While studying for his bachelor's degree at Morehouse College,Reg worked on several political campaigns helping candidates get elected to government offices. At the same time he maintained a "B" average while majoring in political science. With just two more years to complete at Harvard Law School, which also gave him a scholarship,Reg made a good start on his professional career. He said,"The good life for me is the kind of life where I can find satisfaction in public service." important alternative source of tourists. In addition to providing the traditional resort﹣leisure product,it has been argued that ecotourism resort(度假村)management should have a particular focus on best﹣practice environmental management.Couran Cove Resort is such a tourist attraction located on South Stradbroke Island,Australia.Sustainable(可持续的)Practices of Couran Cove ResortSouth Stradbroke Island is separated from the mainland by the Broadwater, which is home to a wide range of plant communities.Located on the offshore island, the Resort is only accessible by means of water transportation. It provides hourly ferry service from the harbour on the mainland to and from the island.Within the Resort, transport modes include walking trails, bicycle tracks and the beach train. The reception area is the counter of the shop which has not changed in 8 years at least. The accommodation is an octagonal(八角形的)building. These are large rooms that are clean but the equipment is old and in some cases just working. The ceiling fan only works at high speed for example.Beds are hard but clean. There is a television,a radio,an old air conditioner and a small fridge in each room.As an ecotourism﹣based resort, most of the planning and development of the attraction has been concentrated on the need to co﹣exist with the natural environment of South Stradbroke Island to achieve sustainable development.Water and Energy ManagementThere is groundwater at the centre of the island, which has a maximum height of 3 metres above sea level. The water supply is recharged by rainfall and is commonly known as an freshwater aquifer(含水层).Couran Cove Island Resort obtains its water supply by tapping into this aquifer and collecting it through a pipe.In order to narrow the water uses, all laundry activities are carried out on the mainland. The Resort uses LPG power station rather than a fuel oil station for its energy supply, supplemented(补充)by wind power, which has reduced greenhouse emissions by 70%.Hot water in the eco﹣cabins and for some of the Resort's vehicles is solar﹣powered.Water efficient fittings are also installed in showers and toilets.Visitors who stay at the Resort are encouraged to monitor their water and energy usage by an in﹣house television system, and are rewarded with prizes (such as a free return trip to the Resort)accordingly if their usage level is low.EvaluationIn three years of operation,Couran Cove Island Resort has won 23 international and national awards. It has effectively implemented contemporary environmental management practices. However, the Resort‟s growth will eventually be limited by its carrying capacity, and quantity control should be incorporated in the management strategy of the Resort.(1)In order to achieve surroundings(2)What is applied for heating water on Couran Cove Island Resort?A.The LPG power.B.The petro power.C.The solar power.D.The wind power.(3)According to the study,in the future what should the Resort focus on?A.Increasing the supply of fresh water.B.Meeting the need of international guests.C.Improving the tourism entertainment projects.D.Limiting the number of the guests to the Resort.(4)From the passage we can know that Couran Cove Island Resort.A.suffers huge loss in natural resourcesB.achieves success in eco﹣resort managementC.sets a good example for profit﹣making businessD.raises standards in guest﹣monitoring management6.(8分)Bullying(霸凌)can take a variety of forms, from the verbal to the physical as well as indirect forms, such as being excluded from social groups.Bullying is clearly unpleasant, and can make the child experiencing it feel unworthy and depressed. In extreme cases it can even lead to suicide, though this is thankfully rare.Until recently, not much was known about the topic, and little help was available to teachers to deal with bullying.Perhaps as a consequence, schools would often deny the problem."There is no bullying at this school" has been a common answer if asked, almost certainly untrue.Fortunately more schools are now saying:"There is not much bullying here, but when it occurs we have a clear policy for dealing with it." Three factors are involved in this change.First is an awareness of the severity of the problem.Second,a number of resources to help tackle bullying have become available in Britain. For example, the Scottish Council for Research in Education produced a package of materials,Action Against Bullying, circulated to all schools in England and Wales as well as in Scotland. In Ireland,Guidelines on Countering Bullying Behaviour in Post﹣Primary Schools was published, too.Third, there is evidence that these materials work, and that schools can achieve something.Evidence suggests that a key step is to develop a policy on bullying, saying clearly what bullying means, and giving explicit guidelines on what will be done if it occurs, what records will be kept, who will be informed and what punishments will be employed.Thepolicy should be developed through consultation over a period of time.Pupils, parents and staff should feel they have been involved in the policy.Other actions can be taken to back up the policy. There are ways of dealing with the topic through the curriculum, using video, drama and literature. But curriculum work alone may only have short﹣term effects;it should be an addition to policy work. There are also ways of working with individual pupils,or in small groups.Work in the playground is important, too. One helpful step is to train lunchtime supervisors to distinguish bullying from playful fighting, and help them break up conflicts.Another possibility is to improve the playground environment,so that pupils are less likely to be led into bullying from boredom or frustration. With these developments, schools can expect that at least the most serious kinds of bullying can largely be prevented. The more effort is put in and the wider the whole school is involved, the more substantial the results are likely to be.The reduction in bullying and the consequent improvement in pupil happiness is surely a worthwhile objective.(1)The writer thinks that the response"There is no bullying at this school" shows.A.bullying can be easily dealt withB.bullying doesn‟t exist in the schoolC.the school knows nothing about bullyingD.the school lacks the knowledge and resources about bullying(2)From paragraph 2,we can learn that.A.reasons for the increased rate of bullying are clearB.in the previous years,British government policy failedC.developments in dealing with bullying have led to a solutionD.there is no research into how common bullying is in British schools(3)According to the passage, what is the most important part of reducing bullying?A.Develop a policy through consultation.B.Deal with the topic through the curriculum.C.Work with individual pupils or in small groups.D.Give detailed guidelines on the right things to do.(4)Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?A.Bullying:what parents can doB.Bullying:are the schools to blame?C.Bullying:the link with academic failureD.Bullying:from no way out to prevention第二节(共5 小题;每小题 2 分,共10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑.选项中有两项为多余选项.7.(10分)Public SpeakingPublic speaking can be defined as the act of making a speech in front of a group of listeners. The types of public speaking are deliberately structured with three general purposes:to inform,to persuade and to entertain. An informative speech has a purpose to inform,or give knowledge to its audience.(1)For persuasive speech, the speaker would try to change the mindset, perception,or behavior of the audience for their own good. Thus, the speaker needs to look for common ground with the audience and try to relate to what they might agree on.The last type is a ceremonial speech. It tends to be less formal and more personal than the other types of speeches. No matter how well you know the person you are giving speech about, try not to say bad things about them, even if it is meant to be a joke.(2)Sparing some time to practice will help build confidence and help determine how long the presentation will last.Aside from it,knowing who the audience will be is quite necessary.Try to get as much information as possible regarding this particular area related to the audience.Knowing the "battlefield" in advance will give the speakers a huge advantage.Language is the main aspect a speaker needs to pay attention to while giving a speech.(3) A speaker needs to choose their words carefully and make it clear to the audience what they mean.Often, when given a speech, the audience look up to the speaker to give them something new and useful.(4)Language and delivery alone will not be sufficient if the speaker does not have the body language. The movement and gesture of a speaker also affect the audience. While closing the speech or presentation, speakers can restate their main points, just to remind the audience of the important things that have beensaid.(5)A.It needs to be used clearly.B.These speeches mark special occasions.C.The important thing to watch about is not to put in too much information.D.The key of perfecting anything is through practice, including public speaking.E.They can also end it with a special message and encourage the audience to ask questions.F.Knowing how public speaking is done is a key part in understanding the importance of it.G.Thus,the speaker needs to know how to deliver their speech to fulfill the audience‟s expectation. Dear Simultaneously, important looking envelopes containing cards with the same message were hand﹣delivered to the offices of all the major news companies. One found its way to the desk of Chris Lin,a business reporter at The Post. The card was beautifully designed ﹣a black background with the words printed out in crisp white letters. There was no explanation on the back, just a website address.Chris went to the website. Its style was identical to the card's and said:"Anytime:Starting Tomorrow."The next day websites and blogs were filled with articles theorising about Anytime. Was it a shopping website like Tao Bao or Amazon? A joke?Something illegal?Anytime's marketing had worked ﹣ it was a household name before it'd even made a single sale. When the opening came, that day at noon, the Anytime website suddenly had a single field that read,"What do you want?" All you had to do was type the words into that box,and then specify how quickly you wanted your item delivered:within one, ten,or twenty﹣four hours.Bloggers were the first to test the service. And their reviews were glowing.Within weeks,Anytime had become a part of daily life.Nobody used other delivery sites or the post anymore as Anytime was much cheaper and faster.Chris still wondered what exactly Anytime was.He tried to find out who owned the company, but it was registered in a small country that did not require such information to be made public. He did find some interesting facts, though.Anyone who challenged the company,it seemed, met with serious trouble. A government official critical of Anytime for avoiding tax was forced to leave his position after news stories suddenly appeared claiming he was dishonest. The head of another company taking Anytime to court died in a car accident just days before the case was to begin.Chris began making a list of all the people who had something terrible happen to them after opposing or criticising Anytime.By lunch,he had more than one hundred examples.Something was definitely wrong.Chris worked on his list the rest of the day, emailing people who could provide more information and looking through newspaper records. After working through the night,an exhausted Chris finally fell asleep at his desk at 4 a.m..When he woke a few hours later, there was a message flashing on his computer screen:"Stop making trouble." Chris smiled. He had no intention of stopping now that he knew he was on the right track.(1)What was on the front of the card sent to Chris Lin? By next year, half of the calls we receive will be scams(欺诈). We are finally waking up to the severity of the problem by supporting and developing a group of tools, apps and approaches intended to prevent scammers from getting through. Unfortunately, it’s too little, too late. By the time these "solutions"(解决方案)become widely available, scammers will have moved onto cleverer means. In the near future, it’s not just going to be the number yousee on your screen that will be in doubt. Soon you will also question whether the voi ce you’re hearing is actually real. That’s because there are a number of powerful voice manipulation ( 处理) and automation technologies that are about to become widely available for anyone to use. At this year’s I/O Conference, a company showed a new voice technology able to produce such a convincing human-sounding voice that it was able to speak to a receptionist and book a reservation without detection. These developments are likely to make our current problems with robocalls much worse. The reason that robocalls are a headache has less to do with amount than precision. A decade of data breaches(数据侵入)of personal information has led to a situation where scammers can easily learn your mother’s name, and far more. Armed with this knowledge, they’re able to ca rry out individually targeted campaigns to cheat people. This means, for example, that a scammer could call you from what looks to be a familiar number and talk to you using a voice that sounds exactly like your bank teller’s, tricking you into "confirming" your address, mother’s name, and card number. Scammers follow money, so companies will be the worst hit. A lot of business is still done over the phone, and much of it is based on trust and existing relationships. Voice manipulation technologies may weaken that gradually. We need to deal with the insecure nature of our telecom networks. Phone carriers and consumers need to work together to find ways of determining and communicating what is real. That might mean either developing a uniform way to mark videos and images, showing when and who they were made by, or abandoning phone calls altogether and moving towards data-based communications — using apps like FaceTime or WhatsApp, which can be tied to your identity.Credibility is hard to earn but easy to lose, and the problem is only going to get harder from here on out.38. How does the author feel about the solutions to problem of robocalls?A. Panicked.B. Confused.C. Embarrassed.D. Disappointed.39. Taking advantage of the new technologies, scammers can ___________.A. aim at victims preciselyB. damage databases easilyC. start campaigns rapidlyD. spread information widely40. What does the passage imply?A. Honesty is the best policy.B. Technologies can be double-edged.C. There are more solutions than problems.D. Credibility holds the key to development.41. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. Where the Problem of Robocalls Is RootedB. Who Is to Blame for the Problem of RobocallsC. Why Robocalls Are About to Get More DangerousD. How Robocalls Are Affecting the World of TechnologyDBy the end of the century, if not sooner, the world’s oceans will be bluer and greener thanks to a warming climate, according to a new study. At the heart of the phenomenon lie tiny marine microorganisms(海洋微生物)called phytoplankton. Because of the way light reflects off the organisms, these phytoplankton create colourful patterns at the ocean surface. Ocean colour varies from green to blue, depending on the type and concentration of phytoplankton. Climate change will fuel the growth of phytoplankton in some areas, while reducing it in other spots, leading to changes in the ocean’s appearance.Phytoplankton live at the ocean surface, where they pull carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)into the ocean while giving off oxygen. When these organisms die, they bury carbon in the deep ocean, an important process that helps to regulate the global climate. But phytoplankton are vulnerable to the ocean’s warming trend.Warming changes key characteristics of the ocean and can affect phytoplankton growth, since they need not only sunlight and carbon dioxide to grow, but also nutrients.Stephanie Dutkiewicz, a scientist in MIT’s Center for Global Change Sci ence, built a climate model that projects changes to the oceans throughout the century. In a world that warms up by 3℃, it found that multiple changes to the colour of the oceans would occur. The model projects that currently blue areas with little phytoplankton could become even bluer. But in some waters, such as those of the Arctic, a warming will make conditions riper for phytoplankton, and these areas will turn greener. "Not only are the quantities of phytoplankton in the ocean changing,"shesaid, "but the type of phytoplankton is changing. "And why does that matter? Phytoplankton are the base of the food web. If certain kinds begin to disappear from the ocean, Dutkiewicz said, "it will change the type of fish that will be able to survive."Those kinds of changes could affect the food chain.Whatever colour changes the ocean experiences in the coming decades will probably be too gradual and unnoticeable, but they could mean significant changes. "It’ll be a while before we can statistically show that the changes are happening because of climate change,"Dutkiewicz said, "but the change in the colour of the ocean will be one of the early warning signals that we really have changed our planet."42. One of the cells was able to calculate addition: the presence or absence of each of two chemicals would switch on a reactioninside the cell that would make it shine different colours. The other cell worked in the same way but could subtract amounts. This kind of biological circuit resembles a simple logic circuit in a computer. In theory, it could be used to indicate the presence of an infectious substance while in fact it failed. Most biological reactions in the body aren’t that simple, though. They rarely rely on “one input and one output” – instead, multiple inputs lead to different outputs. For instance, a high level of calcium in the body in the presence of a specific hormone may suggest one disease, but a high level of calcium along with another hormone might indicate a completely different condition. To be more practical, biological computers need to be able to perform more complex mathematics. However, it is hard to pack multiple calculations into a single cell. To get around this, Fussenegger and his team have engineered a multicellular system, in which different cells each perform a separate calculation and pass on the results to each other. The system has nine cells, each containing a biochemical reaction that responds to three chemical inputs – similar to an AND, NOT and OR system in a traditional electronic circuit. These cells coordinate their activities by releasing chemicals that pass from one cell to the other. Together, they form a fully biological circuit that can respond to multiple inputs.“Although it is not at a stage yet where we can test on animals, we believe it is the most complex biological computer ever assembled,” says Fussenegger. “This work addresses one of the major limitations in synthetic biology (合成生物学) –a lack of programmable devices,” says Ángel Goni-Moreno, a synthetic biologist at Newcastle University, UK. He says that Fussenegger’s multicellular approach enables you to programme the circuit and achieve different calculations just by connecting the nine cells in different configurations (设置).In the future, a biological computer like this could be used to monitor more complex medical conditions. For example, it could respond to a rise in calcium, a drop in a hormone and an increase in a biomarker, which together would signal the presence of a specific type of cancer, help diagnose it and alert the user to seek appropriate treatment.28. The underlined word “subtract” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ______.A. add upB. take awayC. split upD. give away29. What was the progress made in Fussenegger’s early research?A. A biological circuit was implanted in one of kidney cells.B. The indication of infectious substances became a reality.C. Engineered kidney cells could switch on biological reactions.D. Certain cells were made capable of performing mathematics.30. What has made Fussenegger’s current multicellular system so special?A. It has all the functions of a traditional electronic circuit.B. It is programmable and able to perform different mathematics.C. It has successfully packed multiple calculations into a single cell.D. It has been tested through a series of experiments on animals.31. What is the best title for the passage?A. Smart cells indicating various cancersB. Electronic circuit made from multi-cellsC. Programmable cells implanted in human bodiesD. Biological computer made from human cellsD“Two centuries ago, Lewis and Clark left St. Louis to explore the new lands acquired in the Louisiana Purcha se,” George W. Bush said, announcing his desire for a program to send men and women to Mars. They made that journey in the spirit of discovery. America has ventured forth into space for the same reasons.”Yet there are vital differences between Lewis and C lark’s expedition and a Mars mission. First, they were headed to a place where hundreds of thousands of people were already living. Second, they were certain to discover places and things of immediate value to the new nation. Third, their venture cost next to nothing by today’s standards. A Mars mission may be the single most expensive non-wartime undertaking in U.S. history.Appealing as the thought of travel to Mars is, it does not mean the journey makes sense, even considering the human calling to explore. And Mars as a destination for people makes absolutely no sense with current technology.Present systems for getting from Earth’s surface to low-Earth orbit are so fantastically expensive that merely launching the 1,000 tons or so of spacecraft and equipment a Mars mission would require could be accomplished only by cutting health-care benefits, education spending, or other important programs—or by raising taxes. Absent some remarkable discovery, astronauts, geologists, and biologists once on Marscould do little more than analyze rocks and feel awestruck(敬畏的) staring into the sky of another world. Yet rocks can be analyzed by automated probes without risk to human life, and at a tiny fraction of the cost of sending people. It is interesting to note that when President Bush unveiled his proposal, he listed these recent major achievements of space exploration pictures of evidence of water on Mars, discovery of more than 100 planets outside our solar system, and study of the soil of Mars. All these accomplishments came from automated probes or automated space telescopes. Bush’s proposal, which calls for reprogramming some of NASA’s present budget into the Mars effort, might actually lead to a reduction in such unmanned science—the one aspect of space explorati on that’s working really well.Rather than spend hundreds of billions of dollars to hurl tons toward Mars using current technology, why not take a decade or two or however much time is required researching new launch systems and advanced propulsion (推进力)? lf new launch systems could put weight into orbit affordably, and advanced propulsion could speed up that long, slow transit to Mars, the dream of stepping onto the red planet might become reality. Mars will still be there when the technology is ready.32. What do Lewis and Clark’s expedition and a Mars mission have in common?A. Instant value.B. Human inhabitance.C. Venture cost.D. Exploring spirit.33. Bush’s proposal is challenged for the following reasons except that.A. its expenditure is too huge for the government to afford.B. American people’s well-being will suffer a lot if it is implementedC. great achievements have already been made in Mars exploration in AmericaD. unmanned Mars exploration sounds more practical and economical for the moment34. Which cannot be concluded from the passage?A. Going to Mars using current technology is quite unrealistic.B. A Mars mission will in turn promote the development of unmanned program.C. Bush’s proposal is based on thre e recent great achievements of space explorationD. The achievements in space exploration show how well unmanned science has developed.35. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Risky as it is, a Mars mission helps to retain Americas position as a technological leader.B. A Mars mission is so costly that it may lead to an economic disaster in America.C. Someday people may go to Mars but not until it makes technological sense.D. A Mars mission is unnecessary since the scientists once there won’t mak e great discoveries.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
