English: Traditional Chinese opera, also known as "xi qu," is an important part of China's cultural heritage. It has a history of thousands of years and encompasses various regional styles such as Peking opera, Cantonese opera, and Kunqu opera. With its distinctive singing, acting, and acrobatic elements, Chinese opera is a unique art form that reflects the rich history and traditions of Chinese society. In recent years, there has been a growing concern about the decline of traditional Chinese opera, especially among the younger generation. To address this issue, efforts have been made to bring Chinese opera into schools and campuses, aiming to cultivate an appreciation for this traditional art form among young students. By incorporating Chinese opera into the school curriculum, students can not only gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and history but also develop a sense of pride and connection to their cultural roots.

1Bringing the Beauty of Chinese Opera to Our SchoolMy name is Xiaoming and I am a 5th grader at Peixin Elementary School in Shanghai. I love my school and the teachers who work so hard to give us a great education. But there is one thing I think could make our school even better - bringing the wonder of traditional Chinese opera right into our classrooms!Last year, my grandparents took me to see a performance of the famous Peking Opera. At first, I didn't know what to expect. The singing sounded so different from the pop songs I usually listen to. The movements and costumes looked strange and unfamiliar. But as the show went on, I became completely captivated by the vibrant colors, energetic choreography, and powerful vocal performances. The story we saw that night was about a heroic warrior battling evil forces to defend his village. Through the magical combination of singing, choreographed fighting, and elaboratemakeup and costumes, the performers brought this ancient tale to vivid life before my eyes. I was transported to another time and place, witnessing incredible feats of strength, drama, and artistry. When the performance ended, I couldn't stop thinking about all the skill and dedication required to master this traditional art form.Chinese opera has such a long, rich history dating back hundreds of years. Yet so few young people today have had the chance to experience its unique splendor. The different regional opera styles like Kunqu, Cantonese Opera, and Sichuan Opera represent the cultural treasures of our nation's diverse ethnic groups. Watching an opera performance connects us to the past while showing how these timeless stories and artistic traditions continue to flourish and evolve. That's why I think it's so important for my school to start introducing opera culture to students while we're young. By learning about opera's origins, observing excerpts from classic works, and even trying our hand at some of the basic vocal and movement techniques, we can develop a greater appreciation for this profound piece of China's heritage. Opera education perfectly aligns with our school's mission to instill respect for our cultural roots.Just imagine how amazing it would be to have real opera professionals visit our classrooms for workshops and talks! The performers could teach us about their intense training regimens, explain the symbolic meanings behind the intricate makeup designs, and guide us as we learn a few opera singing warm-ups. We could analyze the poetic lyrics while discussing the philosophical ideas conveyed through the plotlines. For students interested in theater or music, opera could open up exciting new creative outlets to explore.Putting on an opera performance requires the collaboration of so many Different artistic roles - not just the singers/dancers on stage, but also the musicians, directors, choreographers, makeup artists, costume designers, and more. Learning about these roles reinforces the importance of diverse talents and teamwork. Opera encourages students to develop focus, discipline, and an appreciation for cultural traditions. These are all invaluable lessons to learn through the arts.Another reason opera education should come to our school is because it celebrates the distinguished heritage of the Chinese people. In an age of globalization with so many outside cultural influences, it's vital that China's youth has a strong sense of cultural identity rooted in our nation's refined artisticachievements of the past. Opera's elaborate storytelling reminds us of the long, imaginative history of literature and drama in China. The dazzling visuals evoke the aesthetic principles of balance, flow, and symbolic representation found in ancient Chinese aesthetics. No matter how modern our society becomes, these spirited operas remain radiant emblems of the Chinese civilization's artistic pinnacles. If we can experience this magnificence firsthand as students, I know it will instill an immense sense of cultural confidence and pride within each of us. When I'm older, I want to be able to take my own children to see operas and pass down this honorable legacy. By making opera a vibrant presence in schools today, we ensure its survival and relevance for generations to come.Accordingly, I encourage my teachers and principal to seriously consider incorporating opera into our curriculum and hosting more opera activities at our school. Perhaps we could start an after-school opera club where students can practice singing arias and stage short excerpts. We could hold an annual Chinese Opera Day festival with food vendors, artisan handicraft booths, and professional opera troupe performances. Whenever prominent opera companies are touring in our city, we shouldarrange student field trips so we can witness these masterworks live on stage.Opera may at first seem too obscure or inaccessible for kids like us. But with hands-on participation and passionate instructors, I'm confident learning about this treasured art form will be an incredibly enriching experience. My dream is that one day, our school will become renowned for its opera education programs that instill a profound appreciation for classical Chinese culture in every student. We have the chance to keep this vital art alive while developing important life skills and an anchor of cultural identity that will forever nourish our minds and souls.Who's with me? Let's bring the grandeur of Chinese opera to our school so its flame can burn brighter for the next generation!篇2Bringing Opera to Our SchoolI'm really excited because our school is doing something super cool this year - we're learning all about traditional Chinese opera! Opera might sound kind of boring to some kids, but trust me, it's actually really awesome once you get into it.First of all, the costumes and makeup are just mind-blowing. The performers wear these elaborate silk robes with embroidered dragons and phoenixes, and their faces are painted with bright colors and exaggerated features. It makes them look almost like magical creatures instead of regular people. The makeup is called Lian Pu, and each color and design has a special meaning that helps tell the story.Speaking of stories, that's another amazing part of opera - the dramas and tales they act out on stage. A lot of them are taken from famous classics like Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Journey to the West. There's always tons of action with sword fights, battles, and incredible acrobatics. But there are also love stories, historical dramas, and tales of good triumphing over evil. No matter what the story is about, it's brought to life through singing, dancing, martial arts moves, and even circus-like stunts! The singing itself is really unique too. Instead of just regular singing voices, opera performers use special vocal techniques that almost sound like they're "throwing" their voices in different ways. There are lots of different styles like dan (female roles), sheng (male roles), jing (painted faces for good/evil characters) and chou (comedic roles). My favorite is kun opera whichoriginated here in our province of Jiangsu. The melodies and rhythms have such a beautiful flowing quality. Our school has been so fortunate to have a trained opera troupe come teach us all about this incredible art form. We started by learning some basic movements and gestures that opera performers use to act out different characters and emotions. Things like how to flourish a long sleeve to express grief, or postures for depicting bravery or cowardice. Even little moves like tilting your head a certain way can convey a whole story without words. After some movement classes, we dove into learning singing styles and vocal techniques. Unlike Western opera where you have to have an amazing singing voice from birth, Chinese opera relies more on learning special skills like breath control, pitch sliding, and producing different vibrations. We broke into groups based on the main role types, and I'm part of the chou (comedic role) group because I told them I like goofing around! Our teacher has us doing fun vocal exercises like sustaining long notes or repeating tongue-twisters to train our voices. The best part so far has definitely been studying actual opera excerpts and trying to act them out. We've learned short scenes from classics like The Butterfly Lovers and The PeonyPavilion. First we analyze the story, discuss the motivations of each character, practice the lyrics and singing sections, then put it all together with movements and costumes. It's awesome to see the different character roles come to life through each person's unique vocals and moves.Just a couple weeks ago, our school had its first open opera performance on the auditorium stage. All the elementary classes prepared short operas scenes to present for our families. Our class did a comedic scene about a pair of bumbling watermelon vendors trying to outwit each other. We got to wear silly costumes with exaggerated bellies and face paint, then sang in our chou vocal styles while doing over-the-top slapstick moves and tumbling. The audience was cracking up the whole time!Seeing the show made me appreciate how much work and skill goes into opera. The singing and movements alone are so difficult, but then you also have to act out your role with just the right emotions and facial expressions. Not to mention remembering all your lyrics, choreography, backstories, costumes, props, and more. Putting on an opera show is like a miracle when you think about everything involved.I feel really lucky that my school is giving me this chance to learn about such an ancient and rich art form. Opera has beenaround for hundreds of years, but it feels just as vibrant and alive as any modern performance. Getting to study it up-close has opened my eyes to what an incredible cultural treasure it is.More than just being fun and entertaining, opera helps pass down classic stories, songs, dances and values to future generations. I've gained such respect for the discipline and artistry it takes to master these traditional skills. It has also connected me more to my cultural roots in a way that really resonates instead of just reading about it in books.I really hope my school keeps making opera education a priority for years to come. And I hope other schools will follow our example to give kids a hands-on experience with this living work of performance art. If more young people have a chance to dive into opera in a fun, interactive way, I'm willing to bet a new generation will fall in love with it just like I have. Instead of being a dying art, it can keep evolving and thriving as a vital piece of Chinese cultural heritage. As for me, studying opera this year has honestly beenlife-changing. I've discovered a whole new passion and appreciation for the arts. Who knows, you might even see me on stage one day wearing crazy makeup and performingmind-bending vocal acrobatics! But at the very least, the lessonsof discipline, storytelling and cultural legacy that I've learned will stick with me forever. Opera isn't just a show, it's a priceless treasure to be cherished and shared with the world.篇3Bringing Chinese Opera to Our SchoolHave you ever seen a Chinese opera performance? It's like a play, but with singing, dancing, acrobatics, and beautiful costumes and makeup. The stories are usually based on folktales or historical events from ancient China. My class recently had the chance to learn about this traditional art form when a troupe of opera performers visited our school. It was such a cool experience! At first, I didn't know what to expect. Opera seems kind of boring for kids, right? All I knew was that it involved singing and costumes. But as soon as the performers came out on stage, I was hooked. Their costumes were incredibly colorful and elaborate, with embroidered silk robes, shiny headpieces, and heavy makeup. The women looked like beautiful princesses or fairies. The opera we watched told the story of the Monkey King, a mischievous monkey deity who gets into all sorts of trouble.Right away, the singing and movement of the performers drew me in. The way they used their voices, changing pitch and tone, was really expressive. And rather than just walking around, their movements were stylized, sort of like a dance. My favorite part was when the Monkey King used his magic staff to fight the evil demons. The performer playing the Monkey King was so acrobatic, leaping and flipping all over the stage. He made fight scenes look like an incredible martial arts performance. At other times, the Monkey King was totally goofy, making funny faces and noises that had everyone laughing. I couldn't believe one performer could do so many amazing things! After the show, the opera troupe stayed to teach us some of the skills involved in their performances. We learned basic movements and gestures that actors use to show different characters and emotions. We even got to try on some of the costumes and makeup. I felt like a real Monkey King when I had the headpiece and long robe on! Wearing the heavy costumes made me appreciate how talented the performers are to move so gracefully while wearing all of that. The opera performers also taught us about the long history and traditions behind their art form. Opera has been part ofChinese culture for hundreds of years. The stories, music, dancing, and acrobatics we saw evolved over centuries. There are actually many different regional styles of opera across China. The one we saw originated in the area around Beijing and is called jingju or Peking opera.Seeing the opera performance made me feel connected to my Chinese heritage in a new way. Even though the stories are ancient, I could understand the humor, action, and drama through the performers' amazing skills. Opera is a way for Chinese culture to be passed down through generations. I have so much respect now for the opera singers, dancers and acrobats who keep this tradition alive through their hard work and talent.I think it's really important for kids like me to learn about traditional arts like opera. So much of what we experience these days comes from modern movies, TV shows, video games, and social media. While I love that stuff too, there's something special about an art form that has been practiced and preserved for centuries. Opera reminds us of where we came from and connects us to our ancestors' way of life.My favorite class is art, and I've always loved painting, drawing, and crafting. But after seeing the opera performance, I feel inspired to explore more traditional Chinese arts and craftstoo. Maybe I'll try mask painting, papercutting, calligraphy, or ceramics. Who knows, I might even take opera lessons and continue this ancient storytelling tradition when I'm older!I'm so grateful my school brought the opera performers in for us to experience. It opened my eyes to a whole world of traditional Chinese culture that I hadn't known much about before. My parents were really excited that I was interested in opera too. They grew up watching and listening to it, but worried it might seem too old-fashioned for kids these days. Now my family is trying to find more opportunities for us to attend performances or learn about other aspects of traditional Chinese arts and culture. We listened to some recorded Peking opera excerpts over the weekend and my parents explained the different singing styles and role types to me. I can't wait to see another full opera drama soon.I think more schools should invite opera troupes, artisans, musicians and other cultural ambassadors to share their skills and knowledge with students. It's one thing to read about traditions in a book, but experiencing them first-hand is so much more powerful and meaningful. By incorporating cultural activities and education into our regular learning, we can trulyappreciate the richness of Chinese heritage. That way, these age-old customs won't be forgotten by new generations.Traditions like opera connect the present to the past in a vivid, engaging way. They use stories, music, art and performance to bring history to life. Keeping traditions going helps preserve our unique cultural identity in an increasingly global, modern world. As the youth of today, it's important for us to understand and respect where we came from. That will allow us to move forward while still honoring our roots. So let's embrace amazing cultural traditions like Chinese opera! They make the ancient world feel accessible and real. And they remind us of the incredible creativity, skills, and community values that our ancestors passed down over thousands of years. I feel really lucky to have had this inside look at such a rich artistic tradition. I can't wait to dive deeper into my own cultural heritage.。
