祖逖有个好朋友叫刘琨，他和祖逖一样，都希望早日平定战乱，让国家强大，让百姓过上好日子。两个人每次在一起谈论国家大事，都会不知不觉谈到很晚，就在一张床上休息。

第二天早上，他们又会一起练剑习武，为将来报效祖国做好准备。

一天半夜，祖逖在睡梦中听到鸡叫声，便爬起来对刘琨说：“公鸡在叫我们起床，现在就去练剑怎么样？”刘琨欣然同意了。

从此以后，祖逖和刘琨约定，每天听到鸡叫声就起床练剑。不管刮风下雨，不管酷暑严冬，从来没有间断过。

功夫不负有心人，经过长期的刻苦练习，祖逖与刘琨都成为既能写得一手好文章，又能带兵打胜仗的文武全才。
