Students’ Rating of Their Teachers

Nowadays, it has become as common in colleges and universities for students to grade teachers as f or teachers to grade students. In some universities students’ rating has even become the only source of information on teaching effectiveness.

This, however, has caused great controversy. Some are in favor of the rating system. They hold that sinc e students attend the teachers’ classes everyday, they should have their opinion about their teachers’ effectiveness. Others, on the contrary, are strongly against it. They believe that there is much more to teaching than what is shown on students’ rating forms. Students should not be expected to judge whether the materials used are up to date or how well the teacher knows about the subject. These judgments require professional knowledge, which is best left for the teachers’ colleagues.

I think stu dents’ rating of their teachers is necessary, but it should be conducted in a way that can really shed meaningful light on teachers’ performance. Instead of rating the teachers’ knowledge on the subject, students should be asked to estimate what they themselves have leaned in a course, and to report on such things as a teacher’s ability to communicate with students, his relationship with students, and his ability to arouse interest in the subject.

My V iew on Job-Hopping

Some people tend to stick to their positions all the time, as they think the longer one works in

a particular field, the more skillful one will be at it. Some have been teachers all their lives. Some devote their life energy to scientific research. Such people love their work and turn out to be specialists in their own field. They are usually high achievers.

Some are different. They are in the habit of job-hopping, for they always pursue what is new and stimulating. They never seem content with their present situation. Some like to meet more people, make more money and new acquaintances, so they hop from job to job.

As far as I am concerned, I want to be professionally strong. I am not in favor of frequent job hopping, as the saying goes "Jack of all trades, master of none". But I want to have opportunities for advancement and as many colleagues as possible to cooperate and communicate with so as to be more creative and less partial.

Dear Wang,

In today’s newspaper, I read about the recent events in your town and I am writing to extend my deepest condolences.

It broke my heart to see all those pictures of those whose homes have been destroyed in the tragic hurricane. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a little girl crying on the roof of her house asking for help. I am really worried about you and your family, and all your friends there. I am crossing my fingers for you now in hopes that you are all safe and sound.

I can only imagine how difficult this time must be for you, and I want to extend to you my unwavering support. Our government and many nongovernmental organizations are initiating various campaigns to urge people to donate money and necessary things to send to America. I donated all my allowance that I have been saving for years.

I feel extremely sorry for this tragedy, and I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Please pass my concern on to your parents.
