When o ur daughter, Sandy, belonged to the St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Girl Pioneers in sixth grade, the leaders thought it would be nice if the girls made p ine cone wreaths(花环)for their families as Christmas gifts. So the group gathered pine cones, put them

in water and bought wire wreath frames and adhesive(黏合剂) to hold everything in place.

A few days before Christmas, they and their leaders delivered the finished handiwork.

Through the years, we proudly hung up her wreath each Christmas. In 1986, the wreath was hanging on our door as usual when the temperature on Christmas Day reached 80 degrees. The adhesive began to break down and the pine cones started falling all over our front

porch. We took the wreath down, planning to repair it, and gathered up the pine cones.

That spring, as my husband, Don, was weeding the flower bed in front of our house, he

was surprised to discover a small evergreen plant.

We decided to leave it alone. The determined tree kept growing, making it right

through the long winter. When it got too big for the flower bed we moved it to the back

of our lot. As the tree grew, so did our family, including four grandchildren. One day

the men from the electric company came to trim(修剪) our trees. One of them said it was

a shame that someday our nice evergreen would have to be cut down. We just couldn’t

let that happen to our faithful — if accidental — Christmas tree.

We decided to move it again, this time to Sandy and her husband Joel’s new house in the country. My husband helped Joel dig the evergreen out. It wasn’t ready to let

go without a fight. Finally, five hours later, the tree came loose. They wrapped the

roots as best as they could and put the whole thing in Joel’s truck.

Afte r an hour’s drive they planted the tree. I’m happy to report that our brave evergreen is still growing, now producing pine cones of its own.

C

With their large glass windows and clear views of the hospital’s newest arrivals,

it’s hard to imagine ho spitals without newborn nurseries. But how did this slightly

unusual, if precious, concept of putting babies on show come into being?

Well, they’re not really for putting babies on show. Firstly, they were created

as an area for nurses to take care of all of the new babies, separate from their mothers. Newborn nurseries have been around pretty much since moms started having babies in

hospitals. In the early 1900s, hospitals replaced homes as the primary place to give

birth. Hospitals built maternity wards(产科病房), and those wards had nurseries with windows.

According to https://www.360docs.net/doc/0414604854.html,, a 1943 publication gave two main purposes for the nurseries. The first purpose was to allow the relatives to see the new b abies. The windows, however, were to keep the babies safe and clean while they were being admired by relatives. And that sanitary concern is right and reasonable. Babies’ immune systems(免疫系统) are not yet developed, which has to do with the frightening reason you should be careful about letting people kiss your new baby. However, the https://www.360docs.net/doc/0414604854.html, article does admit that solid walls would be even more effective at keeping bacteria and viruses out than windows. Not to mention they would be more cost-effective. So, yeah the primary

purpose is still to look at the cute babies. Some hospitals would offer individual

viewings so that relatives could have some quality time with their new member. In the

mid- to late twentieth century, these nursery viewings were often the first time fathers got to see their new babies.

Today, though, the nurseries mean a lot to many hospital visitors and family members. Dotti James claims that "the nursery window has become a destination for patients and

families from other parts of the hospital experiencing a health crisisStanding outside

the nursery, seeing the babiescan give hope to families trying to deal successfully with something difficult." It’s pretty much a universal truth that healthy babies are an

immediate mood booster(令人鼓舞的事情).

28.What’s the function of Paragraph 1?

A. To attract readers’ interest.

B. To summarize the whole passage.

C. To provide background information.

D. To introduce the theme of the passage.

29.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?

A. Kissing new babies may cause them harm.

B. Safety is the main focus of newborn nurseries.

C. Nurseries with windows are more cost-effective.

D. Fathers were the last to see new babies decades ago.

30.What’s Dotti James’s attitude towards newborn nurseries?

A. Positive.

B. Doubtful.

C. Concerned.

D. Disapproving.

31.What’s the purpose of the passage?

A. To show the benefits of newborn nurseries.

B. To stress the importance of newborn nurseries.

C. To explain why hospitals set up newborn nurseries.

D. To state some misunderstandings of newborn nurseries.

The competition began there in the 1990s and was inspired loosely by the legend of a 19th-century outlaw who tested the mettle (毅力) of his gang of robbers by having them run an obstacle course with a woman on their backs. The sport has since gained enthusiasts around the world. The event on Saturday in Maine was one of several officially qualifying competitions for international championships in Finland, with the others held in Australia, Sweden and Estonia. Nearly every team employed the “Estonian carry”, in which the woman hangs the head down with her legs hooked around the man’s neck and her arms around his waist, which frees his hands. Despite the competition’s name, the couple does not need to be married. The winners on Saturday were Jesse Wall, a gym owner, and his friend Christina Arsenault. But in one small American city, children can’t play with snow to the fullest. The town of Severance, north of Denver, gets about 100 centimeters of snowfall a year. For almost 100 years, city rules have said it is forbidden to throw or shoot stones or missiles at people, animals, buildings, trees or vehicles. Snowballs were considered to be part of the town’s definition (定义) of “missiles”.

A If you have to attend a party or other social events where a lot of people will be present, do you feel confident that you will make a good impression on others? Or do you feel shy? In any case, you should increase your confidence at social events. Whenever you are meeting new people at any social event, you should wear proper clothes. Before you attend the event, try to find out how other people will be dressing. If everyone else is wearing business clothes, you should, too. If the event is informal, you should wear informal clothes so that you fit in. If you are going to meet people from a certain business or profession, try looking through a few professional magazines or checking on the Internet ahead of time to get some conversation ideas which are related to their fields of interest. This can prevent you getting tongue-tied at the event. When you are at the event, don’t worry about whether or not other p eople you are talking with like you. Instead, try your best to find reasons to like them. When you are making conversation with people, be sure to keep good eye contact, and make your facial expression soft. Nod to show you’re listening. Let your face and body relax so that you can make natural gestures. After the event is over, take a bit of time to think of your social performance and the conversation you had with people. Tell yourself exactly what you did very well at the event. For example, perhaps you made a big effort to really listen to the people you were talking with, or you may have asked several people some good questions that really got them talking. By doing so, your conversation confidence will gradually improve. 1. What should you find out before attending a social event? A. how other people will be dressing. B. a few professional magazines C. some conversation ideas D. reasons to like other people 2. What should you avoid in a social event according to the 4th paragraph? A. Attending a party with your good friends B. Ignoring eye contact with others C. Wearing informal clothes and shoes D. Caring much about what others think of you

A. Kids' imaginations are in overdrive when it comes to composing Christmas lists - as they ask for a live walrus(海象), the power of invisibility(隐身) and Taylor Swift. Christmas is less than two months away, and little ones are already planning their letters to Santa. But one survey has revealed the weirdest items to turn up on Christmas lists, and they include mythical monsters and mega-selling pop stars. Conducted by GAME, the study also reveals a significant break from festive tradition when it comes to writing wish lists. One in three, 29%, children now use technology such as iPads or mobile phones instead of the traditional pen and paper, while a further one in five (19%) will rely on parents to take note of all the things they point at during TV adverts and during trips to the shops. With more than three million lists likely to be drafted, parents are prepared for a flurry of requests including many that even Santa would struggle to achieve. As part of the study, parents were asked to reveal some of the weird and wonderful items that made it onto their child's Christmas lists. Fred Prego, marketing director at GAME, says: "Choosing what to get your kids at Christmas can be a bit of a minefield(雷区).” As the research shows, most kids will be making note of the things that they want this half term and a lot of lists are going to be written." 21. The underlined word “overdrive” in paragraph one means _______. A. running with a high speed B. slowing down sometimes C. driving forth and backwards D. getting stuck somewhere 【答案】:A 【解析】:根据背景可知,孩子们在选择圣诞礼物时,要求颇多,在脑风暴什么礼物时,想象力也十分充沛。overdrive v.& n.大脑“高速运转”。
