Lugu Lake泸沽湖

You know it’s really tough for me to have you guys experience the real “Lugu Lake” if you have never got the chance to be there. Coz frankly speaking, I have to say, no matter how hard I shall try, the secret of this last matriarchal society could never be unveiled perfectly from the mystery. Let alone, the culture and the living style of the locals are gone with the wind day and night. Besides, you have been chosen such a story-teller like me. (I’m joking) But seriously, once you start to talk about Lugu Lake, the language goes into faint and even the pictures stand only what the eyes see. The core value behind this unique culture may hardly be touched until all of us reach the ultimate source of our life. Since I realized this, I think the strong feeling here (in the bottom of my heart) must be shared with those who are eager to look for the truth of life. However, unfortunately, if you fail to picture this wonderland during the next an hour, my expression could be the only one to be blamed. Meanwhile, please try the purest and the most romantic words you ever had to rebuild this paradise with your own imagination. Never hesitate to do so for there is no such a place like Lugu Lake could exist outside the boundary of our logic. If so, it must be called Lugu Lake, which is a real place in this fake world.Part 1 SpringThree years ago, I bumped along the track from the early morning to the dusk. After crossing the endless twists and turns, I was stunned by the first sight. It’s a whole new world with azure sky and cotton clouds. The water in the lake is as blue as the sapphire. You feel like an infant and being transparency after you scoop up some water with you hands. The peaks of some unknown snow mountains stay far away while its arms are dotted with the live stocks. The lake is an alpine one at an elevation of 2690 meters with max visibility of 12meters. Its average depth is around 40 meters while the deepest reaches about 90. Covering an area of 52 square kilometers, this plateau lake is in the shape of a horse’s hoof. Dotted over the crystal Lake are 5 small islands, 3 belong to the territory of Yunnan and the rest to that of Sichuan. In Qing Dynasty about 1920, Rock Joseph, an American explorer and scientist, once made friends with the chieftain and settled down for quite a long time on the island here, which now is called the rock island. I could still remember the first impression came to my mind at the moment when I took a bird’s view of the lake. It’s a strange world to me but still feel a bit familiar as the picture once appeared in the dream. As the bible says:To me, Lugu Lake is an Eden just to be created. To her, it’s just the coming of each spring. The people live with Lugu Lake, they call themselves nari.Nari, in mandarin, we say mosuo. Mosuo people live in a matriarchal society which has a huge difference with the main stream society like we have today. The elder female, commonly known as the grandmother, is in charge of the running of the whole family in its daily life. The female is predominant and is therefore theleader. They operate production and management. In fact, they have the last word at home. All the females are the pillars of a family. They are natural beauties with joy and health. They’re tolerant, easily satisfied, and independent. Under the roof of the family, there is no violence, hatred, and even quarrels, especially between the female members. Sometimes it’s really unbelievable that jealousy can hardly find the place to hide itself. Yes, there is no necessary. Love, care and the warm already make full use of each corner of the family and it’s the women become the soul of it.It’s in this family. It’s in the Spring of Lugu Lake. A girl named Zhaxima are waiting for the first ceremony in her life. It’s the first day of the Chinese spring festival. And she is in the age of 13. The water in the lamp-dish is waiting for her to be renewed for the last time since only the virgin could do so. Today is the rite of passage for Zhaxima. After breakfast, everyone includeing the neighbors, come to join the ceremony holding beside the fireplace. Zhaxima is asked to stand in front of the pillar. Lamas are invited to have the prayers. There are two pillars in the grandma-house where is the center of the family. Two pillars represent females and males. They came from the same tree. The lower part is for the females which stand for the fundamental source of life. Zhaxima is standing in front of the female one. At that moment, all the guests and family members are staying quietly as where they are. At that moment, all the cattle and sheep are staying silently as where they are. At that moment, even there are no clouds above the village. At that moment, the mountains far away are shining the holy bright. Everything just shows the sign of good luck. After wearing a cloth with golden lace, Zhaxima is put on the skirt with a hundred pleats and a woolen belt with ancient decors. It’s the gift started to prepare by her mother from the day when Zhaxima came to the world. After finishing the making-up, Zhaxima is told the very very ancient story although the story has been told for the endless time from generations to generations. And the story doesn’t get change at all. It says:Long long ago, the ancestors lived together with goose, duck, dog and other live stocks. But no one has a regular life span. The God decided to set a fixed life span to anyone who gets the response to his announcement and he will start from the age of 1000. After the midnight, only the goose kept awake and got the age of 1000 when the God had his first call. And then, the duck answered the second call and got the age of 100. When the God had his third call with the age of 60, the dog followed. Our ancestor didn’t get awake until the God called the age of 13. Obviously, 13years is too short for anyone to do anything. Under the permission of the God, the ancestor wanted to negotiate with the dog. The dog agreed to the deal with the terms of 3 meals a day and no more beating. From then on, we mousuo get the age of 60 and have a ceremony at the age of 13 as the memory of the God and the dog’s generosity. As soon as the story finished, mother called the dog in and had Zhaxima feed the dog for the gratitude. Then after this, Zhaxima kneels down to the ancestor, the kitchen God and the elders. Daba, the priest of their local religion, start to sing:The golden lamps from the ancestor have been lit,The lamps are filled with the butter like the pure snow.In the holy lights of the lamps,A sweet girl has grown up.Only on the field cultivated by the ancestors,Comes the male as tall and straight as a pine tree.Only in the homeland inherited from the grandma,Comes the female as pretty as a flower.…………Part 2 SummerIt is true that Zhaxima started to bloom after that spring. It’s the summer after 3 years; Zhaxima moved out of the grandma house and had her own room like every Mosuo girl in her age. The vista of the lake changes constantly throughout the day in summer just like the moods of any adolescents in their blooming years. Yet, the water of the lake is always clean and limpid, with different shades of colors. If you stay at the port Luowa to wait for the sun rise, you’ll see the morning mist mixed with the light of the rising sun give the lake a soft grey glow. Keep walking along with the pathway on the dragon mountain at the right side of the port, soon you’ll find the lake downside the cliff become sapphire blue with the help of the pure sky. I always quite enjoy going for a walk with the silent bays embedded in the arms of the mountains. Only the sounds of the winds and tides as well as the breath of yourself companied with the footsteps will remind you to listen to the voice from your heart. The noise disturbs you all the time disappears and the path will lead you the way to the Zhao’s bay. The lake has a jade green there with the hills throwing shadows onto the water. When the sun sinks, the orange glow spreading in the sky together with the pig trough boats makes it an amazing landscape painting to those who sit beside the lake shore. Perhaps Zhaxima and Sula are one of them in this summer twilight. After a day’s farm work, they’re having some snacks with the fire. Sula couldn’t help singing when Zhaxioma were collecting the firewood around the bay. The song goes:The flowers on the mountains are blooming with their own fragrance. The bees are keen on looking for the one with the most attraction.Zhaxima pretended not hearing the song floating in the air but the more she wanted to ignore, the stronger she had the desire to sing. It’s just too much suffered to shut the month in the summer of that year. She sang to him:The flower only blooms for the admirer. It goes in vain if it blooms without bees. The flower only blooms in the season of now.If you are the one please don’t hesitate any more. This gonna to be the first time Zhaxima sings to a male. She kept facing on theground as if the song came alone by itself. Nevertheless, the song is spreading its wings, carrying the soul to the bottom of Sula’s heart. In the Mosuo villages on the shore of the Lugu Lake, the Mosuos are now still keeping the AXIA marriage by which means the males don’t get married and the females are not to be married off. Men and women are not bound by wedlock. Each of them live at their mother’s home respectively. Males work for their own family during the day and spend the night at the females’ blooming house.Kids are under the care of their maternal families and got the surname from their mums. Males do not live with the kids since they have to raise their sisters’ children as the role of a father. There are no poors or riches when talking about love in Lugu Lake. Once the couples fall in love, they call each other AXIA and love could be the only thing between the relations. When love comes, they devote entirely. When love leaves, they separate at wills in a friendly way.Sula and Zhaxima embraced tenderly on the shore of the Zhaos bay at the dusk at that night. But it was a year later, Sula made up his mind to knock at her door. The door did not open directly as Zhaxima asked:The stranger should find the stream if he feels thirsty,The stranger should get to the fire if he is hungry,I have nothing for the stranger and you must have knocked at the wrong door. Sula had the response:Sula is not thirsty and Sula is not hungry.Sula won’t get the wrong door coz you’re the one always in my heart. You are not the one who loves me. If so, you won’t make me keep waiting for the whole year long, replied Zhaxima. Then Sula said:It was the flooding river without a bridge that kept me from being your arms all of the nights. And I won’t let my honey suffer further more so I swam through the frozen river without any fear and hesitation.Eventually, Zhaxima opened the door. They stood there hugging tightly and then they went to the bed. They laid there hugging tightly and then with their birthday suit. They were just hugging tightly until they felt a little tired. They started to talk when the first ray of the sun appeared.Sula said: I have decided to join the caravan with my uncle. I have to go to Lijiang this morning.Zhaxima was just hugging Sula tightly without saying anything.Sula said: My uncle told me that to be a member of the horse caravan is a job with respect. I have 3 horses and I’m sure I could be back with everything you like. Zhaxima was just hugging Sula tightly without saying anything.Sula said: It has been no one in the village spending some more than 15 days on the tough and rugged mountain path and finally reach Lijiang.Zhaxima was just hugging Sula tightly without saying anything.Sula said: Being a member of the horse caravan, you can travel all over theplaces and even the tobacco they smoke is from a country called India. Zhaxima was just hugging Sula tightly without saying anything.Sula said: Zhaxima, to be frank, I know I have chosen the way to separate from you and have to run the risk for the rest of the months. I also heard that it’s not easy to survive through the way with all kinds of dangers ahead.Zhaxima was just hugging Sula tightly without saying anything.Sula continued: But I have made up the mind. I am already strong enough to take the responsibility of my family. And the wooden house in the yard is so much shabby that I am supposed to renew it after I earn the money.Zhaxima was hugging Sula tightly with her tears soaking his entire chest already. Sula promised Zhaxima: I shall be back with a package of sugar just for you. Zhaxima was hugging Sula tightly and just whispered:You are mine and I’m yours. The rooster was crowing and the sun was climbing up.Wait for me are the last words Zhaxima heard from Sula.It should be the summer of several decades ago when Sula left Zhaxima, walked out of Lugu Lake and reached the end of the world. At that time, either the horse caravan could come back as the hero, or vanish forever as a legend. Sula choose the later one and never came back afterwards.Zhaxima was in her 17 at that year and even her door was constantly knocked at the nights as usual. But what she kept is always waiting.Part 3 FallZhaxima has been waiting for 8 years after that summer. Among these years of every autumn, on the lunar July of the 25th, all the Mosuos from the villages launch a long march on foot to every preying site along with the whole lake and the mountains. This pilgrimage came from the imported religion called Tibetan Buddhism which gradually worked together with the original one called Daba peacefully in the long term of developing. Having the commons of believing that everything has spirits and the same obscure relations with Bon, they created the very unique phenomenon, that is, the amazing co-existence of two different religions in the same area while being worshiped by the same group of people. Daba is a religion with more primitive elements compared with the one we believe in today. Its symbols and the epic scripture have the record of the long migration in Mosuo’s history. Although Mosuo is not regarded as an independent nation in the minority of China, they always treat themselves as the successors of the Mongols. It’s said that once they recorded their characters on the pig skins in the ancient times. It’s the famine that had the pig skins eaten by the starving Daba which eventually formed the current situation of today’s culture. Their spoken language became the only hint to guide the dying one the way when returning to the homeland where the ancestors came from.Zhaxima didn’t know her Sula had already stayed with their ancestors in the past few years. On July the 25th of each lunar year, you could see a lonely figure murmuring among the crowds in every preying site. I’m sure it must be her. It hasbeen 8 years and by the time Zhaxima was 25. On the day of July the 25th in this autumn, Zhaxima set out for the pilgrimage as each time she did during these 8 years. She was carrying a bottle of butter, a piece of cured meat and perhaps a bag of buns. In the mist of early morning, she joined the flocks at Port Luowa, having fare well to the Princess Island and the silent pig trough boats. They had a hiking on the dragon mountain covering with the sublime green which always leads them to the first praying site. It’s the bay of Goddess located at the opposite of the holy Gemu mountain. The locals worship it as their Goddess Gemu. Zhaxima preyed for the fortune and good luck for everyone of the family, especially for the coming days to butcher the pigs. Mosuo have the tradition to make the whole pig cured like the mummy and preserve the meat for the later days. Besides, she also preyed for the back of Sula. The 8 years separation doesn’t stop her prayers and the path alongside the lake always leads them to the cliff under which is the source of the lake. It was down side the pagoda. Zhaxima recognized that Sula was standing among the Lamas. She was shouting his name. And her voice was even louder than the voice of chanting but no one brought her the response. She found him in the dark red and calling his name again and again. Some of the Lamas raised their heads looking at her with the confused expression. And so did the one she called Sula. Zhaxima was gazing at him and he was also gazing at her but without stopping chanting with his eyes full of puzzle. Tears burst out from her eyes coz she knows Sula’s eyes could never be like that. They had their second meet at the next praying site opposite the Rock Island. Zhaxima came close to the Lama carefully and whispered Sula. The Lama turned with a smile and asked: haven’t you found your Sula? And my name is Nima. They shared the journey of pilgrimage together and walked across the bridge on the wetland in that fall. After that, they always had their encounters on the ceremony in some of the villages. After 8 years, Zhaxima’s door was knocked at night once again. With 3 continuous soft hits and 1 hit with a bit hard, that’s the code between Zhaxima and Nima. That’s the knock she was longing for. Zhaxima had Nima embraced her as the way like Sula did and began to tell the story with Sula.Nima was just hugging her in his endless silence.Zhaxima mentioned the days they spent at the Zhaos bay every twilight.Nima was just hugging her in his endless silence.Zhaxima mentioned the dreams made her suffered every night.Nima was just hugging her in his endless silence.Zhaxima mentioned that the last time Sula said to her in the dream was on the 49th day after his leaving.Nima was just hugging her in his endless silence.Zhaxima mentioned that the last words in the dream Sula said to her. He said: my sweet Zhaxima, I have been leaving so far from you and couldn’t get back to be with you. Each night is too short for me to catch up the way to return. He looked pretty sorrowful and with some of the bruises on his face.Nima was just hugging her in his endless silence.Have you got any idea where Sula has been, asked Zhaxima in that fall?Nima was going to leave when the rooster was starting to crow. The endless darkness is too long for any single one and I shall be waiting for you without the fear of staying alone.Zhaxima said to Nima when he was leaving.Nima didn’t come on the second day night and Zhaxima was waiting.Nima didn’t come on the third day night and Zhaxima was longing.Nima didn’t come on the forth day night and Zhaxima was crying.Zhaxima blamed herself for all what she said about Sula must have hurt the feeling of Nima. She put herself in the deeply regrets and sorrows and no one knows whether it has been too later. Zhaxima didn’t stop weeping until the 49th day she heard the familiar sound from the knock of the door. It was him! Nima was just coming back from a long and tough trip.He said to her: I have climbed over 49 hills to try to find the trace of Sula. And there are 49 springs in all of these 49 mountains with the taste of its water getting bitterer and bitterer. The one stays the farthest has the taste of tears.Zhaxima was hugging Nima tightly with her tears dropping quietly.I tried to get the information from every one when I was in Lijiang and some of them also think that I look quite like one of the young men once was the member of the horse caravan some years ago. At that night it’s the inn where they settled showed a lot of presages of the doom.Zhaxima was hugging Nima tightly with her tears dropping quietly. At that night, that young man tried to stop the leader to walk further. He said that the further we walked away from Lugu Lake; the world was getting more turbid than anywhere else. There’re evils in every river and demons in every mountain. Let’s just get back. But they laughed at him for he was such a coward that could not realize where there are evils and demons; it must have gold and silver as well. Zhaxima was hugging Nima tightly with her tears dropping quietly.I didn’t stop walking until reached the lost horizon, where was called Shangri-La. The horse caravan under the mountain foot told me to find the wanted man from all of the skeletons lying beside the path, Or to find the living Buddha to try the luck.Zhaxima was hugging Nima tightly with her tears dropping quietly. Therefore, I went back to the temple of Zhamei and the living Buddha there told me all of the caravans have been to a place called Shambhala, where their life time could only afford the single turn. And they shall be no more sufferings after being there.Zhaxima was hugging Nima tightly with her tears dropping quietly.I had prepared a bag of sugar for you but it melted during the way in my cloth. Zhaxima had Nima’s cloth in her mouth and it tasted like the combination of sugar and salt. In this fruitful autumn of the golden time in a year, Zhaxima started to understand the taste of sugar processed with life.We have witnessed the story of Zhaxima, and the rest of the details may stillremain as it was in the wind. I can hardly tell what kind of life they may harvest after that fall, but at least there is something for sure: promises and some sorts of responsibility never take the role in their life. Except the love between each other, they have no common properties and they just love for nothing.Part 4Let’s just stop when the season comes to the most brilliant fall before the winter appears. In spite of that, however, no one could stop the footstep of winter, which reminds me the Iron Age described in the Works and Days from Hesiod. Don’t you hear his shouts? For now truly is a race of iron, and men never rest from labor and sorrow by day and from perishing by night. Men will dishonor their parents and will crap at them. They will not repay their aged parents the cost their nurture, and one man will sack another’s city. There will be no favor for the man who keeps his oath or for the justice or for the good.We have lost our paradise already while the people around Lugu Lake still share everything they have with all of the family members. For what kind of temptation we can’t resist, which finally lead us the way out of the golden age without any hesitation? It seems that at the moment when our ancestors turned into the arms of the patriarchal society, the endless period dominated by the violence and autocracy has determined to fill every corner of our history. Nevertheless, according to the development of the human being, nearly all of the civilization will transform its way from the matriarchal society to the patriarchal one except some very rural areas in the far distance. I am sure Lugu Lake and the Mosuo culture are one of them although changes are already on the way. Before I spend some months with the lake, I always think the world has the fixed way as it shows to me. After I get along with lake and the locals, I realize the world has the potential to fulfill its diversity. And actually it always works like this.。

That’s all. Thank you!
The Mosu people live in special houses made of wood. This kind of building is beautiful and practical because it is warm in winter and cool in summer. The local people admire their houses very much.
The lake is calm and dark green in the evening when the sun sinks
,
and is peaceful when night comes. Gentle wind blows and water ripples.
On the lake there are five islands. They are different sizes and are like green boats floating on the water. Heiwawu Island, Liwubi Island, and Lige Island are most notable. Heiwawu Island is in the center of the lake and has a variety of birds living on it. The smallest island on the lake is Nixi Island - an oblong rock covered with shrubs and moss. Besides the five islands, there are also three peninsulas and an island which is linked to a seawall on the shore by a path paved with small stones.
The morning mist mixed with the light of the rising sun gives the lake an orange glow covered by mist.
When the light of sun causes the hills to throw their shadows onto the water, the lake has a jade green color.
The forest around is dense and the air is fresh.

The Mosu Girls
The Mosu girls are beautiful, graceful and hard-working. They are the true masters of the Lugu Lake. Because of them, Lugu Lake becomes more beautiful and attractive. They faithfully guard this piece of land.
The beautiful Lugu Lake
Lugu Lake lies 200 kilometers (approximately 124 miles) from the center of Lijiang City, on the border between Ninglang County in Yunnan Province and Yanyuan County in Sichuan Province. The lake is in the shape of a horse’s hoof - long from north to south, and narrower from east to west. The vista of the lake changes constantly throughout the day.
