新概念之所以能够成为一部经典的传世之作,一方面是因为本身使用的语言优美地道,另一方面是有着很强的体系性:一册解决基本语法和基本句型;二册扩充词汇和表达方法,并解决大部分的中高级语法;三册则进入了美文欣赏和模仿的境界;四册是从多角度领略文化的魅力。一言以蔽之,三四册的任务是“审美”,是比较高级的阶段,而一二册则是为审美打基础。

在该教材的使用过程中,应该着重在以下几个地方下功夫:

一、在基础阶段多读课文

基础阶段的课文虽然比较简单,然后如果不靠多读来培养语感的话,那么你将发现即使到了你能够看懂很复杂的英语的时候,十分简单的句子仍然不能脱口而出,当然我们不一定要能做到背诵,语感到了一定程度可以自己尝试替换练习。

二、运用磁带练习听力

大家完全可以把《新概念英语》当成是一套很好的听力教材。《新概念英语》的配套磁带有英音的和美音的两种。大家可以根据自己的实际需要去选择购买。通过《新概念英语》练习英语听力的方法可以参考下列步骤:

第一步:不要看书,将整篇课文听写下来。如果有的词听不出来,猜测该词应该是什么,实在听不出来就不勉强。随着听写的增多,听力会逐渐增强。在听的过程中,也可加深对英语发音的认识。而且实践证明,如果能达到一听就懂的程度,你的脑子里英语翻译成汉语的现象就会消失,阅读理解的能力一定会大大提高。

第二步:把听写下来的文章与原文比对,查找错误,知道自己错在哪,以后今后如何避免。

第三步:跟着磁带反复跟读课文。注意各单词的读音以及语调等问题,语音语调尽量模仿磁带,力求接近磁带上的。

三、走出背的误区,着眼于结构的模仿

背诵新概念课文向来是一个备受推崇的学习方法,然而,背诵并不是根本目的,能够熟练运用其中的结构才是目的。因此,不如直接着眼于那些实用的表达结构来的更加高效,当然这里的结构并不是单纯指so……that……,too……to……这种词汇积累的范畴,而是更广义地从段落篇章的角度来掌握。如下例:The next car the boy stopped didn’t take him into the center of Paris as he hoped it would, but to Perpignan on the French-Spanish border. 这句话所体现的反差在现实生活中也经常发生,如“笔者当年考进军校时曾对所谓的公寓式宿舍抱有幻想,当队长带领路过校招待所时,笔者误以为这就是宿舍,不想队伍没

有停下,而是穿过另一个漆黑狭长的胡同后来到了一幢古老的房子面前。”套用一下这个结构:The captain didn’t lead us into the bright hotel lobby as we hoped he would, but to an ugly, nasty and ancient house at the end of a dark alley.

电影《the bone collector》中也有这样的场景“一个杀手假扮成出租车司机,把一对无辜的夫妇一声不吭地带到了一个鬼地方进行杀害。”我们也同样可以套用这个结构对电影进行描述:The murderer didn’t take the couple to their destination as they hoped he would, but to a forsaken corner of the city after a long, silent journey. 熟练运用后我们甚至可以跳出地点的限制,描述更广泛的内容,如 He didn’t get a great success as he thought, but a horrible debt after all those struggling.“他并没有像当初所想象的那样取得巨大成功,多年奋斗之后他唯一所有的就是一笔巨额债务。”

必须指明的是,看懂上述句子不难,但是如果诸位没有认真思考并且模仿,那必然难以用didn’t, but, as XXX thought/hoped would外加介词词组这些看似平淡无奇的关键词来表达现实和预想之间的反差。优美的表达不仅需要恰当的词汇,更需要清晰的逻辑,这种中等长度的篇章更注重语言组织的逻辑关系,而不是个别一两个词的用法。这样的例子在三册这样的中高级阶段中十分多见,又如:比方新概念第三册第二单元最重要的文章第23课里出现了这么一句话:No creature has received more praise and abuse than the common garden snails. 看上去是平淡无奇的一句简单句,中间其实蕴涵了丰富的句型可模仿性可操作性。现在大多考试的作文都属于议论文,大家仔细考虑一下就会明白,上面的句子稍微变化一下就可以成为很多议论文的首句,可以用来表达“什么什么是最有争议的问题”,举个例子,比如我们如果要写“关于烟花爆竹的问题一直以来很有争议”,大家就可以自然而然地说出“ Nothing has received more praise and abuse than fireworks”.

上述的模仿无疑可以为优美表达奠定坚实基础

四、词汇的学习

新概念教材课文里所学习的单词都是最基本、最常用的词汇,所以大家一定要掌握。对于意思不太明白的,最好用英英词典或者双解词典查阅并掌握其含义。尤其是新概念三册里面的词汇更是大学英语四六级以及考研,托福等考试的高频词汇。就比方第一课A PUMA AT LARGE 出现的句子 as the evidence began to accumulate(accumulate 由少积多,自然的积累),accumulate这个词汇经常会和下面的一些在一起考察和辩析: 1collect (人为的,有意的收集/收藏);2 gather (把人召集);3 assemble (有目的的集会/装配)。就以某年的四六级真题为例:________ energy under the earth must be released in one form or another, for example, an earthquake.

A)Accumulated B) Gathered

C) Assembled D) Collected

根据上面的分析,我们不难看出A项是正确的选择。所以,我们通过对新概念的词汇学习,使用正确的科学的方法手段,攻克各类考试的高频词汇事轻而易举的。

另外,大家要十分留心小词的用法。英语中有一个现象,越是看似短小的词汇,越是有深刻的内涵。举个简单的例子:杭州有各种各样的餐馆,适合不同的口味和消费水平,这里大家一眼就能发现消费水平是个棘手的东西。如何翻译呢?笔者的版本可以供大家参考:There are many restaurants for different pockets and tastes in Hangzhou. Pocket是指衣服上的口袋,经常是用来放钱包的,因此可以用pocket来表示一个人的经济状况。又如“在激烈的竞争中活下来的大多数是财力雄厚的公司”可这样翻译:the remaining are those with deep pockets。这个其实相当于《岳阳楼记》中的沙鸥翔集,锦鳞游泳中的“锦鳞”一词,巧妙的用了借代的修辞手法。

再来一例,shrink本意是指衣物的缩水,那我们可以看下句中shrink所表达的意思。The princess showed great courage despite the danger, while the concubine shrank at the last minute. 看过《木乃伊归来》的人都知道这句话表达的是电影中的一个场景:公主在危难面前显示出了巨大的勇气,祭司的相好却在最后一刻退却了。人面临危险,挑战或者困难的时候所表现出来的缩手缩脚的样子,就被一个shrink表现的淋漓尽致。例如,“杭州的房价高的离谱”我们也可以说:The buyers generally shrink at the unreasonable house price.

因此,在学习英语的过程中,如果发现自己的表达苍白,那么不能盲目的抱怨自己的词汇量不够,只是很多看似是“旧时友”的单词,其实由于自己没有深刻理解内涵而成了“外来客”。

六、语法和阅读

建议大家进行课后的习题练习和同步测试,巩固学习内容,检验学习效果。尤其是,新概念每课都有一个自己的核心语法内容,这就要求学生要将每课的这一个语法掌握。如果个别同学感觉自己的语法和阅读水平较差的,最好选择一些与自己水平相当的语法教材和英语分级阅读读物来进行课外学习,以提高英语实力。

七、写作

很多人不知道如何借学习新概念来提高自己的写作能力,其实这也是有法可循的。你可以在接触一篇新的课文前,先不要看它的英文,而是根据它的中文翻译自己写再翻译成英语,然后再和原文对照,这样一经对比,就可以找到自己写作的弱点和问题,及时修正,日久积累,从而获得提高。特别是第三册和第四册里面的一些美文,就为大家提供了相当好的写作方法和经典范文。一言以蔽之,写作的关键就是在对比中进步。

八、丰富词汇量,学以致用,口语表达具体化

比如别人问你:what does she look like? 你是否干脆利落的回答:Nice!那么你的回答太糟糕了!仿佛就是在说对方“气质是好的,却暗示长相抱歉因此避而不谈”。beautiful 同样苍白且缺乏画面感,说了等于没说,这样的形容词往往会使一段对话中止在尴尬之中。因此,口语表达切忌使用这些空乏、没有实际信息的形容词。但如果大家尝试着给出一些具体的信息,效果就截然不同了。如:She has rosy cheeks and red lips. Her bright eyes can talk. (她桃面朱唇,明眸善睐)。当被问到:How do you think of the west lake? 你也可以生动地回答:The west lake is like a fair lady, always charming in light or heavy make-up.(欲把西湖比西子,淡妆浓抹总相宜)

上述是笔者几点教学心得,虽着眼细微之处,但也不失为新概念学习中的好方法。在此着以点墨,与之共勉。如果我们能作到这几点,相信能够取得飞跃性的进展。
