曼彻斯特大学始建于1824年，是六所“红砖大学”之首，该校校友中共有25位诺贝尔奖得主。

如今的曼彻斯特大学由维多利亚曼彻斯特大学和曼彻斯特理工大学(UMIST)合并而成，于2004年获得皇家许可认证。

谢菲尔德大学的建校历史可追溯到1828年谢菲尔德医学院成立之时。

1897年，谢菲尔德医学院与“福斯学院”及“谢菲尔德技术学院”两所学术单位结合组成“谢菲尔德大学学院”。
