Wuthering Heights (excerpt)Ellen Dean's story—Catherine and Heathcliff as children1770. When I was a child,I was always at WutheringHeights, because my mother was a servant of the Earnshawfamily. They are a very old family who have lived in that house forcenturies,as you can see from their names on the stone over thefront door.I grew up with Catherine and Hindley Earnshaw, and wethree played together as children. One day, their father Mr. Earnshaw came back from a long journey. He had travelled sixty miles to Liverpool and back on business, and was very tired.“Look what I've brought you!” he told us all, unwrapping something he was holding carefully in his arms.Catherine and Hindley were expecting presents, and they rushed eagerly to see what it was. They were very disappointed to see only a dirty, blackhaired gipsy child.“I found him all alone in the busy streets of Liverpool,”Mr. Earnshaw explained to them,“and I couldn't leave him to die.He can sleep in your room.”But Hindley and Catherine were angry because they had not received any presents, and refused to let the strange child share their room. However Mr. Earnshaw insisted, and little by little the boy became accepted by the family. He was called Heathcliff,as a first and last name.No one ever discovered who his parents had been.Catherine and he became great friends, but Hindley hated him,and was often cruel to him.Old Mr. Earnshaw was strangely fond of this gipsy child, and frequently punished his son for behaving badly to Heathcliff.Hindley began to be jealous of his father's feelings for Heathcliff, and saw them both as enemies. This situation could not last.As Mr. Earnshaw grew old and ill,Heathcliff became even more his favourite, and Hindley often quarrelled with his father.WhenHindley was sent away to study,I hoped that we would have peace in the house. But then it was that old servant Joseph who caused trouble. He tried to persuade his master to be stricter with the children, and was always complaining that Heathcliff and Catherine did not spend enough time studying the Bible or attending church services.Catherine was a wild, wicked girl in thosedays. We had to watch her every moment ofthe day,to stop her playing her tricks on us.She was proud, and liked giving orders.Butshe had the prettiest face and the sweetestsmile you've ever seen.I could forgive heranything when she came to say she was sorry. She was much too fond of Heathcliff, and the worst punishment we could invent was to keep her separate from him.Her father could no longer understand her or her behaviour, and Catherine did not realize that his illness made him less patient with her.At last Mr. Earnshaw found peace. He died quietly in his chair by the fire one October evening in 1775.The night was wild and stormy, and we were all sitting together in the big kitchen.Joseph was reading his Bible at the table, while Catherine had her head on her father's knee.He was pleased to see her so gentle for once, and she was singing him to sleep.I was glad the old gentleman was sleeping so well. But when it was time to go to bed,Catherine put her arms round her father's neck to say goodnight, and immediately screamed,“Oh,he's dead,Heathcliff! He's dead!”Heathcliff and I started crying loudly and bitterly too.Joseph told me to fetch the doctor,so I ran to the village, although I knew it was too late. When I came back,I went to the children's room,to see if they needed me,and I listened for a moment at their door. They were imagining the dead man in a beautiful distant place, far from the troubles of this world. And as I listened, crying silently,I could not help wishing we were all there safe together.呼啸山庄(节选)艾伦·迪恩讲述的故事——凯瑟琳和希斯克利夫的童年1770年,我小时候一直在呼啸山庄,因为我母亲在欧肖家做佣人。

The most notorious terrorist group against black civil rights workers in the South was known as D.A. the Black MuslimsB. Federal Bureau of InvestigationC. Student for A Democratic SocietyD. Ku Klux Klan3. The reason why many young people were involved in the social movement of the 1960s was that A.A. they resented traditional white male values in US society.B. they love America so muchC. they thought they knew better than their teachersD. they viewed the adult world with grave doubt.P1491.On February 1, 1960, 4 black students from a black college inGreensboro, North Carolina, began their protest against the racial segregation laws by such tactics as sit-ins, thus beginning the civil rights movement.8. In the summer of 1963, hundreds of thousands of peaceful demonstrators, marched to Washington, D.C,where Martin Luther King, gave the famous “I have a dream” speech.P1501.Greensboro Sit-inOn February 1, 1960, 4 freshmen from a black college in Greensboro, North Carolina, sat down at a department lunch counter and ordered coffee. When refused, they continued to sit at the counter, openly defying the segregation law prevailing in the state. The next day, more students joined them. Thus began the civil rights movement, which spread from the south to the north. Later, this quiet “sit-in” became the major nonviolent direct action tactics to be used by black civil rights activists. The civil rights movement produced such great leaders as Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X, who inspired a generation of both blacks and whites to devote their lives to fighting for racial equality in the U.S.4. Martin Luther King, Jr.①.An Atlanta-born Baptist minister: the leader of the Southern ChristianLeadership Conference during the civil rights movement of the 1960s.②.To promote his philosophy of nonviolent protest against segregationand other kinds of social injustice, King organized a series of"marches"——the March on Washington of August, 1963, when King delivered his famous "I have a Dream" speech.③.As a civil rights leader, King worked not only to end racialdiscrimination (种族歧视) and poverty, but also to raise the self-image of the blacks.④.Due to his strong belief in nonviolent peaceful protest, King wasawarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.⑤.He was assassinated in the city of Memphis(孟斐斯) in April 1968. Results of the civil rights movement●Legal segregation ended in the South.●Southern Afro-Americans can vote.●But Racism is still a problem.P150Questions1.What were the major social movements of the 1960s? And what wasthe historical background of the social movements of that decade?●American Negroes experienced different lives in the South andoutside the South of America●Women experienced different lives during and after World War II●Young people resented traditional white male values in US society2. Who were the participants of the social movements of the 1960s? Many people who believed the government and the society were wrong joined one or more of the social movements. Black and white youngpeople worked in all the movements, as did many middle-class white women and some men. Those who worked in the civil right movement included older, usually male, Negro leaders; black and white young people, some white professional men and women, and some white housewives.3. What are the basic characteristics of a social movement? Two basic characteristics of all social movements: "structure" and "spontaneity" structure.●Structure means organizations●Spontaneity refers to the spontaneous actions4.The black political movement that began as a force for integration changed course in the mid-1960s and began to emphasize black uniqueness and even black separatism. What caused this transformation?Although these segregation laws were illegal under the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution, the US government would not declare the Southern laws unconstitutional until there were cases brought in federal courts. The civil rights movement began when black people spontaneously protested segregation laws and created organizations to make the protests successful. Long before the students in Greensboro, North Carolina began their sit-ins, there were many others who protested the segregation laws.5.Draw analogies between the black revolution and the women's movement. What common assumptions do they share? The women activities were most in the civil rights and anti-war movements before. They believed the male leaders of these movements were discriminating against women in the movement just like White’s discrimination against black men. They became known as the "women's liberation" group, or "women's lib", used radical tactics and received a great deal of bad publicity. This group found strong support among large numbers of young activists from other organizations.6.What are the legacies of the social movements of the1960s?What are their effects, positive and negative, upon contemporary US society?Legal segregation ended in the South as a result of the civil rights movement. Southern Afro-Americans can vote. However, racism is still an extremely serious social, political and economic problem in the US. By 1971, more than 60% of people in the US thought the war in Vietnam was wrong and wanted the war to end. In 1973 the US signed a peace treaty. The women’s movement continued to gain more rights and opportunities for women. The social movements of the 1960s had a strong effect on the way people think and act, and caused changes in many laws. However, many of the same problems they hoped to solve are still major problems in US society.。

I had agreed to teach all struggling students in need of critical intervention (介入). I knew what lay ahead — tough work hours overlaid with guilt, consumed with essays that needed feedback and lesson plans with best practice strategies. No wonder people always acknowledge my teaching career with, “I'm_glad_it's_you_and_not_me.〞Suddenly, my mind transported me to my first few years of teaching.“Peter Potter,〞 I called from my name list, trying to control my laughter. “Laughlin McLaughlin?〞 Surely these were not real names.“Emotionally disabled... keeps them separated from the oth er kids...,〞 the vice headmaster commanded. This was my first teaching assignment.Surely this year could never be as discouraging as those first few. In my new classroom, I looked into the face of Jason. At eleven, his mother was killed in an accident, leaving him with physical, academic, and certainly emotional scars. I looked at another student, Robert, standing at the door; my vice headmaster asked if I would take him, even though he was an eleventh grader in my tenth grade class. But then there were — and are — stories of success — of Dustin, in Graduate School for Electrical and Computer Engineering; of Michael, now a teacher in a city school; of Willie... I thought of the thousands of students whose lives have touched mine far more than I could have ever touched theirs.I broke from my daydream, a smile spreading across my face. Sadness, tears, challenges, fears — yes, teaching is filled with all of these — yet, it is also filled with laughter and smiles, hope, dreams, and rewards beyond measure.“I'm glad it's you and not me.〞 Those words resounded in my mind once again.4.What might the author's job be like?A.Easy. That is an old expression, but one worth knowing. A recent look at diets around the world shows that people who eat healthy food - and not too much of it - live longer. But which areas of the world have the best diets? Researchers found that foods in some of the healthiest diets -Mediterranean diet, New Nordic diet, Japanese diet and French diet - may be very different, but they are all heavy on local and seasonal foods, which include more vegetables and seafood and less red meat.Mediterranean diet contains lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and olive oil. The diet has proper amounts of fish and poultry (家禽肉). Red meat and foods high in sugar and salt are not big parts of this diet.New Nordic diet has whole grains like oats and rye, vegetables such as carrots, broccoli and eggs, seafood, fruits, oil, lowfat milk and cheese. Sugary desserts are not common in this diet.Japanese people are some of the longest living people on the planet, with women up to 87 years old and men up to 80. The Japanese diet is the reason for such lengths of life. The diet has many foods that are low in calories and high in nutrients. Japanese people eat a lot of seaweed, tofu, rice, vegetables and fish. The tradition there is to stop eating when your stomach feels 80 percent full. However, French people eat fatty foods but do not get fat. And they live a long time. This phenomenon is called the“French Paradox〞. The reason why the French eat fatty foods without getting fat may be simple. They eat less. Serving sizes in French restaurants and of products sold in stores are smaller than those in most countries. And generally speaking, most French people do not snack. This means they do not eat food between meals.8.What do we know about the healthiest diets around the world?A.They contain abundant calories.B.They tend to be expensive.C.They share certain similarities.D.They reflect popular tastes.9.What is considered as a harmful eating habit in Japanese tradition?A.Going low in calories.B.Eating to the fullest.C.Having much seafood.D.Picking many foods.10.How does the author develop the central idea in the last 4 paragraphs?A.By building connections.B.By exploring reasons.C.By listing examples.D.By analyzing figures.11.Which can be the most suitable title for the text?A.What is the healthiest diet on earth?B.How does the old expression serve?C.Why is a healthy diet so important?D.Where can we feed ourselves well?D[2020·福建三校联考]“While extroverts (性格外向者) often make great first impressions with their outgoing manner and lively personalities in interviews, their value and reputation at work diminish (缩减) over time,〞 says Corinne Bendersky, an associate professor of management.“Extroverts disappoint us over time when they're part of a team,〞 Bendersky says. “On a team you're expected to work hard and contribute a lot. But they're often poor listeners, and they don't collaborate.〞“O n the other hand, introverts (性格内向者) work hard on a team because they care what others think of them. They don't want to be seen as not pulling_their_weight or contributing 100%,〞 Bendersky says.So while companies may be attracted to hiring extroverts because they impressmanagers greatly in job interviews, bosses also may want to consider whether the extrovert they are considering will be a valuable team player, Bendersky says.Amy Jen Su and Muriel Maignan Wilkins, two writers, agree and say managers should recognize the strengths of introverted employees, such as their ability to put themselves in someone else's shoes.“These team members are often easygoing, which can make them exceptional mentors to more junior staff or particularly good sounding boards when you interact with them in oneonone situations,〞 Su says.“Managers must try to help introverts find their voice,〞Wilkins says. “Help them see that speaking up is not about selfpromotion or being in conflict but rather about offering the team key insights, making better decisions or increasing the efficiency for all.〞What about those extroverts who never seem to be at a loss for words? Should managers cut them off? Managers definitely should weigh in on how an extrovert is affecting others. Wilkins suggests saying something in private to make adjustments.12.What do we know about outgoing people according to Bendersky?A.They are good listeners.B.They are good at cooperating.C.They often make great contributions.D.They tend to perform well in interviews.13.Which can best replace the underlined part “pulling their weight〞 in Paragraph 3?A.Trusting others.B.Making good choices.C.Doing their full share of work.D.Trying to share their thoughts.14.What is Su's attitude towards Bendersky's words?A.Critical. B.Tolerant.C.Doubtful. D.Approving.15.What does Wilkins advise managers to do?A.Promote more introverts.B.Learn to work more efficiently.C.Encourage introverts to speak up.D.Avoid conflict among employees.第二节(共5小题;每一小题2分,总分为10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最优选项。

课时作业18 BeautyⅠ.阅读理解(2019·某某中学月考)The English have a difficult and, generally speaking, dysfunctional (不协调的) relationship with clothes. Their main problem is that they have a desperate need for rules, and are unable to get along without them. This helps to explain why they have an international reputation for dressing in general very badly, but with specific areas of excellence, such as highclass men's suits, ceremonial costume, and innovative (革新的) street fashion. In other words, the English dress best when they are “in uniform〞.You may be surprised that I am including “innovative street fashion〞 in the category of uniform. Surely the parrothaired punks (朋克摇滚乐迷) or the Victorian vampire Goths are being original, not following rules? It's true that they all look different and eccentric (奇特的) but in fact they all look eccentric in exactly the same way. They are wearing a uniform. The only truly eccentric dresser in this country is the Queen, who pays no attention to fashion and continues to wear what she likes, a kind of 1950s fashion, with no regard for anyone else's opinion. However, it is true that the styles invented by young English people are much more eccentric than any other nation's street fashion. We may not be individually eccentric, apart from the Queen, but we have a sort of collective eccentricity, and we appreciate originality in dress even if we do not individually have it.Another “rule〞 of behavior I had discovered was that it is very important for the English not to take themselves too seriously, to be able to laugh at themselves. However, it is well known that most teenagers tend to take themselves a bit too seriously. The Goths, in their scaring black costumes, certainly look as if they are taking themselves seriously. But when I got into conversation with them, I discovered that they too had a sense of humor. I was once chatting to a Goth in the full vampire costume —with a white face, deep purple lipstick, and black parrothair. I saw he was also wearing a Tshirt with “Goth〞. “Why are you wearing that?〞I asked. “It's in case you don't realize I'm a Goth,〞 he answered, pretending to be serious. We bothburst out laughing.作者以自己的所见所闻,给我们详细介绍了英国各类人的穿衣特点,以与其共性和个性等。

AToday, roller skating is easy and fun. But a long time ago, it wasn't easy at all. Before 1750, the idea of skating didn't exist. That changed because of a man named Joseph Merlin. Merlin's work was making musical One day Merlin received an invitation to attend a fancy dress ball. He was very pleased and a little excited. As the day of the party came near, Merlin began to think how to make a grand entrance at the party. He had an idea. His victim, who picked up the ticket, then claimed the £25000 prize, managed to trace him, and handed over the cash. The robbery happened when maths professor Vinicio Sabbatucci,58, was changing a tyre on an Italian motorway. Another motorist, who stopped to "to help", stole a suitcase from his car and drove off. The professor found the dropped ticket and put it in his pocket before driving home to Ascoli in eastern Italy.Next day, he saw the lottery results on TV and, taking out the ticket, realized it was a winner. He claimed the 60 million lire(里拉) prize. Then he began a battle with his conscience. Finally, he decided he could not keep the money despite having been robbed. He advertised in newspapers and on radio, saying: "I'm trying to find the man who robbed me. I have 60 million for him--- a lottery win. Please meet me. Anonymity(匿名) guaranteed."Professor Sabbatucci received hundreds of calls from people hoping to trick him into handing them the cash. But there was one voice he recognized--- and he arranged to meet the man in a park. The robber, a35-year-old unemployed father of two, gave back the suitcase and burst into tears. He could not believe what was happening. "Why didn't you keep the money?" he asked. The professor replied:" I couldn't because it's not mine." Then he walked off, spurning the thief's offer of a reward.5.The sentence " Then he began a battle with his conscience." A Reward of HonestyCWhen a group of children politely stop a conversation with you, saying: “We have to go to work now,” you’re left feeling surprised and certainly uneasy. After all, the idea of children working is just unthinkable. That is, until you are told that they are all pupils of stage schools, and that the “work” they go off to is to go on the sta ge in a theatre.Stage schools often act as agenciesA visit to such schools will leave you in no doubt that the children enjoy themselves. After all, what lively children wouldn’t settle for spending only half the day doing ordinary school work, and acting, singing or dancing their way through the other half of the day? Then of course there are times for the children to make a name and make a little money in some big shows. Some stage schools give their children too much professional work at such a young age. But the law is very tight on the amount they can do. Those under 13 are limited to 40 days in the year; those over 13 to 80 days. The schools themselves admit that not all children will be successful in the profession for which they are being trained. So what happens to those who don’t make it? While all the leading schools say they place great importance on children getting good study results, the facts seem to suggest this is not always the case.9. People would stop feeling uneasy when realizing that the children they’re talking to________.A. attend a stage schoolB. are going to the theatreC. have got some work to doD. love singing and dancing10. “Professional work” as used in paragraph 4 means ________.A. ordinary school workB. money-making performancesC. stage training at schoolD. acting, singing or dancing after class11. Which of the following best describes how the writer feels about stage schools?A. He thinks highly of what they have to offer.B. He favours an early start in the training of performing arts.C. He feels uncomfortable about children putting on night shows.D. He doubts the standard of ordinary education they have reached. DFor thousands of years, man has enjoyed the taste of apples. Among the leading countries in appleproduction are China, France and the United States. There are various kinds of apples, but a very few make up the majority of those grown for sale. HeightsBy LongfellowThe heights by great men reached and kept,Were not attained by sudden flight; But they, while their companions slept,Were toiling upward in the night. To be a giantThis has forever been our passion, this desire to be a giant. Not to stand on one's shoulders or have one for a friend. For these may be fortunate things. But to be one.Giants step over barriers that seem never ending. They conquer mountains that appear insurmountable.Giant rise above fear.Triumph over pain.Push themselves and inspire others. To be a Giant. To do Giant things. To take Giant steps. To move the world forward.Things work outBecause it rains when we wish it wouldn't,Because men do what they often shouldn't,Because crops fail, and plans go wrong—Some of us grumble all day long. But sometimes,in spite of the care and doubt,It seems at last that things work out.Because we lose where we hoped to gain,Because we suffer a little pain,Because we must work when we'd like to play—Some of us whimper along life's way.But somehow,as the day always follow the night,Most of our troubles work out all right.Because we cannot forever smile,Because we must trudge in the dust awhile,Some of us whimper that life's all wrong. But somehow,we live and our sky grows bright,And everything seems to work out all right. So bend to your trouble and meet your care,For the clouds must break, and the sky grows fair. Let the rain come down,as it must and will. But keep on working and hoping still. For in spite of the grumblers who stand about,Somehow,it seems, all things work out.高度作者:朗费罗伟人所至高度,并非一蹴而就;同伴半夜酣睡时,辛勤攀登仍不辍。
