国学这个词古已有之，先秦典籍《周礼·春官·乐师》中有这样一段话：“掌国学之政，以教国子小舞。
”《礼记》中也有“国有学”的词句。

在这本书里，“国粹学”和“国故学”是通用的。
20世纪初期以来，国学经历了非常曲折的发展道路，然而终不至于消失，并且发展到今天又重新“热”了起来，这一方面说明我国传统文化、学术确实有着异常顽强的生命力，是当代文化、学术建构和发展中不可或缺的重要资源；另一方面，近现代以来人们屡屡提到国学，这也说明，中国文化、学术在现代发展中所遇到的一系列价值选择方面的难题并没有得到很好的解决。
事实已经证明，在每一个历史时期，如果能广泛吸收外来文化，实际上是激活中国固有文化的一个重要渠道，这我们可以从汉代尤其是唐代大开放中得到证明。
然而只有立足于民族的优秀文化本位，吸收外来文化，我们的文化才能既不失本民族的文化特色，又能保持一种强劲的生命力。
而在谈到中国传统文化的时候，肯定绕不开国学这么一个话题。
所以从广义上来讲，国学可以说是中华文化优秀传统的主要承载者和传播途径；而从狭义上来讲，国学所从事的正是关于中华文化传统的整理、研究工作，其甄别、诠释、评价之功，无不有利于我们对传统文化优秀成分的继承与弘扬。
