副词rather的基本用法

■修饰原级形容词或副词。是一个表达程度的副词，作用相当于fairly，quite，pretty，very，too 等，在语气上，rather相当于pretty，比fairly，quite重，比very轻。

■rather 通常可以置于定冠词之后，不定冠词之前或之后去修饰某个形容词。

■rather 可以修饰形容词或副词的比较级形式。

His wife is rather older than he is.

That is rather more than I wanted to pay.

■rather 经常与too连用，构成rather too，相当于much too，far too等，修饰原级形容词或副词。

■rather 还可以修饰名词、动词、介词、分词等。

It is rather a pity.

※无论有没有形容词，rather 均可放在名词之前。它一般放在冠词前面，但如果有形容词，也可以放在冠词后面。

■fairly 与 rather 用法辨异

◎rather在语气上比fairly更强烈。

This is a fairly easy book. 这本书还算浅易。

This is a rather easy book. 这本书太容易了。

◎fairly通常修饰说明容易被人接受的一面；rather多修饰说明不易被人所接受的一面。

This physics problem is fairly easy.

This physics problem is rather difficult.

It is fairly warm today.

It was rather cold yesterday.

◎rather可以与too连用，相当于much too，far too等，或修饰形容词以及副词比较级，fairly则不能。

This car is rather larger than he wants.

It was rather / much / far too easy.

◎rather 可以置于不定冠词之前或之后，而fairly一般应置于不定冠词之后。在这一点上，rather 与quite用法相同。

I think that would be a rather nice excuse.
