Lost HorizonLost Horizon is a novel written by an English writer James Hilton. It was in this book that the writer invented the word –“Shangri-La”, which has become the symbol of eternity, tranquility and peace. The novel is mainly about 4 kidnapped west erners’ exotic experience in the mysterious western China, Tibet. About the novel, what interest me most are the plot, the theme and the harmonious coexistence of eastern and western culture in Shangri-La.Mysteries run through the whole novel, including whether Shangri-La really exists on the earth, whether people living there could stay healthy and young and whether Conway told a real story or just made everything up, etc. The writer kept the readers in suspense from the very beginning of the story. Meeting several Englishmen in a club, “I” learned an acquaintance of mine, Conway was kidnapped in a plane hi-jacking happened in Baskul. After that, Rutherford told me that he had met Conway after the kidnapping and offered me a manuscript recording Conway's experiences. It turned out that Conway, Miss Brinklow, Barnard and Mallison were brought to Shangri-La deliberately for the sustainable development of the area, a paradise where beautiful scenery was everywhere and people lived and worked in peace and contentment. Conway and the other three led a comfortable life in a luxurious lamasery that practised a mixture of Lamaism and Christianity. The High Lama finally confessed that they intended to train some young foreigners to be the future Lamas. Conway was astounded that people here never grew old, for example, the High Lama himself was actually over 200. The fantastic prospect that one could have endless time to read and wander in such a wonderland tempted passionless Conway to stay. However, he suddenly changed his mind and left Shangri-La with Mallison and the old “girl” Lo-Tsen. Again, the novel ended with the meeting between “I” and Rutherford. He had tried to inspect the authenticity of Conway’s story. What made things more confusing was that a doctor of the Chung-Kiang hospital where muzzy Conway was found told Rutherford that Conway was brought there by a really old woman(Lo-Tsen), which proved that staying in Shangri-La couldreally prolong one’s life. The utopia and its mysteries created in the novel ha ve attracted people from all over the world to explore the western China to search for Shangri-La. A town in Yunnan Province, China, named itself “Shangri-La” for the novel’s great impact. The novel expressed the writer’s yearning for a world without viol ence and materialism. The book was published in 1933 when the world had just gone through the cruelty of World War I and was experiencing great economic depression began in 1929. At that time, the rising of the fascist dictatorship also indicated an even greater war. People really thirsted for a world of peace and beauty, which can be called escapism to some extent. In the Lost Horizon, the high Lama had come across the isolated place high in the mountain and decided to stay because of his fears of a coming catastrophic world war. The escapism and the utopia reflected in the novel remind me of a Classical Chinese prose, Cathay' s Utopia Peach Bloom Source(桃花源记). Living in the age of war and chaos, Wei and Jin Dynasties, the writer Tao Yuanming chose to live in seclusion. Just like people of Shangri-La, men and women of the Peach Bloom Source also lived a self-sufficient life in a paradise free of war, rank, oppression and violence. Life in both Shangri-La and Peach Bloom Source were peaceful and tranquil. People get along harmoniously peacefully with nature and with each other. James Hilton and Tao Yuanming expressed their and dissatisfaction and resistance towards the depressing reality by creating the two paradises that were only mirages or something imagina ry existed in the writer’s mind and could never be found. In the novel, western and eastern coexisted in the mysterious Utopia. First, the mixture of Christianity and Lamaism was the basis of people’s belief. However, other Chinese religions were also practiced in this region, such as other sects of Buddhism as well as Taoism. Second, the Lamas lived in a Tibetan monastery with modern western domestic installation. It was amazing that such an isolated community was even equipped with a system of central heating. Third, Lamas studied not only religious doctrine but also modern science and they had a good command over several languages so they all could speak perfect English. Fourth, as Chinese, they enjoyedwestern music very much. One of the lamas was a pupil of Chopin therefore people there had access to Chopin’ great unpublished music. Fifth, though people in the valley were benefited by the convenient modern facilities, they still didn’t affected by the hustle and bustle of western life. They never hurried to do anything for their prevalent belief was in moderation. It was claimed that people were “moderately sober, moderately chaste, and moderately honest.”The three points listed above are not the whole story of Lost Horizon’s glamour. It is not an adventure but makes me feel thrilled and fascinated; it is not a historical novel but offers me chances to feel the supernatural Tibetan culture and the encounter of two distinguishing culture. Maybe it is no need to search for Shangri-La as long as we keep reading, we may also find our haven in literature.。

第一章2021.12.191.Wyland was one of the Embassy secretaries; he had just given us dinner at Tempelhof—not very cheerfully, I fancied, but with the equanimity which a diplomat must always keep on tap for such occasions. It seemed likely that nothing but the fact of being three celibate Englishmen in a foreign capital could have brought us together, and I had already reached the conclusion that the slight touch of priggishness which I remembered in Wyland Tertius had not diminished with years and an M.V.O. Rutherford I liked more, he had ripened well out of the skinny, precocious infant whom I had once alternately bullied and patronized.

想当年我竟在欺负他的同时又充当他的保护者呢!2.We had a good view of the big Luft-Hansa machines as they arrived at the aerodrome from all parts of Central Europe, and towards dusk, when arc-flares were lighted, the scene took on a rich, theatrical brilliance.

Lost Horizon《

Lost Horizon《

Impressions of Lost HorizonI. The book and the writerLost Horizon, which written by James Hilton, a famous British writer. Hilton wrote his two most remembered books, Lost Horizon and Goodbye, Mr. Chips while living in a rather ordinary semi-detached house on Oak Hill Gardens, Woodford Green. The book, published in 1933, caught the notice of the public and became a huge success.II. Background knowledgeIn this novel, the writer developed plots with the First World War, the economy depression in the United States of American and the great mass fervor in exploration as the background. It is because of their query to the reality and the disappearance of European civilization that western literature writers have been keen on showing the different nations and culture. The appearance of the ideal Chinese image in this literary work is not up to the reality of China, but to the requirement of warning the corrupt and money-oriented European countries. The writer wished that European countries would accelerate the reformation of their own nations, hoping create a new western world with peace, improvement, equality and wisdom.III. Shangri-laLost Horizon was considered as the origin of Shangri-la (Chinese: Xianggelila), a fictional utopian lamasery high in the mountains of Tibet. Created a buzz in Europe after its publish, the book became a best-seller in America and Japan and the other countries.Actually, it is this book makes Shangri-la famous. The word “Shangri-la”was even written into some dictionaries of English language. For example, in The Concise Oxford Dictionary, the definition of Shangri-la is “an imaginary earthly paradise”. In this book, Shangri-la was described as a mysterious and beautiful place. As the writer described, “Shangri-la was lovely then, touched with the mystery that lies at the core of all loveliness”, and one will feel like “having reached at last some place that was an end, a finality” while standing in Shangri-la. Therefore, every year a flow of great explorers from all over the world came to Tibet to unravel the mysteries of Shangri-la.Shangri-la, such a peaceful and beautiful Pure Land, was a paradise with the unparalleled original natural beauty in reader s’ eyes. There was no war or hunger or crime but the most peaceful life. People who lived in Shangri-la were friendly and “good-humored, courteous and carefree, busy at innumerable jobs but not in any apparent hurry over them”. They believe in Moderation, which means that they “inculcate the virtue of avoiding excess of all kind”. They are moderately sober, moderately chaste, and moderately honest.IV. CharacterThe main character in this book, Hugh Conway, was a veteran member of the British diplomatic service. In other’s eyes, Conway was a clever, clam and brave young man. “He was certainly remarkable as a youth, and to me, who had known him at the hero-worshipping age, his memory is still quite romantically distinct”, the writer made such a description about Conway. Conway was always polite and knowledgeable. He knew many kind of language and can speak Chinese well. But when he talked to Chang, he had not let it be known that he spoke any Eastern tongue because he “felt it might be a useful card up his sleeve”. From this point, I think that he is also a cautious man and always handle affairs carefully. There are two other characters named Chang and Perrauh. They lived a long and carefree life in Shangri-la, especially Perrauh who had lived more than 300 years. Chang was “a subtle quibbler”, in Conway’s eyes, he was also a knowledgeable old man (actually he looked younger than he ought to be). As for Perrauh, he still alive as an over 300 years old man. It is impossible in reality, but in Shangri-la, it is true. He was a wise man who kept pursuing high self-improvement, “behaved without care for imminence with which he had always desired”, and “he kept at heart and throughout all vicissitudes the tranquil tastes of a scholar. The youngest man who came to Shangri-la with Conway in this novel named Mallinson. I think that he was an impatient and emotional young man. When he found that he and his fellows were hijacked and had no choice but wait and see, he shouted angrily, “are we bound to sit here twiddling our thumbs while this maniac does everything he damn well wants? What’s to prevent us from smashing that panel and having it out with him?” Meanwhile, Mallinson was too assertive. He thought that Chinese or even Asians are dilatory and can’t get them do anything quickly and efficiently. Yet to Conway it did not appear that the Eastern races were dilatory, but “rather that Englishmen and Americans charged the world in a state of continual and rather preposterous fever-heat”.There were some other characters in this novel, such as the stubborn Miss Brinklow who was interested in introducing western religions to people in Shangri-la and the kind Barnard.V. ConclusionIt is easy to understand the story itself; however, it is hard for me to understand the inner true essence of it. It is true that our world is much better than before, but some loveliest things have gone also, such as higher civilization. The war, lust and brutality have taken the place of them. I really hope that places like Shangri-la are really exist in somewhere of the world, which only have hope but no war, hunger or crime.。

Creating a holy land of Shangri -La in my heart
How far is distance place you looking forward to? In the lost horizon, James Hilton depicts a pure land paradise full of peace, tranquility and mystery, named Shangri-La. This is a beautiful kingdom. Here, three rivers join together. The mountains rise into the clouds. The top of the mountain is covered with snow. The grass grows deep under the feet and covers the earth. In all areas of Shangri-La, the virtues of "moderation" are observed when dealing with the relations among religious sects, nationalities, people and nature. The author thinks that there are three states of human behavior: over, under and moderate. Over and under are the root of crime, only moderate is perfect. It is such a concept that makes Shangri-La peaceful and peaceful.
I have heard the name of Shangri-La in a long time, and like most people, I am full of yearning for that secret place. But it can be seen from the background of the book that this is the period of economic crisis shortly after the end of World War I, and the storm of World War II is coming. At that time, the society was in a state of depression, panic and turbulence. People are dissatisfied with the current social situation. In the face of the current social situation. Westerners hope to
find a relatively good place where civilization can be preserved and people's lives can be saved. Maybe it's just a spiritual home. So Hilton created Shangri La, the paradise of the West. The mountain far away from the world has become a charming and rich paradise.
So, after all, Shangri-La is an imaginary utopia that hopes to avoid the real disaster. However, Shangri-La is different from the pure peach blossom garden in that it will have limited contact with the world and will not give up the achievements of scientific and technological civilization; it advocates the middle way and will not be extreme, but it will not be too calm and thirsty. Shangri la has its own responsibility to prepare for the coming disaster of the world. It is actually a modern Noah's Ark.
So, in fact, there should be such a Shangri-La like pure land in our hearts. When we face the real suffering, we can calm down, pay attention to life, care about ourselves, and find the beauty around us. And the so-called beautiful distance is nothing more than your own vision of the world.。
