第—节(共15小题;每小题2分,共30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

Animal moms are great moms. You might be surprised at some of these moms.

Octopuses (章鱼)

The mother octopus lays about 50,000 eggs. For about 300 days, she stays with the eggs, cleans them and protects them. She does not leave to feed. However, this animal mom dies as soon as the eggs are hatched (孵化).

Crocodiles

A crocodile mother puts a lot of time and effort into raising her babies. She starts by building a nest (巢), which she guards for over two months! When the eggs are ready to hatch, the young crocs call out to their mother, who digs them out and helps them hatch. She then carries them in her mouth down to the water, where she will guard them for several more weeks or months until they learn to hunt on their own.

Bats

Bats become moms by hanging head up in a cave, giving birth. Catching the youngster before it can fall to the ground below, she puts it in a pouch (育儿袋). Bat moms may carry babies with them when feeding for the first few days. As the little bats get bigger and heavier, moms help them hang on the wall of their caves and return often to feed them. It continues for about three weeks, until the babies are grown up and able to fly on their own.

Koalas (考拉)

The animal mom gives birth after a pregnancy (怀孕期) of only 35 days. The hairless baby climbs into its mother’s pouch and lives there for another five months. When the little koala is between five and eight months old, it leaves the pouch for short periods of time but returns for safety. Once it is too big to return to the pouch, it will climb onto its mother’s back and ride there until it is about 12 months old.

The 1904 Olympic Games hosted in St. Louis, caused the first Olympic scandal (丑闻). During the marathon, American Fred Lorz decided he would not run the entire race. Instead, he had a friend pick him up in a car and drop him off just before the finish line.

When the truth was discovered, he was banned (禁止) from the Olympic Games for life. The winning gold medal was instead given to Thomas Hicks, also of the United States. He was one of just 14 marathon runners who crossed the finish line.

From the beginning the 1904 Olympics were faced with many of the same problems of the 1900 Paris Games. Because the events were again held as part of the World’s Fair, the event organizers were unable to develop an identity for the 1904 Games. Add to that the same five-month long competition and the increased cost of traveling to the United States for the competition and the Olympic Games became unimportant.

In fact, with just 12 countries sending athletes, fewer countries took part in the 1904 Olympic Games than the 1896 Olympic Games. In all, 651 athletes competed in 19 sports and 91 events. More than 550 of those athletes were from the United States and Canada.

American Ray Ewry again won all three of the events he entered: standing high jump, standing triple jump (立定三级跳远) and standing long jump. George Eyser, a gymnast (体操运动员) from the United States, won six medals.

Gold, silver and bronze medals were handed out for the first time at the 1904 Olympic Games.

5. What happened at the 1904 Olympic Games for the first time?

A. It was held as part of the World’s Fair.

B. Many athletes cheated in the competition.

C. The marathon was included as an event.

D. Medals were given to the winning athletes.

6. The 1904 Olympic Games became unimportant mainly because _____.

A. only athletes from 12 countries took part

B. it lasted too long and cost too much

C. there were fewer events than before

D. American athletes had control over it

7. What can we learn about George Eyser from the text?

A. He was found cheating in the competition.

B. He won the gold medal in the marathon.

C. He won the first place in standing long jump.

D. He received six medals as a gymnast.

C

Computer technology is still developing rapidly. The computer of the future will continue to increase in value and performance while decreasing in cost. It will become smaller, but faster and more powerful.

It is possible to make some guesses about what the future of the computer will look like, based upon the types of technologies that are being developed now. A lot of progress has already been made in some of these new technologies, but some are still in their earliest stages and may not be ready for use for years. Two of the most interesting areas of computing that are currently being developed are quantum computing (量子计算) and nanotechnology (纳米技术).

Quantum computing is one possibility for the future of the computer that could make computers run far faster than even the quickest computers do today. Quantum computers could be able to do what modern supercomputers are unable to do by using transistors that are able to take on many states at the same time.

Nanotechnology could also change the face of computing, by creating computers that could be very powerful, though they are tiny in size. These computers could be incorporated (并入) into everyday objects, including electrical appliances (电器), clothes and even the human body. We will be able to use computers in new and unimaginable ways. They will become a part of our lives rather than simply being a box that is used only for specific purposes, such as work.

Quantum computing and nanotechnology will be able to play new roles, which will make us live greener lives, as well as enjoy better health and happier lives.

8. Which of the following can NOT describe the computer of the future properly?

A. Much smaller.

B. Much faster.

C. More powerful.

D. Less valuable.

9. According to the text, quantum computing _____.

A. has been put in use so far

B. can make computers run by themselves

C. can reduce the cost of computers

D. will work by using transistors

10. We can learn from the text that nanotechnology will _____.

A. create much smaller computers

B. be used in electrical appliances and clothing

C. change the structure of computers

D. make computers just serve specific purposes

11. The text is mainly about _____.

A. what nanotechnology is

B. what quantum computing is

C. what the future of the computer is

D. what future computers can bring us

D

It was 3:21 a.m. when nine-year-old Glenn Kreamer awoke to the smell of burning. Except for the cracking(爆裂声) of flames somewhere below there was not a sound in the two-storey house at Baldwin, Long Island.

With his father away on night duty at a local factory, Glenn was worried about the safety of his mother, his sister Karen, 14 and his 12-year-old brother Todd. He ran downstairs through the smoke- filled house to push and pull at Karen and Todd until they sat up. Then he helped each one through the house to the safety of the garden. There, his sister and brother, taking short and quick breaths and coughing, collapsed on the lawn.

The nine-year-old boy raced back into the house and upstairs to his mother's room. He found it impossible to wake her up. Mrs Kreamer, a victim of the smoke, was unconscious, and there was nobody to help Glenn carry her to the garden. But the boy remained calm and, as a fireman said later, “acted with all the self-control of a trained adult.”

On the bedroom telephone, luckily still working, Glenn called his father and, leaving Mr Kreamer to telephone the fire brigade and ambulance service, got on with the task of saving his mother.

First he filled a bucket with water from the bathroom and threw water over his mother and her bed. Then, with a wet cloth around his head he went back to the garden.

He could hear the fire engine coming up, but how would the firemen find his mother in the smoke- filled house where flames had almost swallowed up the ground floor?

Grasping firmly a ball of string from the garage, Glenn raced back into the house and dashed upstairs to his mother's room. Tying one end of the string to her hand, he ran back, laying out the string as he went, through the hall and back out into the garden.

Minutes later he was telling fire chief John Coughlan: “The string will lead you to

Mother.”Mrs Kreamer was carried to safety as the flames were breaking through her bedroom floor.

12.Why did Glenn run downstairs first?

A. He wanted to find out what was happening.

B. He was worried about his mother's safety.

C. He wanted to save his sister and his brother.

D. He went to see if his father had come back from work.

13.How did Glenn help the firemen to save his mother?

A. By throwing water all over her and her bed.

B. By carrying her to safety with his brother.

C. By pushing and pulling at her.

D. By tying a string to her hand.

14.Who called the fire brigade and ambulance service?

A. Glenn.

B. Glenn's father.

C. Glenn's sister.

D. Glenn's neighbor.

15.Glenn saved his family because ________ .

A. his father had taught him to do so on the phone

When people have a choice of whom to work with, likability can sometimes matter a little bit more than ability, said Tiziana Casciaro, an associate professor at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management, who researches likability in the workplace.

16 These strategies can help:

17

You can induce a sense of similarity with almost anybody by finding things you have in common. They may not be apparent right away, so be observant. Great salespeople do this all the time by studying potential customers for bits and pieces of their lives they can relate to.

Like someone and they'll like you right back

18 Flattery (奉承) can convey fondness, but she doesn't recommend using the fake kind, even though it may work. Casciaro said, "Flattery that is completely made up is exhausting and morally blameworthy. " Instead, let a praise come from a real place. 19 For instance, "I really appreciate what you did yesterday.

When you give people praises, it goes a very long way towards their liking you back.

Be a familiar presence

Humans like things that are familiar, so just seeing you around in person makes you more likable to others. "This concept gives a whole new meaning to the idea of face time, Casciaro said. 20 If not, just try to talk to people as much as possible in person during work hours, she advised. You want to maximize rich interactions and cut down on the drier ones, like texts and phone calls. Be sure to be seen.

A. Ask a lot of questions.

B. See the positive in a person and express it to him.

C. People like to guess what others think about them.

D. What can you do to increase your chances of being liked?

E. Find the common points that link you with another person.

F. It's almost irresistible that we like people who seem to like us.

G. Go to after-work drinks if you have time and you would find the outing enjoyable.

第二节书面表达(共25分)

One possible version:

Dear Sir,

I’m Li Hua, a student from Guangming middle school. I’m writing to express my opinions about the shared bike.

Being convenient and environmentally friendly, shared bikes have already been popular throughout China. However, with its rapid development, it brings about many problems. In some places shared bikes are left everywhere and sidewalks are occupied. What’s worse, some people even damage them or take them just as their own possessions.

In my opinion, it’s the lack of public awareness and related laws that results in such phenomena. To solve the problems, measures must be taken right away. First, the government should make some strict laws and rules to regulate the operation and management of the shared bikes. Second, the public should raise their awareness of using the bikes correctly and gracefully.

I hope you will take my advice into consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

Our band is made up of four students, one being the singer and the rest three playing guitar, keyboard and drums. As far as I am concerned, I have been practicing drums for almost ten years. Our music is loosely based on Jay Zhou, whose talent we admire most. In addition, what we are also fond of is rock music, some of which I’d like to make on my own. Our band is scheduled to practice our music in my room, which is the first step to success. Then we plan to give some performances in our school. We are wondering how we balance between study and band and what we can do to make it a successful band. We’d appreciate it if you could give us some better suggestions. 第一学期高一级期末 英语试卷 (时间:100分钟;满分:120分) 本试卷分第Ⅰ卷(选择题)和第Ⅱ卷(非选择题)两部分。 第Ⅰ卷 第一部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题, 每小题2分,满分30分) A Two brothers, Herbert and James, lived with their mother and a cat named Edgar. James was particularly devoted to the cat, and when he had to leave town for several days, he left Herbert careful instructions about the pet’s care. At the end of his first da y away, James telephoned his brother, “How is Edgar?” “Edgar is dead.” Herbert answered. There was a pause. Then James said, “Herbert, you’re insensitive (漠然的). You know how close I was to Edgar. You should have broken the news to me slowly. When I asked about Edgar tonight, you should have said, ‘Edgar’s on the roof , but I have called the fire department to get him down.’ And tomorrow when I called, you could have said the firemen were having trouble getting Edgar down, but you were hopeful they would succeed. Then when I called the third time, you could have told me that the firemen have done their best, but unfortunately Edgar had fallen off the roof and was at the veterinarian’s (兽医站). Then when I called the last time, you could have said that although everything possible had been done for Edgar, he had died. That’s the way a sensitive man would have told me about Edgar. And, oh, before I forget,” James added, “how is mother?” “Oh,” Herbert said, pausing for a moment, “She’s on the roof.” 1. James telephoned his brother at the end of his first day away because he wanted to know _____. A. what he was doing B. whether he was good C. whether the cat was good
