When you get to the part where I‟m expected to promise to …love, respect and obey her,‟…giving up all others,‟ and …be true to her forever,‟ I‟d be happy if you‟d just leave that part out.” He gave the minister the cash and walked away with a light heart. The wedding day arrived, and the bride and groom reached that part of the ceremony where they would make vows to each other. When it was time for the groom‟s vows, the minister looked the young man in the eye and said, “Will you promise to kneel before her, obey her every command and wish, serve her breakfast in bed every morning of your life and make a vow before God and your lovely wife that you will never even look at another woman, as long as you both shall live?”The groom was shocked, but in spite of himself, he said in a low voice, “Yes, I will.” Then the groom whispered to the minister, “I thought we had a deal.” The minister put the $100 into his hand and whispered back, “She made me a much better offer.”1.F2.F3.T4.T5.FTask 3: Long Distance FriendshipsAmerican weddings are not always the same. I‟d like to show you pictures of my wedding. When we got engaged, an announcement was published in the newspaper. The announcement typically includes the names of the bride, the bridegroom and their parents and the wedding is expected to be held. About a month before the wedding, we sent out wedding invitations to relatives and friends. This is the church where we had the wedding. My father gave me to my future husband. Then the minister started the wedding ceremony. He greeted the guests, and talked about the meaning of marriage. Next, we exchanged vows and gave each other rings. This is the main part of the wedding. After the vows, the minister prayed for us. Then the minister declared us husband and wife, and we kissed each other. Here is my sister, who was a bridesmaid. This is the bouquet I carried. Traditionally, the unmarried women gather after the wedding, and the bride throws her bouquet to them. The one who catches it will, according to tradition, be the next one to get married. At the reception, we cut the wedding cake and fed each other bites of the cake. Then we toasted each other with champagne. Finally the reception was over, and the minister signed the marriage certificate and we were legally married.1. A2.B3.C4.D1-3-7-5-4-2-6IV. Casual dating usually begins in the early teens, and in the late teens a pattern of steady dating develops. There is a great possibility that one goes to a dance with one person, to a football game with another, and to a picnic with a third. Sometimes two couples go out together. This is known as “double dating.”Group dating is also popular among young people. Large groups of boys and girls may go around together. Young people may go out together for a long time, which is, in effect, a public statement of their intention to marry. Men and women go out together a great deal, especially those in cities. This is “adult dating.”They ski together, dine together, either at restaurants or in each other‟s homes. The American dating system is a rather casual one. Often young Americans who hardly know each other go out on dates. It is also acceptable for them to arrange a “blind date”, that is, a date between two young people who have not met before.Dating DescriptionCausal dating Early teensSteady dating Late teensMany partners e.g. a dance, a game, a picnicDouble dating Two couplesGroup dating Large groupsGo out for a long period Intention to marryAdult dating Men and women.e.g.ski, work, dine together Casual dating system Those who hardly know each otherBlind dating Those who have never met beforeVI. 新视野大学英语第三版第二册课文语法讲解_Unit3教学提纲
新视野三版读写B2 U3 Text AJourney through the odyssey years1 Most of us know about the phases of life which we label to parallel differentage groups and life stages: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and oldage. We think of infancy before childhood and middle age before old age, witheach unique phase bringing its own peculiar set of challenges. Thesechallenges can be overcome by acquainting ourselves with them, such as thechild's need to learn, the adult's need to find the right career and build a family, and the senior's need for support and good health care.2 Interestingly, ideas about the stages of life are changing.3 In previous times, people didn't have a solid idea of childhood as beingseparate from adulthood. A hundred years ago, no one thought ofadolescence. Until recently it was understood as a norm that their induction toadulthood was completed as soon as they graduated from college. They wouldnow find a sensible job which would lead to a career. Then during this careerthey would start a family, ideal y before they turned 30.4 Today we have an equivalent need to recognize a new phase of life thatcomes after high school graduation, continues through college, and then leadsto starting a family and having a career, the so-cal ed odyssey years. Recenttrends show radical changes as young people are fol owing adifferent agenda. They take breaks from school, live with friends and oftenreturn to living with their parents. Similarly, they fall in and out of love, quit onejob and try another or even shift to a new career. So, we need to recognize thisnew stage, the odyssey years, which many now consider to be an unavoidablestage in reaching adulthood.5 People who were born prior to the 60s or 70s in the last century tendedto frame their concept of adulthood based upon achieving certainaccomplishments: moving away from home, becoming financial y independent, finding the right spouse and starting a family. But that emphasis on stability didnot remain static. Today, young people are unlikely to do the same. During theodyssey years, a high proportion of young people are delaying marriage, childbearing, and even employment.6 The odyssey years can saddle young people with enormous pressure tomove forward quickly. As the sole heir and focus of their parents' expectations, hopes and dreams, some react with rebellious and prideful attitudes and精品文档behavior toward their parents. They often resent the pressure they're feelingand keep a distance from their parents or even run away from home. Theirconfusion comes from the difficulties to make parents understand them andthe fluid journey of discovery they need in this phase of their lives. To get awayfrom this confusion and upset, many young people resort to computer games,iPods, iPhones, or iPads, to help distract them from their pain and stress.7 Likewise, their parents are feeling more anxious. They maymake allowances for a transition phase from student life to adult life, but theyget upset when they see the transition of their grown children's lives movingaway from their expectations and stretching five years to seven years, andbeyond. The parents don't even detect a clear sense of direction in theirchildren's lives. They look at them and see the things that are being delayed.8 It's hard to predict what's next. New guidelines haven't been established yet,and everything seems to give way to a less permanent version ofitself. There's been a shift in the status and balance of power between thegenders, too. More women are getting degrees than men. Male wages haveremained stable over the past decades, while female wages have boomed.9 Apart from anything else, this has had an implicit effect oncourtship. Educated women can get many of the things they want, such assecurity, accomplishment, and identity without marriage. However, bothgenders are having a harder time finding suitable mates to build their liveswith. Considering all of this, it's beneficial to know that even though graduatesare delaying many things after college, surveys show they still hold highlytraditional aspirations. For example, this contemporary generation ratesparenthood even more highly than previous generations did!10 This new phase will likely grow more pronounced in the comingyears. Nations around the world have witnessed similar trends toward delayingmarriage and spending more years than ever shifting between highereducation and settling down with a career and family.11 Nevertheless, graduates shouldn't be deceived into thinking they can backoff simply because things have become more difficult. A large number ofpeople chasing relatively fewer opportunities can create strong competitivepressure. So, from the outset, keep your resume professional and up-to-date.12 To reinforce this essential message, success moving through the odysseyyears will come to those who don't expect to achieve their goals right away butknow that they must have the strength, capacity and confidence to endure overthe long term. If you're a little late with your goals, don't feel like a failure! Stay 精品文档strong, be positive, and keep focused! Someday you will look back and wonderat the vast changes as you passed through the odyssey years.Language Points:1 Most of us know about the phases of life which we label to parallel differentage groups and life stages: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age.(Para. 1)Meaning:Most of us know about the different life stages that we describeaccording to different age groups: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age.2 We think of infancy before childhood and middle age before old age, witheach unique phase bringing its own peculiar set of challenges. 新视野⼤学英语读写教程(第三版)Book2Unit3课⽂讲解Section AJourney through the odyssey yearsBackground information1.generation groups in the westGeneration gaps, referring to difference between young people and theirelders, especially between children and their parents, have often been attributed to rapid cultural change, particularly musical tastes, fashion, culture and politics. Some special terms for different generations have thus been coined in English-speaking countries:Generation Jones:A term used to describe the generation born right after World War || in 1945 through 1965.It's usually identified with “baby boomers”.Key characteristics assigned to these members are less optimism, distrust of government, and generally used to refer to people born in the 1960s.This generation marks the period of birth decline after the baby boom. The generation was pushed toward adulthood at an age earlier than any other recent generations. They are more ethnically diverse and better educated than the baby boomers.Generation Y:Also known as the Millennial Generation and many of them are children of baby boomers .Their birth years range from the early 1980s to the early 2000s.It's generally marked by an increase use and familiarity with communications, media, and digital technologies.Generation Z:Also known as the net or the internet Generation. In the US and other Western nations,it is a common name for the people born from the mid.1990s or early 2000s through to the present. This generation has spend their entire life with the World Wide Web and high tech gadgets.2.the odyssey yearsThe term odyssey years originated from The odyssey,a long poem by the Greek author Homer, which is a sequel of the Greek hero,Odysseus. It describes Odysseus's long journey, trying to return home from adventures and war. For English speakers,as many as for many cultures, the very name of poem,The Odyssey, has become a special term for an epic journey,or great struggle. The man character in the epic poem(史诗),Odysseus, was wandering away from home and loved ones. During his journey of 10 years,he encountered repeated troubles and challenges. The key insight in Odyssey is that the essentials of the journey are not only outward struggle against tremendous difficulties, but, more importantly, inward struggles leading to personal growth. His journey is the one of self-discovery and of combating his own arrogance and pride from his young rebel heart. Therefore, it makes sense to borrow The Odyssey from Greek mythology to describe the rebellious years young people usually go through. The term odyssey year is a metaphor of this special stage for young people.Detailed study of the text1Most of us know about the phases of life which we label to parallel different age groups and life stages childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age.(Para.1) Meaning: Most of us know about he different life stages that we describe according to different age groups: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age.phase:n.[C] one of the sages of a process of development or change 阶段;时期As time are changing, we?re entering a new phase in internationalrelation.
