Wuhan is the capital of Hubei province, People's Republic of China, which is one of the 15 deputyprovincial cities in China, one of the 7 major national central cities, and is the most populous city in central China. It lies at the east of Jianghan Plain, and the intersection of the middle reaches of the Yangtze and Han River. Arising out of the conglomeration of three boroughs, Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang, known

as“three towns of wuhanWuhan”.The easternmost point of wuhan is located in Xugu town of Xinzhou district,the westernmost is located in zhuru street ofCaidian district, the southernmost is located in Husistreet of Jiangxia district, the northernmost is located in Caidian street of Huangbei district, like a colorful butterfly from west to east. InChinese economic geography circles, Wuhan is a superb central location, known as the "heart" of Chinese economic geography.

Wuhan plays a key role in domestic transportation, known as "the nine provinces' leading thoroughfare".Wuhan is an important inland port and the center of the middle reaches of Yangtze River’s navigation. It is also the biggest inland port of sailing and arrival to the littoral. Meanwhile, Wuhan is one of the four railway terminals of China and has Wu Han, Wu Chang, Han Kou passenger stations. As the first 4F airport and through to major cities in China and twenty international cities, Tianhe International Airport provide people with much convenient. Apart from the railway service, Tianhe International Airport, Wu Han has several national road and highway. Otherwise, with the open of first subway line through Yangtze River in December 12th, 2012, Wu Han strides to the era of subway.

Wuhan has a 3500-year-long history, which is one of the most ancient and civilized metropolitan cities in China.In the history, Wuhan was a place full of wars among Wei, Shu and Wu,there were many wars and important events in Wuhan, it is magnificent in early modern and modern times. There were mainly three important events in the history of Wuhan.

Opening Hankou as a Trading Port

During the Second Opium War, the Government of Qing Dynasty was defeated by the western powers and signed the Treaties of Tianjin and the Convention of Peking, which stipulated eleven cities or regions as trading ports. In December 1858, James Bruce, Earl of Elgin, High Commissioner to China, led four warships up the Yangtze River in Wuhan to collect the information needed for opening the trading port in Wuhan. And in spring of 1861, Counselor Harry Parkes and Admiral Herbert were sent to Wuhan to open a trading port. On the basis of the Convention of Peking, Harry Parkes concluded the Hankou Lend-Lease Treaty with Guan Wen,

thegovernor-general of Hunan and Hubei. It brought an area of 30.53 square kilometers along the Yangtze River to become a British Concession and permitted Britain to set up their consulate in the British Concession. Thus, Hankou became an open trading port.
