该小说讲述了在三一高中就读的杰里(Jerry)及其他同学受到校园恶势力组织“守夜会(The Vigils)”的压迫,在巧克力义卖事件中遭遇校园欺凌的故事。

The Goober1)was waiting for him at the school's entrance,standing tense and troubled among the other fellows waiting for school to start,like prisoners resigned to2)execution3),taking their final drags4)from cigarettes before the bells began to ring. The Goober motioned Jerry aside. Jerry followed him guiltily. Herealized that Goober wasn't the cheerful,happy-go-lucky5)kid he'd known when school first started. What had happened?He'd been so wrapped up in his own concerns that he hadn't bothered about Goob."Jeez,Jerry,what did you do it for?" Goober asked,drawing him away from the others."Do what?"But he knew what Goober meant."The chocolates.""I don't know,Goob." Jerry said. It was no use faking out6)Goober the way he had faked out that kid on the bus. "That'sthe truth―I don't know.""You're asking for trouble,Jerry. Brother Leon7)spells trouble.""Look,Goob," Jerry said,wanting to reassure his friend,wanting to wipe that look of concern from his face. "It's not the end of the world. Four hundred kids in this school are going to sell chocolates. What does it matter if I don't?""It's not that simple,Jerry. Brother Leon won't let you get away with it."The warning bell sounded. Cigarettes were flipped into the gutter or mashed into the sandfilled receptacle8)near thedoor. Last drags were inhaled lingeringly. Guys who'd been sitting in cars listening to rock on the radio switched them off and slammed the doors behind them."Nice going,kid," somebody said,hurrying by,the pat on the ass Trinity's traditional gesture of friendship. Jerry didn't see who it was."Keep it up,Jerry." This, a corner-of?Cthe-mouth whisper from Adamo who hated Leon with a vengeance9)."See how the word is spreading?" Goober hissed. "What's more important―football and your marks or thelousy10)chocolate sale?"The bell rang again. It meant two minutes left to get to your locker and then to your homeroom11). A senior by the name of Benson approached them. Seniors were trouble for freshmen. It was better to be ignored by them than to be noticed. But Benson was clearly headed in their direction. He was a nut,known for his lack of inhibitions12),his complete disregard of the rules. As he neared Jerry and Goober,he began a Jimmy Cagney13)imitation,shooting his cuffs14)and hunching15)his shoulders. "Hey,there,guy. I wouldn't ... I wouldn't be in your shoes ... I wouldn't be in your shoes for a thou,boy,a mill ..." He punched Jerry playfully onthe arm."You couldn't fit those shoes anyway,Benson," somebody yelled. And Benson danced away,Sammy Davis16)now,wide grin,feet tapping,body whirling.Walking up the stairs,Goober said,"Do me a favor,Jerry. Take the chocolate today.""I can't,Goob.""Why not?""I just can't. I'm committed now.""The goddam Vigils," Goober said.Jerry had never heard Goober swear17)before. He'd always been a mild kind of kid,rolling with the punches18),loose and carefree,running around the track while the other kids sat uptight19)during practice sessions."It's not The Vigils,Goob. They're not in it anymore. It's me."They stopped at Jerry's locker."All right," Goober said,resigned,knowing it was useless to pursue the subject any further at the moment. Jerry felt sad suddenly because Goober looked so troubled,like an old man heaped with all the sorrows of the world,his thin face drawn and haggard20),his eyes haunted,as if he hadawakened from a nightmare he couldn't forget.Jerry opened his locker. He had thumbtacked a poster tothe back wall of the locker on the first day of school. The poster showed a wide expanse of beach,a sweep of sky with a lone star glittering far away. A man walked on the beach,a small solitary figure in all that immensity. At the bottom of the poster,these words appeared―Do I dare disturb the universe?By Eliot,who wrote the Waste Land thing they were studying in English. Jerry wasn't sure of the poster's meaning. But it had moved him mysteriously. It was traditional at Trinity for everyone to decorate the interior of his locker with a poster. 主余震初步精定位和第一时间野外调查结果表明,乌什MS7 1地震的余震带总体走向NE,长约62km,主要分布在盆山交接部位。

地震产生了边坡失稳、岩崩、滚石、地裂隙等次生地质灾害,主要集中在沿构造走向微观震中两侧30km范围内。

选择种植区东部石岭村滑坡为研究对象,采用遥感、地形测量、地质勘查等工作手段,对滑坡的变形特征、形成条件、破坏机制及稳定性等特征进行详细研究,并提出防治建议。

研究结果表明:石岭村滑坡为一受基覆界面控制的小型复合式土质滑坡,在工况Ⅱ(自重+持续暴雨)下稳定系数为0.8543(不稳定),处于蠕变状态,复活的可能性较大;其主控因素为软弱的岩土体结构和适宜的地形地貌条件,诱发因素为强降雨和人类工程活动;建议对种植区自然斜坡进行工程治理,同时改变山核桃采摘方式(如采用低空挂网兜拾),恢复植被,减少水土流失。

研究成果可为种植区滑坡灾害早期识别和防治等提供重要借鉴。

1. 国际滑坡协会(ICL)(1)ICL的成立背景及组织目标国际滑坡协会(International Consortium on Landslides,ICL)于2002年1月在日本京都举行的“滑坡风险减缓和保护自然文化遗产” 国际会议期间成立(链接1)。

先后得到联合国教科文组织(UNESCO)、世界气象组织(WMO)、联合国粮农组织(FAO)、联合国国际减灾署(UNISDR)、联合国大学(UNU)、国际科学理事会(ICSU)、世界工程组织联合会(WFEO)、国际地质科学联合会(IUGS),以及日本文部科学省(MEXT)、美国地质调查局(USGS)等各国政府部门的支持。

2002年8月,ICL在日本京都府依当地法律注册为非盈利性组织(NPO,No.1300-05-005237),京都是ICL的发源地,也是其秘书处所在地。

ICL的官方语言为英语和日语。

The landslide storyRunqiu Huang and Xuanmei FanThe catastrophic Wenchuan earthquake induced an unprecedented number of geohazards. The risk of heightened landslide frequency after a quake, with potential secondary effects such as river damming and subsequent floods, needs more focused attention.O n 12 May 2008, a devastatingearthquake with a moment magnitudeof 7.9 hit China’s Sichuan province.The quake, originating in the Longmen Shanfault zone at the eastern margin of TibetanPlateau, was the country’s largest seismicevent in more than 50 years. As well as theimmediate devastation through shaking,the earthquake triggered more than 60,000destructive landslides (Fig. 1) over an areaof 35,000 km2 (ref. 1); the landslides causedabout one-third of the total number offatalities. The combination of strong andlong-lasting ground shaking, steep, ruggedtopography and a fragile and densely jointedlithology probably controlled the occurrenceof landslides during the earthquake2–4, butother factors may have also played a role.A substantial rise in debris flows was alsoapparent following the earthquake. We arguethat the risk of hazardous landslides andtheir secondary effects could remain abovepre-quake levels for another one and a halfdecades, and warrant further investigation.Earthquake magnitude and distance fromthe epicentre or ruptured fault are commonlyassumed to determine the spatial clustering of landslides during an earthquake. However, in the case of the Wenchuan earthquake, two additional factors — fault type and slip rate during the earthquake — probably also played a role. The 240-km-long Yingxiu-Beichuan fault of the Longmen Shan fault zone, on which the earthquake nucleated,is characterized by two distinct faulting mechanisms, southwest and northeast of Beichuan town, respectively. In the southwest, the fault is prevalently reverse faulting (that is, characterized by both vertical and horizontal movement), with a fault plane at an angle of about 43°. Contrarily, northeast of the town the fault plane is almost vertical and the two sides of the fault move past each other almost exclusively horizontally, in a so-called strike-slip motion5 (Fig. 2). As a result, the landslides accompanying the 2008 earthquake were clustered in a much wider corridor along the southwestern part of the fault, where crustal movement is both vertical and horizontal and the ground motion is generally stronger6. Field measurements of vertical and horizontal displacements of the crust along the Yingxiu-Beichuan fault during the Wenchuanearthquake confirm this assessment7.Furthermore, large-scale landslides —each displacing surface material from an areaof more than 50,000 m2 — were concentratedwhere fault slip rates were highest5,7, nearthe intersections and junctures of individualsegments of the fault (Fig. 2). These junctionsbetween fault segments were thought tobe locked5, with the potential to fail onlywhen sufficient stress has accumulated by acascade of rupturing in adjoining individualsegments. Once they do break, theselong-locked junctions are then thought torelease large amounts of seismic energy. Theobservation that landslides are prevalentat these junctions supports the proposedhigh energy release, and hence the theory oflocked junctions.The post-earthquake debris flowhazard has become a significant concern.A tremendous amount of loose materialfrom landslides that occurred during theearthquake is suspended on the hillslopes,ready to be eroded and transported by rain.The threshold in hourly rainfall intensityfor triggering debris flows was found tobe around 60% lower after the earthquakethan before, according to the recordin Beichuan8. The Land and ResourcesDepartment of Sichuan Province recorded2,333 occurrences of debris flow followingthe 2008 quake until 2012, not countingsmall ones in remote regions. This numberis significantly higher than the number oflandslides in a comparable time frame beforethe earthquake: there were 758 incidences ofdebris flow recorded between 2003 and 2007.How long it will take for the debris flowfrequency to return to pre-earthquakelevels depends on a large number of factors,including rainfall intensity, natural re-vegetation and self-stabilization processeson slopes, and the evolution of the regionaltopography in response to tectonics, erosionand valley incision. This was the largest landslide that occurred at the time of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, with a volume of 1.167 billion m3.©RUNQIUHUANGto return to pre-earthquake levels oflandslides can be estimated by comparing the total amount of landslide material that was moved during the earthquake (and is thus likely to be eventually mobilized by rainfall) with the recorded annual debris flow volume since 2008. In line with records of past events in the region, we assume that landslide material deposited on steep slopes with angles larger than 30°, and with a rainfall catchment area larger than 0.1 km 2, are preferentially susceptible to debris flows. Using these assumptions, we estimate that about 400 million m 3 of loose sediments were deposited during the Wenchuan earthquakes at sites prone to slope failure. These sediments are probably converted into debris flow at a rate of about 18 million m 3 per year, judging from the debris flowrecord after the 2008 quake . Based on these estimates, we anticipate that — despite large uncertainties — debris flows that directly result from sediment movement during the 2008 earthquake may remain active foranother two decades. Their frequency is likely to decline over time as a result of slope self-stabilization, which may draw out the effect even longer.Geological reconnaissance andhazard assessment immediately after the earthquake was organized efficiently and in full cooperation with the relevant local and international geoscience institutes 9. However, perhaps not enough attention was paid to the cascade of geohazards following the earthquake. For example, landslides triggered by the earthquake blocked rivers, which in turn generated risks of floods. In one representative case, the Tangjiashan landslide blocked the Jianjiang river and impounded a huge lake with an estimated volume of 300 million m 3. A potential catastrophic dam breach posed a serious threat to more than 2.5 million people in the downstream towns and Mianyang city, the second largest city in Sichuan, located 85 km downstream 10. In response to the threat, the Chinese authorities constructeda spillway to reduce the flood hazard. However, due to the unexpectedly strong erosion of the spillway, the flood peak discharge reached 6,500 m 3 s –1 at Beichuan town. This energetic flood wave, in turn, caused a cascade of breaches through four smaller landslide dams downstream, and further flooding. Fortunately, people downstream had been evacuated while the lake was being drained and so the incident did not cause fatalities. More than 800 landslides during the earthquake blocked rivers, and thus produced numerous quake lakes that posed a serious threat to people downstream 11.The longer-term effects of a similar cascade of potential hazards were not fully taken into account in the post-seismic hazard assessment and in the selection of sites for the reconstruction of destroyed buildings. For example, following intense rainstorms more than two years after the earthquake, two large-scale debris flows partially dammed the Minjiang and Mianyuan rivers. When the dams burst, the newly reconstructed towns of Yingxiu and Qingping were catastrophically flooded 12.Finally, the long-term impact of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake on sediment flux in the affected watersheds was also underestimated initially. We now realise that increases in sedimentation as a result of the shaking will pose a significant problem for rivers and their downstream reaches. Some river beds have already been elevated by more than 10 m.
