The book Pride and Prejudice was written by Jane Austin and it is about the different kinds of marriage. The character I choose to write is Mr. Collins----the cousin of Ms. Bennetts, also he is the in-law-inheritor of Mr. Bennett. From reading the story, I have found he is pedantic, subservient, but funny.Firstly, Mr. Collins is pedantic. He always apologizes and acknowledgments at the beginning of meeting and also he thinks that is necessary. Such us he spends long than ten minutes on the polite formula outside his house when Elizabeth visits there in cold winter. Secondly, Mr. Collins is subservient. He really wants to let everyone know how Mrs. Catherine helped him for his job, his house and his life and also he likes repeating it over and over again.Thirdly, Mr. Collins is a funny person. The most typical one is what did he say when he makes a proposal to Elizabeth. He spouts like Firstly…. Secondly…. Moreover he explains why he does the proposal like humorlessly .It is as same as to make a speech and it made me laugh all day.In conclusion, although Mr. Collins is a really rebarbative person, he is a funny man. After reading the Pride and Prejudice, I have learned that be a polite person is not a bad thing. However, if you go too far with it, you will be a rebarbative person.。

Many scholars at home and abroad have analyzed this novel from various perspectives. However, few researchers make an attempt to explore hero Darcy’s personalities on the basis of Attitude system. Therefore, the present research will employ three sub-systems of the attitudinal resources-affect, judgment and appreciation to make a tentative analysis of hero Darcy’s personalities. The Appraisal theoryis the development and complement of the interpersonal meaning in Halliday’s Systemic-Functional Linguistics. The Attitude system, which is one of the three sub-systemsof the Appraisal theory, is put forward by J.R. Martin in the 1990s. Attitude is concerned withour feelings, including emotional reactions, judgments of behaviour and evaluation of things (Martin, 2005). It is sub-divided into three regions of feeling-affect, judgment and appreciation, which covers what is traditionally referred as emotion, ethics and aesthetics. Many scholars have done many researches based on Appraisal theory at home and abroad. Susan Hood (2004) made Appraisal theory –based analysis of academic discourse. Wang Zhenhua (2004) employed Attitude system to carry out the analysis of hard news. Li Rongjuan (2005) applied Appraisal theory to explore attitudinal meanings of English political column texts. Shan Huifang and Ding Suping (2006) did researches on famous fairytale-The Ugly Duckling from the perspective of Appraisal theory. However, there is not yet sufficient study on Attitude system-based analysis of characters’personalities. The present researchwill conduct a detailed analysis of how hero Darcy’s personalities are portrayed through the use of various attitudinal resources in the novel within the framework of affect, judgment and appreciation under Attitude system. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the attitudinal resources will be made to depict hero Darcy’s personalities.Darcy’s personalities have been summed up from two aspects. On the one hand, although Darcy is a well-educated gentleman,he is proud, arrogant, conceited, self-esteemed, haughty and fastidious. On the other hand, though Darcy seems to be proud in appearance, he is kind by nature. He is liberal, generous, candid, honest, kind-hearted, amiable and friendly. Data analysis reveals the following findings.(1)Abundant and various attitudinal resources (168) are applied in this novel. And they interact with each other so as to depict the different aspects of hero Darcy’s personalities such as proud, arrogant or kind-hearted.(2)Within the Attitude system, the judgment resources occupy the highest frequency (69.1%), which shows that Jane Austen manages to find out hero Darcy’s personalities through keen and close observation and judgment of his behaviors and manners, the affect resources the second (29.8%), and the appreciation resources the lowest (1.1%). Moreover, Jane Austen displays the tendency to employ the negative attitudinal resources to create the negative image of hero Darcy. Among all the attitudinal resources (168), 127 fall into the category of the negative ones, taking up a percentage of 75.6%.(3)Jane Austen prefers to use nominalization to confirm and reconfirm that the negative sides of hero Darcy’s personalities, which indirectly reflects her personal attitudes towards Darcy. In addition, Jane Austen is inclined to employ emotional adjectives, affective verbs as well as repetition to portray hero Darcy’s personalities. The research not only provides a new perspective to appreciate the linguistic features as well as the characters’personalities, but also supplies some important implications for the teaching of the literal works in the future.【Key Words】: Pride and Prejudice; attitudinal meaning; affect; judgment; appreciation; personalities【Type of Thesis】: Application。

When Prid e Encounters Prejudice, Everything is Different Ⅰ:Jane Austen (16 December 1775 –18 July 1817), one of the most famous novelists in Britain, was born in Hampshire. She lived in the villages throughout her life. Although there were 2 suitors, she never married. She finished her first novel when she was only 21 years old. This work’s name was First Impressions (After amending, it had a new name: Pride and Prejudice).Ⅱ:Pride and Prejudice is a humorous story of love and marriage. Mr. Bennet was an English gentleman living in Hertfordshire with his wife. He had five daughters: the beautiful Jane, the clever Elizabeth, the bookish Mary, the immature Kitty and the wild Lydia. Because of the law, after the death of Mr. Bennet, their house would be inherited by a distant cousin whom they have never met. This family's future happiness and security dependent on the 5 daughters’ marriages. One day, a rich gentleman Mr. Bingley came and rented a large house in this country. His sisters and his best friend Mr. Darcy came together. Love was soon in the air for one of the 5 sisters, while another had a prejudice against Mr. Darcy. Then they experienced many things, but at last, Mr. Bingley married the oldest sister Jane, and Elizabeth overcame the prejudice and married to Mr. Darcy. It’s a happy ending.Ⅲ:Although Mr. Song said the book report should be objective, but I had to say this book touched my heart d eeply. The women written by Jane Austen still live in our world. Some like Charlotte Lucas, they choose a marriage without love just for money and a stable life. Some like Lydia, they are so frivolous and foolish that they flatter themselves that they can do anything well. Some like Mary, they are not good-looking but think themselves are the best ones. They look down every man while they are eager for a man’s love in their hearts. Some like Jane, they are kind and beautiful, but they are also reserved and feminine。

intelligent
Four stars
In my opinion, Jane Bennet is a beautiful, kindhearted and restrained woman. As an unmarried woman, her reserve really shows she is educated; but in front of her love, it almost makes her miss her true love. It is surely her shortcoming. Even she is not as smart as Elizabeth, she is still a welcome character in the novel.
He is far more interested in getting married than
in who his wife would actually be.
Elizabeth points out in Chapter 32 that Mr. Collins’s friends “may well rejoice in his having met with one of the very few sensible women who would have accepted him, or have made him happy if they had.”
Elizabeth Bennet
Elizabeth
She is lovely, clever
intelligent . She is her father's favorite and inherits his intelligence and wit. She can also understand the deep meaning of any talk. She can talk with her partner humorously
