No continent on Earth today has such spectacular wildlife.
At its heart lies a vast tropical rainforest.
Over a million square miles of wilderness, much of it still unexplored even now.
There are more species of animals and plants in these jungles than anywhere else on the continent.
But even in this land of plenty wildlife now faces major challenges.
The forests of the Ivory Coast contain over 1,500 species of plant, but some are very difficult to get at even for one of the most intelligent of animals.
Chimpanzees.

The grass in northern India is the tallest on the planet,印度北部的草是地球上长得最高的home to some of the most impressive creatures to tread the Earth. These are the good times,现在正当好时候but in just a few months, all this fresh growth will be gone,可再过几个月这些青草就会消失and the animals will be forced to move on。
That is the way things are on grasslands across the planet. A cycle of abundance, destruction and rebirth重复着富足消亡重生的循环that affects every creature that lives here。

Narrator (voice)◎

Planet earth11Away from all land, the ocean. It covers more half of our planet. And yet, for the most part, it is beyond our reach. Much of it is virtually empty, a watery desert(水之沙漠). All life that is here is locked in the constant search to find food. A struggle to conserve precious energy in the open ocean.Ocean DeepNarratorDavid AttenboroughThe biggest of all fish, 30 tons of weight, 12meters long, a whale shark. Its huge bulk is sustained by near microscopic creatures of the sea, plankton(浮游生物). Whale sharks cruise on regular, habitual routs between the best feeding grounds. In February, that took them to this surface waters far from the coast of Venezuela. Others are already here. Bait fish have come for the same reason, to feed on the plankton. The whale shark has timed its arrival exactly right. Oddly, the tiny fish swarm(聚集) around it. They are using it as a shield. Other predatory fish(掠食性鱼类) are lurking nearby. Yellowfin tuna(黄鳍金枪鱼), they seem wary(细心谨慎的) of the giant. The shark dives, as if to escape such overcrowding. Now the tuna have a chance to attack the unprotected bait fish. But then back comes the giant. It has taken a vast mouthful of bait fish itself. Plankton, it seems, is not the only food for a whale shark. Both shark and tuna feast together. But the tuna must beware. Even they can end up in the whale shark’s stomach. Predators must grab here what they can, when they can, for such events do not last long. The dense shoals(鱼群) on which so many depend gather only when the water conditions are perfect. Many predator spend much of their time cruising the open seas, endlessly searching. Plankton-feeding rays do so, gliding with minimum effort. The oceanic whitetip shark, another energy-efficient traveler. It specializes in locating the prey in the emptiest areas of the open ocean, patrolling the top 100 meters of water. Taste in water is the equivalent of smell in the air. An oceanic whitetip is able to detect even the faintest(微弱的) trace. Small pilot fish swim with it. The shark can find prey far more easily than they can and they’ll be able to collect the scraps(碎片) of its meals. Its long, fixed pectoral fins(胸鳍) enable it to soar through the water with the least expenditure of energy. This shark has found a school of rainbow runners(香蕉鱼纺锤鲹/双带鲹). It would eat one, given the chance. But rainbow runners are swift and agile(轻快的) and not easily caught. So, it bides(等待时机) its time. There’s a chance that eventually it may spot a weakened fish that is catchable. The hunter, endlessly waiting. Excitement far from the land. A school of dolphin, 500 strong. They’ve sensed there’s food around, and they’re racing to catch up with it. The news has spread. Now a number of schools are on their way. They’re heading Azores, volcanic islands 1000 miles west of Portugal. The dolphins scan water ahead with their sonar. Th ey’re close to their target. This is it, scad mackerel(竹荚鲭). It’s difficult for the single dolphin to catch the fish. To avoid wasting energy, they work as a group. They drive the fish upwards, trapping them against the surface. And there, other predators await them. Cory shearwaters(猛蒦huo第四声,搜狗拼音找不到这个字). They’re waiting for the dolphin to drive the preycloser to the surface. Now the shearwaters can dive on them, descending to 20 meters or more. And the dolphins block the bait ball’s retreat. The dolphins leave as soon as they’ve had their fills. And at last, the mackerel sink below the diving range of the birds. As the sun disappears, a profound change take place in the ocean. Deep water plankton start to rise from the depth, and another hungry army prepare to receive it. Every night, whenever conditions are right, countless millions of creatures from the deep migrate to the surface seeking food. A baby sailfish, 15 centimeters long, snaps up every in its path(along the road). In three year’s time, it will be one of the ocean’s most formidable(令人敬畏的) hunters, weighing 60 Kilos. Just now, however, it’s very vulnerable(易受攻击的). These manta rays(蝠鲼) are giants. Eight meters across and weighing over two tons. The blade-like(刀片) projections(突起物) on either side of the head help to steer(引导) the plankton into manta’s mouth. Dawn returns and plankton sinks back into the depths. If we’re to follow, we must use a submarine. As we descend into the darkness, the pressure builds, the temperature falls. Below 500 meters, new mysterious animals appear. Their bizarre(奇怪的) shapes help them to remain suspended(悬浮的) in the darkness. Some resemble(与……相像,类似于)creatures familiar from shallow waters. Others defy(不服从) classification. All around, organic particles drift downwards. Marine snow, detritus(碎屑) from the creatures swarming in the sunlit waters above. The snow is food for many animals here, like the sea spider, a small relative of shrimps and crabs. Those strange leg-like appendages(附属物) are feathered to stop it from sinking. They can also enmesh(使陷入(网中)) marine snow, which it wipes(擦) carefully into its jaws(下巴). A sawtooth eel(锯齿鳗、带鱼又叫秋刀鱼) hangs upright and motionless. Gazing (凝视)ever upwards, it watches for prey silhouetted against the faint glimmerings of light from the surface. Days may pass before the prey swim close enough for it to strike. Farther down still, the blackness is complete. No vestige(残余部分) of sunlight can penetrate as far as this. Food is very scarce(缺乏的), and nothing can afford to waste any energy.A dumbo(蠢人) octopus(章鱼) (小飞象章鱼)simply flaps(轻拍;振翅而飞) a fin(鳍). No need for the jet propulsion(喷射水流反作用力) used by its shallow waters relatives above. The weirdest(怪诞的,超自然的;奇怪的,奇异的) in this world of strange, vampyroteuthis(幽灵蛸、吸血鬼乌贼), the vampire(吸血鬼) squid(乌贼,墨鱼;鱿鱼) from the hell. Disturb it and it only retreat a little distance. Go after it and it has a special defence(防卫). To see what it does, you must switch off the light. The vampire squid has lights of its own. Bioluminescent bacteria(发光微生物) shine from pockets on its arms(足囊) to confuse its predators. Are those eyes? In fact, they’re spots at its mantle(斗篷). A bite there would leave the head unscathed(未受损伤的;未受伤害的). The threat diminishes(变小或减少) and vampyroteuthis disappears into the blackness. At last, the sea floor. Over two miles down, the pressure here is 300 times that at the surface. It takes several months for marine snow to drift down as far as this. As you travel away from the rocky margins(边缘) of continents, an immense(极大的,巨大的;浩瀚的,无边际的) plain stretches ahead. It extends(stretch和extend可以换用) for thousands of miles, gradually sinking downwards. There’re faint trails in the ooze(软泥), signs that even here, there’s life. These are what made some of them. Sea urchins(海胆) sifting(筛分,filt) the accumulating drifts. Shrimps, standing on elegant tiptoe, fastidiously(挑剔的;讲究的;苛求的) select the particles that appeals to them. But in the deep ocean ,as anywhere else, if there’s grazers(食草动物), there’re hunters.A monk fish(安康鱼), almost indistinguishable from the sand on which it lies. Why waste energy chasing around if you can attract prey toward you with a lure. Maybe that one was a bit big. The monkfish can wait for days , if necessary, until the right-sized meal turns up. Scavengers(捡破烂的人,清扫工;食腐动物), on the other hand, have to move around to find their food. Crabs can detect the faintest taste in the water and that help them to locate the latest body(corpse, cadaver, remain, carcass) to drift down from the above. Eels are already feeding on thecorpse. Isopods(等脚类的动物), like giant marine woodlice(巨型海虱) a third of a meter long, are ripping into the rotten flesh. Over the next few hours, there’ll be frenzied(慌乱的,狂热的) competition between scavengers of all kinds to grab a share. Just occasionally, there’s a giganticbonanza(财源;意想不到的幸运;富矿脉). The remains of a sperm(精子;精液;鲸蜡油ovum,卵子) whale. It died five months or so ago. There’s little left but fatty blubber(鲸脂;鲸油;啜泣;哽咽) clinging(附着于,紧贴link to ) to its bones. Its flesh has nourished(滋养,施肥于;抚养,fertilize) life for miles around. But now, the feast is almost over. Spider crabs, a meter cross, still pick at the last putrid(腐化的;有毒的;已腐烂的rotten, erupt, corrupt) remains. A weeks more, nothing will be left but bare(光秃秃的) bones. The crabs will have to fast(vi.
