Do you believe that every cloud has a silver lining and that generally things turn out for the best? Do you believe that if something is meant to be, it will be? If you reply “yes” to all of these questions, then you are an optimist. You probably are enthusiastic, cheerful and outgoing. You may well be successful at work and in love. But you may be misguided because things don’t turn out for the best. You may believe that when one door closes another one opens (for example, you may fail to obtain a new job, another chance will come around soo n), Wrong. When one door closes, another door slams in your face. That's bitter reality. Now a book has been published which confirms what we pessimists (悲观者)have suspected all along. It's called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for things by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully considereverything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, “What’s interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successful people, so their low opinion of the situation’s outcom es is not realistic. They use it to motivate themselves to perform better. ”So far, so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on a date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have a back-up plan. There are many sayings in English urging caution. For example, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” and “ Don’t count your chickens until they hatch. “ To have a confident and optimistic approach to life’s problems is good. But listen to what Woody Alien, the American comedian says, ”Confidence is what you have before yo u understand the problem.”There are pros and cons to being an optimist and a pessimist. Don’t feel bad if you see the glass half empty. You are a realist. But lighten up and hook up with someone who sees the same glass half full.68. What is the passage mainly about?A. A book that has recently been published.B. The dangers of being too optimistic.C. The benefits of defensive pessimism.D. How to become successful in life.69. The underlined sentence “This is not rocket science” in paragraph 4 means _________.A. the cos t is not so highB. there is no real proofC. it’s not a dangerous thing to doD. it is quite simple to understand70. Which of the following English expressions would a defensive pessimist believe?A. “Every cloud has a silver lining.”B. “The glass is half full not half empty.”C. “Whatever will be, will be.”D. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”参考答案68-71 CDBD****************************************************结束In 1986,when Carlo Petrini first coined the term “Slow Food,” he organized locally in his native Italy to preserve the food and wine culture and protest fast food.Today, slow food has spread to 132 countries with over 85, 000 members, addressing worldwide issues like farmer equity and environmental stewardship—the actions people take to respect the rights of all living things and all environments, to contribute to healthy and livable communities.Characterized by Slow Food International as “good, clean, and fair food,” slow food must enrich the eaters' life, have no negative impact on human or environmental health, and compensate fairly for food producers' work. The average American meal travels about 1,500 miles to its final destination, with producing of food traveling by plane from overseas and other items shipped across the country. However, cost for food travel and heavy processing are not the only problems in the food industry that the environment faces. Industrial agriculture also has unsustainable practices like inefficient water use and decreased biodiversity. Our ideas in feeding ourselves are exceptional, but at various points our technologies come into conflict with nature's ways of doing things. A great many of the health and environmental problems created by our food system owe to our attempts to oversimplify natures complexities, at both the growing and the eating ends of our food chain.“Slowing” food, by purchasing locally and sustainabl y, allows consumers to reduce the impact of “food miles” and develop a closer relationship with their food producers.“ We need to change our food system,” said David Prior, organizerof Slow Food Nation EatIn. “Our current food system is sick and we need to support farmers and agriculture to ensure that everyone has the right to nutritious food.”72. The main idea of the passage can be summarized as________.A. why slow food is so importantB. the food and wine culture is rich in ItalyC. what you're eating always travels a long wayD. slow food makes the current food system sick73. Slow food's characteristic doesn't lie in________.A. improving the quality of eaters' lifeB. providing a fair pay for food workersC. being friendly to human and environmental healthD. developing a loose relationship with food producers75. 马鞍山市2014高考英语阅读理解、动词短语精讲讲练(15)及答案(·合肥市第三次质量检测)Today our life and work rarely feel light or pleasant. Instead, the whole experience of being alive begins to melt into huge responsibility. It becomes the standard greeting everywhere: I am so busy.We say this to one another with no small degree of pride. The busier we are, the more important we seem to ourselves and, we imagine, to others. To be unavailable to our friends and family, to be unable to find time for the sunset, to speed through our responsibilities without time for a single mindful breath — this has become the model of a successful life.Because we do not rest, we lose our way. We lose the nourishment(营养) that gives us help. We miss the quiet that gives us wisdom. Poisoned by the belief that good things come only through tireless effort, we never truly rest. This is not the world we dreamed of when we were young. How did we get so terribly rushed in a world filled with work and responsibility, yet somehow lack of joy and delight? We have forgotten the Sabbath (安息日). Sabbath is the time to enjoy and celebrate what is beautiful and good — time to light candles, sing songs, tell stories, bless our children and loved ones, give thanks, share meals, nap and walk. It is time to be nourished and refreshed as we let our work, our chores and our important projects lie fallow, trusting that there are larger forces at work taking care of the world when we are at rest.Sabbath is more than the absence of work. Many of us, in our desperate drive to be successful and care for our many responsibilities, feel terribly guilty when we take time to rest. But the Sabbath has proven its wisdom over the ages. Many of us still recall when, not long ago, shops and offices were closed on Sundays. Those quiet Sunday afternoons remained in our cultural memory.语篇解读:在如今这个社会中,人们一直以能成为成功人士而自豪,而成功人士的标准之一就是“忙”。

辽宁马鞍山市2014高考英语阅读理解、动词短语精讲讲练(19)及答案(·皖南八校第三次联考)The “Neighborhood Watch” scheme all started a few years ago in the quiet village of Mollington after a number of burglaries in the village and the surrounding area。

The villagers came up with the idea that they themselves could keep an eye on their neighbors’ possessions while they were away on holiday。

Since then, and with the support of the government and police, more than 50,000 “Neighborhood Watch” schemes have been set up all over the country. The object of each “Watch” group is to reduce the opportunities that criminals have in any particular street or area. Each villager who is a member of the scheme will call the police whenever they see something suspicious. It is the police who actually check out each report and look into what is happening。

Villagers who are part of the “Watch” are not supposed to act as police or put themselves in danger. When a new “Neighborhood Watch” scheme is set up in an area, one benefit is that most burglars dare not take a chance on breaking into someone’s house because they know that there is a high risk of being seen by neighbors keeping a lookout. Burglars also know that people aremore likely to have fitted good locks to their doors and windows.Another benefit is that, si nce the “Neighborhood Watch" schemes came into existence, there is growing evidence of a new community spirit. It is bringing people together as never before, and encouraging people to care for each other。

马鞍山市2014高考英语阅读理解、动词短语精讲讲练〔11〕与答案On August 26, 1999, New York City experienced a torrential downpour. The merciless rain caused the streets to flood. New York City’s subway system came to a screeching stop as the subway stations were drowned in water. Unfortunately, this happened during the morning rush hour. Many people who were going to work were trapped and forced to go home. Some battled with fellow New Yorkers to hail a cab or to get on a bus. Still others braved the storm, walking miles to get to work.I happened to be one of the people on their way to work that morning. I went from subway line to subway line only to find that most service had stopped. After running around like crazy and making my way through crowds of people, I finally found a subway line that was operating. Unfortunately, there were so many people waiting to board the subway that I could not even get down the stairs to the platform. Determined to get to work, I decided to take the train uptown several stops and then switch back to the downtown train. It was annoyance, but it paid off. However, the train got more packed at each stop. People pushed and shoved. I was constantly hit with elbows and bags. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity (no end), the train reached my stop. But the journey was not over yet. I would still have to walk several blocks to get to my office. When I finally got to work, I was completely soaked and left a puddle of water everywhere I sat. I was also exhausted (tired out) and discouraged from my commute. My co-workers and I spent most of the day drying off. When 5:00 rolled around, I was ready to go home. I was about to log off my computer when I received an e -mail from Garth, my Deputy Director:Iwouldliketothankallthosewhomadetheeffortandeventuallyreportedtowork. Itisalwaysreassuring, attimeslikethese, whenemployeessoclearlyshowtheirdevotiontotheirjobs. Thankyou. His e-mail was short, but I learned more from that brief message than I ever did from a textbook. The e-mail taught me that a few words of appreciation can make a big difference. The rainstorm and the transit troubles had made me miserable. But Garth’s words immediately invigorated me and put a smile back on my face. As a matterof fact, his e-mail made the whole subway painful experience all worthwhile.August 26, 1999 may have been one of the darkest days in New York City history, but it was one of the brightest days in my life thanks to Garth.5.The subway system in NY came to a sudden stop because ______.A. most of its service had stoppedB. it was flooded by busy travelersC. it was during a morning rush hourD. its stations were covered with water6.How did the writer get to her office?A. Try one from these great places.⒈Mackinac Island, MichiganThe only way to reach this famed car-free island is by boat and ferry, and once visitors arrive, they are attracted by the history, scenery and fall colors. "It's a throwback to years past, a little town, and there's a big state park as well," Blackwell says. "You're allowed to have boats all around the island."⒉Tellico Lake, TennesseeWith nearly 400 miles of shoreline, this waterway flowing out of the Great Smoky Mountains is largely unexploited, well-protected in its natural state. "People are surprised that there's boating in Colorado, and you can see the mountains just before the snowball," Blackwell says.⒋Lake Monroe, IndianaThe state's largest lake is surrounded by more than 13,000 acres of protected forest and three recreation areas, making it an ideal place to see fall colors, particularly from oaks and the tulip poplar, the state tree. 马鞍山市2014高考英语阅读理解、动词短语精讲讲练(10)及答案AThe first harvest means the death of the cr ops as grain is gathered, and the thanksgiving of the people to the goddesses who provided them with life sustaining grains.Late July and early August mark the middle of summer and the beginning of the harvest season. Famine (饥荒) was common during July as the previous year’s harvest supplies were almost totally used up. Harvesting grains in August ensured the continuance of life and was recognized by many cultures as a time of thanksgiving. In ancient Rome the grain goddess Ceres was honored on the first harvest called Ceresalia in her honor. Our modern word cereal comes from her name. Other goddesses celebrated at the first harvest were Demeter, Persephone, Venus and the Corn Mother. Many native American tribes honor the Corn Grandmother during the Festival of Green Corn. It was held during the full moon when the corn was ready to be harvested. The celebration lasted for several days and was a time to be thankful and a time of forgiveness.Lughnasadh was a happy time regarded as the first of three harvest festivals. Lughnasadh honors the god Lugh, and his foster-mother Taillte who died while clearing the fields of Ireland for agriculture. In Old Irish Lunasa means “August”. The Celts celebrate this day from sunset of August 1 to sunset on August 2 as the wake of Lugh, the Sun-King whose light began to decline after the summer solstice(夏至). At_this_time_oaths(誓言)_were_taken_and_contracts_were_signed.This day was known to the Saxons as Lammas, or loaf-mass, a time when grains were harvested and baked into bread. Christians later adopted this holiday as a day when bread, made from the first fruits of the harvest, was brought to the church to be blessed.August is a time to reflect on the past year, on things that have come to fruition and things that failed. A time to let go of regrets and say farewell to things that have passed and preserve all the fruits that have been gathered to hold onto for future memories.5.The passage should be entitled ______.A. 马鞍山市2014高考英语阅读理解、动词短语精讲讲练(27)及答案I believe influence is the union of power and purpose. As a TV star, magazine founder, businesswoman and celebrity, Oprah Winfrey certainly has power. But most important, she has purpose-a lasting commitment to the principles of goodness and generosity that goes beyond any one individual. ①I have sat with Oprah in interviews and in my home. I have felt her warmth, and I am always moved by her deep love for others. She makes you want to invite her into your life-and she invites you into hers.Oprah’s story is America’s story: a young girl from Mississippi, who grew up without electricity or running water but realized her promise through education and achieved her dreams in liberty. Oprah, 52, reminds us that we who prosper in freedom have a moral responsibility to help others who have the desire to succeed but just need an opportunity. ②Oprah is helping create those opportunities. Out of her own pocket, she built new homes-and gave new hope-to 65 families who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina. ③And just last year, Oprah launched a successful campaign to help victims of abuse find the justice they deserve, so they can move on with confidence. For most people, Oprah’s influence is less direct but no less meaningful. Those are the millions of ordinary men a nd women who wish to improve themselves-to become better parents, kinder friends and stronger individuals. For those people, Oprah is an inspiration. She has struggled with many of the challenges that we all face, and she has transformed her life. ④Her message is powerful: I_did_it,_and so can you. So who, then, is Oprah Winfrey? She is a woman of moral character and a source of strength for millions of her admirers. Her life and her work are evidences to the greatness of her generous heart. She is influential, to be sure. 马鞍山市2014高考英语阅读理解、动词短语精讲讲练(21)及答案“Tear them apart!” “kill the fool!” “Murder the referee (裁判)!”These are common remarks one may hear at various sporting events. At the time they are made, they may seem innocent enough. But let’s not kid ourselves. They have been known to influence behavior in such a way as to lead to real violence. Books have been written about the way words affect us. It has been shown that words having certain meanings may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to what we consider to be our usual behavior. I see the term “opponent” as one of those words. Perhaps the time has come to delete it from sports term. The dictionary meaning of the term “opponent” is “enemy”,or “one who opposes your interests.” Thus, when a player meets an opponent, he or she may tend to treat that opponent as an enemy. I remember an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a player’s request for a time out for a glove change becau se he did not consider them wet enough. The player went away to rub(磨擦) his gloves across his wet T-shirt and then screamed, “Are they wet enough now?”In the heat of battle, players have been observed to throw themselves across the court without considering the effect that such a move might have on anyone in their way. I have also witnessed a player reacting to his opponent’s intentional and illegal blocking by hitting him with the ball as hard as he could during the course of play. Off the court, they are good friends. Does that make any sense? It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which differs from normal behavior. Therefore, I believe it is time we elevated(提升) the game to the level where it belongs, setting an example to the rest of the sporting world. Replacing the term “opponent” with “associate” could be a good way to start. The dictionary meaning of the term “associate” is “friend” or “companion”. You may soon see and possibly feel the difference in your reaction to term “associate” rather than “opponent”.5.What did the handball player do when he was not allowed to change his gloves?A. He refused to continue the game.B. He angrily hit the referee with a ball.C. He insisted that the referee was unfair.D. He wet his gloves by rubbing them across his T-shirt.6.According to the passage, players, in a game, may ______.A. throw the ball at the opponent illegally blocking their wayB. keep on screaming and shouting throughout the gameC. lie down on the ground as an act of protectionD. kick the ball across the court with force7.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?A. The player’s eagerness to win.B. The p layer’s bad behaviour.C. The player’s attitudes towards the game.D. The player’s totally different behaviour on and off the court.8.What can be concluded from the passage?A. Players should be educated to respect referees on the court.B. Replacing the present terms on the court can help reduce violence.C. Raising the referee’s sense of responsibility can help reduce violence.D. Changing the attitude of players on the sports field can help reduce violence.[答案]5.D。

马鞍山市2014高考英语阅读理解、动词短语精讲讲练(31)及答案

We experience different forms of the Sun’s energy every day. We can see its light and feel its warmth. The Sun is the major source of energy for our planet. It causes the evaporation (蒸发) of water from the oceans and lakes. Sunlight also provides the energy used by green plants to make their own food. These green plants then provide food for all organisms (生物) on the Earth. Much of the energy that comes from the Sun never reaches the Earth’s surface. It is either reflected or absorbed by the gases in the upper atmosphere. Of the energy that reaches the lower atmosphere, 30% is reflected by clouds or the Earth’s surface. The remaining 70% warms the surface of the planet, causes water to evaporate, and provides energy for the water cycle and weather. Only a tiny part, approximately 0.023%, is actually used by green plants to produce food. Many gases found in the atmosphere actually reflect heat energy escaping from the Earth’s surface back to the Earth. These gases act like the glass of a greenhouse in that they allow energy from the Sun to enter but prevent energy from leaving. They are therefore called greenhouse gases. When sunlight strikes an object, some of the energy is absorbed and some is reflected. The amount reflected depends on the surface. For example, you’ve probably noticed how bright snow is when sunlight falls on it. Snow reflects most of the energy from the Sun, so it contributes to the low temperatures of winter. Dark-coloured surfaces, such as dark soil or forest, absorb more energy and help warm the surrounding air. 64. According to the passage, the root cause for weather changes on the Earth is ______. A. the atmosphere surrounding the Earth B. water from oceans and lakes C. energy from the Sun D. greenhouse gases in the sky 65. Only a small part of the Sun’s energy reaches the Earth’s surface because most of it is________. A. absorbed by the clouds in the lower atmosphere B. reflected by the gases in the upper atmosphere C. lost in the upper and lower atmosphere D. used to evaporate water from the oceans and lakes 66. We learn from the passage that __________. A. all living things on the Earth depend on the Sun for their food B. a forest looks dark in winter because it absorbs solar energy C. only 0.023% of the energy from the Sun is made use of on the Earth D. greenhouse gases allow heat energy to escape from the Earth’s surface

When I was small and my grandmother died, I couldn't understand why I had no tears. But that night when my dad tried to cheer me up, my laugh turned into crying. So it came as no surprise to learn that researchers believe crying and laughing come from the same part of the brain. Just as laughing has many health advantages, scientists are discovering that so, too, does crying. Whatever it takes for us to reduce pressure is important to our emotional (情感的) health, and crying seems to work well. One study found that 85 percent of women and 73 percent of men report feeling better after crying. Besides, tears attract help from other people. Researchers agree that when we cry, people around us become kinder and friendly and they are more ready to provide support and comfort. Tears also enable us to understand our emotions better; sometimes we don't even know we're very sad until we cry. We learn about our emotions through crying, and then we can deal with them. Just as crying can be healthy, not crying—holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering—can be bad for physical (身体的) health. Studies have shown that too much control of emotions can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems and some other illnesses. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry. But when you feel like crying, don't fight it. It's a natural and healthy emotional response. 67. Why didn't the author cry when her grandmother died? A. Because her father did not want her to feel too sad. B. Because she did not love her grandmother. C. Because she was too shy to cry at that time. D. The author doesn't give the explanation. 68. It can be inferred from the text that_________. A. there are two ways to keep healthy B. crying does more good to health than laughing C. crying and laughing play the same roles D. emotional health has a close relationship to physical health 69. According to the author, which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Crying is the best way to get help from others. B. Fighting back tears may cause some health problems. C. We will never know our deep feelings unless we cry. D. We must cry if we want to reduce pressure. 70. What might be the most suitable title for the text? A. Power of Tears B. How to Keep Healthy C. Why We Cry D. A New Scientific Discovery
