AIn fairy tales, it's usually the princess that needs protecting. At Google in Silicon Valley, the princess is the one defending the castle. Parisa Tabri is a 31-year-old with perhaps the most unique job title in engineering- “Google Security Princess”. Her job is to hac into the most popular web browser (浏览器)on the planet, trying to find weanesses in the system before the “blac hats” do. To defeat Google's attacers, Tabri must firstly thin lie them.Tabri's role has evolved dramatically in the eight years since she first started woring at Google. Bac then, the young graduate from Illinois University was one of 50 security engineers---today there are over 500.Cybercrime (网络犯罪)has come a long way in the past decade - from the Nigerian Prince Scam to credit card theft. Tabri's biggest concern now is the people who find bugs in Google's software, and sell the information to governments or criminals. To fight against this, the company has set up a Vulnerability Rewards Program, paying anywhere from $100 to $ 20, 000 for reported mistaes.班级 姓名 准考证号 考场号 座位号It's a world away from Tabri's computer-free childhood home in Chicago. The daughter of an Iranian-American doctor father, and Polish-American nurse mother, Tabri had little contact with computers until she started studying engineering at college. Gae across a line-up of Google security staff today and you'll find women lie Tabri are few and far between(稀少的)--- though in the last few years she has hired more female tech geniuses. She admits there's an obvious gender disequilibrium in Silicon Valley.Funnily enough, during training sessions Tabri first ass new colleagues to hac into not a computer, but a vending machine. Tabri's job is as much about technological now-how(专门知识)as understanding the psychology of attacers.21. What can we learn about Tabri from the passage?A. She was the first female engineer at Google.B. She must thin differently so as to defeat the attacers.C. Her job relates to not only technology but also psychology.D. Her frequent contact with computers in childhood benefits her a lot.22. Why has Google set up a Vulnerability Rewards Program?A. To protect Google against cybercrime.B. To monitor the normal operation of Google.C. To help the government locate the cybercriminals.D. To raise people's awareness of personal information safety.23. What does the underlined word “disequilibrium” in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. Imbalance.B. Preference.C. Difference.D. Discrimination.24. Which of the following could be the best title of this passage?A. What leads to cybercrimeB. The “Security Princess” who guards GoogleC. Measures taen by Google to protect its usersD. How to become an ecellent security engineerBThe English have a difficult and, generally speaing, dysfunctional (怪异的) relationship with clothes. Their main problem is that they have a desperate need for rules, and are unable to get along without them. This helps to eplain why they have an international reputation for dressing in general very badly, but with specific areas of ecellence, such as high-class men’s suits, ceremonial costumes, and innovative (革新的) street fashion. In other words, we English dress best when we are “in uniform”.You may be surprised that I am including “innovative street fashion” in the category of the uniform. Surely the parrot-haired puns (朋克摇滚乐迷) or the Victorian vampire goths are being original, not following rules? It’s true that they all loo different and eccentric (古怪的) but in fact they all loo eccentric eactly in the same way. They are wearing a uniform. The only truly eccentric dresser in this country is the Queen, who pays no attention to fashion and continues to wear what she lies, a ind of 1950s fashion, with no regard for anyone else’s opinion. Howe ver, it is true that the styles invented by young English people are much more eccentric than any other nation’s street fashion. We may not be individually eccentric, apart from the Queen, but we have a sort of collective eccentricity, and \ye appreciate originality in dress even if we do not individually have it.Another “rule” of behavior I had discovered was that it is very important for the English not to tae themselves too seriously, to be able to laugh at themselves. However, it is well nown that most teenagers tend to tae themselves a bit too seriously. The goths, in their scary blac costumes, certainly loo as if they are taing themselves seriously. But when I got into conversation with them, I discovered that they too had a sense of humor. I was once chatting to a goth in the full vampire costume—with a white face, deep purple lipstic, and blac parrot-hair. I saw he was also wearing a T-shirt with “Goth”. “Why are you wearing that?” I ased. “In case you don’t realie I’m a goth.” he answered, pretending to be serious. We both burst out laughing.25. What can we now about the English people?A. They need rules to dress well.B. They are in need of uniforms.C. They are creative in general.D. They lead the world trend.26. Who is individually eccentric in dressing?A. A high-class man.B. A parrot-haired pun.C. The Queen.D. The fashion innovator.27. Which of the following can best describe the goths?A. They dress badly.B. They dress in an amusing way.C. They are unable to laugh at the way they dress.D. They are less fashionable than the other English people.28. What may be the best title for the tet?A. How the English DressB. How the English Admire FashionC. Why the English Lie UniformsD. Why the English Are Eccentric in DressCNot long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or si months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life. Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby lies. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregivers. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings. One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he new the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby. The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly lied the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language sills in their children. Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activities and did not interfere(干预) unnecessarily. They tested the children for thining and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression. The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language sills andunderstanding what they hear. These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression. 29. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences intelligence development in babies?A. The environment.B. Their peersC. Mother’s sensitivityD. Education before birth30. What is the purpose of the eperiment in which newborn babies heard the stories?A. To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are bornB. To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babiesC. To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies’ language sillsD. To prove that babies can learn before they are born31. Which group of children did the worst in tests of language sills?A. The children of women who did not suffer from depressionB. The children of depressed but caring mothersC. The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their childrenD. Children with high communication abilities32. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Scientific findings about how intelligence develops in babiesB. Scientific findings about how babies develop before birthC. Scientific findings about how time has an effect on babies’ intelligenceD. A study shows babies are not able to learn things until they are five or si months oldDOver seven months have passed since Panamanian officials launched an epansion of the world famous Pana ma Canal. Officials agreed to the epansion so that many of the world’s largest cargo ships (货船) could easily pass through the canal. Yet the $ 5.25-billion project has problems. It says ships still continue to rub against the canal’s walls and wear out its defenses designed to protect both shipping and the waterway.A dangerous systemThe canal lins two oceans-the Atlantic and the Pacific-through a system of locs (船闸). The locs are lie steps. They raise and lower ships from one part of the waterway to another on their trip from ocean to ocean. With the old locs, which are still in use, large ships would be tied to powerful engines on both sides. These engines help to eep the ships in the center of the canal. In the new locs, the ships are tied to tugboats (拖船). One tugboat is tied to the front of the ship, with the other tied to the bac. These boats then guide the ships through the canal. At first, pilots of the cargo ships and tugboat operators would sometimes try to rub the boats against the canal walls as a way to eep the ships straight. But this caused damage to rubber padding (垫料) lining the walls. Not enough trainingEven before the epanded canal opened in June 2016, tugboat operators had epressed concern about the new system. Many ased for more training. The fears and dangers remain, although the boats are going through. The Panama Canal Authority reports that, between June 2016 and January 2017, there were only 15 incidents that resulted in damage to locs or ships. That represents about 2 percent of the 700 times ships that have sailed through the epanded canal.Pilots have argued they should be replaced with a system of floating bumpers (减震) lie those used in some European locs. Officials say they plan to continue operating with the current system of defenses, but changes could happen in the future.33. What is the difference between the new locs and the old ones?A. The old locs don’t need rubber padding as defenses.B. The new locs need tugboats tied to both sides of the ships.C. The new locs are easier for the largest ships to pass through the canal.D. The old locs need powerful engines to drag the ships through the canal.34. What is the Panama Canal Authority’s attitude towards the epanded canal?A. Cautious.B. Critical.C. Positive.D. Doubtful.35. What can we learn about the current system of defenses?A. No ships shall rub against the canal walls to protect it.B. Nothing will be done at present to improve it.C. More training will be given to pilots for it.D. A new system will replace it.第二节(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

This led Matthew Bramlet, a children's heart expert, to create exact heart models from those images. He says the 3D models show information he cannot get in any other way. The 3D printed model adds a new dimension to heart surgery, allowing surgeons to see defects that might not be readily apparent in digital images.A 3D printer uses images from a digital display to create a physical model of a human heart. Pictures from medical tests like a CAT scan or an MRI scan are sent to a 3D printer to create a heart in a plaster or a clay form. The printer then constructs the heart, thin layer by thin layer. Dr. Bramlet says the model matches the real heart in every detail.Dr. Bramlet has built model hearts for different kinds of heart operations. All of the operations were successful. In his first case, digital images showed only one tiny hole in a baby's heart. But the 3D printed model showed several defects that the baby was born with. Dr. Bramlet says those defects could not be seen easily in the images. The heart surgeon was able to change the type of surgery for the patient based on the 3D model. He added that 3D heart models saved time during heart operations.Kathy Magliato is a heart surgeon. She welcomes the new technology. She says it could help her make better decisions before she operates on the hearts of her patients.Matthew Bramlet continues to research the technology. He is working with the National Institute of Health to build a 3D library that includes heart models and images that others can use.28. What’s thr limitation of digital heart images?A. A lack of close details.B. Inability to display defects.C. Failure to show personal differences.D. Inaccuracy in the size of the child’s heart.29.What can the heart model created by 3D printing do?A.It can replace the human heart.B. It can conduct heart operations.C. It can make defects readily apparent.D.It can serve as an alternative to a CAT scan.30. What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?A. Dr. Bramlet wasted a lot of time in heart operations.A. 3D heart models have not been used in surgery at present.B. All of the operations were unsuccessful without 3D models.C.The model revealed defects previously unseen in the baby's heart.31.How does Kathy Magliato feel about the 3D printing?A. Tolerant.B. Supportive.C. Doubtful.D. Negative.DArchitect Vincent Callebaut recently introduced a plan for high-flying teams of self-sufficient aircraft that are one part of airship cities and one part hydrogen-producing floating farms. Called Hydrogenase (氧化酶), t h e aircraft are 100% emission-free and are capable of creating hydrogen without consuming land needed for crops or forests. We’ ve seen futuristic airships before, but never one that doubles asa hydrogen-producing flying farm! Designed for the South China Sea near Hainan,Callebaut’s hydrogenase airships are completely self-sufficient and contain a specialized breed of seaweed that absorbs sunlight andCO2 to produce hydrogen.According to the architecis, "The output obtained with micro-seaweed is superior to that of using farming to produce biofuel. 330 grams of seaweed produce 1, 000 liters of hydrogen per day, while for example soybeans produce roughly 1,000 liters of oil per hectare (公顷).Ahectare of seaweed could thus produce much more biofuel than a hectareof soybeans."In addition to providing a clean source of renewable energy,Hydrogenase airships offer an eco-friendly means of transportation. Although certainly slower than ordinary planes, the airships are nearly silent and require a very little basic structure to take off and land. The architects also suggest that the airships could provide disaster relief to remote areas, and be used as flying hospitals and aid centers. Each hydrogenase airship is covered with flexible photovoltaic cells(光电池).The interior features room for housing, offices, scientific laboratories, and entertainment, and a series of bioremediating (生物治理)vegetable gardens provide a source of food while recycling waste. Hydrogenase is certainly for futuristic concept, but il does use a setof technologies being developed today — and perhaps one day we willsee fantastic ideas like this take flight.32.What do we know about Vincent Callebaut?A.He is working on a floating farm.B.He compares many different airships.C.He has developed a self-sufficient aircraft.D.He has come up with a plan for new aircraft.33.Why do the airships contain seaweed?A.To produce oxygen.B. To create hydrogen.C. To absorb hydrogen.D. To absorb harmful gases.34.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?A.Farms with seaweed produce more food.B.Farms with seaweed are more efficient at producing biofuel.C.Soybeans can’t be planted on the airships.D.Farms with seaweed will surely replace traditional farmlands.35.What does the text mainly talk about?A.The advantages of the airships.B.The disadvantages of the airships.C.The airships renewable energy source.D.When and where the airships can be used.第二节(共5小题;每小题3分.满分15分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选項。

These vessels (容器) were made to carry sacrificial offerings, to use in burial or to honor noble families in public ceremonies. When they were found by emperors centuries later, these spiritually significant objects were seen as signs of heavenly messages about a ruler or a dynasty and became prized items in royal collections. This exhibition —the first to explore these ancient objects throughout Chinese history — presents a rare opportunity to experience a large number of these works together in the United States.Unlike Greek and Roman bronze sculptures of human and animal forms, most objects from Bronze Age China (about 2000 - 221 BC) were vessels for ceremonial use. Beginning with the Song dynasty (960 - 1279), emperors unearthed these symbolic works and began collecting them, considering them to be evidence of their own authority as rulers. In addition to impressive collections, the royal fascination with bronzes led to the creation of numerous reproductions and the comprehensive cataloguing of palace holdings. These catalogues are works of art themselves, featuring beautiful drawings and detailed descriptions of each object. From the 12th century onward, scholars and artists also engaged in collecting and understanding ancient bronzes. Unlike emperors, scholars regarded bronzes as material evidence of their efforts to recover and reconstruct the past, and they occasionally exchanged them as tokens (象征) of friendship. Today ancient bronzes still occupy a primary position in Chinese culture — as historical objects and as signifiers of an important cultural heritage that inspires new generations, as seen in the works of contemporary artists on view in this presentation.Mirroring China’s Past brings to gether approximately 180 works from the An Institute of Chicago’s strong holdings and from the Palace Museum in Beijing, the Shanghai Museum, and important museums and private collections in the United States. By providing viewers with a new understanding of ancient bronzes and their significance through time, the exhibition demonstrates China’s fascinating history and its developing present.28. In what way are Chinese bronzes different from Greek and Roman ones?A. They fascinated the royal family.B. They took animal or human forms.C. They served ceremonial purposes.D. They were important cultural heritage.29. What does the author think of catalogues of bronzes?A. Unreal.B. Creative.C. Artistic.D. Necessary.30. What does the underlined word “holdings” in the last paragraph refer to?A. Viewers.B. Collections.C. Museums.D.Art dealers.DI was in the middle of coding a web page when my wife emailed me these questions: Ever wonder what it would be like to have the face, the brains, the personality and the body? What it would be like to have everyone stop when you walk in a room? What it would he like to be able to get anything or anyone you want? I stopped for a moment and thought about it because my wife wouldn’t email me this unless something had driven her to do so. I emailed her back with what I thought was a pretty good answer. Here is what I wrote her back.Yes, I had thought many times about what it would be like to be one of the beautiful peopic. To be able to take your breath away when I walked into a room, or to be the life of the party and have everyone fawning (奉承) over me as I wore only the finest clothes and sported the perfect body? But then I always came back to the realization that a lifestyle like that is so fragile. As you get older, your body changes; as you get older, the money changes. Your body never looks the same, the clothes become more and more expensive to maintain. And once you have crossed the line, suddenly you are out. The next fresh face comes in and you are quickly forgotten. All through growing up I was never an attractive person. I was overweight and picked on. But that didn’t stop me from being a nice person — a good, clean, funny and helpful person. I was the person who you came to when you needed a friend after a breakup. I was the one you came to when you needed a joke to brighten up your day. And in the long run,I will be the one you remember, not the new face, or the fresh style. In closing, I would like to say that we, as a people, have developed into looking (or things that are bigger and better instead of what will last. I don’t know about you, but I will remember the friend who helped me when I was down, more than the hot girl I just saw walking down the street.I wish I could teach the world some more jokes.32. How did the author react to his wife’s questions?A. He took them seriously.B. He went on coding the pageC. He replied to them right away.D. He wondered why she had done so.33. The bus is the most common form of urban transportation in Canada. To use public transportation, you must purchase a ticet or a transit pass. Transit passes allow you unlimited use of public transportation for a specific period (one month or more). They are usually cheaper than buying many ticets if you plan to use public transportation often. Transportation for people with disabilities Public transportation often has features to assist people with disabilities. In many cities and towns, there are also transportation services available specifically for people with limited mobility, such as specially equipped buses. You can find out about these services in the same way you would learn more about other public transportation options. D. By providing free rides in towns and cities. 23. What is considered impolite on public transportation? A. Lowering your speaing voice. B. Placing bacpacs at your feet. C. Staying close to other passengers. D. Having your proof of payment at hand. B Today we tal about a time when half the world is waing from the dar, cold winter months. Spring! We often describe “spring” as a time of rebirth, renewal and awaening. Many trees are blossoming and early flowers are pushing through the earth. Things are coming to life! But the word “spring” is not just a season. It is also a verb that means something going on or coming out quicly. When you put “spring” and “life” together, you will get “spring to life”. This epression means something suddenly becomes very active or perhaps seems more alive! You may “spring to life” after hearing that a distant friend will be visiting you. Or maybe your favorite soccer team finally “sprang to life” in the second half, played well and won the match. Now, besides being a season and a verb the noun “spring” refers to a metal coil (线圈) that is wound tightly. When the coil unwinds, it often jumps. So, we often say a person “has a spring in his step” if he is lively and active. He might even appear to jump, or bounce a little when he wals. There is another way we use “spring” as a description. In the case of a “spring chicen”, “spring” means young. However, “spring chicen” is also an informal, humorous way to refer to someone who isn’t young at all. So, we use this epression in the negative form, as in “no spring chicen”. For eample, let’s say you now an 85-year-old man who decides to run a marathon, even though he has never eercised before. You could say, “That’s amaing! After all, he’s no spring chicen.” But be careful when using this epression. It could be a little disrespectful. Let’s say your boss shows you a picture of his wife, and you say, “Wow, she’s no spring chicen.” That response would be disrespectful and a bad career move. 24. What does “spring” mean in the epression “spring to life”? A. The season after winter. B. Being young and healthy. C. A tightly wound metal coil. D. To occur or appear quicly. 25. What is the passage mainly about? A、The origin of the word “spring” B. The meaning of the season “spring”. C. Some epressions with the word “spring”. D. Some characteristics of the season “spring”. 26. How does someone feel when he “has a spring in his step”? A. Angry B. Surprised C. Happy D. Frightened 27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Being young is a great advantage in career development. B. Women may feel offended when described as “no spring chicen”. C. Using “spring-related” epressions in conversations seems impolite. D. Epressions with the word “spring” are always disrespectful to others. C More than 90 years has passed since Hollywood’s official film organiation first proposed plans to build its own museum. Those plans are finally becoming a reality, with the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures
