I have known many coaches and heard hundreds of their tips, but they usually focused on drills to develop my skills and reach the next level of play. When I was in Senior Two, I met the new school basketball coach, Brian Pawloski. I thought I was certain to be selected for the school team since I had been in it the year before. I showed up to the tryouts and put out about 90% effort since I thought I’d make it with no proble m. That was a big mistake.Brian Pawloski is the hardest-working coach I have ever met. He didn’t expect 100% effort, he expected 200% effort. One example: he once made us do 40 suicide drills for the 40 lay-ups (投篮) we missed in a game. Some think this is crazy, but it isn’t. After this conditioning practice, as we were getting a cup of cold water to drink, I said, “Coach, that was the best practice I ever had.” I was completely sincere. This man was and is the person who influenced me most at my high school. He expects us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom. If I am not working on basketball, I am reading a book that he thinks will help us better understand life’s challenges, including Wooden, Coach, and The Screwtape Letters. In the first two years I slacked off, not putting forth my full potential. Now, unlike the coaches of my youth, this man was interested in how he did off the court. He always made sure I kept up with my studies and was able to be trusted. I can honestly say that no other coach has given me so much advice on how to succeed in basketball, but more importantly, in life. My school is lucky to have such a great person to teach, coach and influence their students. I will always remember my high-school basketball days as one of the hardest times I have ever worked in my life not only in basketball but in my growth as an individual.25. Different from other coaches, Coach Brian ________.A. concentrated on skill trainingB. trained the team to the edge of deathC. expecte d the team to do well in their studiesD. asked the team to do more reading than training26. The underlined phrase “slacked off” in the last paragraph probably means ________.A. paid no attentionB. made less effortC. had less passionD. showed no interest27. In the author’s eye, Coach Brian is ________.A. professional and seriousB. hard-working and honestC. skilled and cruel and helpfulCIn the depths of the French Guianese rainforest, there still remain unusual groups of indigenous(土著的) people. Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony(殖民地) of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of “lawlessness” in the world. The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the effects of a Frenchman form Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne.“I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I have worked there on and off for almost ten years,” says Gin. “I’ve been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living envi ronment. I don’t see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.”“I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,” continues Gin. “I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show di fferent specific worlds more clearly.”His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modernFrench Republic, which brings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide.28. Why does the author feel surprised about the indigenous people in French Guiana?A. They seldom follow the French law.B. They often ignore the Guianese law.C. They are separated from the modern world.D. They are both Guianese and French citizens.29. Gin introduced the special world of the indigenous Guianese as _________.A. a tour guideB. a geographerC. a film directorD. a photographer30. What is Gin’s attitude towards the lives of the indigenous Guianese?A. Cautious.B. Doubtful.C. Uninterested.D. Appreciative.31. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?A. The modern French lifestyle.B. The self-supporting hunting.C. The uncivilized hunting.D. The French Republic.DA Chinese actor’s divorce from his wife, over her a lleged extramarital affair, has social media buzzing, with posts about the subject gaining over five billion views.Wang Baoqiang announced online on Sunday that he was divorcing his wife, Ma Rong, and sacking his agent, Song Zhe. Wang and Ma’s split has many people wondering if uneven matches are unlikely to succeed.A lot of social media discussion has also centred around divorce, and in particular how people can protect themselves. Wang has alleged that his wife transferred and hid some of the coup le’s assets. They’re a wealthy couple -- their assets, according to Chinese media, include nine flats, a BMW car and various luxury goods. 第I卷第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

AIn the Stone Age, people didn’t need to find salt. They were hunting a lot of their food, and eating a lot of red meat. Red meat has plenty of salt in it, and naturally, people at that time didn’t have to go and find extra salt. But when people began to farm, about 10,000 BC, they started to eat mainly grains like rice and very little meat. Then they really needed another way to get salt. People sprinkled(洒) salt on different kinds of food, because there were no refrigerators. The earliest evidence we have for people producing salt comes from northern China, where people seem to have been harvesting salt from a salt lake by 6,000 BC and maybe earlier.By about 4,500 BC, Central Asian people along the shores of the Caspian Sea were mining rock salt underground. This is the earliest known salt mine in the world.By 800 BC, Chinese written records tell us that people in China were producing salt by boiling ocean salt water until the salt was left. About the same time, in Europe, the Indo-European Celts(凯尔特人) were mining salt underground in modern Austria, Hungary, southern Germany and Poland.By 252 BC, a Chinese governor named Li Bing also worked out how to mine salt. Men dug deep wells down to where there were natural underground salt water pools, and took the salty water out.Because everyone needed salt, but only a few people could produce it, salt was something everybody bought. Governments, therefore, began to tax it to raise a lot of money. Both the Han Dynasty and the Tang Dynasty, in China, got a lot of their money from the salt trade. About 1,000 AD, businessmen brought salt across the desert on the backs of the camels. The businessmen used the salt to buy slaves and goods from West Africa. Then they forced the slaves to mine even more salt.1. People in the Stone Age didn’t have to find salt because ______.A. they couldn’t adapt to (适应) the taste of saltB. they didn’t know how to preserve foodC. they ate lots of red meat which contains saltD. they gave meat to others in exchange for (交换) salt2. According to the passage, how did the Central Asian people get salt?A. By boiling ocean salt water.B. By mining rock salt underground.C. By harvesting salt from a salt lake.D. By taking salt water from salt water pools.3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. Many people couldn’t afford to buy salt.B. Salt once functioned as money in ancient times.C. West Africa learned how to mine salt from China.D. Salt was the main source of economy in the Tang Dynasty.BA group of swimmers has described how a group of dolphins protected them from a group of white sharks (食人鲨)off the coast of New Zealand. The lifeguards were on a training swim when they came across a group of great white sharks before the dolphins raced in to help. The swimmers were surrounded by the dolphins for forty minutes before they were able to make them safety back to the beach. It was an uncomfortable experience as they were circled by a group of white sharks, which came within a couple of meters of them. Lifeguard Rob Howes was in the water with a colleague and his teenage daughter. He said around half a dozen dolphins suddenly appeared and forced them to gather together. The mammals swam in tight circles to create a protective wall between the white sharks and the lifeguards as the great white sharks were under the surface. The swimmers said the dolphins were extremely upset and repeatedly slapped (拍打) the water with their tails as if to try to prevent the white sharks from attacking them. It’s a day they’ll never forget, especially for one who was on her first day as a volunteer. They have no doubt that the dolphins acted on purpose to protect them. As we were leaving, we found that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and had hit her head on the concrete. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock. Walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very upset about what had happened to the couple. He said to me, “Mum, it’s not much fun falling over in front of everyone.”At the front of the supermarket a charity(慈善) group had set up a stand selling cooked sausages and flowers to raise funds. Tenyson suggested that we should buy the lady a flower. “It will make her feel better,”he said. I was amazed that he’d come up with such a sweet idea. So we went over to the flower seller and asked her if we could buy a flower for the lady to cheer her up. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can’t take your money for such a wonderful gesture.”By now paramedics(救援人员)had arrived, and were attending the injured woman. As we walked up to her, my son became intimidated by all the blood and medical equipment. He said he was just too scared to go up to her.Instead I gave the flower to the woman’s husband and told him, “ My son was very upset for your wife and wanted to give her this flower to make her feel better.”At that, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you so much, you have a wonderful son. He is explaining the reasons why he took a year-long break from his job. “I was quite burned out after practicing medicine for 26 years. I needed a recharge(恢复精力)”. So he took a “gap year(间隔年)”, from July 2011 to June 2012, to explore things like ancient buildings, antique restoration, archaeology and traditional Eastern medicine, in locations including Alaska, Nepal and Rome.“Taking a rest from work is an wonderful way for adults to go into a new career(事业) or refresh an old one,” said Holly Bull, president of the Center for Interim Programs in Princeton, N.J., which sets up gap-year programs. The group works mainly with college-age students, but it has also served older adults since it was formed 28 years ago. “In recent years, mid-career breaks have been gaining more interest,” she said. A report on adult gap years published this year by a market research company also described the potential(潜在的) American market for gap years as a “sleeping giant.”“A gap year is a challenge for the older individual to step out of a comfort zone and take a risk. I enjoyed that side most.” said Dr. Brown, who kept a daily blog about his experience. His time studying Eastern medicine “reassured(再次确保) the reasons I went into health care,” said Dr. Brown, who returned to practice medicine at his old job, although he works fewer days. “I use those experiences to provide my patients with more care,” he added. “And I listen better than I did before.”George Garritan, chairman of the Department of Leadership and Human Capital Management at New York University, certainly agrees with Dr. Brown. He said a gap-year experience could be worthwhile for employees and companies. For employees, investing(投资) in themselves and improving skill sets is a move that will benefit throughout their career.

Then he bent down, picked another starfish, and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”There is something very special in each and every one of us. We have all beengifted with the ability to make a difference. And if we can know that gift, we will gain through the strength of our visions the power to shape the future. We must each find our starfish. And if we throw our starfish wisely and well, the world will be better.25. The underlined words “something very special” refers to ______.A. the gifts from friendsB. the strength of making a decisionC. our own starfishD. the ability of shaping one’s own future27. From the last two paragraphs, we can learn that ______.A. the wise man realized something new and importantB. the wise man thought it was foolish of the young man to throw starfish in the oceanC. the young man had the ability to make a differenceD. it is necessary for us to save starfish on the beach28. The writer told this story in order to show us ______.A. how and where we can write a good articleB. everyone can do something for the futureC. wise men are sometimes stupidD. young people are actually wiser than old peopleCLiving and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher. If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart()疏远). When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.Com munication begins with the concerns of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and ignore everyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing. If you looked up t he word “communication” in a dictionary, it would say “the exchange of ideas, the conveyance(表达)of information, correspondence (通信), means of communication: a letter or a message”. To maintain (保持) a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. L et people know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note. When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll lis ten to what they have to say, but ask them politely to listen to you. Yelling or walking away only makes the situation worse. This is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the f ireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they h ad been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let the incident go. Communication is the key factor here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.Communication isn’t a one-way deal: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel and listening is the key factor to communication.29. In the writer’s view, dealing with parents is __________ than with children.A. more difficultB. easierC. more uninterestin gD. more interesting30. The main idea of the second paragraph is __________.A. the importance of friendshipB. to make your feeling known to othersC. the importance of communicationD. the disagreement between generations31. The example in this passage proves that ___________.A. Sophie’s parents are willing to listen to herB. Sophie is very polite to her parentsC. Sophie did well in explaining her being lateD. communication is the solution(解决办法) to misunderstanding32. All the following statements are correct except “_______”.A. If you don’t agree with others, you’d better let them knowB. It is better to say “Hi” to others than say nothingC. If you are not able to communicate, walk awayD. Communication is a two-way dealDGood health is the most valuable thing in the world. When you’ve got it, you never think about it. When you haven’t got it, you think about it all the time. Our biggest enemies are not terrible diseases and so on. We are our own biggest enemies because we sometimes destroy our own good health. Some of us eat too much, d rink too much and smoke too much. And though our reason tells us we should control ourselves, we find it difficult. The fact is that most human beings need stimulation (刺激). Wh o doesn’t enjoy a drink after a busy day? Only a smoker knows the pleasure of a cigarette with a cup of coffee. The danger is when these innocent pleasures run our lives and so destroy our health. When you find yourself eating between meals or eating too much rich food, when you can only keep yourself going by taking frequent drinks or by smoking one cigarette after another, then it’s time to stop and think what you might be doing to yourself. The funny thing is that when we don’t control ourselves, simple pleasures are no longer simple pleasures. All right, I know what you’re thinking. You’re probably saying, “It’s easy to say, but I can’t help myself. I need that extra bit of food, that extra drink, that extra cigarette. Life has so many pleasures that I c an’t do without them.” But I’m saying you can help yourself. Not only that, you must help yourself. Because if you don’t help yourself, no one else can. So be your own best friend.33. According to the author, ________ our biggest enemies of health.A.too much drinking isB. too much smoking isC. eating too much isD. we ourselves are34. “I can’t help myself” means ____________.A. I can’t do it myselfB. I must ask someone to helpC. I can’t control myselfD. do help me, please35. This passage mainly tells us________.A. terrible diseases and so onB. to enjoy pleasures after a busy dayC. the difficulty of controlling ourselvesD. that we should control ourselves to keep healthy第二节(共5小题;毎小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

AHave you ever felt that you want more friends? Have you found that you don’t know how to make friends? Don’t worry. It’s easier than it looks.Start with small actions. If you’re uncomfortable with long conversations with people, start by just saying “hi” and asking what the pers on is doing. Even if you do more listening than talking in the beginning, people will usually still like you. When it comes to conversations, remember “F.O.R.”. It stands for family, occupation(职业) and recreation(休闲). You are most likely to be asked about these three topics when you meet someone new. Most people feel comforta ble talking about the three topics. The great thing is that you also can communicate with someone new in these three areas.Honesty is the best policy. In friendship, “honesty” is the fundamental quality that one must have. One should always be honest with his or her friends. Don’t laugh at people’s fault. Praise them honestly and openly. Say you are sorry if you hurt your friend.Give more than you take. Be there when they need you, Encourage them; we all need encouragement now and then. Encourage their dreams. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying. “I promised you a gift, and here it is.” What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories. 1 told it over and over how much I loved it!One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as “hopeless”, “pitiful”, and “dying”, which sounded ominous.Christmas w as coming. “Don’t expect any presents this year.” Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. “If your baby brother lives, that’ ll be Christmas enough.” As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears. I’d never seen him cry before. The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say. “What? He’s all right?” He hung up and shouted upstairs.” The hospital said we can bring Richard home!”“Thank God.” I heard Mum cry. From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them that happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. Memories of a happy familyCLike human beings, dogs may catch cold because of cold weather, wet conditions or can also get it from other sick dogs. If a dog has a running nose and watery eyes, coughs or sneezes(打喷嚏), then it is quite probable that the dog has caught cold.A dog's cold can get over after a few days without treatment but it totally depends upon the owner to treat it with medications or improve its immune power (免疫力) to get rid of the cold naturally. Following are some of the things you can do if your dog gets a cold. You can improve its immune power by giving it proper nutrient diet. Healthy food can really do wonders. Try to give it food which is either suggested by the vet(兽医) or is healthy for your pet. Increase the intake of food which is rich in vitamins A, C and E.Keep your dog warm. The best place for your dog in winter is inside your house. Do not keep your dog outside when it is cold and wet. At home you can also keep the dog warm with the help of carpets. This will make him comfortable and help him to recover fast.Increase the fluid(流质)intake as it helps a lot. Water can be the best choice but you can also add broth (肉汤)in water which will give your dog strength. Warm water will make your dog more comfortable and will also keep the dog away from the respiratory infections(呼吸道感染).Steam treatment is considered to be effective in getting rid of cold. It makes the nasal (鼻的) passage wet, which helps proper b reathing. Just fill your bathroom with steam and leave your dog inside the bathroom for 15 minutes. Do it nearly 2 to 3 times a day and you will see your dog recovering. These are some of the things you can do to help your dog recover from cold. Not newspapers, at least not anymore. In fact, if you’re like most young people, you probably don’t read the newspaper at all.In one recent survey, just 19 percent of 18-to-34-year-olds said they read a newspaper every day, while 37 percent watch local TV news and 44 percent visit Internet news sites daily. As people turn more and more to new technologies, they turn the pages of newspapers less and less.“There’s a revolution (革命) in the way young people get news,” says media consultant Merrill Brown.Just a generation (一代人) or two ago, the newspaper was the main way that many people got their news. Now, nearly every home has at least one TV set. There’s high-speed, wireless Internet both at home and in many public places. You no longer have to wait for a bundle of newsprint to arrive on your doorstep every morning. Thanks to new technology, if you want to know what’s going on in the world, you can get breaking news immediately in more ways than one.So newspapers face a very big challenge. Raised on MTV and video games, today’s kids and young adults want flashy displays, special effects, quick information, and the chance to interact (互动) in real time, even when they’re reading about serious problems. If newspapers can’t find creative ways to be more than just ink on paper, some experts suggest, they might disappear completely.Traditional newspaper articles are supposed to be read from beginning to end, lack (缺乏) of interaction. With Web pages, on the other hand, there’s more freedom. You can look through the things you’re interested in, then follo w links to other sources. You can join discussion groups, read other people’s opinions on a topic, or start a blog to express your own views.13. This passage is mainly about ______.A. the disappearing newspaperB. different news sourcesC. the future of the InternetD. the new technologies14. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the disadvantage of newspapers?A. High price.B. Lack of changes.C. Slow speed.D. Lack of interaction.15. The author of the passage would probably think the future of newspapers is ______.A. attractiveB. brightC. hopelessD. uncertain第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

A travel guidebook.BI have no memory of December 27, 202X, but I can tell you this much--it was the day my five-year-old son, Dane, saved my life. All the practicing Dane and I had done came together that day. Teaching him to learn our home address, how to use the phone, how to dial 911, and how to answer the questions a 911 operator might ask him if he did have to call--paid off.At about 3:30 that afternoon, I wasn’t feeling well and had been lying on the sofa. At some point, I went to the bathroom and it was there that I fell down and went unconscious. When I fell, my face hit the floor, causing two of my teeth to break off. And my body blocked the door.Dane must have heard me fall, because he came to the bathroom and called out to me. When I did not answer him, he looked in through a gap in the door and saw the blood from my injured mouth. That’s when his “training” kicked in. First, Dane phoned my mother--his grandma and when Grandma didn’t answer the phone, he called 911. Dane remained calm, stayed on the line and told the operator what had happened and where we lived. He turned on the outside light and opened the door for police and paramedics(医务人员), and then led them to me.Recently, emergency responders in Taber, the town where we live, honored Dane at his school during an assembly(集会(jíhuì)) of his kindergarten classmates and other students. The Taber Police Service praised my son and gave him a certificate(证书(zhèngshū)) in recognition of his “knowing exactly what to do in an emergency situation.”Dane saved my life, and he is my angel! If I had not taught my son how to react when there was ever an emergency in our home, I am quite certain that I would not be alive now. I strongly suggest other parents understand the life-and-death importance of taking the time to teach their kids these skills, too. Children can learn these things at a very early age. I know this first-hand, as Dane was three years old when I started teaching him.4. According to the text, Dane .A. won a certificate for excellent test scoresB. taught himself emergency knowledge at 3C. once saved his father with the mother’s helpD. began to learn emergency knowledge in 20135. Emergency does happen often in our everyday life.B. Parents should teach their young children how to deal with emergency.C. Parents must learn to be paramedics before learning emergency knowledge.D. It doesn’t take much time and patience to teach children emergency knowledge.CNov. 21 is World Hello Day. It began back in the 1970s as part of an effort to make the world more peaceful. It was created by the United Nations just after the war between Israel and Egypt in 1973. The philosophy (理念(lǐ niàn)) behind it is: Say “Hello” and stop war.It sounds like a fine idea, but most of us know that simply saying “Hello”won’t bring about world peace. Still, on a smaller range, the simple act of saying hello to someone can make a lot of difference. This might not be obvious. After all, it’s such a casual thing and requires so little effort. You raise your head to someone as you pass by them in the school corridor (走廊(zǒuláng)), say “Hello’ then it’s over.Although we might not realize it, a small thing like a greeting can mean a lot to a person. Many people are lonely because they’re shy. They find it difficult to communicate with people, even though they want so. It leads to them feeling cut off.On this basis, maybe it’s a good idea, not just on Nov. 21, but every day, to remember to say “Hello” to as many people as we can. The stranger who hears your greeting may secretly smile in their heart. You might even make their day.Greeting other people is the easiest way to be polite. Politeness is the way we individual humans link up with the rest of the human world outside of our circles of family and friends. Politeness is one of the aspects of culture that make us a society rather than just many individuals living in the same space. No one said it better than the French author Joseph Joubert: “Politeness is the flower of humanity’’. A “Hello” to a stranger is a small thing, and often neglected (忽视(hūshì)), but through it we can make the world better for another person.8. What is World Hello Day intended(意图(yìtú)) for?A.Philosophy. B.Peace. C.Politeness. D.War.9. What has an effect on people most?A.Raising heads to others. B.Doing something casually.C.Meeting in the school corridor D.The simple act of saying hello.10. Why does someone feel lonely?A.They are unwilling to communicate with others.B.They are too shy to communicate with others.C.They are very fond of living alone.D.They don’t like doing things as others do.11. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A.We should neglect a small thing.B.Saying hello to others is powerful.C.The flowers make the world better.D.No one is better than Joseph Joubert.DSince the end of World War I (WWI) in 1918, Canadians and millions of others around the world have paused at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to honor the sacrifice(牺牲(xīshēng)) our soldiers have made in different ways, fighting for the freedom that we all enjoy today.Known as Remembrance Day, the day originated as a tribute (致敬(zhìjìng)) to the soldiers of WWI, a dark period for our young country, which claimed the lives of over 60, 000 soldiers and civilians nationwide. As there are no more surviving soldiers of WWI, today we rely on the wisdom and words of those soldiers who fought in the wars that followed and this day now also recognizes their heroic contribution. They tell us to always remember what those brave souls fought for, and all they ask in return is that we never forget. That’s why we wear the red poppy(罂粟花); That’s why when we see a soldier in uniform we should stop to say “Thank you”; that’s why we take a pause from our busy lives for two short minutes today in honor of those brave people. Yet this message is fading away, year after year. Take for example the decision to allow parents to excuse students from Remembrance Day ceremonies at school. Not only does it show a lack of respect, but it distances the student from his or her classmates. It is difficult to understand why any Canadian parent would want to removetheir child from the time-honored tradition of reading the poem in Flanders Fields, while a wreath(花环(huā huán)) of poppies is laid. It is more important than ever to teach school-aged children about our history, no matter how violent it was. Sheltering them from the realities of war is a great disservice. Understanding why conflicts happened, or happen today can help shape choices and decisions they make as adults.Of course, because we live in a free society, we cannot force an individual to do something. It is unfortunate that some parents now have their children opt-out of the services. These people should be reminded they are free to make such choices only because of the men and women whom the rest of us are remembering.12. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a Remembrance Day activity today?A. Listening to stories told by WWI soldiers.B. Wearing a red poppy to show respect.C. Expressing thanks to soldiers in uniform.D. Stopping to remember the war dead at 11 a.m..13. What does the writer think of Canadian parents’ excusing their children of the Remembrance Day ceremonies?A. Disrespectful.B. Reasonable.C. ShockingD. Proper14. What can we learn from the passage?A. War history is too violent for school children to learn.B. People should be forced to learn about the realities of war.C. The contributions of the soldiers should always be remembered.D. Few students are willing to take part in Remembrance Day ceremonies.15. The underlined phrase “opt-out” in the last paragraph probably means_________.A. regrettedB. removedC. remindedD. recognized 第二节: (共5小题;每小题2分,满分(mǎn fēn)10分)根据短文内容(nèiróng),从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
