AThere are desert plants which survive the dry season in the form of inactive seeds. There are also desert insects which survive as inactive larvae (幼虫). In addition, difficult as it is to believe, there are desert fish which can survive through years of drought (干旱) in the form of inactive eggs. These are the shrimps (虾) that live in the Mojave Desert, an extremely dry place in the southwest of the United States where shade temperatures of over 50℃ are often recorded. The eggs of the Mojave shrimps look like grains of sand both in size and appearance. When enough spring rain falls to form a lake, once every two to five years, these eggs hatch. Then the water is soon filled with millions of tiny shrimps about a millimeter long which feed on tiny plant and animal organisms (有机物)which also grow in the temporary desert lake. Within a week, the shrimps grow from their original 1 millimeter to a length of about 1.5 centimeters.Throughout the time that the shrimps are rapidly maturing, the water in the lake equally rapidly evaporates(蒸发). Therefore, for the shrimps it is a race against time. By the twelfth day, however, when they are about 3 centimeters long, hundreds of tiny eggs form on the underbodies of the females. Usually by this time, all that remains of the lake is a large, muddy patch of wet soil. On the 13th day, the shrimps lay their eggs in the mud. Then, having ensured that their species will survive, the shrimps die asthe last of the water evaporates. If enough rain falls the next year to form another lake, the eggs hatch, and once again the shrimps pass rapidly through their cycle of growth, adulthood, egg-laying, and death. Some years there is not enough rain to form a lake: in this case, the eggs will remain dormant for another year, or even longer if necessary.56. Part of this is a perception (认知) problem.Generally, people in rich countries have more free time than they used to.This is particularly true in Europe, but even in America free time has been inching up.Women's paid work has risen a lot over this period, but their time in unpaid work, like cooking and cleaning, has fallen even more significantly, thanksin part to dishwashers, washing machines and microwaves, and also to the fact that men shift themselves a little more around the house than they used to.The problem, then, is less how much time people have than how they see it.Ever since a clock was first used at a workplace to record labor hours in the 18th century, time has been understood in relation to money.Once hours are financially quantified(量化), people worry more about wasting, but tend to save or use them more profitably. When economies grow and incomes rise, everyone's time becomes more valuable. And the more valuable something becomes, the rarer it seems.Once seeing their time in terms of money, people often grow stingy with the former to maximize the latter.Workers who are paid by the hour volunteer less of their time and tend to feel more upset when they are not working. The relationship between time, money and anxiety is something Gary Becker noticed in America's post-war boom years."If anything, time is used more carefully today than a century ago," he noted in 1965.He found that when people are paid more to work, they tend to work longer hours, because working becomes a more profitable use of time.So the rising value of work time puts pressure on all time.Leisure time starts to seem more stressful, as people are forced to use it wisely or not at all.63.Women's time in unpaid work has fallen partly because ______.A.men's ability to support a family has been improvedB.men's involvement in housework has increasedC.women's leisure time was taken up by heavy houseworkD.women become more skilled at household equipment64.From the second paragraph, we learn that ______.bor hours were recorded with a clockB.people haven't realized the value of timeC.more work hours bring in more moneyD.The rise of incomes makes time less valuable65.The underlined phrase grow stingy with can probably be replaced by "______".A.refuses to delayB.intend to killC.try to accumulateD.hesitate to spend66.According to Gary Becker, what causes people feel anxious about time?A.The wrong way of time being spent.B.People's willingness to work hard.C.The increasing value of work time.D.More and more leisure time.DImagine you’ve had a fight with your best friend. It’s a stupid fight, something you will both get over. But right now you are upset. When you walk in the door, your mom asks what’s wrong. How are you mostly likely to respond?Have a long, comforting talk about it with her. Or head to the fridge for the ice cream. But can that really help you feel better — or just make you feel sickeningly full?Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of to satisfy hunger. We’ve all been there, finishing a whole bag of chips or eating cookie after cookie while preparing for a coming exam. But when done a lot — especially without realizing it — emotional eating can affect weight, health, and well-being.One of the biggest beliefs about emotional eating is thatit’s caused by negative feelings. Yes,people often turn to food when they’re stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious, or bored. Nevertheless, emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine’s Day or the celebration of a holiday feast. More often, though,it’s the countless little daily stresses that cause someone to seek comfort or relaxation in food.We all have our own comfort foods. Amazingly, they may vary according to moods and sex. One study found that happy people seem to want to eat things like pizza, while sad people prefer ice cream and cookies. Bored people desire salty, fragile things, like chips. Girls go for chocolate and ice cream. This brings up a curious question:Does no one take comfort in carrots and cabbages?Researchers are looking into that, too. What they’re finding is that high-fat foods, like ice cream, may activate certain chemicals in the body that create a sense of contentment and fulfillment, which may actually make you reach for these foods again when feeling upset. We’re all emotional eaters to some extent. But for some people, emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious problems such as weight gain.Managing emotional eating means finding other ways to deal with the situations and feelings that make someone turn to food. For example,do you come home from school each day and automatically head to the kitchen?Stop and ask yourself, “Am I really hungry?” Are you having difficulty concentrating? If these signs point to hunger, choose something light and healthy to take the edge off until dinner.67. The first two paragraphs are designed to _______.A. put forward the idea of emotional eatingB. stress theimportance of friendshipC. explain the function of eating an ice creamD. offer advice on how to comfort an annoyed child68. People turn to emotional eating because _______.A. they benefit a lot from eatingB. they have a strong desire for foodC. they want to seek comfort or relaxationD. they suffer from weight problems69. Which of the following may not serve as comfort food?A. Chips.B. Carrots.C. Cookies.D. Pizzas.70. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?A. Eat whenever you can’t conc entrate.B. It is natural to feel hungry after school.C. It’s hard to tell physical hunger from mental hunger.D. There are ways to break the cycle of emotional eating.EIt’s amazing how we grow from careless kids to responsible teens. What happens in the course that makes us responsible now? It’s the seed that we sow in the beginning which grows and becomes a huge tree. As I sit here, silently thinking about my growth, I wonder over some questions which don’t have an answer but it’s because of such unans werable situations that life has become a roller coaster ride.As a kid, I used to read a lot of story books. In one particular book, I read a story of a bird. From then on, that has become an integral (必不可少的) part of my life. It described a male bird which takes a lot of pain to build a nest and the female bird takes shelter in it and nourishes the baby. When the bird learns to fly, the whole family flies off to a different place leaving behind the beautiful nest for other birds to grow their family in it. It mademe wonder. How could they so easily sacrifice their house built with so much effort? One night, when I was deep in sleep, I got this particular dream. I was walking miles on the endless road, totally isolated but lined with beautiful trees on either side. Fascinated by the greenery, I marched towards it only to end up deeper and deeper into the greenery. I happened to stop upon seeing something. It was a massive, wonderful house. I fell in love with that amazing part of art. Yeah, it was indeed a piece of art with every corner touched artistically and lovingly. I don’t know why I felt that it was done lovingly. Maybe because, things turn out to be beautiful only when we put our love into it — just like the food prepared by mom which tastes more delicious with her love.I explored the house only to fall more in love with it. There was a sloping roof which matched with the greenery around; the large central open courtyard reminded me of the activities that might have taken place there which felt lively even now when it is completely deserted. The small water body that kept the house cool added to the beauty of the house — of course, it was all dried up now. It’s really wonderful how such things add life to the spaces which otherwise just become structures. Such liveliness and happening turns the house into a home. They say ‘THE HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS’, but now I began to feel it. This is where my heart belongs. This is what I’m destined to do.When I woke up from the dream, I was clear about everything. I realized where that mile of walk was intending me to lead. I realized what message my dream wanted to convey me. And years later, when finally my turn of choosing my destination came, I simply closed my eyes, held that book in my hand, pressed it against my chest and relived the dream. When I opened my eyes, I was sure what to do. I decided to choose the road — less traveled. Yes, I took up architecture as my profession because this is what I am destined to do. I wanted to do the same thing that the male bird in the story did, to take pain in building a beautiful house and let others stay in it. This is my dream come true and the happiness that I gain now from this profession is indescribable.71. When the writer read the story of the bird, he probably felt _______.A. upsetB. confusedC. amazedD. amused72. To the writer, “the seed that we sow in the beginning” (Paragraph 1) is _______.A. the story of the birdB. his mother’s foodC. the house in his dreamD. his story books 73. Mom’s food always tastes better because _______.A. mom cooks with her loveB. we are so familiar with mom’s foodC. moms are better cooks than fathersD. mom is experienced in cooking74. In the writer’s dream, what part of the house attracted him most?A. The greenery surrounding the house.B. The body of water that keeps the house cool.C. The liveliness he sensed around the house.D. The fact that the house was very large.75. The above passage is mainly about _______.A. how the writer finally becomes an honest citizenB. where the true meaning of responsibility liesC. what we need to do when we are seeking fortuneD. why the writer takes up architecture as his career第二卷注意事项:用0.5毫米黑色签字笔在答题卡上作答。

pulled a girl's hair on the school bus to get her attention. As a result,I was repeatedly sent to the office of the principal(校长).Although I hated going there,I did not hate the principal,Mr.Ratcliff.Mr.Ratcliff was a kind, elderly man. When he spanked(打屁股)me for putting some ants into aclassmate's pencil box,it didn't hurt at all,but it did hurt my feelings.I thought so much of him andmoments like that seemed to prove I was hopelessly bad. When I got called to Mr.Ratcliff's office for the sixth time,I had no idea what I had done.I felt disappointed as I walked down there.I went into his office, sat down, and looked at the floor. Then he said the last thing I expected to hear:"Kevin,I've heard you've been behaving really well lately.I want you to know how proud I am of you,and I just called you down to my office to give you a peppermint.""Really?"I was surprised."Yes.Now you can take that peppermint and go back to class."I carried the peppermint with me as if it was a gold coin. When I got into my classroom,I bragged (吹嘘)to my classmates about my turnaround, excitedly.I wasn't so bad after all.Mr.Ratcliff was really kind.He made me realize that I was just a kid who you spend in movietheaters,at amusement parks,at shopping malls,or at convenience stores? When you add it all up,you will probably see you spend a lot of your life consuming(消费)things.Consuming products is not necessarily bad. However,if we spend too much time doing it,we should look at it carefully.Imagine that you have a week off from school. You don't have to go to class. However,in this week, you cannot spend any money﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣no shopping,no movies,no eating out.How would you spend your time? What things would bring you happiness?Perhaps you would take a walk with your best friend.Perhaps you would help a child read.Or you might spend time with your family. When we look back,it is likely that non﹣consuming experiences like these will be our most importantmemories. Why?Non﹣consuming activities are active, not passive. They don't come in a package. You make the experience yourself. For example, each person who reads to a child will have a different experience. The experience changes with the reader, the child, and the book.Similarly, when you have a conversation with a friend, you are actively creating an experience. The conversation that you have with your friend cannot be experienced or recreated by anyone else. However,if you watch a movie with a friend, you will each have a package experience. It requires no action and little interaction between the two of you.The environment we live in encourages us to have packaged experiences. We feel that we must consume because we believe that buying is doing. However,we can start a personal revolution (变革)against consumerism. How?By consuming less.We can ask ourselves what experiences bring us the greatest satisfaction. Then we can organize our lives so that we have more of those kinds of experiences.49.If consuming products takes too much time,we should.A.spend less moneyB.think about it carefullyC.organize our thingsD.go to convenience stores50.According to the passage, the writer believes that.A.we can say no to consumerism by consuming lessB.buying things can bring us the greatest satisfactionC.the environment seldom influences our shopping choicesD.consuming experiences will be our most important memories51.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?A.To introduce some ways of enjoying our spare time.B.To encourage people to have more active experiences.C.To explain reasons behind people's shopping behavior.D.To share his personal experience in consuming products.52.Say you're sitting around with some friends playing video games and someone mentions a game that happens to be one of your favorites."Oh,that game's easy.So not worth the time,"one of your friends says. The others agree.Although you enjoy the game quite a lot,not wanting to argue with them, you go along with the crowd. You have just experienced what is commonly referred to as peer pressure(同伴压力),also called peerinfluence. You will adopt a certain type of behavior, dress,or attitude in order to be accepted as part of a group of your"peers".As a teen, you are likely to have experienced the effect of peer pressure in a number of different areas. We are all influenced by our peers at any age.For teens,as school and other activities take you awayfrom home, you may spend more time with your friends than with your family. As you become moreindependent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life.According to Dr.Casey from Cornell University, teens are very quick and accurate in making decisionson their own and in situations where they have time to think. However, when they make decisions in theheat of the moment or in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors like peers. In arecent study, teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching.Theresearchers discovered that the number of risks teens took more than doubled when their friends werewatching, compared with when they played alone. This shows that teens may find it more difficult to control risky behavior when their friends are around,or in situations where they are extremely angry.Just as people can influence us to make unwise choices, they can also influence us to make good ones.A teen might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it,or get good grades because his or her friends think getting good grades is important. In fact, friends often encourage each other to study,or try out for sports. While we are always influenced by those around us,the decision to act or not is up to us.So when itcomes to decision making, the choice is up to you.52.According to the passage,Dr.Casey probably agrees that teens.A.like to play driving games with their friendsB.prefer situations where they have time to thinkC.may take more risks when their friends are aroundD.are slow in making decisions when they are on their own53.The words"in the heat of the moment"in Paragraph 4probably mean"".A.when teens avoid possible risksB.when teens trust their judgmentC.when teens lose control over their angerD.when teens give consideration to situations54.What can we learn from the passage?A.Teens are eager to be different from their peers.B.Peer pressure has effects on both teens and adults.C.Peer pressure does more harm than good to teens.D.Tees think it challenging to get good grades at school.55.Which of the following would be the best or six of the 50people in a village might be named William, and it was easy to get confused. But in the Middle Ages, people found a way to describe each person exactly. If there were four Williams in one village, one might be referred to as William the son of John.A second might be called William from the hill.A third,William the blacksmith(铁匠).And a fourth,William the brown haired. In conversation, people might refer to the four Williams as William John's son,William hill,William smith, and William brown. It was 300or 400years before the extra (附加的)names gradually developed into last names, orsurnames. They were passed on from generation to generation.By the 1300s,Robert,the son of Williamsmith, had the name Robert smith, even if he was not a blacksmith like his father. As the last name became widely accepted, the first letter was capitalized,as in Robert Smith.By the 15th century, most people of the upper and middle classes had surnames. Many surnames were based on father﹣son relations. The"son of"part was added to the father's firstname, like Johnson, meaning John's son.Sometimes it was shortened to just"s",as in Jones or Evans.Surnames like Hill described the place where a person lived. They are the most common type of surname.A third kind of surname was based on a person's job.Forester was someone wholooked after the forest. In the Middle Ages, occupation names such as Baker,Carpenter, and Miller became common. The fourth kind of surname was nickname(绰号).A man whose surname was Bear might be as fierce as a bear.Have you ever wondered why some surnames are so common? The most common surname in the English language is Smith.Being able to make metals(金属)into tools was an important skill in the Middle Ages, and many people were trained as blacksmiths. The most common American surnames are Smith,Johnson,William and Brown.61.Where do many American names come from?62.When did people find a way to describe each person exactly?63.How long did it take for extra
