名著的英语读后感第一篇:呼啸山庄名著英语读后感a reading report of wuthering heightsthe book i have read this term is wuthering heights. emily bronte(1818-1848) is perhaps the greatest writer of thethree bronte sisters——charlotte bronte, emily, and anne bronte. emily bronte published only one novel, wuthering heights (1847). some of her best lyric are also ratedwith the best in english poetry. her famous poems arelove and friendship, the bluebell.a man named lockwood rents a manor house called thrushcrossgrange where the housekeeper nelly tells him thestory here. one day, mr. earnshaw, the owner of the manor, goes to liverpool and returns home with an orphan boy. at first, the earnshaw children——a boy named hindley andhis younger sister catherine ——detest heathcliff. but catherine quickly es to love him. mr. earnshaw prefershim to his own son, and he sends hindley away to college when he treats heathcliff badly.then mr. earnshaw dies, and hindley returns with a wife. he treatsheathcliff as a labor to seek revenge on him. one night, heathcliff and catherine wander to thrushcross grange. catherine is bitten by a dog and is forced to stay at the the grange. during that time, she infatuates with edgar. catherine’s desire for social advancement prompts her to bee engaged to edgar linton. heathcliff runs aways froms wuthering heights, and returning shortly after catherine and edgar’s marriage. then he deviously lends money to drunken hindley. when hindley dies, he inherits the manor. he places himself in line to inherit thrushcross grange by marring isabella linton. catherine bees ill, she gives birth to a daughter and dies. shortly therefore, isabella flees to london and gives birth to heathcliff’s son, named hareton. thirteen years pass, young catherine meets hareton. they began a secret romance. linton pursues catherine only because his father forces him to. when edgar nears death, heathcliff lures and holds catherine prisoner until she marries linton. then edgar and linton die soon. si_ months later, lockwood returns, and finds that catherine grows to lovehareton as they live together and plan to be married. heathcliff bees more and more obsessed with elder catherine, and then dies soon.wuthering heights is a classic tragedy of love. i am surprised by howmuch i like it. this is a book that talks about the death of romantic notions, even the relatively happen ending doesn’t reduce its sorrow. when i was wrapped up in the story, i am so moved by their true love and felt sadness deep in my heart. after reading the whole story, i would like to talk about the main character of the story——catherine earnshaw and her choice of marriage. catherine does love heathcliff very much for he is more herself than she is, but her choice of love really leads to the tragedy. in catherine’s lif e, she made a very important decision in her life——marrying to edgar. in fact, her love for edgar can never be pared to that for heathcliff. she did so, because she thought the wealth of edgar would be useful to help heathcliff. heathcliff is a man full of retaliations. he loved catherine very much, but what he did, on the contrary, added to the misery of catherine, he should not walk into catherine’s lifeagain after his disappearance. at the same time, his revenge on young catherine and edgar as well as his own son seems so ridiculous and can only bring himself with endless sadness.as far as i am concerned, the choice between truelove and highsocial status is so difficult. many people say thatthe life is real, you can not make a living only dependon romance, so most people persuade me to marry to a rich man. in the modern life, if one man has no house or money, it is difficult for him to find a wife. so we can not get rid of thinking of this fact. different people have different attitudes towards happiness. they should choose unique love from which they can find what they like best, in order thatthey can stay happy all their lives.after reading, i have a better understanding of love. if you really lovesomeone, his or her happiness is the most matters.not having a right understanding of and attitudes towards love will only result in hurting yourself as well as the one you love. in a ward, love is the permanent theme ofliterature and human beings. people often struggle in those troubling romantic notions. to be or not to be,it’s really a question. however, which kind of marriage one should choose depends all on his or her character and e_perience, no one else can make choice for them and that’s why every love story is unique.第二篇:英语名著读后感!英语名著读后感!rev iew of “is arrogant and prejudice”austin “is arrogant and prejudice”,just like she said,is on two inches ivory the thin carving,it is austin"s representative works.this pulizer prize in 1953 and the 1954 novelprize for literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. besides the old man and the sea, i have read some of his other works, such as the sun also rises, a farewell to arms and the snow of kilimanijaro. but the old man and the sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me.i first read this book when i was in my fifteens. and now i remember it just as well as if i had read it yesterday.pride and prejudice is a chefdoeuvre. my first impression of this story was from screen.it"s long long ago, maybe before i can read english books. i don"t remember which movie edition i had seen. but i was impressed by themusic, the scenery and the costume. i was very favor of a section of music in its balls. it"s pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. regarding to the characters, i liked elizabeth, the heroine, though i didn"t think she"s beautiful. but she"s smart. however, i didn"t pay much attention to the plot. i thought it"s so long that it made me impatient and bored. by now, ihaven"t read the whole story in english or its chinese version, either. i owe it to my prejudice.in fact, i didn"t understand the story at that time.i didn"t know why it called pride and prejudice. ofcourse someone was pride, but i didn"t find where" s the prejudice. i thought it"s normal, the way people treated each other in that. i considered prejudice would be very disgusting. but to the movie everthing was ok in my minds, e_cept its length. now, i think i have understood more about it. i"m a prejudiced person so i can"t find where"s wrong. i merely like to do the things i like. everytime i meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone e_perience and my mood of the time.《the adventures of tom sawyer》汤姆索亚历险记读后感:the adventures of tom sawyer is american famousliterary giant mark twain take his youth as the main subject to poland, even in europe in the 1930s. szpilman died in 2021 at the age of 88, and he wrote down the amazing story immediately after theliberation of poland, which tells his struggle to survive nazi occupation of poland during world war ii.szpilman became subject to anti-jewish laws imposedby the conquering germans. by the start of the 1940s, szpilman had seen his world would go from piano concert halls to the jewish ghetto of warsaw and then must suffer the tragedy of his family deported to a death c. at last deciding to escape, szpilman went into hiding as a jewish refugee where he was a witness to the warsaw ghetto uprising in 1943 and the warsaw city revolt in 1944.in 1999, this book was rewarded as one of the best books. “ "the pianist," wladyslaw szpilman"s remarkable memoir of his survival in warsaw between the years 1939 and 1945, is a significant contribution to the literature of remembrance, a document of lasting historical and human value. it has all the rawness and specificity of horrors painfully and unprehendingly withstood and afterward just as unprehendingly --but necessarily-- recorded. writing this book would seem to have been a further act of survival by a man who performed more of them in si_ years than most human beings do in a lifetime. there are many ways to read a book about the holocaust, and one of them, surely, inevitably, is to try to answer the unanswerable: what makes one man endure when so many others succumb? from szpilman"s testimony we learn this:it is an ineffable and wholly unpredictable mi_ture of fate, determination, accident, instinct. to knowwladyslaw szpilman is, in the most hopeless of conte_ts,to know a modicum of hope” (l.a.times sunday book review, december 5, 1999).it has been reprinted for many timesand was translated to at least 30 kinds of languages. and it was also been made into a movie, which won three oscars: best director, best actor, and best adapted screenplay.after finishing appreciating the book as well as the movie, i was deeply shockedand moved. in the ghetto, people lived in fear from minute to minute, starving, ill, tired and witnessing scenes of unspeakable horror. people were shot at randomby bored german soldiers; others were registered and sent to concentration cs.by contrast, we are so happy to livein the peaceful world, with enough food, sound body and freedom. there’s no e_cuse to plain, the only thing we should do is to cherish our beautiful life.on the process of szpilman’s escape, a number of people help him to survive, including his friends and boss and even a germany caption. that remains me the humanity, which e_ists among people in every corner of the world. we all have families, we all have friends, and we all have the right to live. but do the germans really can’t understand this point? it seems that they take killing others as game, but after burning the dead bodies of the jews, they bee talk about their own mothers…… war, it’s all because the war. how many innocent people die? how much unnecessary loss is caused?in the end, i would say that everyone has the responsibility to object to and avoid violence and wars, and we must build a harmonious world through our own efforts. then we can really live a happy life.第四篇:英语名著读后感简爱麦克白呼啸山庄macbethmacbeth is one of the scriptures written by shakespeare. the story is filled with blood and macbeth failed to stem the revolt and was killed by macduff.from t his story, i see the changes of macbeth’s feature. at first, he was soft with a clear conscience. however, at last, he no longer felt guilty or agonized , killing men was like swatting flies to him. his human nature was buried by benefit. everyone will pay the price for any thing that he did. te biter is sometimes bit. as a students, i think we shouldn’t intrigue against each other but help each other instead in order to make our mon ambitions e true.wuthering heightswuthering heights is a well-written tragedy of love.i think cathy is a real dangerous beauty who caused thetragedy because of her vanity. heathcliff or edgar, she chose edgar because she thought that it would degrade her to marry heathcliff. then, the revenge of heathcliff started. heathcliff came back with a lot of money and cheated hindley’s belongings by a card game. he married edgar’s sister isabella and hijacked little catherine and forced her to be married with his dying son. he had given all his love to cathy and his heart turned into a stone as soon as cathy was married to edgar. the only thing to our happiness was that little catherine fell in love with hareton and the revenge was over at last.as we all know, love should be selfless and holy. it shouldn’t be connected with one’sstatus, health, property or anything else. just as thebu___word goes,“i love you not because of who you are, but because of who l am with you.” love is the purest thing in the word that e_ceeds glacial melt water. at least, love is far away from revenge.the story is wonderful and everyone who reads it would be touched and moved. it is mi_ed with love and hate, happiness and sadness. wuthering heights is a bookworth reading because it can give you so much lessons about life. try to read it and you won’t regret i t!jane eyre‘yes, jane .you are a free woman,’ he said.‘so choose freely now .i offer you my heart ,my hand, and all my life.’ as a reader, i can’t imagine what could make jane much more surprised and happier than that. when mr. rochester asked, ‘will you marry me, jane?’ and when he said ,‘use my name-edward-and accept me .’i am filled wit tears and moved a lot. but out of our e_pectation, two uninvited guests appeared on the wedding and declared that mr. rochester had married another woman .there was no doubt that the wedding was destroyed .after jane knew that mr. rochester was tricked into marrying bertha mason who was a madwoman and a drunkard by mason’s family ,she still left thornfield hall resolutely and determinedly without anything mr. rochester’s. living in a world without mr. rochester was more painful than any punishment to jane . years late ,jane came back as a wealthy women . ‘will you marry me? poor , blind and crippled?’ ‘yes, sir.’after reading this story , i understand the true meaning of love .just as the saying goes, i love you not because of who you are ,but because ofwho i am when i am with you. love is like a crystal which is pure without any defect. if you fall in love ,you will throw all caution to the winds . love triumphs over everything. love has no age ,no limit and no death . there is no paradise on earth equal to the union of love and innocence . to my happiness, the story has a good ending as i e_cepted. jane eyre is one of the most wonderful story in the world and attracts so many people. it is well worth reading and you will be touched a lot and benefit a lot.第五篇:简爱世界名著全英读后感全英读书笔记英语专业大学本科feelings of reading jane eyre useful e_pression1) [useful e_pression] e_pression] (p.40)life appears to me too short to be spent in nursing animosity or registering wrongs.the type of materials in this book is written in english, and the topic area is literature. i spent reading the book for 2 months.in the world history of literature, some many classical famous works are going to be immortal, but jane eyre deeply enters people"s soul deeply, it byirresistible intrinsic deep has attracted the tens of thousands of readers deeply, has affected people"s inner world, is in the world history of literature the eternal classics.when jane eyre was a baby, her parents died. so she had to live with her uncle and his family. unfortunately, her uncle also went away several years later.then jane was sent to the logwood, which was a charity school and became a teacher there when she grown up. later she leftit to bee a governess of adela varens, the ward of mr. edward rochester, a thornfield manor. later, jane and mr. rochester fell in love with each other, and they decided to get married. but mr. rochester was revealed that he had a wife during the wedding ceremony. so jane left thornfield and mr. rochester. otherwise mr. rochester’s wife was crazy. one day, she made a fire. mr. rochester tried his best to save his wife, but failed and his eyes were burnt and he became blind.the terrible news came to jane, she came back to mr. rochester hurriedly. jane told mr. rochester that she still loved him a lot, and tried her best to cheer him up. finally, they got married, and had a lovely baby.this book enthralled me with the charm of language, and brought home to me the great wealth of english words and phrases.but this book is too difficult to me, and i had to look up a number of words. if there are e_plains of some difficult words, i think it will be much better.the figure of jane eyre had the greatest impact on me. after i close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, jane eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think: i remember her goodness, her pursuit of justice, her self-respect and the clear situation on equality, her striving for life, her toughness and her confidence…the writing of the book is effective, beautiful and even fascinating. the author is skillful in telling stories. i can easily find out the characters of these dramatis personages.behind the wonderful story, the authore_pressed herstrong dissatisfactions to the society then. the author thinks that people should be good educated, and everyone is equal, no matter male or female.the new facts that i hadn’t learn before is goodness.i remember her goodness: for someone who lost arms and blinded in eyes, for someone who despised her for her ordinariness, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past.to me, i think that i can hardly forgive those people who have hurt me deeply. may be it is good enough that not to do some revenge.as a result of reading this book, her story makes me thinking about life and i learn much from her e_perience, at least, that is a fresh new recognition of the real.i can feel that how beauty really is, as we are all fleshly men, so we can’t distinguish whether a man is of nobleness or humbleness, but fleshly men, so wecan’t d istinguish whether a man is of nobleness or humbleness, but as there are great differences in our souls, and from that, we can know that whether a man is noble or ordinary, and even obscure, that is, whether he is beautiful or not.in essence, bronte"s novel became a direct assault on victorian morality. controversy based in its realistic e_posure of thoughts once considered improper for a lady of the 19th century.emotions any respectable girl would repress. women at this time were not to feel passion, nor were they considered se_ual beings.to conceive the thought of women e_pressing rage and blatantly retaliating against authority was defiance against the traditional role of women. jane eyre sent controversy through the literary munity.for not only was it written by a woman but marked the first use ofrealistic characters. jane"s ple_ity lied in her being neither holy good or evil. she was poor and plain in a time when society considered ”an ugly woman a blot on the face of creation.“ it challenged victorian class structure in a strictly hierarchal society.a relationship between a lowly governess and a wealthy nobleman was simply unheard of. bronte drew criticism for her attackon the aristocracy who she deemed as hypocritical ”showy but ... not genuine.&; she assaulted individual"s already established morals by presenting a plausible case for bigamy.。

It describes a story about love and hate with revenge. In the 19th century, one pitiful and lonely boy called Heathcliff is brought to Wuthering H eights from Liverpool by Mr.Earnshaw.He stays with Earns haw’s son Hindley and lovely daughter Catherine. Hindley very hates Heathcliff, while Catherine very likes him. But when Earnshaw died,Hindley controls all the family, he comes to power and he treats Heathcliff as servant, so Heathcliff lives a hard life and he is very hating Hindley. And then Cathy does not go away with Heathcliff, and plays with him, at the last she loves him. Mr.Edgar’s house near to the Wuthering Heights, so he often sees the Cathy and he loves Cathy very much, and finally she agrees to marry Edgar. So Heathcliff is very angry and he begin to hate her. As time goes on, Heathcliff brings love, jealousy, hatred, and revenge into the Earnshaws and the Lintons. It does not bring h im real comfort to ruin other people’s happiness.Wuthering Heights was published in 1847,which was much ignore and looks as extremely morbid and violent. But in1850,this thing begin to change, and Wuthering Heights can be printed again, and this the second chance to let reader to read this novel, the action cause so many readers pay more attention to this novel. It is a novel of” outstanding intellectual power with its solitary outcast hero and its image of a love which reaches beyond the grave”(Heather Glen,2004:95). Moore said:” There are few more convincing, less sentimental accounts of passionate love than Wuthering Heights…”In The Novel and the People Ralph Fox, the progressive English literary critic, writes:“Wuthering Heights is certainly the nov el become poetry, it is beyond no doubt one of the most outstanding novels which human talent has ever produced…Cathy and Heathcliff are the revenge of love against the nineteenth century”.Wuthering Heights is the name of a immemorial mountain vill. And in the end Cathy’ s brother----Edgar control the whole family. This story tell about Heathcliff and how it eventually destroys their lives and the lives of those around them, and this story’s main theme is the everlasting love between the heroine, Cathe rine Earnshaw, and her father’s adopted son-----Heathcliff.I.The Love Between Heathcliff and CatherineAs the matter of fact, Heathcliff love Cathy excessive and he allowed not to let anything make Cathy go away with him, even the death for Cathy. Between Heathcliff and Cathy’s love, when they are young they want to love forever, but now their love become screwy, and Catherine’s love is selfish and peacock’s. Although she loves Heathcliff , but she can not marry him because his very poor and he has no reputation, so he will ruin hers. Finally she betrays him, which has exterminated lives of the each other and marries Edgar for whose wealth and high reputation other lives of those around them.1.1ChildhoodThis tragic story happens under the background of Wuthering Heights, the name of a immemorial mountain villa, Cathy marries Edgar for whose wealth and high reputation ,high up on the Yorkshire moors, occupied by the Earnshaw family. In Victorian age, Earnshaw adores a lonely boy and regards him as his own son and calls him Heathcliff and gives him chance to live and learn. Mr.Earnshaw’s signal son Hindley becomes hating him and bitterly jealous him, because the heroine Catherine Earnshaw loves him and plays with him all the daytime and she ignores her brother, and especially much more attention of his father is paid for Heathcliff, whom he regraded him as enemy and begin to find Heath cliff’s trouble. But Cathy is fond of Heathcliff. Then they become good friends and finally they love each other, they begin to react Cathy’s brother. Catherine and Heathcliff ‘s love is very deep and relationship is very close, because they have same opinion. As stated by Qiao Dongyue,“When Cathy and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights, when they live in the solitary and sorrowful place, they understand the fates of each other and rise in rebellion on the basis of their common rate.”(Qiao Dongyue,1997:21) From the social viewpoint, the opinion is best expressed of Arnold Kettle in his introduction to the English works.”Against this degradation Cathy and Heathcliff rebel, hurling their books into the dog-kettle. He, the outcast slummy, turns to the lovely, spirited, fearless girl who alone offers him human understanding and comradeship. And she was born in the world of Wuthing Heights, that to achieve a full humanity, to be true to herself as a human being ,she must associate herself totally with him in his rebellion against the tyranny involve,”(Arnold Kettle,1960:34)Heathcliff and Cathy love each other very much, and have a deep and close friendly ship between two people, and especially one involving romantic, and they are all think that they can love each other till the whole world was destroyed. But unlucky when Mr.Earnshaw died, their love is end.Hindley administers the Wuthering Heights, becomes the master, and then Heathcliff was deprived of all interests by Hindley, even was treated as a person is completely under the control of another person or of a powerful. So he lived in sad and unhappy life,he bears dishonor and continues to stay in the Wuthering Heights ,just in order to companion with his lover----Cathy.”They forgot all the things the minute they were together again.”(Emily Bronte,2011:36)But then they start to be in trouble, and they both regard opposite side as a pole or bar that stand upright and is used as a support in the soul, they have the same opinion, just as Catherine says:” He is more myself than I am. No matter what our souls are made of what, his and m ine are the same”,” If all else remained, and he were gone, the universe would seem a stranger”,” I am Heathcliff. He is still in my mindt;not be happy , but as my own being.” Heathcliff exclaims from within,” I’d not exchange my condition here for Edgar Linton’s at Thrush cross Grange, not for a thousand lives”.(Bronte,2011:65)They were each other’s soul-mate for their whole life.”In front of love, Heathcliff was admirableness.”(Robert Kiely,2003:157)However, Catherine is selfish.Heathcliff and Cathy are truly love each other, but Catherine can not marry someone like him, just because he has no money. Cathy’s love is very selfish, especially she does not want to others laugh at her and even humiliate her. Whatever the reason is, it all proves that her love is selfish. In this novel----Wuthering Heights, it ever describes the thing and it make we understand by the dialogue between Catherine and the housekeeper at Wuthering Heights---- Mrs. Ellen Dean. As Cathy says:“I’ve no more business to have marr y Edgar Linton than I have to be in heaven;and if the wicked man in there had not brought Heathcliff so low, I shouldn’t have thought of it. It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now.”(Bronte,2011:64)It is so ruthless that let Heathcliff hear that his lover is going to marry someone else. At the last, Heathcliff decides to leave the Wuthering Heights, because in this place have two people who he hates, a slut and an enemy. He is very angry.1.2AdulthoodHeathcliff comes backs to Wuthering Heights, when three years later, which is a place full of the memories of his whole life either happy or sad. During these three years, he hates deeply Catherine who betrays their pure love and decides to take revenge on her and Edgar Lindon. And he request Edgar’s sist er Isabella to marry him, but in fact he dose not love her and cruelly maltreats her. However, at the first sight on Catherine since the separation he forgets all the sorrows at once that Catherine has brought to him, and lovers her deeper than before, he love her truly. And he would rather give up all his revenge as long as she agrees to leave Edgar Lindon and stay with him.Heathcliff loves Cathy very much, but love is dreadful, it can let people be crazy.”He neither spoke nor loosed his hold for some five minutes, during which period he bestowed more kisses than ever he gave in his life before.”(Bronte,2011:129)His deep love for Catherine is expressed by all his behaviors, and he misses her terribly. And his fist sentence utter sat the meeting:“O Cathy!O my life! How can I bear it?”(Bronte,2011:129)further explains his intensity love for Cathy. “Don’t torture me till I’m as mad as yourself”,” I could as soon forget you as my existence”(130),“I love my murder--but yours! How can I".(130),these utterances all indicate his strong feelings for Cathy. With undergoing separation for three years, Cathy still loves Heathcliff very much, but she also hates him very much. So when Heathcliff decide to leave, she is in order to take revenge for Heaghcliff,so she decide to marry Edgar, although she dose not love him at all, it is obvious for readers to see Cathy’s selfish. Even when she died, she also blames that it is Heathcliff who murders her as she says:”You and Edgar have broken my heart”,and“You have killed me”(Bronte,2011:129).Though she loves Heathcliff as herself and can not suffer the bitterness when they parts, but at the sametime, it is herself who has parted the two only because she wants to have a predominant and rich life and a superior reputation and social status. Then, her selfish make her get punishment as she says as fellows:“I'm tired of being enclosed here. I’m wearing to escape into that glorious world, and to be always there. ”(Bronte,2011:131)And”If I've done wrong, I’m dying for it. It is enough! You left me to.”(Bronte,2011:132)2.3Reasons for the changeThe outside reason and inside reason-----two main reasons for the change of Catherine's love for Heathcliff. And the inner side of Catherine is bound to the change and while the outside reason that promotes the change.Social background can have a vastly effect on shaping people's characteristics and no doubt that people's relationship is also built on a certain circumstance, and when the circumstance begin to have changes, the relationship will have a relative change. So it is indispensable for us to understand, the society background of the two's love story. This story happened in an turbulent society of Victorian times in United Kingdom, when the Industrial Revolution took place there, which produced a vastly influence on the life of people who lived there, even the whole world. And in Victorian times, people lived with a over-strong feeling of reputation and social status and were split into several levels: the upper class, the rising-middle class, and the lowest one the working class. The government decided to make so many laws to protect the interests of the rich, the gap between wealth person and poor workers, and then followed by a conflict between workers and capitalists.Simultaneously, women and proletariat had a low reputation and social status, whose personal interests had been deprived.“At law women were equal to male criminals, madman and minors, in whichever class they were”.(James,2009:49)The middle class were in terrible condition because their wives and daughters had no reputation and social status and rights, they had to leech on to man---father, husband, brother or son for life and became others' puppets. So in their opinion, they think that marriage was the best way to change themselves, only they marry to the rich person, they can obtain high reputation and status easily. As the result, Cathy decides to choose Edgar as her husband who is wealthy and hashigh reputation, in order to get interests, she does not marry Heathcliff forever, although she loves him. Look! This women is very selfish. It was the one's wealth and status that decided the success or failure of one's marriage, which should be well-matched rather than followed by families.(James,2009:49)If the marriage was against by family, it was more likely to be failure. The youth who loved each other very much and would not abandon each other forever to elope with his or her lover was the last choice. But it is necessary for us to know the elopement means giving up everything forever. They not only had to destroy their own families and forever give up the right of succession for the family and wealth, but also they had to tolerate heavy social pressure.Elopement and adultery were regarded as a shame, in Victorian times, which would destroy their life by public opinion. In a word, they would live a wretched life, struggling with all the society and public opinion. At the end of owned many rights on marriage that so many people hated it but had no way to work out it. In Victorian times, is well illustrated by the love between Vatherine and Heathcliff in the novel, although the marriage was not arranged or forced, it was still far from being free.III. Hatred of Heathcliff3.1Hatred for the two familiesThe rich took colossally pride in their success and property; the secular sense of hierarchy penetrates into the daily life of ordinary people; money and property were nothing but everything,in Victorian times. In literature, the smoky, threatening, and unlucky factory-towns were often represented in religious terms, and compared with hell. The poet William Blake, writing near the turn of nineteenth century, said of England’s” dark Satanic Mills”. As it known to all, feudal thought can master people’s m ind, the spirit of human was oppressed gravely, and the humanity was ruthlessly contorted and destroyed. The ill treatments of people around him give birth to Heath cliff’s hatred for the two families.Otherwise,as far as I am concerned that I would rather think that it is the frantic love for Cathy that had let him out of his mind and wants to take revenge for the two families who have mangy things to deal with their separation. In Victorian times, this novel’s writer, with rebelling spirit and strong des ire of freedom, wrote Wuthering Heights, exposured the evilness of all the society.Hindley and Edgar are the representatives of hierarchy rulers, who distort the soul of Heathcliff by disprising, humiliating and hurting him mercilessly. Finally at the matter of fact,Heathcliff's humanity is badly twisted and at the last Heathcliff becomes mad and moves towards the road of crazy vengeance. The two families are the mirror of the society, so the love tragedy is inevitable.3.2 Hatred for CatherineIn chapter sixteenth, he curses Catherine for the pain. But it is he himself that suffers much more pain than Catherine, his only love.Heathcliff was deeply love Cathy, he suffered so many things to love her, but she was very selfish. She was in order to get high status to choose to betray him, she wanted to live a rich and happy live. So Heathcliff begin to hate her.The day before Heathcliff and Catherine know the Lindon family, they live in their private island unchecked and love each other very much. Living among the elegance of the Lintons transforms Catherine from a coarse youth into a delicate lady. And finally she even treats her marriage like this: If she marries Heathcliff she will be a beggar. Even though she is understand that if she leaves Heathcliff that she can not live forever, but peacocks character reminds her of marring Edgar will let her become the richest women in local place. It can be said that the love from Catherine is his only possession. He can survive with Catherine's love even if he loses everything; but he has nothing without Catherine's love. The temptation of material interests and the bourgeois culture society make her betray her love. It is her transformation and betray that alienate Heathcliff, her soul mate and the love of her life. Catherine’s betray and her marriage with Edgar make Heathcliff lose the source of the life which he has survived on.IV. ConclusionLove is the ever-lasting theme in human's society. But the love of the novel was so painful, not love will make people crazy, no reason, become to let a person very anxious to destroy everything in this world. In that it is a stranded with high socialstatus of the Victorian era, love is luxury, because no matter how much love a person, as long as the other humble family, then this love is doomed to end. Others’ thought will ruin all the things, in Victorian age, the woman have no rights. If the women want to live, they must depend on men, if the man give up the family inheritance just due to love, and finally become the poor person, so I think the man will give up this love, because living far more than feelings. Sometimes we can not evaluate what is right or wrong, just like we can never prove it is first the chicken or the egg. The love is very pure, and so many people want to have it, but when we are in trouble----between love and wealth which is more important, most people must choose wealth. We can not say these people is wrong, we can only say them to have realistic character. If we can not have a true love, we maybe choose love, but in the future? I hope everyone have true love, but if we can not master the love in the end, we must not be crazy.Works CitedBronte,Emily.Wuthering Heights.Nanjing:Yilin press,2011.James,C.Janet.On Bronte’s Wuthering A:Cliffs Notes,Inc,2009Kiely,Robert.“Wuthering Heights:Emily Bronte.”In The Romantic Novel in England,Cambridge:Harvard University Press,2003Glen, Heather. The Cambridge Companion to the Brontes.Shanghai:Shanghai foreign language education press,2004Arnold Kettle. An Introduction to the English Novel,Harper (New York),1960.艾米丽·勃朗特. 呼啸山庄[M]. 杨苡,译. 南京:江苏人民出版社,1980.钱青. 英国19世纪文学史[M]. 北京:外语教学与研究出版社,2006.杨静远. 勃朗特姐妹研究[M]. 北京:中国社会科学出版社,1983.。

But at that time, it seemed to hold little promise, selling very poorly and receiving only a few mixed reviews。

I found this in our school library,I chose this book because the title attracted me。

The book is structured around two parallel love stories, the first half of the novel centering on the love between Catherine and Heathcliff, while the less dramatic second half features the developing love between young Catherine and Hareton。

In contrast to the first, the latter tale ends happily, restoring peace and order to Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange。

In the story, the two houses, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, represent opposing worlds and values。

The book review on Wuthering Heights
英语师范 朱彤1104401012

Wuthering Heights (1847) is a novel of love and revenge written by Emily

Bronte, a great writer of British. It was her first and only published work. Wuthering
Heights is the name of the farmhouse on the Yorkshire moors, a remote and solitary
place, where the story unfolds.
The story starts when a tenant Mr. Lockwood visit his landlord Heathcliff. After
a horrifying night at Heights, Mr. Lockwood desired to know the experience of the
host. Then Nelly the maid of both houses as the teller started the story. Mr.Earnshaw,
the old master of Wuthering Heights, adopted an unknown boy after he finished his
journey and called him Heathcliff. After Mr.Earnshaw died, his brutal son Hindley
who hated Heathcliff deeply abused him and treated him as a servant. On the contrary,
Mr.Earnshaw’s daughter Catherine was still willing to work and play with him. Later,
because of an accident, she lived in Thrushcross Grange for five weeks. After she
came back, she started to laugh Heathcliff’s dirty. But she still treat him as her close
friend and as the time went she came to fall in love with him just as Heathcliff did at
the same time. Later, because of her vanity, she loved her companion but she didn’t
want to degrade herself so he decided to marry Edger. So Heathcliff decided to leave
Wuthering Heights. After three years Heathcliff returned to Wuthering Heights and
began his endless revenge. He wrested the property of Hindley through gambling. He
made Catherine heartbroken. He pretended to love Edgar Linton’s sister, Isabella, and
lured her to marry him. He acquired a fortune and used his extraordinary power of
will to acquire both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, the estate of Edger
Linton. However, after finishing all his revenge, he did not feel happy at all, and
finally he died queerly with a dream to meet Catherine.
The whole story was covered with a cold gloomy and depressed atmosphere. The
love between Catherine and Heathcliff was tragic and touching. The gothic style
added the novel mystery. However, among all these characters, I like the servant Nelly
most. In my opinion she is an amiable straight and brave lady, and she is also very
devoted and smart. She is a very important role in the story. To some extent, it is she
that prompted the development of Catherine and Heathcliff’s love process. She was
always in a dilemma, for Heathcliff used to compel her to create opportunities in
order to date Catherine. After Catherine’s death, she took care of her daughter
Catherine Linton, who is kind and sweet but sometimes haughty and mischievous just
like her mother. She liked this girl and tried to help her get happiness though little
Catherine was cheated by Heathcliff’s trick. Nelly tried her best to protect her host.
After Catherine Linton was forced to live in Wuthering Heights, she often ask for her
condition and cared her. Her devotion touched me deeply, so I like her very much.
While as for Harton, he was also the victim of Heathcliff’s revenge. What shocked
most was the scene that when Heathcliff died, he cried sincerely and keep accompany
with the corpse for a long time. I think he was quite poor, he obeyed Heathcliff
devotedly even he take his part and fight his father. He was not taught writing and
learning because of Heathcliff’s revenge. Fortunately, his ending was not very bad.
Shakespeare has said that love is blind. Yes, it does. And it also may make a
person crazy or do something that unimaginable. It is so horror. Just like Heathcliff in
the novel who has the utmost love with hatred and the thought of revenge made him
become very crude and relentless.
