We skim over articles, e-mails and tweets to try to grasp key words and the essential meaning of a certain text. Bombarded with information from our electronic devices, it would be impossible to cope if we read word by word, line by line. But a new trend calls on people to unplug and enjoy reading slowly, listing benefits beyond intellectual stimulation. A recent story from The Wall Street Journal reported on a book club in Wellington, New Zealand, where members meet in a cafe and turn off their smartphones. They sink into cozy chairs and read in silence for an hour. Unlike traditional book clubs, the point of the Slow Reading Club isn’t exchanging ideas about a certain book, but to get away from electronic devices and read in a quiet, relaxed environment. According to the Journal, the Wellington book club is just one example of a movement initiated by book lovers who miss the old-fashioned way of reading before the Internet and smartphones. Slow readers, such as The Atlantic’s Maura Kelly, say a regular reading habit sharpens the mind, improves concentration, reduces stress levels and deepens the ability to empathize. Some of these benefits have been backed up by science. For example, a study of 300 elderly people published by the journal Neurology last year showed that regular engagement in intellectual activities like reading slowed the rate of memory loss later in life. Another study published last year in Science showed that reading novels helps people understand others’ mental states and beliefs, a crucial skill in building relationships. Yet technology has made us less attentive readers. Screens have changed our reading patterns from the linear, left-to-right sequence to a wild skimming and skipping pattern as we hunt for important words and information. Reading text punctuated with links leads to weaker comprehension than reading plain text. The Internet may have made us stupider, says Patrick Kingsley from The Guardian. Because of the Internet, he says, we have become very good at collecting a wide range of factual tidbits(趣闻), but we are also gradually forgetting how to sit back, contemplate, and relate all these facts to each other. Slow reading means a return to an uninterrupted, linear pattern, in a quiet environment free of distractions. Aim for 30 minutes a day, advises Kelly from The Atlantic. “You can squeeze in that half hour pretty easily if only during your free moments—whenever you find yourself automatically firing up your laptop to check your favorite site, or scanning Twitter for something to pass the time—you pick up a meaningful work of literature,” Kelly said. “Reach for your e-reader, if you like. Kindles make books like War and Peace less heavy, not less substantive, and also ensure you’ll never lose your place.” 31. According to the passage, which reading habit is recommended by the author? A. Exchanging ideas while reading. B. Reading in a relaxed environment. C. Skimming for key words of articles. D. Reading text punctuated with links. 32. Which of the following is TRUE? A. Speed reading on the Internet involves left-to-right reading sequence. B. While reading slowly, we must turn off our electronic devices. C. Kindle is a good choice to help develop the habit of slow reading. D. Interrupted reading pattern is good for improving concentration. 33. What does the underlined word “contemplate” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. think about something carefully B. look though something C. draw a conclusion quickly D. distract one’s attention 34. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Slow reading is necessary and beneficial. B. It’s time to change our reading pattern. C. Slow reading and fast reading are different. D. Slow readers need to discuss while reading. B Across the highway from the Nairobi’s Muthaiga Country Club is Mathare, a slum(贫民窟) that stretches as far as the eye can see. Although Mathare has virtually no services like good streets, it has a sizeable and growing number of classrooms, among them just 4 public schools and as many as 120 private schools. The parents who send their children to these schools in their millions welcome this. But governments, teachers’ unions and non-governmental organizations(NGOs) tend to take the view that private education should be discouraged or heavily regulated. That must change. Education in most of the developing world is shocking. Half of children in South Asia and a third of those in Africa who complete four years of schooling cannot read

Mr. Bennet replied that he had not."But it is," returned she, "for Mrs. Long has just been here, and she told me all about it."Mr. Bennet made no answer."Do you not want to know who has taken it?" cried his wife impatiently."You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it."This was invitation enough."Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs. Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England; that hecamedown on Monday in a chaise to see the place, and was so much delighted with it, that he agreed with Mr. Morris immediately; that he is to take possession before Michaelmas, and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week.""What is his name?""Bingley.""Is he married or single?""Oh! Single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls! ""How so? How can it affect them?""My dear Mr. Bennet," replied his wife, "how can you be so tiresome! You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them.""Is that his design in settling here?""Design! Nonsense, how can you talk so! But it is very likely that he may fall in love with one of them, and therefore you must visit him as soon as he comes.""I see no occasion for that. You and the girls may go, or you may send them by themselves, which perhaps will be still better, for as you are as handsome as any of them, Mr. Bingley may like you the best of the party."1. At the end of the passage, Mr. Bennet sounded ______ toward his wiest Placeholder!fe's proposal.A. disgusted and irritatedB. ironic and sharpC. incredible and contentD. ambiguous and sorrowfulA New DayThe sun has begun to set and I hang up the smile I抳e worn all day, though I will make sure it is the first thing I put back on in the morning just in case it is "that day." I want her to see me at my very best.I do the normal routine, eat dinner, clean the house, write梩heusual stuff. And then I lay down hoping to fall asleep quickly so my new day will hurry up and arrive. A new day with a brand new sun.But as I lay there and wait for the world to turn half way around, I think about her. And sometimes I smile, and sometimes that smile will turn into a snicker, and then often that snicker will turn into a burst of laughter. And then there are times I get that lump in my throat and that tight feeling in my chest, and sometimes that feeling overwhelms me and begins to turn into a tear, and often that tear multiplies itself and I can no longer fight the feeling and I lose the battle. Then somehow through either the joy or the sadness I drift and find myself asleep. Then the dreams begin and keep me company until my new day arrives. When I awake it抯with such excitement because I tell myself this could be the day that every other day has led up to and the first day of the rest of my life. I quickly don my smile because I do so want her to see me at my very best. Then I look out the window because, even though I know it抯dawn, I still have to confirm I抳e been given another chance to find her.And there it is卼he sun, even when it抯cloudy; somehow I still see it. And it smiles at me and I say, "Thank you," and I smile back. Then I ask myself, "Is this the day?" And the excitement rushes over me again. And then I ask myself, "Where抯it going to be?"Maybe it抣l be at the water fountain, and, unexpectedly, there I抣l find her, and much more than my thirst will be quenched. Maybe it抣l be at the grocery store and there she抣l appear as I抦picking out fruit, and she抣l show me the difference between fresh and spoiled. Then, from that moment, nothing that I eat will ever taste the same because she抣l bring out the simplest beauties in everything I see, taste, smell, hear, or touch.Or maybe today will be the day when my angel brings an item up to the cash register without its price tag. And as I wait behind this angel with all the frustrated people who are in such a hurry with their busy lives, I will find myself with such blessed extra time. Just enough time to start a conversation with this beautiful vision standing in front of me that I might not otherwise have noticed, but, because of a "price check on register 5," I was able to find her.Thank you for the sun, which began my new day. Thank you for granting me the faith when I arose this morning that I would find her in this new day. But most of all, thank you for me not having to ever wait on another sunrise because whenever I want to see it, I will look at her and there it shall always be, in her eyes; she will forever hold it for me.She is my sunrise, my dawn, my new day.(599 words)Vacabulary:(查字典并写出以下单词和词组在文中的意义)1. routine _____________________________2. a brand new sun ______________________3. snicker _____________________________4. overwhelm __________________________5. drift _______________________________6. don ___________________________________7. the water fountain _______________________8. quench ________________________________9. vision _________________________________Translation: (将以下句子翻译成中文)1.
