The Kid That Saved His Dad On a sunny day list April,Bode, then nine, and his father, John Taylor,54,were snowmobiling around the remote country of Lake Tahoe. As they were driving on the snow,a little dry branch jammed in the brake of John's vehicle. Unable to slow down,John rushed toward a pine tree. He moved to jump off the vehicle before it crashed, but his pantleg (裤腿) caught underneath it.John felt his leg broken. As he sank six inches into the powdery snow, he could tell his arms and shoulder were injured too.Bode rushed to dig out his father, but John stopped him. They had no water, little food, and no cell phone service.“Get on your snowmobile,” John told Bode. "Follow the road, and try to find help.” After a 20-minute ride, Bode spotted a tour group and asked the guide to radio for help. The rescuers quickly appeared on the scene. And Bode led them through the white wilderness to his dad, who was pale and in pain. While they were waiting for a plane to send John to the nearest hospital, the rescuers quickly stabilized his leg. An hour later, he received surgery for the broken leg and internal bleeding.Today, John's leg has healed enough for him to take Bode out on dirt bikes. Father and son now carry extra devices on their trips, including a two-way radio with an emergency button. “I'm still a little afraid to go out on a snowmobile," says Bode. “But I'm starting to feel better about it."厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 Tisha Shaw, Bode's mother, says her son's courage and quick thinking have led her to treat him as more of an adult. Lacking in Self-Esteem(自尊)?Good for you!According to psychological and educational theories, self-esteem is essential for a successful life. Generations of children, especially minority kids, have been educated according to the theory (that they lack self-esteem), and that this deficiency is central to any problems (they may have in making their way in the world).Well, guess what? A new research has found that self-esteem can be just as high among grade D students and drunk drivers as it is among Nobel Prize winners and former presidents. In fact, people with high self-esteem can engage in,far more anti-social behavior than those with low self-esteem.“We used to believe that high self-esteem would cause all sorts of positive consequences and that if we raised self-esteem,people would do better in life,”a researcher said.“Mostly, the data have failed to support that.'Racists, street thugs and school bullies all have high scores on the self-esteem tests. And you can see why.If you think you're highly gifted, you're particularly offended if other people don't treat you that way.So you hit out or commit crimes to defend your pride. After all,who are they to suggest that you could be doing something wrong? What do they know?Self-esteem can also be an educational concern.College teachers are constantly complaining about the high self-esteem of their students. When every grade in the school is assessed so as to,make the kid feel good rather than to give an accurate measure of his work, the kid can develop self-esteem dangerously unrelated to the truth. When he's told he is getting a C grade in college,he can then get deeply offended or extremely angry.Weak professors give in to the pressure-hence,grade inflation, which results in their students'vague touch with reality.1. It is believed that minority kids often have self-esteem problem.A. TrueB. FalseC. Not Given2.A new research shows that high self-esteem is essential to success.。

Booking Online and Saving the EnvironmentWhen you are looking to book a holiday, it is unlikely that you will think about how green your booking decision is, but it is something that you should think about.By“green”we mean the pact on the environment. When looking to book a holiday, you will probably find that you are faced with two main decisions. The first is to go into a travel agency, pick up brochures(宣传册)read through them and go back with just one and book with the travel agents directly or over the phone. The second is to go onto the InternetThe Internet holds many advantages over the travel agencies. The main one is convenience. You can go online to look at holidays at any time of the day. The travel agents, however, are usually very busy at times when people can actually go, i.e. lunch hours or at the weekend. You could use the telephone, but you wouldn’t be able to see the pictures or the details of the holidays, so you would probably be sent a brochure anyway. There are websites on the Internet that make shopping for holiday deals much easier. These websites are known as price comparison websites. They search through lots of different tour operators, and the results are displayed on one page, from which you can choose.Compared with the travel agencies, booking online is greener. The piles of brochures are definitely not green, and the amount of unnecessary paper used can’t be good for the environment. In the days of the Internet, there is really no need for such a large amount of paper to be wasted. So booking online will not only save you time and effort, it will do a little bit towards saving the environment, too!1.When planning holidays, few people will think about being green.A.TrueB.FalseC. These colorful and sweet jewels from British Columbia’s fields are little powerhouses of nutritional protection.Of the common berries, strawberries are highest in vitamin C, although, because of their seeds, raspberries contain a little more protein(蛋白质), iron and zinc (not that fruits have much protein). Blueberries are particularly high in antioxidants (抗氧化物质). The yellow and orange stone fruits such as peaches are high in the carotenoids we turn into Vitamin A and which are antioxidants. As for cherries(樱桃), they are so delicious who care? However, they are rich in Vitamin C.When combined with berries or slices of other fruits, frozen bananas make an excellent base for thick, cooling fruits shakes and low fat “ice cream”. For this purpose, select ripe bananas for freezing as they are much sweeter. Remove the skin and place them in plastic bags or containers and freeze. If you like, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice on the bananas will prevent them turning brown. Frozen bananas will last several weeks, depending on their ripeness and the temperature of the freezer. If you have a juicer, you can simply feed in frozen bananas and some berries or sliced fruit. Out comes a “Soft-serve” creamy dessert, to be eatenright away. This makes a fun activity for a children’s party; they love feeding the fruit and frozen bananas into the top of the machine and watching the ice cream come out below.24. What does the author seem to like about cherries?A. They contain protein.B. They are high in vitamin A.C. They have a pleasant taste.D. They are rich in antioxidants.25. Why is fresh lemon juice used in freezing bananas?A. To make them smell better.B. To keep their colour.C. To speed up their ripening.D. To improve their nutrition.24. What is “a juicer” in the last paragraph?A. A dessert.B. A drink.C. A container.D. A machine.25. From which is the text probably taken?A. A biology textbook.B. A health magazine.C. A research paper. C. A travel brochure.CTeens and younger children are reading a lot less for fun, according to a Common Sense Media report published Monday. While the decline over the past decade is steep for teen readers, some data in the report shows that reading remains a big part of many children’s lives, and indicates how parents might help encourage more reading.According to the report’s key findings, “the proportion (比例) who say they ‘hardly ever’ read for fun has gone from 8 percent of 13-year-olds and 9 percent of 17-year-olds in 1984 to 22 percent and 27 percent respectively today.”The report data shows that pleasure reading levels for younger children, ages 2-8, remain largely the same. But the amount of time spent in reading each session had declined, from closer to an hour or more to closer to a half hour per session. When it comes to technology and reading, the report does little to counsel (建议) parents looking for data about the effect of e-readers and tablets on reading. It does point out that many parents still limit electronic reading mainly due to concerns about increased screen time. The most hopeful data shared in the report shows clear evidence of parents serving as examples and important guides for their kids when it comes to reading. Data shows that kids and teens who do read frequently, compared to infrequent readers, have more books in the home, more books purchased for them, parents who read more often, and parents who set aside time for them to read.At the end of school approaches, and school vacation reading lists loom(逼近) ahead, parents might take the chance to step in and make their own summer reading list and plan a family trip to the library or bookstore.28. What is the Common Sense Media report probably about?A. Children’s reading habits.B. Quality of children’s books.C. Children’s after-class activities.D. Parent-child relationships.29. Where can you find the data that best supports “children are reading alot less for fun”?A. In paragraph 2B. In paragraph 3C. In paragraph 4D. Inparagraph 530. Why do many parents limit electronic reading?A. E-books are of poor quality.B. It could be a waste of time.C. It may harm children’s health.D. E-readers are expensive.31. How should parents encourage their children to read more?A. Act as role models for them.B. Ask them to write bookreports.C. Set up reading groups for them.D. Talk with their reading class teachers.DWe’ve been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who are, like us, deeply focused on their smartphones or, worse, struggling with the uncomfortable silence. What’s the problem? It is possible that we all have compromisedconversational intelligence. It’s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s awkward and challenging, or we think it’s annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it’s an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits.Dismissing small talk as unimportant is easy, but we can’t forget that deep relationships wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for casual conversation. Small talk is the grease (润滑剂) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indian University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction (互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It’s not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband,” say Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral (边缘的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”Dunn believes that people who research out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of belonging, a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. “Small talk is the basis of good manners,” he says.32. What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph?A. Addiction to smartphones.B. Inappropriate behaviours in public places.C. Absence of communication between strangers.D. Impatience with slow service.33. What is important for successful small talk according to Carducci?A. Showing good manners.B. Relating to other people.C. Focusing on a topic.D. Making business deals.34. What does the coffee-shop study suggest about small talk?A. It improves family relationships.B. It raises people’s confidence.C. It matters as much as a formal talk.D. It makes people feel good.35. What is the best title for the text?A. Conversation CountsB. Ways of Making Small TalkC. Benefits of Small TalkD. Uncomfortable Silence第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

《英语(二)》2018年10月真题一、阅读判断(本大题共10小题,每小题1分,共10分)The British SummerBritain is well known for its rainy climate. People joke that even in the summer time the country never gets any sun and that the skies stay disappointingly grey even during the months of July and August.Last summer though, it was so hot that people could hardly believe it. British people weren't used to such high temperatures, so every day on the news there were stories about people struggling to work in such unusual weather conditions. Radio and television programmes also reminded everyone to drink more water and not to stay too long in the sun. When the sun comes out, British people tend to spend time in their garden if they have one. It’s common to invite friends and neighbours around for a barbecue, where everyone sits outside and eats food like grilled meat (烤肉)and salads. There's always a back-up plan in case of rain though, and the meal sometimes has to be cooked in the kitchen and eaten indoors.People also spend a lot of time in parks during the summer, having picnics or playing sports. In every green area, there’s always at least one ice cream van, a kind of car that plays children’s music and sells ice creams.Towns like Blackpool and Brighton are popular for their beaches and amusement arcades(游乐场).People go there to swim, sunbathe and eat fish and chips. The water can be quite cold, though, and that’s why quite a lot of people prefer to go abroad for their summer holiday instead. Popular destinations include Spain, Germany and France: all countries that promise a lot of sunshine!1)There is little sunshine in Britain in summer.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given2)British people like to tell jokes about each other.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given3)It was unusually hot last summer in Britain.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given4)British people enjoyed the high temperatures of last summer.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given5)The media advised people to enjoy the sunshine.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given6)Most British people have a garden of their own.A.TrueB.False7)People having a barbecue often have a plan against the rain.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given8)Children like the music from the ice cream vans.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given9)Blackpool and Brighton are known for their beaches.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given10)People go to Spain in summer to enjoy the cooler sea water.A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given二、阅读选择(本大题共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)Horse TalkDo you know horses talk? You can learn to understand “horse talk” if you pay close attention to them. When horses live in the wild, other animals try to eat them, so a lot of horse talk is about staying alive. Even now, when most horses live on farms, they watch for danger. For this reason, never walk behind a horse. If you surprise it, the horse might mistake you for a lion or wolf and give a dangerous kick.By watching the ears, you can get clues to what the horse is hearing. A horse can turn each ear in a different direction. For a wild horse, this skill is important for survival. The horse can hear something creeping up behind it while also checking out a threatening noise in front. When a horse lets its ears down, it’s feeling safe and relaxed. Though these actions may be natural responses and not deliberate communications, they help you know what the horse is thinking. Sometimes horses can send definite messages. For example, they know they are safer when they’re with other horses. If they become isolated, they “whinny (嘶鸣),” calling for company. They’re saying, “Where are you? I’m over here!” Domestic horses use the same sounds to stay in touch with other horses. If a horse snorts (打响鼻儿),it's not communicating anything. It’s just clearing dust or grass seed out of its nose. But if it snorts while holding its head high and staring at something, it’s saying. “That looks dangerous. Get ready to run!" When two horses meet, they put their noses together and smell each other's breath. It’s their way of asking, “Are you a friend?” Horses also “blow "breathing out the air loudly through the nose, when they meet something strange. They are asking, “Is this safe?”Horses have a language of their own. Now you know a bit of what they might be saying!1)Horses in the wild “talk" mainly to________.A.stay aliveC.find foodD.keep awake2)It is dangerous to________.A.touch a horse’s earsB.ride a horse on farmsC.surprise a horse from behindD.stare at a horse from front3)A horse’s ears are special because they can________.A.send messagesB.turn to different directionsC.sense temperaturesD.clear out the dust4)When a horse’s ears are down, we know that it is________.A.isolatedB.relaxedC.angryD.anxious5)From the text, we know that horses________.A.are dangerous animalsB.can hardly survive in the wildC.prefer to stay in groupsD.have different language systems三、概括段落大意和补全句子(本大题共10小题,每小题1分,共10分)Hawaii, the Aloha State① Hawaii is sometimes called “the Aloha State.” Aloba is a word in the Hawaiian language meaning love and peace. It is often used as a way to say “hello” or “goodbye.” Hawaii is like the word aloha, because it is a state that has two viewpoints: it remembers its history and looks toward the future.② Hawaii is a U.S. state made up of a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is made up of eight large islands and over 100 other smaller islands. It is the only state that is not in North America. The islands were formed by volcanoes that erupted (爆发)and rose above the ocean. There are still active volcanoes in Hawaii.③ Because of its location, Hawaii has a tropical climate. It is warm, but usually not hot, all year long. Rarely does the temperature drop below 60 degrees Fahrenheit (华氏温度)although it may occasionally snow at the top of some of the mountains.④ Once called the Sandwich Islands by Europeans, Hawaii is thought to have been settled by ancient sailors from other islands in the Pacific. The British explorer Captain Cook thought to be the first European to find the islands in 1778. Because of its location, Hawaii became a frequent stop for European traders and ships. Hawaii was an independent country before it became part of the United States in 1893. It was governed by either a king or a queen. It is one of the only four U.S. states to have been a country before statehood. It was admitted into the Union in 1959 as the 50th state.⑤ Today Hawaii is important as a vacation destination. Each year over 6 million people visit Hawaii to enjoy the beaches, the beautiful ocean, and the historical Hawaiian culture. Come and visit Hawaii.
