One step is to make sure that the house seems a lived-in one. Living room curtains should be pulled down only half-way. Bedrooms that usually have the curtains pulled down at night should be left down . Another is to make sure that all outside locks are the dead-bolt type (双保险) . Still another is to leave several 100W lights burning and make sure that one is in the kitchen. Lights that turned on and off by themselves are the best. Then, too, it is a good idea to leave the radio turned on and setto a talking station. Any type of speaking makes a thief think twice before trying to enter. But it may well happen that after you spend two days in St.Louis and in Kansas City the appearances of these two cities soon mix up. A few form groups which journey together, but most of them travel alone. And they travel through a universe so large that one star seldom comes near to another. For the most part each star makes its journey in complete loneliness, like a ship on an empty ocean. The ship will be well over a million miles from its nearest neighbor. From this it is easy to understand why a star seldom finds another anywhere neat it.We believe, however, that some two thousand million years ago, another star wandering(漫游) through space, happened to comenear our sun, Just as the sun and the moon raise tides(潮汐)on the earth, so this star must have raised tides on the surface of the sun .But they were very different from the small tides that are raised in our oceans; a large tidal wavemust have travelled over the surface of the sun, at last forming a mountain so high that we cannot imagine it. As the cause of the disturbance(动荡) came nearer, so the mountain rose higher and higher. And before the star began to move away again, its tidal pull had become so powerful that this mountain was torn to pieces and threw off small parts of itself into space. These small pieces have been going round the sun ever since. They are the planets(⾏星).47. Millions of stars are _______________.A. following a regular path in spaceB. moving about without a fixed courseC. seldom wandering about in the universeD. always travelling together48. Some two thousand million years ago, the mountain on the sun was raised probably because__________.A. a large tidal wave of a star travelled over the surface of the sunB. another star happened to come near the sunC. the sun and the moon raised the tides on the earthD. the star moved away from the sun49. The article suggests that _____________ .A. our earth exists before the sunB. how space formedC. no one knows where the earth comes fromD. our earth used to be a high mountain on the sun50. The expression "the cause of the disturbance" refers to _________.A. the large tidal waveB. the powerful tidal pullC. the star coming near the sunD. one of the sun's planets51. In this article, the writer mainly wants to tell the readers __________.A. that the universe is so large that we cannot imagine itB. how the high mountains were formed on the sunC. why the tides over the surface of the sun were so powerfulD. where the planets in the universe came from( E )Contacts(交往) between Japan and the rest of the world have grown a great deal in the twentieth century. In some situations, this behavior may bring misunderstandings. Usually a handshake is not the universally2 accepted greeting. Also, looking others right in the eye might not mean the same thing in other parts of the world. When greeting Asians for the first time, do not shake hands. Physical contact may be embarrassing. Many Asians, particularly Japanese, have learned to accept handshakes when dealing with Westerners. For Japanese, a slight bow of the head is usually suitable for responding to a handshake.People in the Middle East, particularly Muslims3, avoid body contact with the opposite sex, but persons of the same sex commonly hug when greeting each other. When shaking hands, men should be careful not to pull their hand away too quickly. Also, people from France, Spain, Italy and Portugal greet friends by kissing each other on both cheeks.Smiling is the universal gesture of friendliness. In America, smiling is a happy or friendly thing to do. In some Latin cultures, for example, smile may be used to mean "Excuse me"or "Please".In many cultures, avoiding eye contact is a sign of respect, but such behavior can also lead to misunderstandings. Forexample, some Asian students have been regarded as lacking respect for their American teachers because they do not look at the teacher while he or she is speaking.Notes:1. response n. 反应2. universally adv.一致地; 共同地3. Germany.Section BIn most Western restaurants and homes, people have different manners when it comes to talking, eating and sitting.Usually dinner is enjoyed with quiet voices, and people are not allowed to bring up anything unpleasant. For example, if someone wants to leave the table to the toilet, he or she has to do so without mentioning what he or she is going to do.Meals are always eaten quietly. No eating noises are allowed and therefore people chew with their mouths closed. While drinking soup, coffee or wine, slurping* is also highly impolite. How to sit at the table also has rules. Everyone should sit up straight with one hand (usually the left) on his or her lap holding a napkin while the other hand (usually the right) holds the fork or spoon. Only when using a knife to cut something should one have both hands on the table, but as soon as the cutting is done, the hand should go back to the lap. Also, elbows are not allowed on the table. People should never reach across the table for any reason. Instead they should ask someone sitting near to pass what they want to them. For example, "Would you please pass the potatoes?"As soon as you are seated, remove the napkin from your place setting, unfold it, and put it on your lap. At formal occasions, all diners can not place their napkins on their laps until the host or hostess places his or her napkin on his or her lap. PETS2-READING-1AIn the 1900's, American townspeople usually washed and brushed their teeth and combed their hair in the kitchen. Or they kept a water pitcher (大水罐)and a wash basin in their rooms and took care of these things there. The bathtub was a wash tub(澡盆)filled with water from the stove. If you were small enough you could sit down by drawing your knees to your chest. Otherwise, you washed yourself standing up. Often all the women and girls in the family bathed together. Then the men and boys did. In most families this was Saturday night because Sundays they went to church.A small number of families did have running water. But that depended on whether there was a water system where they lived and on whether they could afford the plumbing(水管设施). Some people had bathtubs in their homes as early as 1895. But many others did not have their first bath in a bathtub until 1910 or later when they were fifteen or sixteen years old.56In the first paragraph, "took care of" means "".[A]kept [B]looked after [C]used [D]kept and used57. "It might seem strange that people still want to listen to instead of watching television, but this is an unusual art form whose time has come again, "said David Amibrose, director of Beyond the Border, an international storytelling festival(节)in Wales."Some of the tales, like those of the Inuit from Canada, are thousands years old. So our storytellers have come from distant lands to connect us with the distance of time. " he said early this month. Two Inuit women, both in their mid 60s, are among the few remaining who can do Kntadjait, or throat singing, which has few words and much sound.Their art is governed by the cold of their surroundings, forcing them to say little but listen attentively. Ambrose started the festival in 1993, after several years of working with those reviving (coming back into use or existence)storytelling in Wales."It came out of a group of people who wanted to reconnect with traditions and as all the Welsh are storytellers, it was in good hands here." Ambrose said.61. Ambrose believes that the art of storytelling.[A]will be more popular than TV [B]will be popular again[C]started in Wales [D]are in the hands of some old people62. The flashes reflected light could be seen several miles away. The enemy did not know what the flashes meant, but other Greek soldiers could understand the messages.Roman soldiers in some places built long rows of signal towers. When they had a message to send, the soldiers shouted it from tower to tower. If there were enough towers and enough soldiers with loud voices, important news could be sent quickly over distance. In Africa, people learned to send messages by beating on a series of large drums(鼓). Each drum was kept within hearing distance of the next one. The drum beats were sent out in a special way that all the drummers understood. Though the messages were simple, they could be sent at great speed for hundreds of miles. In the eighteenth century, a French engineer found a new way to send short messages. In this way, a person held a flag in each hand and the arms were moved to various positions representing different letters of the alphabet. It was like spelling out words with flags and arms. Over a long period of time, people sent messages by all these different ways. However, not until the telephone was invented in America in the nineteenth century could people send speech sounds over a great distance in just a few seconds.65. According to this passage, the Roman way of communication depended very much upon .[A]fine weather [B]high tower[C]the spelling system [D]arm movements66. The way of communication made use of visible signs.[A]French [B]Roman [C]African [D]AmericanDBecause we can feel that things are heavy, we think of weight as being a fixed quality in an object, but it is not really fixed at all. If you could take a one pound packet of butter 4, 000 miles out from the earth, it would weigh only a quarter of a pound. Why would things weigh only a quarter as much as they do at the surface of the earth if we took them 4 000 miles out into space? The reason is this: All objects have a natural attraction for all other objects; this is called gravitational attraction, but this power of attraction between two objects gets weaker as they get farther apart. When the butter was at the surface of the earth, it was 4 000 miles from the centre (in other words the radius(半径)of the earth is 4 000 miles). When we took the butter 4 000 miles out, it was 8 000 miles from the centre, which is twice the distance. If you double the distance between two objects, their gravitational attraction decreases two times two. If you treble(翻三倍)the distance, it gets nine times weaker(three times three). If you take it four times as far away, it gets sixteen times weaker (four times four)and so on. 69. The best title for this passage is.[A]The Earth Weight [B]Weight in Space[C]Changing Weight on the Earth [D]Weight on and off the Earth70. We can feel things are heavy because.[A]weight is a fixed quality in an object[B]they are far away from the centre of the earth[C]of the earth's strong attraction for them[D]they are not taken away from the surface of the earth71. If the distance between two objects is shortened by half, their gravitational attraction will. [A]double [B]become four times stronger[C]be the same [D]get four times weaker72. If an object weighed one pound 8 000 miles above the earth, it would weigh on the surface of the earth.[A]6 pounds [B] 4 pounds [C]9 pounds [D]1/9 poundEAs more women in the United States move up the professional ladder, more are finding it necessary to make business trips alone. Since this is new for many, some trips are certainly in order. If you are married, it is a good idea to encourage your husband and children to learn to cook a few simple meals while you are away. They will be much happier and probably enjoy the experience. If you will be eating a good meal alone, choose good restaurants. In the end, they will be much better for your digestion(消化). You may also find it useful to call the restaurant in advance and state that you will be eating alone. You will probably get better service and almost certainly a better table. Finally, and most importantly, anticipate(提前做准备)your travel needs as a businesswoman; this starts with lightweight luggage which you can easily manage even when fully packed. Take a folding(折叠)case inside your suitcase; it will come in extremely handy(极其方便)for dirty clothes, as well as for business documents and papers you no longer need on the trip. And make sure you have a briefcase so that you can keep currently required papers separate. Obviously, experience helps, but you can make things easier on yourself from the first by careful planning, so that right from the start you really can have a good trip!73. Who is the author's intended audience?[A]Working women who have no time for cooking.[B]Husbands and children of working women.[C]Working women who must travel on their own.[D]Hotel personnel who must attend to working women.74. Why is lightweight luggage important for the travelling businesswoman?[A]It provides space for dirty clothes.[B]It is easy to move.[C]It can double as a briefcase.[D]It is usually big enough to carry all business documents.75. Where would this passage most likely appear?[A]In a magazine specially for women.[B]In a restaurant and hotel guide.[C]In a news magazine.[D]In a journal for top ranking businessmen and women.第三部分:阅读理解56从上下文来看"took care of"应是"kept and used"之意,答案为D。

全国英语等级考试二级(pets2)阅读理解练习题二

Man is a land animal, but he is also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the needs of man. The sea has provided man with food and a convenient (便利的) way to travel to many parts of the world. Today, nearly two—thirds of the world's population live within 80 kilometers of the sea coast. In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive (=continue to live). Resources on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many of man's needs. The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man's technology is impressive. Oil and gas explorations (探险) have been carried out for nearly 30 years. Valuable amounts of minerals exist on the ocean floor ready to be mined (开采).Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and shellfish (贝类动物) is an ancient skill practised in the past mainly by Oriental people.Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents (水流) and waves offer possible use as a source of energy.Technology is enabling man to explore (勘探) ever more deeply under the sea. The development of strong, new materials has made this possible. The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by the year 2000 the problems that prevent us from exploiting fully the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea will be largely solved.1. What is the beat title for the passage?A. Needs of Man.B. Sea Harvest and FoodC. Sea and Sources of EnergyD. Sea Exploring Technology.2. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A. man hasn't completely made use of the riches of the seaB. technology for exploring the sea has been solvedC. harvesting rice in the sea will be made possibleD. in the near future man can live on the ocean floor3. Why does the author mention a steamship in paragraph 5?A. To illustrate that man can make use of sources of energy from the sea.B. To show that a steamship is better than other kinds of ships.C. BOOKS
As is well known, books teach us to learn life, truth, science and many other useful things. They increase our knowledge, broaden our minds and strengthen our character. In other words, they are our good teachers and wise friends. This is the reason why our parents always encourage us to read more books.
Reading is a good thing, but we must pay great attention to the choice of books. It is true that we can derive benefits from good books. However, bad books will do us more harm than good.
A TRIP TO THE COUNTRY
One Sunday my mother (Mother) had (made) me take my little young brother to a trip to the country. She bade me take good care of him.
While we were walking along the road, the sun was shining brightly and the breeze was blowing gently. We saw the beautiful flowers smile (smiling) at us and heard the birds sing (singing) their sweet songs on the trees. The scenery was indeed very pretty (beautiful).
When we felt tired, we returned home. We saw Mother (our mother) wait (waiting) for us at the door.
BE PATRIOTIC
It is the duty of every citizen to make the country rich and powerful (To make the country rich and strong is...). In order to accomplish this object one must be patriotic (love his country). I consider this an unchangeable truth. How can a student love his country (be patriotic)? I find my answer very simple and clear. He must study hard and store up knowledge so as to serve his (the) country in the future. If every student can do according to what I said, the country will certainly be rich and powerful.
THE VALUE OF TIME
An English proverb says that time is money. I consider it (this) wrong. Why? Because we all know that we can earn money by work but can not in any way get back time (in anyway). For this reason, we may (can) say that time is more valuable than money.
Many people do not know the value of time. It (this) is indeed a great pity. We must bear (keep) in mind that wasting time is equal to wasting your life.
