Taiyuan University of Technology (henceforth, TUT) is one of the major universities in Shanxi Province and is the only one in the province that has been nominated as one of the top 100 universities by a national higher education program—“Project 211”. Its history can be traced all the way back to the Western Learning School of Shanxi Grand Academy (1902), which is one of the three earliest state-run universities in China and one of five key universities under construction in Central China.For more than one century, TUT has been developing rapidly and constantly based on the traditional spirit of “fighting for the best, creating the originality, and answering the challenge”, and has developed an integrated talent cultivating mode at different levels. So far, it has over 160,000 graduates devoted to the development of the nation and society, and is ranked as “Outstanding Unit of Universities and Colleges in Undergraduate Education”, “Outstanding Unit in the National Cultural and Ideological Progress”, and “National May First Labor Award”.TUT is recruiting students from 31 provinces, cities, and autonomous regions. It has 67 bachelor's degree program s, 113 master’s degree programs, 38 doctorate programs, 6 post-doctor research centers, 4 Professional Master's Degree Authorization Centers, Engineering Master's Degree Authorization Centers covering 20 fields in 10 Colleges and Universities, 3 national key disciplines, 3 State-Level Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, 4 Key Laboratories of the Education Ministry of China, 5 National Characteristic Professional-Level Stations, 13 Key Subjects of Shanxi, 5 Key Laboratories of Shanxi, 10 Engineering Research Centers of Shanxi, 3 Excellent Teaching Teams of Shanxi, 8 Teaching Demonstration Centers of Shanxi, 3 Talent Cultivation Innovation Experimental Spots in Shanxi Province, 5 Graduate Education Innovation Centers in Shanxi Province, 16 Provincial Brand Specialties, 23 Provincial Fine-Selected Courses and so on. In addition, TUT also has the Key Laboratory Cultivation Base of the Ministry and Province, State-Level Teaching Team, National Fine-Selected Course, National Bilingual Teaching Demonstration Course, and Engineering Research Center of Ministry of Education.Presently, there are 1,941 full-time teachers including over 1,140 professors and associate professors, 117 doctoral tutors and 3 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 National Outstanding Specialists in Technology, 2 China Youth Science and Technology Prize recipients, 2 members in the Center of Science and Technology of Ministry of Education, 4 recipients of the Fund for DistinguishedYoung Scholars of China, 5 members of “Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talents Project in the New Century”, 6 members of the “New Century Excellent Talent of Ministry of Education”, 10 “Central Contact Senior Experts”, 2 doctorial candidates winning the awards of “Top 100 Doctoral Thesis”, 18 individuals on the “New Century Academic Technology Pioneers—333 Talents Project”, 4 teachers of “Shanxi Technology Hero”, 11 “Provincial Outstanding Experts”, 30 “Provincial Teaching Masters”, 61 “Shanxi Provincial Committee Contact Senior Experts” , 125 professors enjoying the “Special Government Allowance”, and over 140 famous scholars both at home and abroad appointed as visiting professors, emeritus professors, or part-time professors. It now also has national teaching masters and Changjiang scholars.TUT is both solid in its scientific research and technological development and motivated in basic applied research. This university has undertaken twice in a row the national “973” Research Project as the first scientist unit, and has undertaken 539 national projects including the national “863” High-Tech Project and others, obtaining 395 prizes for scientific research and 132 prizes for teaching achievements at both national and provincial levels. Guided by the precept of implement the strategy of rejuvenating China through science and technology TUT has made a great contribution to the development and construction of the local economy by providing technology supports and cultivating talents. Over the past years, in either direct or indirect ways, TUT has signed long-term cooperation agreements with over 400 enterprises and companies from scores of regions and cities, and consequently has helped the local government and enterprises make 3 billion (3,000,000,000) RMB through the transformation of high-tech project results.With “Pursue Practicality, Create Originality, Serve Locality” as its motto, and constantly following the policy of the characteristic education of beinghuman-centered, having mental & physical education as the basis, bearing moral fiber and wisdom education, and accomplishing all-round development”, TUT has contributed a great deal to the development and prosperity of the country and society in the past century, and has achieved substantial success in culture and sports competitions of all sorts as well. It has got excellent results twice in a row in Shanxi “Booming Jin Challenge Cup”. Besides, TUT men basketball team is ranked as “King of Northwest” and has been the winner of the CUBA in northwest division for 11 times. It is the only team that can make it to enter the national top 8 of CUBA games every time. What’s more, TUT women basketball team, women volleyball team, men football team, and athletes on field and track events, martial arts as well as other games have ever entered the finals of the national games, and obtained good results.In the 15th Doha Asian Games, Yuan Xiaochao, one of TUT students, won “Man ChangQuan All-Round Champion” title, bringing a big glory to Shanxi Province and Taiyuan University of Technology.With the solid foundation in both teaching and research, TUT has never stopped making efforts to turn itself into an internationalized university by enrolling students from all over the world, sending its students to the universities in other countries and running joint-education programs with the colleges and universities from overseas. TUT is in cooperation with countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, Russia, France, Italy, Japan and others. It also has established 3 Confucius Institutes abroad.
