How to study English in China

English is obviously not the native language in China. Even if many Chinese want to improve their English level to the amount needed in daily work, it's very hard when only a few people speak English around them. 1 Here are a few tips that might help.

Join a school with native teachers to guide you.

2 The more exposure you can get to these foreign teachers, the faster and better you are going to learn English. If a school doesn't give students maximum exposure to native English speakers' classes, find one that does.

Read English daily.

This means using websites that are permitted in China accessing English texts, newspapers and books. Read short stories in English. When you come across words you don't know, write them down immediately. 3

Memorize vocabulary.

Write new words in a notebook every week, with English definitions and a sample sentence, not a Chinese translation. 4 Carry it with you everywhere you go. Even if you have a question about something that you see and you don't know the English word, set it down in your own language with the plan to look it up later and learn that word

in English.

5

English is not well controlled by grammar rules. For every rule, there is an exception to that rule. Your time will be better spent in writing than studying grammar for long hours. Find

someone to write emails in English to or write a diary every day.

There are many other ways to improve your English. Come on!

A. Learn to write.

B. Watch an English film once a month.

C. What can you do to study more English?

D. You can do this by writing in your notebook.

E. There are many native English speakers in China.

F. Follow a soap opera, comedy or radio program or TV drama.

G. You should be carrying a notebook with you everywhere you go just to write down something important.

Does this situation seem familiar to you? Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, and you are speaking quite frequently. 1 First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of English as a foreign language. The most important thing is to listen as often as possible. 2 The Internet is really a useful tool for English students. You can download The Real Player from Real Media. The Real Player allows you to use the Internet like a radio station.

Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis, you might still be frustrated by limited understanding. 3

Here is some of the advice I give my students:

Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything.

Stay relaxed when you do not understand, and try listening to the material for all times.

Do not translate everything into your native language.

4 Don't concentrate on details before you have understood the main ideas.

Listen to something you enjoy.

I remember the problems I had in understanding spoken German when I first went to Germany. In the beginning when I didn't understand a word, I insisted on translating it in my mind. This method usually resulted

in confusion. 5 Firstly, translating creates a barrier between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves constantly. By remaining calm, I noticed that even if I didn't pay much attention I could usually understand what the speaker had said.

A. What should you do?

B. Listen for the general idea of the conversation.

C. But you can't follow a native English speaker at all!

D. But listening is a problem for most of the beginners!

E. So what you need to do is to find listening resources.

F. However, after several weeks I got used to the new environment in Germany.

G. Then after the first six months, I discovered too extremely important facts.

Several times each year the Queen gives afternoon tea parties at which guests are served tiny cakes filled with cream from her own cows. Cakes and sandwiches are brought in by footmen, yet you never see the Queen touch a thing. She simply sits beside a big silver plate, pouring cups of tea for everyone and carefully avoiding the cakes. At cocktail parties the Queen moves from group to group, chatting informally, and manages to make one glass of diet(节食)drink to last an entire evening. Tours abroad are difficult because hosts(主人)seem to believe the warmth of their welcome must be shown with wonderful state banquets(宴会). But the Queen has perfected the art of appearing to enjoy her meal without actually eating much. During one visit to the Pacific islands of Tonga, a specially-prepared dinner was arranged in a hut made of wood and bamboo leaves. Deep holes were dug in the ground, filled with hot stones and baby pigs, and the pigs were slowly baked over several days. Then she became uneasy when a turkey, some meat, bananas and an apple were also carried in for each guest. So she depended on her old favorite trick of talking with her host. , King Tupou IV, carrying on a warm conversation. At the same time she pushed her food around her plate and only ate a piece of turkey and some fruit. Reporters traveling with her have noted that the Queen will sometimes seem so carried away by a foreign leader’s political chat that she simply never has time to finish a meal before it is time to get up and make her speech. 2021届高考阅读七选五训练 阅读七选五 1 Imagine a child standing on a diving board four feet high and asking himself the question:"Should I jump?" This is what motivation or the lack of it can do. Motivation and goal setting are the two sides of same coin. (1) Like the child on the diving board, you will stay undecided. (2) More than that, how should you stay motivated to achieve the goal? First, you need to evaluate yourself, your values, your strengths, your weaknesses, your achievements, your desires, etc. Only then should you set your goals. You also need to judge the quality and depth of your motivation. This is quite important, because it is directly related to your commitment. There are times when your heart is not in your work. (3) So, slow down and think what you really want to do at that moment. Clarity (清晰)of thoughts can help you move forward. Another way of setting realistic goals is to analyze your short and long term objectives, keeping in mind your beliefs, values and strengths. Remember that goals are flexible. (4) They also need to be measurable. You must keep these points in mind while setting your goals. Your personal circumstances are equally important. For example, you may want to be a pilot but can't become one because your eyesight is not good enough. (5) You should reassess your goals, and motivate yourself to set a fresh goal. You will surely need to overcome some difficulties, some planned, but most unplanned. You cannot overcome them without ample motivation. Make sure that you plan for these difficulties at the time of setting your goals. A.This can affect your work. B.So how should you motivate yourself? C.However, this should not discourage you. D.So why should we try to set specific goals? E.They can change according to circumstances. F.Motivation is what you need most to do a good job. 2023届高考英语二轮复习:七选五 专题训练(含答案)

七选五专题训练 Passage 1 ABCFE Sending handwritten letters may have fallen out of fashion, but I’m a great believer in the power of letters. There’s something unique and special about handwritten things. You write a letter not because there’s something you need to know, but there’s something you want to say.1 The letter is a powerful and memorable way to touch the ones you care about. When my granny died and I cleared her house, I found hundreds of letters she had kept. 2 There were letters from her mother, who died long before I was born, but sitting reading them one rainy afternoon, her words stretched out across time and I felt I knew her. 3 It can enrich a relationship and allow it to grow. When I was 12, I faked a letter from a parent to the pet shop for a pet mouse. My mum punished me and made me write letters to some relatives. One of them was my uncle who I’d only met a few times before.I wrote a long letter detailing my life and listing my interests. My punishment complete,I forgot about this until I suddenly got a reply from him. “How lovely to hear from you,” he said, and went on to tell me all about his life. He’d love to hear about what subjects at school I enjoyed. 4 I have grown close to him since then. I often think about how that one naughty childhood behavior led to such an enriching communication that stretched on for many years. It encouraged me to write to lots of other people in fact. 40 So, I’d encourage you to put pen to paper and see where it leads. What have you got to lose? A. That is the point of the letter. B. They told the story of her relationships. C. Receiving a letter is such a lovely surprise. D.
