People built huge sacred bonfires(神圣 的篝火) and animals and crops were sacrificed to(供奉) the Gods for protection, and to help scare ghosts away(吓跑). The Celts also wore costumes to disguise(假扮) themselves, in an attempt to confuse the spirits wandering on the Earth.
October 31st is Halloween(万圣 节)
Halloween is great fun for children. They dress up as ghosts(鬼), witches(女巫). Small children go ‘Trick-or –Treat(不给糖就捣蛋)’. They put on strange masks and frightening costumes(服装) every Halloween. Some children even paint their faces to look like monsters (怪物) , knock on doors, and shout, 'Trick or Treat!' People almost always choose to give them candy as a treat, instead of choosing to receive a trick from the children. Adults or grown-ups sometimes 'trick or treat' their friends, too. Usually the 'treat' is a glass of wine or some small gifts back to the ancient Celtic(凯尔 特人) festival of Samhain(萨温节) over 2,000 years ago.
• For the Celtic people, the New Year was celebrated on November 1st of every year. This time of year was often associated with human death.
• It is one of the oldest holidays, celebrated in several countries around the globe including the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Latin America, New Zealand, Spain and occasionally (偶尔)in parts of Australia.
The Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary(分界线) between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred(模糊不清) as the dead searched for the afterlife.
