Women of achievement***阅读理解。
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away" is a popular saying in the United States. It may be a common saying, but it is not scientifically confirmed. However, a new study adds to evidence that suggests taking a small amount of aspirin can help keep the doctor away.Peter Elwood is with Cardiff University’s School of Medicine in Britain. Forty years ago, he was involved in the first study to explore the effects of aspirin on the prevention of heart disease. Elwood’s team examined 47 studies for evidence that aspirin helped cancer patients. They found there’s fairly consistent evidence of a 15 to 20 percent reduction in death and a reduction in cancer’s spread, by low dose(剂量) aspirin. By low dose, he means 81 milligrams. The study followed cancer patients for five years. Elwood says the evidence is strong that aspirin delays death among cancer patients.Elwood’s team are excited to have this evidence from the study. Elwood adds that it is not a cure but a small sign of better things to come, what he calls a little hope and encouragement. "If you asked me personally what I would do if doctors told me I had cancer, I would say I would have no hesitation in taking it. But I do not recommend it to people. I want them to have the evidence and make their own decisions."The only major risk is that aspirin can cause stomach bleeding. But Elwood says it usually does not cause death. He adds that the evidence points to big health benefits of taking a daily aspirin. So, for some people, the pros might overweigh the cons.1. What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 1?A. Patients should eat apples.B. Apples are popular with Americans.C. Aspirin can be good for health.D. Doctors should use aspirin instead of apples.2. What does Elwood suggest people do?A. The less aspirin, the better.B. Don’t delay in taking aspirin.C. Taking aspirin is a better way to cure cancer.D. Make decisions in the best interest of their own.3.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?A. Aspirin is the best cure for cancer.B. Taking aspirin won’t kill in the long run.C. Taking aspirin does more good than harm.D. The side effect of taking aspirin is strong.【语篇解读】文章介绍每天服用少量的阿司匹林对健康有好处,可以延缓癌症病人的死亡。

Women of achievement李仕才一、阅读理解Many years ago, when we were a young couple with two small children, aged 2 and 4,we were practically impecunious. My inlaws lived from hand to mouth,so we didn't expect any help from them.My parents lived a great distance away, and I was too ashamed to let them know about our situation. My husband was trying to earn a living with an old pickup truck, carrying groceries for local shopkeepers, but it was constantly breaking down.It took almost all the money we had to have it fixed. The truck was also the only means of transportation for us.We lived in the countryside, and we always used the back door because the driveway led to it.One winter evening,I stepped outside to take a bag of trash to the barrel and almost tripped over something. It was nearly dark, and I had to bend down to see what it was.I could hardly believe my eyes. There sat a large basket loaded with food.It was heavy,so I called my husband to carry it into the house.Once inside,we discovered two loaves of bread, some butter, several cans of vegetables,a can of orange sauce, and a large turkey. There was so much that I couldn't remember it all,but it was everything we needed to fix a wonderful dinner—everything except potatoes.A little while later I remembered that I hadn't taken the trash to the barrel.By now it was dark,so I had to turn on the yard light—and that's when I spotted a small bag of potatoes sitting on the porch. That dinner was the best I could remember. We weren't able to thank our donators, though, because we never found out who had been so generous in helping a struggling young family.Whoever it was,we are forever grateful.1.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “impecunious”in Paragraph 1?A.Generous. B.Harmonious.C.Penniless. D.Stubborn.2.How did the author's husband support the family?A.By starting a garage.B.By selling food door to door.C.By delivering goods.D.By working as a shop assistant.3.How did the author feel when she saw the basket?A.She was annoyed.B.She was astonished.C.She was terrified.D.She felt a sense of relief.4.What may be the best title for the text?A.A helping hand in timeB.A struggling young coupleC.A tale of potatoesD.A reward from a stranger【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。

When I was watching the movie Roman Holiday, a beautiful girl caught my eye. I observed her carefully and fell in love with her. So I referred to the books about her and found that her story was inspiring. When she was young, she led a poor life. Though she married three times, no body looked down upon her. She was delivered to two sons. She was extremely sad when she got divorced(离 婚). However, she carried on with her career. She devoted all her life to acting. It was her determination that made her successful. In support of Audrey Hepburn , I argued my friends into becoming her fans .

Unit 1 Women of achievementⅠ.阅读理解A[2020·惠州市高三调研]Life on the street is a constant struggle for homeless people. In times of extreme weather conditions, that struggle becomes even more difficult. Recently, homeless people across Chicago faced freezing to death if they couldn't find shelter for the night.Thankfully, one local woman refused to let that happen. On January 30,2018,34-year-old Candice Payne, a local managing broker, was lucky enough to have shelter from the dangerous conditions.“It was -20 ℃ , and I knew they were going to be sleeping on ice and I had to do something,\〞 said Payne. Payne started brainstorming different ways she could possibly help. Finally, she decided to see if there were any rooms available at local inns and hotels that she could get to help those stuck on the street. For Payne, her mission was personal. According to Payne, her husband, Carlos Callahan, had lived on the streets at one point in his life. Based on his experiences, Payne knew that the homeless people still out on the street desperately needed help and that if she didn't step up to help, no one likely would. However, when Payne explained what she was trying to do, many of the local hotels refused to allow her to pay for the rooms as they didn't want homeless people to stay in their rooms. “No one wanted them, but one hotel, the Amber Inn, was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms,\〞 said Payne.Payne's selfless act made news across the country. However, she insisted she had never done it for attention.“I am a regular person,\〞 said Payne, who spent thousands of dollars of her own money to help complete strangers.“It all sounded like a rich person did this, but I'm just a little black girl from the South Side.\〞1.What does the underlined word “that\〞 in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.Locals living on the street.B.The homeless freezing to death.C.The extreme weather.D.The shelter for the homeless.2.How did Candice Payne help the homeless people?A.By drawing public attention.B.By giving them money directly.C.By taking them to her own house.D.By buying hotel rooms for them.3.What may contribute to Payne's nice act?A.Her husband's past experiences.B.The requests from the homeless.C.Her desire to become famous.D.The coldness of local hotels.4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.A Black Fighter Changes the WorldB.A Woman's Curiosity Brings a RewardC.A Regular Woman Makes a DifferenceD.A Couple's Brave Act Moves the CountryB[2020·昆明市高三复习诊断]Who're happier, men or women? Research shows it's a complex question and that asking whether males or females are happier isn't really that helpful, because basically, happiness is different for women and men.Women's happiness has been declining for the past 30 years, according to recent statistics. And research shows that women are twice as likely to experience depression compared with men. Gender(性别) differences in depression are well confirmed and studies have found that biological, psychological and social factors contribute to the difference.Early studies on gender and happiness found men and women were socialized to express different feelings. Women are more likely to express happiness, warmth and fear, which help with social bonding and appear more consistent with the traditional role as a primary caregiver, while men display more anger, pride and disrespect, which are more consistent with a protector and provider role.Recent research suggests that these differences are not just socially, but also genetically related. Studies have looked into these findings further and discovered that females use more areas of the brain containing mirror neurons (镜像神经元) than males when they process feelings. Mirror neurons allow us to experience the world from other people's view, to understand their actions and intentions. This may explain why women can experience deeper sadness. Women tend to experience more negative feelings, such as more guilt, shame and to a lesser degree, embarrassment.Psychologically it seems men and women differ in the way they process and express feelings. With the exception of anger, women experience feelings more strongly and share their feelings more openly with others. Studies have found in particular that women express more appreciation — which has been linked to greater happiness. This supports the theory that women's happiness is more dependent on relationships than men's.5.Which feeling are men more likely to show compared with women?A.Warmth. B.Depression.C.Happiness. D.Disrespect.6.What factors cause women to share feelings more openly?A.Psychological factors. B.Biological factors.C.Educational factors. D.Social factors.7.One can probably read the text from ________.A.a science fiction B.a culture brochureC.a nursery guide D.a health magazine8.What is the text mainly about?A.Men and women differ in biology and psychology.B.Men and women experience happiness differently.C.Social roles have a great effect on men and women.D.Women's happiness has declined in the past years.Ⅱ.完形填空[2020·河北九校第一次联考]As a young girl I dreamed of being a dancer, so my parents let me attend dance classes when I was in first grade.
