I am. I'm telling you感觉生命会受到威胁一样I met a couple of guys, they may like..我碰到几位老兄他们对我说Hey, we love you Denzel嗨丹泽尔我们都喜欢你But you know, you walk around with that hat on但你知不知道当你戴上那帽子的时候we don't care who you are我们才不在乎你是谁呢So you'll be happy to see所以今天还好that I'm not wearing my Yankee cap today大家没看到我戴着洋基队的帽子来这儿But I am wearing my Yankee socks, my Yankee T-shirt我穿着洋基队的袜子和T恤my Yankee Jack shirts洋基队的夹克衫and my Yankees underwear and my Yankee toe warmers还有底裤和暖脚贴but not my Yankee cap但不会带洋基队的帽子but still, I'll be honest with you同样我也要说句真心话I'm a little nervous我还有点紧张I'm not speaking at a graduation of this magnitude我还没在这种规模的毕业典礼上讲过话it's a little overwhelming有点缺乏心理准备This is out of my comfort zone这让我不知所措and you dress me up in army fatigues你们可以让我穿上陆军迷彩服or throw me on top of a moving train或是让我跳上飞奔的火车someone said unstoppable or..有人刚才说过这个ask me to play Malcolm X, Rubin Hurricane Carter让我扮演马尔科姆·艾克斯或是鲁宾·卡特or Alonzo from Training Day. I can do that或是《训练日》里面的阿伦佐这都没问题But a commencement speech? It's a very serious affair但是毕业典礼呢？这是非常郑重的活动and a very different ballgame和以往参加的活动大有不同There's literally thousands and thousands of people here台下坐着成千上万的听众And for those who say有人会说Well, you're a movie star, millions of people watch you你可是电影明星哦无数的人都看着你and watch you speak all the time无数人看着你讲话Oh, that's true. that's technically true没错严格意义上讲这话不假But I'm not actually there in the theater但我从没坐在电影院里watching them watching me. I think that make sense看着台下的观众在看我我觉得是这个道理I mean I'm not there when they cough, or fidget around我是说当他们咳嗽或烦躁的时候or pull out their iPhone and text their boyfriend或是掏出iPhone给男友发短信的时候or scratch their behinds, or whatever is it或是在找挠后背之类的known when in the movie theater就是在电影院里常坐的事情But from up here, I can see every single one of you但在这里我可以看到你们每一个人And that makes me uncomfortable这让我感觉怪怪的So please, don't pull out your iPhones and texts所以拜托大家不要掏出手机发短信no texts to your boyfriend until after I'm done, please不要给男友发短信直到我讲话结束拜托了But if you have to scratch your behinds, I mean但如果你要挠挠后背的话I understand, go ahead我能理解请便吧I was thinking about the speech, what I should say我曾思考着要来这里讲些什么I figured the best way to keep your attention我觉得如果要让你们专心听我说话would be to talk about something, you know最好讲一些……你们懂的really like juicy Hollywood stuff like..比如好莱坞的花边新闻一类的事I thought I could talk about me and Russell Crowe我曾想过要讲讲我和罗素·克洛二人getting into arguments on the set of American Gangster or..在拍摄《美国黑帮》时的激烈争论But no. You're a group of high-minded intellectuals但是放弃了毕竟你们都是高尚的知识分子You're not interested in that才不会喜欢听这些呢Or maybe not但也说不定哦I thought about a private moment I had at backstage我也想过要讲讲我和安吉丽娜·茱莉二人with Angelina Jolie in her dressing room backstage我俩在她的后台更衣室里相遇的场面at the Oscars在奥斯卡颁奖典礼上But I say, no, I don't think so. This is an Ivy League school但后来又觉得不妥这里可是常春藤名校I mean, Angelina Jolie half-naked in a dressing room我是说安吉丽娜?朱莉在那里赤裸半身who wants to hear about that? No one, no one, no one, no one谁会有兴趣听这个？没人没人愿意This is Penn这里可是宾夕法尼亚大学That stuff wouldn't go over well here这些东西不应该出现在这里Maybe at Drexel, but not here可能会出现在德雷克塞尔大学但不会在这Whoo! I'm in trouble now这会我可惹麻烦了So, I was back to square one, feeling the pressure所以我白折腾了一圈压力真的好大So now you're probably thinking现在你们可能会认为if it was gonna be this difficult, this was pressure既然这么难为你压力这么大why did I even accept today's invitation in the first place?为什么你当初要答应来这里演讲呢？Well, you know, my son goes here. That's number one好首先大家知道我的儿子在这that's a good reason这个理由不错And I always like to check to see how my money's being spent另外我也想看看我的钱花的值不值And I'm sure there's some parents out there我相信台下有一些家长who can relate to what I'm talking about他们能理解我的意思Yeah. Hmm, everybody upstairs没错就是上排那些人And there were other good reasons for me to show up我来这里的原因不止这个Sure, I got an Academy Award诚然我获得过奥斯卡金像奖but I never had something called Magic Meatball但我还没在餐车前排队等候半个小时后after waiting in line for half an hour at a food truck品尝魔法狮子头的味道Yes, I've talked face-to-face with President Obama诚然我曾和奥巴马总统面对面交流过but I never met a guy named Kweder但从没跟一个叫Kweder的家伙说过话who sings bad cover songs at Smokes on a Tuesday night他星期二会在Smokes那里高唱不良歌曲I've never been an Bui's我从来不是Bui成员I've never been an Hemo's也没成为Himo派Yes, I have played a detective battling demons诚然我扮演过与恶魔斗争的侦探but I've never been to a school in my life但是我从来没有去过一所学校where the squirrel population has gone bananas那里的松鼠群体已经完全失控I mean they break into the dorm rooms闯进学生宿舍they walked around the campus畅游于校园I think I saw some carrying books on the way to class我还看到有些松鼠拿着书本去上课了So I had to be here. I had to come所以我今天一定要来我必须来even though I was afraid I might make a fool of myself尽管我害怕自己会出洋相In fact, if you really want to know the truth其实如果你们真的想知道真相I had to come exactly because..正是因为我有可能出洋相……I had to come exactly because I might make a fool of myself正是因为我有可能出洋相所以我才一定要来You know what am I talking about?我为什么这么说呢？Well, here it is我的意思是I've found that nothing in life is worthwhile我发现如果你不冒险unless you take risks生活中的一切都会是毫无价值Nothing所有一切Nelson Mandela said纳尔逊·曼德拉曾说过There is no passion to be found playing small如果安于现状生活将平淡无奇in settling for a life that's less尤其对于那些有能力than the one you're capable of living去过更精彩人生的人来说Now I'm sure in your experiences我肯定在你们过去的经历中in school, in applying to college无论是在学校在申报大学in picking your major挑选专业in deciding what you want to do with life还是在你们决定人生中要做些什么时I'm sure people have told you总会有人提醒你们to make sure you have something to fall back on总会有人提醒你们要记着给自己留条后路to make sure you have something to fall back on, Honey提醒你们说亲爱的为自己留条后路吧But I've never understood that concept但我对此表示无法理解Having something to fall back on要留后路If I'm going to fall如果我会跌倒失败I don't want to fall back on anything, except my faith我不想留什么后路除了自己的信念I want to fall forward我要向前倒I figure at least this way这样至少我能看见I'll see what I'm about to hit我会栽在什么问题上Fall forward向前倒Here's what I mean我来讲讲它的含义Reggie Jackson struck out雷吉·杰克逊在他的职业生涯中2,600 times in his career曾被2600次三振出局the most in the history of baseball棒球历史上的最高纪录But you don't hear about the strikeouts但你不会听到这些三振出局的事People remember the home runs人们只记得他的全垒打Fall forward向前倒Thomas Edison conducted 1,000 failed experiments爱迪生曾经有1000次试验失败Did you know that? I didn't know that你知道么？我以前也不知道because the 1,001 was the light bulb而第1001次试验他发明了电灯泡Fall forward向前倒Every failed experiment is one step closer to success每次失败都意味着你离成功靠近了一步You've got to take risks你必须去冒险And I'm sure you've probably heard that before我想你们以前一定也听过这些But I want to talk about why it is so important但是我想告诉你们这为什么如此重要I've got three reasons, and then you can pick up your iPhones我要说三个理由然后你们就可以玩iPhone了First, you will fail at some point in your life首先你在生命中一定会经历失败Accept it. You will lose接受这个事实吧失败是无可避免的You will embarrass yourself你会感到窘迫You will suck at something. There is no doubt about it你会在某件事上逊透了这点毫无疑问That's probably not a traditional message for a graduation ceremony也许这不是常规毕业典礼上该讲的话But, hey, I'm telling you, embrace it但是诸位我希望你们能接受失败Because it's inevitable因为它不可避免And I should know而且我自己知道In the acting business, you fail all the time在演艺界失败是常事Early on my career我刚出道时I auditioned for a part in a Broadway musical我去试镜某部百老汇音乐剧中的角色perfect role for me, I thought当时我想这对我是再适合不过的角色了except for the fact that I can't sing除了我不会唱歌So I'm in the wings. I'm about to go on stage当我在后台准备上台的时候but the guy in front of me我发现我前面表演的那个家伙he singing like Pavarotti, he's just..他唱得简直就像帕瓦罗蒂he's just going on, and on, and on他在那里唱啊唱and I am just shrinking我感觉自己在变得越来越渺小I'm getting smaller and smaller越来越小so they said, Oh, thank you very much. Thank you very much评委说谢谢非常感谢You'll be hearing from us我们会给你消息的So I come out with my little sheet music然后我出台了带着我的乐谱and it was Just My Imagination by the Temptations我要唱的是诱惑合唱团的《我的幻想》that's what I came up with我准备的就是这个So I hand it to the accompanist, and she looks at it我把乐谱递给伴奏者她看了看乐谱and looks at me and looks at the director, and just like..看了看我又看看指挥然后这幅表情So, I start to, you know, I'm gonna sing like..我就那样开始唱了and they're not saying anything他们一言不发So I'm thinking I must be getting better所以我以为一定是我表现得越来越好了so I start getting into it正当我开始全身投入的时候the director said, Thank you very much, Mr. Washington导演说非常感谢华盛顿先生Thank you谢谢So, I assume that I didn't get the job我想我肯定是得不到那份工作了But the next part of the audition, he called me back不曾想他们叫我去参加下一回合的试演the next part of the audition is the acting part of the audition试演的下一回合是表演I know I'm... Hey, OK, maybe I can't sing, but I know I can act我想虽然我歌唱得不好但我可以表演啊So they paired me with this guy他们把我跟刚才那家伙安排在一组and again, I didn't know about musical theatre然而我仍然对音乐厅全然不知and musical theatre is big音乐厅很大so they can reach everyone all the way in the back, of a stadium like所以发声要注意让后排的人都能听见and I'm more from a realistic, naturalistic kind of acting而我的表演方式更像是现实生活中的自然流露where you... you know, you actually talked to the person next to you当时我的表演是跟旁边那人说话so I don't know what my line was...my line was what..我并不知道该怎么说我的台词我的台词是hand me the cup把杯子递给我And his line was他的台词是Well, I would hand you the cup my dear好亲爱的我会把杯子给你的the cup would be there to be handed to you杯子会递到你的手上and I said然后我说OK. Should I give you the cup back?好那我还要把杯子还给你吗？Oh, yes, you should give the cup back to me是呀你要把它还给我啊bacause that is my cup因为那是我的杯子and it should be given back to me应该把它还给我I didn't get the job我这工作又泡汤了But here's the thing: I didn't quit. I didn't fall back但重要的是我没有放弃我没有往后倒I walked out of there to prepare for the next audition我从那里出来就开始准备下一次试演and the next audition, and the next audition再下一次然后再下一次的试演I prayed. I prayed, and I prayed我不断祈祷祈祷再祈祷but I continued to fail, and I failed, and I failed但是我还是不断失败失败再失败But it didn't matter. Because you know what?但这并不要紧你知道为什么吗？there's an old saying古话说得好You hang around a barbershop long enough在理发店外徘徊时间长了sooner or later you will get a haircut迟早有人会帮你理发So, you will catch a break, and I did catch a break你会等到你的机会的而我确实也等到了机会Last year I did a play called Fences on Broadway去年我在百老汇演一部叫《Fences》的音乐剧someone talked about it. I won a Tony Award刚才有人提到了我还因此获得了Tony奖And I didn't have to sing for it, by the way当然在这出戏里我并不需要唱歌And here's the kicker还有最关键的是it was at the Court Theater这部音乐剧是在寇特剧院上演的it was at the same theater也就是30年前that I failed that first audition 30 years prior我第一次试演失败的那家剧院The point is, and I'll put up the pace所以我要说的就是我会加快速度the point is, every graduate here today今天在座的所有毕业生has the training and the talent to succeed你们都有了成功所必需的学习和才能But do you have guts to fail然而你们有接受失败的勇气吗？Here's my second point about failure关于失败我要说的第二个要点是If you don't fail, you're not even trying如果你没有失败过说明你都没有好好尝试过I'll say it again我再说一遍If you don't fail, you're not even trying如果你没有失败过说明你都没有好好尝试过My wife told me this expression我太太跟我说过这句经典的话To get something you never had要得到你从未拥有过的东西you have to do something you never did你必须做你从来没有做过的事Les Brown, a motivational speaker, he made an analogy about this励志演讲者莱斯·布朗对此打过一个比方it says讲的是imagine you're on your deathbed想象你快要去世了and standing around your deathbed围绕着在你临终的床沿的are the ghosts representing your unfilled potential是代表你未了心愿的幽魂The ghosts of the ideas you never acted on那些你没有付诸行动的想法的幽魂The ghosts of the talents you didn't use那些属于你却从没被启用的天赋的幽魂And they're standing around your bed而它们都围在你的床沿Angry. Disappointed. Upset生气失望沮丧They say它们说We came to you, because you could have brought us to life我们来见你因为你原本可以给予我们生命they say它们说And now we go to the grave together现在我们不得不跟你一起进入坟墓So I ask you today所以今天我要问你们How many ghosts are going to be around your bed在你离开这个世界的时候when your time comes?会有多少这样的幽魂围在你的床沿？You invested a lot in your education你们在教育上投入了很多And people invested in you别人也在你身上投入了很多And let me tell you而且让我告诉你the world needs your talents这个世界需要你的才华Man, does it ever从未如此迫切过I just got back from Africa, like just 2 days ago我两天前刚从非洲回来So I'm rambling on this kind of jet leg所以我现在是在时差影响下胡言乱语I just got back from South Africa, that's a beautiful country我刚从南非回来那是一个美丽的国度but there are places there with terrible poverty that need help但那里有些地方仍然非常贫穷需要帮助And Africa is just the tip of the iceberg而且非洲只是冰山一角The Middle East needs your help. Japan needs your help中东需要你们日本需要你们Alabama need your help阿拉巴马州需要你们Tennessee need your help田纳西州需要你们Louisiana needs your help路易斯安那州需要你们Philadelphia needs your help费城需要你们The world needs a lot, and we need it from you这个世界需要很多我们同样需要we really do, we need it from you young people我们真的需要需要你们在座的各位年轻人I mean, I'm not speaking for the rest of us up here我不代表其他坐在台上面的人but I know I'm getting a little grayer但是我知道自己已经老了也有白头发了we need it from you, the young people我们需要你们在座的年轻人because, remember this请记住So you gotta get out there出去闯吧you gotta give it everything you've got你要投入自己的一切whether it's your time, your talent, your prayers, or your treasures不论是你的时间还是才华祈福还是财富Because remember this因为你要记住You'll never see a U-Haul behind a hearse灵车后面不会有搬家卡车I'll say it again我再说一遍You'll never see a U-Haul behind a hearse灵车后面不会有搬家卡车You can't take it with you你不可能把它们一起带走The Egyptians tried it, and all they got was robbed埃及人试过带走的后来都被盗了So, the question is, what are you going to do with what you have?所以问题在于你要怎么利用你拥有的东西？I'm not talking how much you have我不是在说你拥有多少Some of you are business majors在座的诸位有人学读商科Some of you are theologians, nurses, sociologists有人会成为神学家护士或是社会学家Some of you have money. Some of you have patience有些人有钱有些人拥有耐心Some have kindness. Some have love有些人有善心有些人心中充满爱Some of you have the gift of long-suffering有些人拥有历经艰苦而带来的果实Whatever it is, whatever your gift is不论你拥有的是什么你的天赋是什么what are you going to do with what you have?你打算怎么利用它们呢？Alright, now here's my last point about failure好了现在我要讲关于失败的最后一点Sometimes it's the best way to figure out where you're going有时候失败是找到方向的最好方法Your life will never be a straight path生活不会是一条直线I began at Fordham University as a pre-med student我最初是佛罕大学医科的预科生I took a course called Cardiac... Morph...我学过一门课程叫心...形...I still can't say it我连这个都说不好Cardiac Morphogenesis心脏形态学I couldn't read it I could't say it, and I an sure couldn't pass it我连这个也读不好理所当然也就挂科了So, then I decided to go pre-law, then journalism后来我就决定读法律预科再后来是新闻学And with no academic focus不知道应该专注于什么学科my grades took off in their own direction我的成绩进入了它自己的轨道Yeah, down没错一路向下I was a 1.8 GPA, one semester有一个学期我的平均分只有1.8and the university very politely suggested学校很体面地建议我it might be better to take some time off考虑休学一段时间I was 20 years old, I was at my lowest point我当时20岁我的人生到了最低谷And then one day, and I remember the exact day有一天我清楚记得那一天March 27th, 1975, I was helping out in the beauty shop1975年3月27日我在母亲的美容店里帮忙my mother owned a beauty shop in Mount Vernon我母亲在Mount Vernon开了一家美容店and there was an older woman来了一位老妇人who was considered one of the elders of the town来了一位应该是当时全镇最年长之一的老妇人I don't know personally, but I was looking in the mirror之前我跟她没有来往我当时在看着镜子every time I looked in the mirror每次我看镜子I could see her behind me, and she was staring at me都可以看到她在我后面she just kept looking at me她正盯着我看every time I looked at her, she kept giving me these strange looks她就那样看着我她的眼神总是怪怪的So, she finally took the drier off her head后她把头上的风干机挪开and said something... she said something I'll never forget跟我说了一句我永远不会忘记的话First of all, she said她先是说Somebody give me a piece of paper过来个人给我一张纸Give me a piece of paper给我一张纸she said她说Young boy, I have a prophecy, a spiritual prophecy小伙子我有种预感一个发自心灵的预感She said you are going to travel the world她说你会周游世界and speak to millions of people和上百万人沟通交流now I'll remind you, I'm 20 years old, I'm flunked out school我得提醒大家我当时20岁刚辍学回家In fact, like a wise-ass, I'm thinking to myself事实上我自作聪明地认为Maybe she's got something in a crystal ball她也许是通过一个水晶球about me getting back to college in the fall算出我会在秋季重返学校的But maybe she was on to something但也许她真的预见到了什么Because later that summer因为那年夏天晚些时候while working as a counselor at a YMCA camp in Connecticut当我在康涅狄格州一个YMCA夏令营做指导时we put on a talent show for the campers我们给参加者来了一场才艺展示演出And after the show, another counselor came up to me and asked演出结束后另一位指导来问我Have you ever thought of acting? 其实我来这里看过好多场篮球比赛了。
我儿子是PALESTRA的篮球队队员。
对，他是篮球队的。
不过教练给他的上场时间不够多，当然这个我们可以之后再好好谈谈。
而且我对艾伦教练在这方面的“提高”还是满意的。
真的，确实满意。
我希望球队能在将来取得成功。

It's always been great to be on the Penn campus. I've been here before a lot of times for basketball games. My son played at the Palestra, played on the basketball team. Yeah, that's right, play on the basketball team. Coach didn't give him enough playing time, but we'll talk about that later. No, I’m really pleased with the progress that Coach Allen has made. No I did, I really am. And I hope them the best success in the future.Still, I’ll be honest with you: I’m a little nervous. I am not used to speaking at a graduation of this magnitude. It is a little overwhelming. It's out of my comfort zone. You dress me up in army fatigues. Throw me on top of a moving train. Someone said "Unstoppable". Or ask me to play Malcolm X, Rubin Hurricane Carter, Alonzo from Training Day: I can do that. But a commencement speech? It’s a very serious affair.It's a very different ballgame. There’s literally thousands and thousands of people here.And for those who say—you're a movie star, millions of people watch you speak all the time…That's true. Yes, that’s technically true. But I’m not actually in the theater—watching them watching me. I think that makes sense. I mean I'm not there when they cough… or fidget around… or pull out their iPhone and text their boyfriend… or scratch their behinds. Whatever they are known to be doing in a movie theater. But from up here: I can see every single one of you. And that makes me uncomfortable. So please, don’t pull out your iPhone and do n't text your boyfriend until after I’m done. But if you need to scratch your behinds, I understand. Go ahead.I was thinking about the speech, what should I say. I figured the best way to keep your attention, would be to talk about some really juicy Hollywood stuff. Like I thought about, me and Russell Crowe getting into some arguments on the set of American Gangster…but no. You’re a group of high-minded intellectuals. You’re not interested in that. Oh, maybe not. I thought about that “private” moment. I h ad backstage with Angelina Jolie in the dressing room at the Oscars? But I say no. I don’t think so. This is an Ivy League school. Angelina Jolie half-naked in her dressing room…? Who wants to hear about that? No one, no one, no one, no one, this is Penn. That stuff would never go over well here. Maybe at Drexel—but not over here. I’m in trouble now. I was back to square one—and feeling the pressure. So now you're probably thinking. If it was gonna be this difficult, this much pressure. Why’d I even accept today’s invitation? In the first place? Well, you know my son goes here. That’s No.1. That’s a good reason. And I always like to check to see how my money’s being spent. And I’m sure there's some parents out there who can relate to what I'm talking about! There everybody upstairs. And there were some other good reasons for me to show up. Sure, I got an Academy Award, but I never had something called “Magic Meatballs” after waiting in line for half an hour at a food truck. Yes, I talkedface-to-face with President Obama, but I never talked face-to-face with a guy named “Kweeder”, who sings bad songs at Smokes on a Tuesday night. I've never been a buis, I've never been a himos. Yes, I've played a detective battling demons, but I’ve never been to a school in my life. Where the squirrel population has gone bananas, breaking into the dorm rooms and taking over campus. I think I saw some carrying books on the way to class! So I had to be here. I had to come… even though I was afraid I might make a fool of myself. I n fact… if you really want to know the truth: I had to come… exactly because, I had to come exactly because I might make a fool of myself. What am I talking about? Here it is: I’ve found that nothing in life is worthwhile unless you take risks. Nothing. Ne lson Mandela said: “There is no passion to be found playing small in settling for a life that's less than the one you're capable of living.” I’m sure in your experiences—in school, in applying to college… in pickingyour major in deciding what you want to do with life people have told you to make sure you have something to “fall back on.” make sure you have something to “fall back on” honey. But I've never understood that concept, having something to fall back on. If I'm going to fall, I don't want to fall back on anything, except my faith. I want to fall… forward. At least I figure that way I'll see what I'm about to hit. Fall forward. Here's what I mean: Reggie Jackson struck out twenty-six-hundred times in his career the most in the history of baseball. But you don't hear about the strikeouts. People remember the home runs. Fall forward. Thomas Edison conducted 1,000 failed experiments. Did you know that? I didn't know that. Because #1,001 was the light bulb. Fall forward. Every failed experiment is one step closer to success. You've gotto take risks. And I'm sure you've probably heard that before. But I want to talk to you about why it’s so important. I’ve got three reasons—and then you can pick up your iPhones. First… you will fail at some point in your life. Accept it. You will lose. You will embarrass yourself. You will suck at something. There is no doubt about it. That’s probably not a traditional message for a graduation ceremony. But, hey I’m telling you—embrace it. Because it’s inevitable. And I sh ould know: In the acting business, you fail all the time. Early on in my career, I auditioned for a part in a Broadway musical. A perfect role for me, I thought except for the fact that I can’t sing. So I'm in the wings, about to go on stage but the guy in front of me, he is singing like... like... like Pavarotti just go on and on and on and on. And I am just shrinking getting smaller and smaller... so I said thank you, thank you very much, you'll be here from us. So I come out with my sheet music and it wa s “Just My Imagination” by the Temptations, that’s what I came up with. So I hand it to the accompanist, and she looks at it and looks at me and looks at the director... so I start to sing and so they're not saying anything. I think I must be getting better, so I start getting into it. They said "thank you, thank you very much, Mr. Washington, thank you." So I assume I didn't get the job. But the next part of audition they call me back. The next part of the audition is the acting part of audition. I figure, I can’t sing, but I know I can act. So they paired me with this guy and again I didn't know about musical theatre. And musical theatre is big, so they can reach everyone all the way in the back of the stadium and I was more from a realistic naturalistic kind of acting way. You know you actually talk to the person next to you. So I don't know what my line was, my line was "hand me the cup" his line was, “Wel l, I will hand you the cup, my dear, my cup will be there to be handed to you." I said, OK, well, should I give you the cup back? Oh yeah, you should give it back to me, because you know that is my cup. And that it should be given back to me. I didn't get the job. But here's the thing: I didn’t quit. I didn't fall back. I walked out of there to prepare for the next audition, and the nextaudition, and the next audition. I prayed and I prayed, and I prayed but I continued to fail, fail and fail. But it didn’t matter. Because you know what? There is an old saying: you hang around a barbershop long enough, sooner or later you are gonna get a haircut. You will catch a break. And I did catch a break. Last year I did a play called Fences on Broadway someone talked about it and I won a Tony Award. And I didn’t have to sing, by the way. And here’s the kicker—it was at the Court Theater, it's the same theater that I failed that first audition 30 years prior. The point is, and I will pick up the page. The point is, every graduate here today has the training and the talent to succeed. But do you have the guts to fail? Here's my second point about failure: If you don't fail… you’re not even trying. I'll say it again. If you don't fail… you're not even trying. My wife told me this great expression: “To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.” Les Brown, a motivational speaker, made an analogy about this. Imagine you're on your deathbed and standing around your deathbed are the ghosts representing your unfulfilled potential. The ghosts of the ideas you never acted on. The ghosts of the talents you didn't use. And they're standing around your bed. Angry. Disappointed. And upset. “We came to you because you could have brought us to life,” they say. “And now we have to go to the grave together.” So I ask you today: How many ghosts are gonna be around your bed when your time comes? You have invested a lot in your education. And people have invested in you. And let me tell you, the world needs your talents more than it does ever. I just got back from Africa two days ago. So I am rambling on because I am jetlegged. I just got back from South Africa. It's a beautiful country, but there are places there with terrible poverty that needs help. And Africa is just the tip of the iceberg.The Middle East needs your help.Japan needs your help.Alabama needs your help and Tennessee needs your help.Louisiana needs your help.Philadelphia needs your help.The world...The world needs a lot—and we need it from you, we really do, we need it from you, young people. I mean I am not speaking for the rest of us up here. I know I am getting a little greyer. We need it from you, the young people. So remember this. So get outthere. You gotta give it everything you've got, whether it's your time, your talent, your prayers, or your treasures. Because remember this: You’ll never see a U-Haul behind a hearse. I'll say that again. You’ll never see a U-Haul behind a hearse. I will say it again you'll never see a U-Haul behind a hearse. You can't take it with you. The Egyptians tried it and all they got was robbed!So the question is: So what are you going to do with what you have?And I'm not talking how much you have.Some of you are business majors.Some of you are theologians, nurses, sociologists.Some of you have money.Some of you have patience.Some of you have kindness.Some of you have love. Some of you have the gift of long-suffering.Whatever it is, whatever your gift is.-What are you going to do with what you have?Alright now, here's my last point about failure:Sometimes it's the best way to figure out where you're going.Your life will never be a straight path. I began at Fordham University as a pre-med student. I took a course called “Cardiac Morphogenesis.” I still can't say it. “Cardiac Morphogenesis.” I couldn’t read it. I couldn't say it… and I am sure I couldn't pass it. Then I decided to go into pre-law. Then journalism. With no academic focus, my grades took off in their own direction: down. I was a 1.8 GPA in one semester, and the university very politely suggested it might be better to take some time off. I was 20 years old. I was at my lowest point. And then one day—and I remember the exact day: March 27th, 1975. I was helping my mother in her beauty shop. My mother owned a beauty shop up in Mount Vernon. There was this old woman who was considered one of the eldest in the town. I didn't know her personally. I was looking in the mirror. Every time I looked into the mirror, I can see it behind me. She was staring at me. She just kept looking at me. Every time I looked at her, she kept givingme these strange looks. She finally took the drier off her head and said something to me I’ll never forget: first of all, somebody gives me a piece of paper. She said,” Young boy,”“I have a prophecy: a spiritual prophecy: she said you are going to travel the world and speak to millions of people.” I mind you I'm twenty years old. I've flunk out of school. In fact, like a wise-ass, I’m thinking to myself: Maybe she's got something in that crystal ball about me getting back to school next fall? But maybe she was onto something. Because later that summer, while working as a counselor at a YMCA camp in Connecticut, we put on a talent show for the campers. After the show, another counselor came up to me and asked: “Have you ever thought about acting? You’re good at that.” When I got back to Fordham that fall. I got in. I changed my major once again for the last time. And in the years that followed just as that woman prophesized I have traveled the world and I have spoken to millions of people through my movies. Millions who—up till today I couldn’t see while I was talking to them. And they couldn't see me, because they could only see the movie. They couldn't see the real me. But I see you today. And I'm encouraged by what I see. And I'm strengthened by what I see. And I love what I see. one more page, and I'll shut up. Let me conclude with this one final point. Actually the president kind of brought it up. It has to do with the movie "Philadelphia". She stole my material. Many years ago, I did this movie called "Philadelphia". We filmed some of the scenes right here on campus. Philadelphia came out in 1993, when most of you were probably still in diapers. Some of the professors, too. I cracked up myself. But it was a good movie. Rent it on Netflix. It's a good movie. I get 23 cents every time you rent it. Parents up there, rent it from Netflix please. Tell your friends, too! It's about a man, played by Tom Hanks, who's fired from his law firm because he has AIDS. He wants to sue the firm, but no one's willing to represent him until a homophobic, ambulance-chasing lawyer—played by yours truly takes on the case. In a way, if you watch the movie, you'll see everything I’m talking about today. You'll see what I mean about taking risks or being willing to fail. Because taking a risk is not just about going for a job.It's also about knowing what you know and what you don't know. It’s about being open to people and to ideas. 但是（要知道）我本人可不在电影院，看着观众看着我，我想这话语法没错吧。
要知道当观众咳嗽、左右挪动或者摸出他们的iPhone，给男朋友发短信，或者抓背挠痒，反正不管他们在影院做什么，我其实都看不到。
但是从这里，我能看到你们每个人。
这让我不知所措。
所以在我讲完之前，请别拿出iPhone跟男朋友发短信。
不过如果你要挠挠后背，没问题，我可以理解。
关于这个演讲，我一直在想我该讲些什么。
我知道最能吸引你们注意力的方法就是爆些好莱坞的内幕。
比如我想到（可以说），（有一次)我跟罗素·克罗是怎么在拍摄《美国黑帮》的现场发生争吵的。
不过我又想你们是高层次的“知识分子”，应该不会对这感兴趣。
是不是？我还想到可以说说，我和安吉丽娜·朱莉在幕后的那个“私人”时刻，在奥斯卡的化妆间里。
不过我想这好像也不合适，这可是所常春藤学校啊！安吉丽娜·朱莉半裸着在化妆间里，谁会想听这个？没人，没人想听。

它提醒我们让孩子从小就树立追求的方向是多么的重要。
这句话在我的身上得到了验证。
每当想起这句话，我就会想起催生我的梦想的地方和我的良师益友。
是他们给我精神支柱，使我一直走到了今天。
这些年我也明白了一个道理：无论你以什么为生，只要你做得出色，就会有人为你喝彩。
