrote, "Before the quake I appeared very successful, but my life was out of balance. I wasn't happy because I had been making money and always wanting more. My home, my job, my clothes, a relationship —I thought they were my security. It took an earthquake and losing everything I owned for me to discover that my security had been with me all along...There's a power within us that we can depend upon no matter what is happening around us."She had tied her rope to the wrong things. It took a disaster for her to understand that those things are not trustworthy. So she let go of the rope and discovered peace. She found that her true security was a power within-dependable and sure. What is your rope tied to? And what would happen if you found the courage to let go of it? 7.Why was Susan crying in the darkness?A.Because she was afraid of staying in the dark.B.Because she wanted to be heard by the rescuers.C.Because she was frightened and felt helpless.D.Because she had tied her rope to the wrong thing.8.What did Susan feel after she thought about her situation?A.She felt very peaceful.
