课时作业(十七) Unit 5 Canada—“The True North”Section ⅠWarming Up & Reading-PrereadingⅠ.阅读理解AAll writers have their own special ways of getting words down-a favourite pen, a special place, even a certain time of day. Five famous writers tell you their secrets.Fay WeldonBritish novelistI get up at seven or eight and then I write until lunchtime. I don't write after lunch. I wrote by pen until about four years ago when I realised that the rest of the world used computers. Although I have a new laptop, I still prefer to use my old computer.Michael MorpurgoBritish children's book writerI had problems some years ago sitting at a desk, because I got pains in my shoulder, so I decided to write in bed. Now, when I have a story in my head I go to bed with a small notebook and fill it up. I keep my manuscripts (原稿) in the fridge just in case the house burns down.John MortimerBritish novelistI write in a room that used to be the garage (车库). Now it's full of books and photographs, I write with a soft red pen on a notebook. Each page is almost exactly 300 words long.Simon ArmitageBritish poet and novelistI used to be more nocturnal (夜间活动的), but since my daughter was born I try to keep more traditional hours. I have an office just outside the house above the garage where I keep my books and my treasures. I listen to music when I'm writing.I have no love for my computer, although when it's working we are great friends.Marina LewyckaUkrainian novelistI write in bed, partly because it's the most comfortable and private place and partly because I like to write either at the beginning or the end of the day. I drink an amount of tea and I work on a laptop.【文章大意】本文是记叙文。

On rural highways, the posted speed limitmay be 100km/hr. It is illegal to take automobile radar detectors (汽车雷达检测器) into Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and the Yukon. Someroads and bridges are often closed in winter. Snow tires are required in some provinces. Travelers should also be careful about animals while driving at night in rural areas.Highway 401, from Detroit to Montreal, is one of the busiest highways in North America. It has been the scene of many deadly traffic accidents due to sudden and severe weather changes, high rates of speed, and heavy truck traffic. Traffic safety and road conditions in CanadaB“How far is the next village?” the American asks a man standing by the edge ofthe road. In some countries, because the man realizes that the traveler is tired and eagerto reach his destination (目的地), he will politely say “Just down the road.” He thinks this is more encouraging, gentler, and therefore the wanted answer. So the Americandrives through the night, getting more and more angry, feeling “being tricked”.Hethinks the man on purpose lied to him, for obviously he must have known the distancequite well.Had conditions been reversed (颠倒过来), the American would have felt he was“cheating” the driver if he had said the next town was not too far, and if he would besorry to the weary driver, he would say, “You have a good way to go yet, it is at leastfifteen miles.” The driver might be disappointed, but he would know what to expect.Whether to be accurate or polite leads to many misunderstandings between peopleof different cultures. If you know the situation in advance, it is sometimes easier torecognize the problem.24. But it has been proven that the bigger a bird flock becomes, the faster the birds will fly. The discovery was made by scientists from Sweden's Lund University. They took a look at the flying speed of birds in an effort to find what influenced how fast they would fly. Most of the findings didn't surprise the researchers. A bird's weight and its wing shape, wind speed and direction, and the purpose of the flight all indeed influenced its flying speed. But the scientists found that the size of the flock had a strong effect on the flying speed, which had not been expected. The scientist Anders Hedenström expressed surprise at the discovery as it has usually been ignored in studies on birds.Anders Hedenström and his partner Susanne Akesson collected their data on Sweden's Öland Island. There they studied birds' physical characteristics (特征), counted flock populations, and recorded their speeds during flying. To know the birds' speed while flying, they used a tool that can also gauge important characteristics of wind, including speed and direction. They were able to measure the speed of different kinds of large flocks. The researchers' results showed that bigger flocks fly faster no matter what kind of bird species they belong to. Why that's the case is the nextquestion they hope to answer. The researchers also said that large flocks are made up of largersized birds, which move at faster speeds than smaller birds. In a large flock, it is easier to take advantage of the turbulence (湍流) that occurs behind other birds, especially when flying in formation (队形), like geese and other birds do. Using the turbulence makes it easier to maintain higher speed.【文章大意】原本人们认为鸟群的数目越大,就会飞的越慢,而最新的研究却得出了完全相反的结果。

You may think people in such an attractive,fun-filled place are happier than others. If so,you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness. Many intelligent people still think fun equals happiness. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper,longer-lasting feeling and mood. Going to an amusement park or a ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, forget our problems for a moment and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their effects end when the fun ends. I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play,it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful people have been attending one party after another, driving fancy cars, living expensive homes, everything that spells “happiness”. But in person's written account of their lives and experiences, they never stop showing the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun:depression(抑郁),alcoholism(酗酒),drug addiction(瘾),broken marriages, troubled children and deep loneliness. Ask a bachelor(单身汉) why he refuses marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he's honest,he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment(保证,责任). For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most important features(特征). Similarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun over painful happiness. They can dine out whenever they want and sleep as late as they want. Couples with little babies are lucky to get a whole night's sleep or a three-day vacation. I don't know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most free-setting realizations we can ever come to. It sets free time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It sets free money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it frees us from envy(嫉妒): we now understand that all those rich and attractive people we were so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.
